    Subject: The gloves are off!

Let me tell you a little story... About 10 years ago back at MIT, I was roommates with a brilliant biotech major, we'll just call him Bhupinder, because that was his name and I can't be bothered to keep track of an alias. Anyways, Bhupinder's research was what the university establishment deemed "immoral" and "an affront to all things good and just". But he was definitely on to something... and I saw a financial opportunity. Laundering some of my identity theft profits, I bankrolled Bhupinder's move to China and the establishment of a research lab buried deep underneath a Chinese suicide net factory. Almost a decade later, my investment has paid off. Bhupinder is successfully growing tiger penis on the backs of lab rabbits... and we are making a KILLING on the Asian aphrodisiac market.

So through a series of shell corporations and offshore bank accounts, the Niagara Rhinos Athletic Department has a powerful new financial booster courtesy of impotent Indian men. With Palinski and Gibbs heading into their final year of eligibility next season, we need to win now... Forget bribing recruits with baby formula, I'll bribe them with actual human babies if that's what they want. The gloves are off, Moonboots is back and we are taking no prisoners... maybe some hostages to leverage a signing here or there... but no prisoners.

All that said, this first recruit will receive no shenanigans... as he is the son of our very own running backs coach...

    Tiki Browning / ATH / 3-star
    6'3" / 216 lbs / Buffalo, NY

We've been following Stevie's son since he was a freshman, but let me bring you up to speed. He started on varsity as a sophomore, primarily playing WR and DB. During the year leading up to his junior year he had a four inch growth spurt and looked to be a solid WR prospect. Then his starting QB got hurt and Tiki took over the offense. Now in his senior year, he is the full time QB and looking pretty darn solid.

He probably doesn't have the raw speed to make it as a Power 5 wideout but that's what most colleges still consider him. I actually like him much more as a quarterback. He has a cannon for an arm and his accuracy appears to be improving every week. Top end speed isn't elite, but he has a quick enough first step to be a legit dual threat. Our biggest competition probably isn't another football program, but basketball. Both Villanova and Syracuse have offered him scholarships as a shooting guard... But Stevie assures me that football is his son's first love. I think we may have found Conrad's replacement.

    The Trench Guys
We need an offensive line upgrade, here are my top guys. Two of them could probably start right now on the interior of our line.

    John Lopez / T / 3-star
    6'4" / 298 lbs / Centerville, OH

    Paul Cleveland/ T / 3-star
    6'6" / 290 lbs / Vancouver, BC

    Freddie Smith / T / 3-star
    6'5" / 276 lbs / Saraland, AL

    John Hodgsen / G / 3-star
    6'4" / 286 lbs / Halifax, NS

I am very confident that we can sign at least two of these guys, potentially three. We are in a battle with Penn State for Hodgsen, but none of the other three have received a ton of attention yet. All of them could potentially start next year depending on how our current roster develops. None of them are slam dunk All-Americans, both Lopez and Smith have conditioning issues, Cleveland is a little slow footed, etc... But the potential is here... and all of them are stud run blockers.

    The Defense

    Bryan Landry / DE / 3-star
    6'4" / 245 lbs / Miamisburg, OH

    Matthew Vogel / DE / 3-star
    6'3" / 258 lbs / San Leandro, CA

There isn't all that much that stands out with these two guys... but they are both solid all-around defensive lineman. They would both deserve rotational snaps if on the roster today.

    David Gaddis / ATH / 5-star
    6'4" / 182 lbs / Toccoa, GA

A legit two-way player. For a tall, lanky beanpole.. David has incredible fluidity in his hips and can change direction on a dime. Between that and his 19 foot wingspan, this guy is an absolute beast in coverage. While we don't necessarily need defensive backs, this is a one-of-a-kind talent... I could see him forcing Demetrius Howze into full time WR work next season. While David's hands and route running aren't as polished as his coverage skills, he is tall and good enough to earn rotational work at wideout.

    The Offense

    Keith Walton / WR / 5-star
    6'1" / 213 lbs / Woodland, CA

I'm spending more and more time on the west coast, as that's the easiest way to meet Bhupinder and get my money... so I'm working on establishing a pipeline in Cali. Keith is a more skilled version of Elton Fante. A speed merchant who runs precise routes but can have suspect hands at times. USC and Ohio State are in the mix, but neither have yet offered a scholarship.

    Alex Wesley / WR / 5-star
    6'5" / 214 lbs / Savannah, TN

I consider him more of a 4-star prospect based on skill set, but you can't teach 6'5". Speed is decent, but certainly not world-class... this is a jump ball guy who can simply out-body smaller DBs. Similar to Walton, Cal and Notre Dame are in the mix but have yet to offer scholarships.

    Chad Bryant / HB / 3-star
    5'11" / 219 lbs / Danbury, CT

I really want to land a speed back as a compliment to Kandakai's more between-the-tackles style. Chad has speed to burn in a straight line... but not much else. He isn't terribly elusive and has cinderblocks for hands in the passing game... But he is fast and could be a nice change of pace. I'm still working my contacts looking for better HB options, but I think he is a guy that we can sign easily.

(Nunyer's Note: For anybody that is curious, Tiki Browning is not a created recruit... All the information in the blurb came from the actual CPU generated player, I just changed the name and hometown to fit the storyline. I created three prospects this year: a 4-star speed HB, a 3-star possession WR and a 3-star offensive lineman. So far only the OL (J.Hodgsen) has any interest in Niagara... but I might be able to land the WR eventually, as so far no other schools have shown interest. )

FYI, the CPU idiot sacks like you mentioned are due to QBs having a low AWR rating. If you want to still keep QBs that aren't too OP (such as for the guys that are lower overall) but want to get rid of those stupid QB sacks that they love to take when they scramble every play, you can bump the QB's AWR rating up to 76 and that will make them stop playing that way. (h/t to SilverBullet19 for explaining that way back in the day)

Thanks! That does ring a bell now that you bring it up... then again with the hundreds and hundreds of "tweak this, change that" setting and slider gumbo I've learned and forgotten over the years with these EA football games... I can't be sure. From now on, I'll be bumping AWR for CPU QBs if warranted.

Speaking of slider gumbo, my next game against USF is my final litmus test to whether or not slider tweaks will be needed. They fall in between Vandy and Memphis in general talent levels and Vandy definitely had the talent to win with maybe some better playcalling. But I still might need a slight defensive nerf due to my higher talent levels. I'll be making adjustments on the fly if I think it's warranted.

Notre Dame Struggles Against Tough Schedule
Defending National Champions Notre Dame has stumbled a bit in their return to independence, going 3-2 out of the gate. Those that questioned the wisdom of scheduling such a challenging slate of games seem to have been validated. The Fighting Irish have scheduled seven teams ranked in the preseason top 25 and two others (Texas and USC) which aren't too far below that level. Their weakest two opponents are no pushovers either, with 3-0 Colorado and 1-2 Syracuse being the only matchups where the Irish would be a clear favorite. So far, they've managed to defeat Texas, the currently 6th ranked Spartans and Boston College while dropping games to #5 Miami and #20 Clemson.

Alabama Can't Beat A Ranked Opponent
After the surprise retirement of Head Coach Nick Saban in 2014 and the hiring of his half-brother Vinnie Saban, Alabama has had very little success against ranked opponents. Since the start of 2015, the Crimson Tide are only 2-6 against Top 25 opponents and 0-2 this season. They were crushed by rival Florida in week 3 by a score of 45-24 and this past week lost 31-21 against Ole Miss. Word in Tuscaloosa is that Vinnie is on the hot seat and all but fired, with university officials regretting hiring a high school coach based on nothing but name recognition.

          Buckeyes Off to Historic Start
Starting out a perfect 5-0, top ranked Ohio State has outscored their opponents 234-78. This is by far the biggest point differential in FBS. They are ranked #1 in passing offense, #3 in rushing offense and #3 in total defense. Of course three of those victories were against soft non-conference opponents such as Bowling Green, Central Michigan and the Tulsa Banditos. Their two quality wins were against #21 Oklahoma and unranked Wisconsin. We'll see if their dominance can continue as they enter the heart of the Big Ten schedule.

Pac-12 looks tough this year. 5 teams in the Top-25. Will be interesting to see if the Ducks can keep winning and make a run at a Natty here too.

Good luck with the Bulls. Looks like they are playing solid football.

Also looking forward to seeing if Tiki follows in the footsteps of his dad, or bolts for for NBA dreams

                  Nunyer's Notes

Tweaked the sliders a bit prior to this game, small boosts to CPU pass accuracy, run block and pass block. Was hard to tell if it made any difference... they had a few big plays, although instead of taking dumb sacks, the CPU QB threw some awful passes into coverage.

But I'm loving the CPU defense in general... as it's doing a good job of exposing my lack of OL strength in the run game. Passing is still open enough, as it's always going to be in this game once your team has decent QB/WR talent... but the American is definitely a bigger challenge as I'm completing under 60% of my passes with a 5 TD to 7 INT ratio so far... I wouldn't have complained had I lost this or the Vandy game, but so far the CPU AI is finding ways to lose more than I am doing anything to win.

Oh just realized that I forgot to mention the injury from this game. TE Latimer Iorg, out for 10 weeks with a torn pectoral. In a weird twist, Iorg was also the offensive player who rolled a pre-determined injury that was supposed to land in week 8 and run for five weeks. My earlier defensive injury to Daniloff was naturally occurring, so my pre-determined one is yet to drop.

Niagara's Christian Ricks Out for Season
Senior Cornerback tore his Achilles tendon during team walk through this afternoon

                    By: Oscar Gamble
                    October 4th, 2016

Senior cornerback Christian Ricks will miss the remainder of the 2016 NCAA season with a torn Achilles tendon. The injury took place towards the end of a short week of practice. The team will fly to Houston tomorrow morning to prepare for their Thursday night game against the Cougars. According to team sources, it was a non-contact injury and happened while Ricks was jogging off the field.

"It was just one of those freak things", said defensive coordinator Jordan Johnson, "He was jogging off the field, then just crumpled to the ground. He's in good spirits and expects to make a full recovery, just a shame that it had to happen now. He's busted his butt for this program over the last five years."

Johnson stated that Ricks most likely replacement is sophomore Derrick Sanders who has spent his career to this point as the nickelback. Ricks ends his career as Niagara's all-time NCAA leader in interceptions with 12. He also had 76 tackles and 1 QB sack in a little over two seasons as a starter.

Ricks joins LB D.J. Daniloff and TE Latimer Iorg as Rhinos who have gone down with injury over the last two weeks. Daniloff suffered a back injury against Memphis and is expected to be out another 7-8 weeks. Junior Bubba Anderson got his first career start in Daniloff's absence, registering four tackles and a pass defended. TE Iorg has a torn pectoral muscle and his timetable to return in yet unknown, but team sources expect he likely wouldn't be 100% until possibly bowl season. Junior Rasheed Barnes played most of the USF game in place of Iorg, who was injured on the first series. Rasheed pulled in two catches for 34 yards. He started as a true freshman and had 25 catches including 5 touchdowns, but lost his starting job to Iorg last season.

Nunyer's Note: There's the pre-determined defensive injury... now everybody else stay healthy dammit!

Yea, I was getting into a nasty habit these first few games of trying to throw Gibbs open... and he has made some pretty great catches in coverage... but it's not how I like to play. USF had two solid starting CBs, but fell off after that... and I was able to find Kubiak open in the slot quite a bit, so that was promising. I was hoping for big things from Iorg this season, hadn't quite panned out... but he has potential and he's one of my few competent run blockers.

                            Nunyer's Notes

Finally! my first game against an American Conference opponent where the CPU QB played well! As I mentioned in the game story, they killed me underneath... I was largely playing man coverage early , and my outside corners are pretty good... so they would kill me in the slot. Then I'd try some Cover 3... and they'd kill me in the slot and/or over the middle. They had maybe 3 or 4 passes that went for more than 20 yards... but just kept finding seven yards on 3rd and 6.

On the ground game, I called a lot more traditional option plays and was able to spring some pitches to Kandakai for a few 15-19 yard gains... at the expense of Palinski taking hits and staying in the "blood red" zone for his stamina on the play calling screen... So not sure if that's a recipe for continued success or not... but it was nice to see a YPC average over 3.5.

Overall, a very enjoyable game from the perspective of sitting behind the controller. Never felt comfortable either way... most games you get that gut feeling that it's an easy-ish win so long as you don't piss the bed... or there are those rare games where the CPU can do no wrong... This was neither of those... Right until they batted down my final pass attempt, I was still in it without ever feeling cheated. This might be the most balanced and overall enjoyable game I've played on this thread.

EDIT: I forgot to comment on the 94-yard pick six that I threw...

So it's like 2nd and goal and I'm in a shotgun, my read is to the left where I have Gibbs on a slant and Kubiak on an out. Pre-snap I see a blitz look from the right, I don't bother shifting any protection, mainly because I typically don't do that against the CPU but also because I figure one of those two routes is going to be clean... Well, Gibbs gets hung up momentarily on press coverage but Kubiak is uncovered through his break to the sideline... might not be a touchdown, but it's going to be a race to the pylon... and I hit the wrong button... as I'm rolling slightly to my left... a hilariously bizarre lame duck floats off to the right... CPU guy picks it off and the closest I get is 3-4 yards away from making the tackle as he scores... My first "wrong button" this season and a hall of fame bad interception. I have temporarily stopped recording my game footage as I'm low on storage space, but damn I wished I could have shared that play... it was so horrifically bad that I can't help but want to share it for some laughs... I went into the replay system after the game, but the replay picked up at the 30 yard line long after the pick.
