      Malcolm Francois to take over play calling duties vs. Florida as freshman Harrell expected to make first career start
      Sean Caesar -- The Athletic

      South Florida Bulls head coach Malcolm Francois will resume play-calling duties for the team in their upcoming game against the Florida Gators, according to Anthony Rapp of ESPN.

      Francois later told Jay McMahon of the Tampa Bay Gazzette he talked to associate head coach Marcel Smith (offense), who had been calling the plays, and said the switch is "just a change in structure."

      Francois gave up his play-calling duties back when the team hired Smith four years ago to focus more of his energy on the defensive and special teams units as well as recruiting. But coming off a ten turnover game that featured three quarterbacks throwing interceptions, including four from returning starter David Johnson, a change was in order.

      "I think there is sort of an identity crisis in Tampa happening," Rapp said in an interview on WQAM 560, "[Francois] believes in running the football, power spread if you will and I think the success they had with the two receivers [Zac White and Franklin Sapp] sort of jaded Marcel [Smith] and his play-calling. The Bulls are traditionally a run first team and when you're throwing seven interceptions, it doesn't matter that you lead the country in passing offense."

      The Bulls are also anticipating a switch a quarterback after burning freshman Michael Harrell's redshirt. While an official decision hasn't been announced, those close to the program are "confident" that Harrell will get the start over Johnson.

      Rapp wasn't willing to go that far.

      "The people I talk to, they expect to see Michael [Harrell] to get in the game due to his athleticism and the fact that they did essentially waste what was to be a redshirt season."

            Following huge win over Florida, Bulls rack up more wins off the field in recruiting battle with pair of four-star commits
            Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

            In a big weekend that featured several top players visiting campus, USF was able to come away with verbal commitments from three of the prospects that were on site for the team's win over Florida.

            Four-star athletes Brandon Burns and Erik Bass both committed to the Bulls as well as receiver John Dixon out of Lake Wales, Florida. Burns and Bass are the Bulls first four-star commits of the class and also their first out of state grabs.

            In Burns, the Bulls went to California to get a very talented athlete that projects at either defensive back or receiver at the next level. While Burns is arguably more comfortable at defensive back, his lack of elite speed might have the Bulls slide him in at receiver.

            Bass is another athlete that can be deployed in a multitude of ways and after beating out Alabama and Auburn for the Alabama product, Bass might either see the field as a big running back at 246 pounds or perhaps move to defense at linebacker. A good comparison for Bass is Fred Hooper. Hooper unfortunately never found his footing at one position, bouncing around but he has put together a few solid performances in his last two seasons.

            The guessing game can stop with Dixon as he will be a receiver in the Bulls offense and is one of the faster players in the state, if not the fastest. His size at six-foot-three and 213 pounds puts him closer to Franklin Sapp than Mike Holmes but a lesser version most likely.

            The Bulls were looking to get a commitment from five-star running back Troy Henry who was on campus but that is still on the horizon. Three-star quarterback Jeremy Thomas is also on commit watch after what he described as a "very special time" in Tampa.

            HB Troy Henry [HB #3]: 5'10", 195lbs | Alexander City, AL | 5-star :: USF, Oregon, Arizona
            Notes: Henry is a heavy USF lean that is currently on commit watch. No scheduled visits yet to Oregon or Arizona.

            G Brian Smith [G #1]: 6'4", 309lbs | Clearwater, FL | 4-star :: USF, Florida, Georgia
            Notes: Smith was on campus last weekend and enjoyed his visit but likely going to be a long battle with SEC powerhouses Florida and Georgia.

            T Derek Charles [T #3]: 6'5", 269lbs | Burbank, CA | 4-star :: USF, Boise, Colorado State, Oklahoma, Oregon.
            Notes: USF continues to trend upwards with Charles and is slated to be on campus in the next few weeks.

            TE Ben Hawthorne [TE #6]: 6'3", 242lbs | Tampa, FL | 4-star :: USF, Notre Dame
            Notes: USF made up a lot of ground over the weekend with the local four-star product but Notre Dame won't go away easily.

            T Ryan Williams [T #8]: 6'4", 280lbs | Cartersville, GA | 4-star :: USF, Tennessee, Northwestern.
            Notes: After visiting the Bulls this weekend, Williams is set to visit Tennessee in two weeks.

            CB Sonny Underwood [CB #1]: 6'1", 181lbs | Miami, FL | 4-star :: Iowa, USF
            Notes: Beating Iowa is going to be tough, going to be a long recruiting battle between the Bulls and the Hawkeyes.

            QB Jeremy Thomas [QB #21]: 6'1", 242lbs | Calhoun, GA | 3-star :: USF, Alabama
            Notes: The expectations are for Thomas to commit any minute now, even with the change of the offense towards a more power running game.

            S Chris Wade [S #26]: 6'1", 177lbs | Tampa, FL | 3-star :: USF, UCF, Miami
            Notes: Wade continues to lean more and more towards the Bulls.

            S Pierre Hodge [S #36]: 6'0", 195lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star :: USF, South Carolina
            Notes: The Bulls are closing in on the former South Carolina commit.

                  Bulls keep the streak going, land five-star running back Troy Henry along with QB of the class
                  Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

                  It wasn't that long ago that USF being in the running for a five-star recruit was big news. Nowadays, the Bulls are landing them at a literal unprecedented rate.For the third straight class, if the commitment holds, Malcolm Francois and his staff have landed a five-star.

                  Over the weekend, USF got commitments from five-star running back Troy Henry, three-star quarterback Jeremy Thomas and three-star safety Chris Wade. Henry is a major get for the Bulls, especially if they continue to run a power spread offense that has led to wins over Florida and Oklahoma State since Francois took over as play caller. At 195 pounds with legit 4.36 speed, Henry is a speedster that also brings a bit of pop with his ability to finish runs.

                  While Henry is a perfect fit for the Bulls current offense, Jeremy Thomas might not be. Thomas is a traditional pocket passing quarterback with very limited mobility but if Francois and the staff want to keep running a two quarterback offense and have some versatility in the quarterback room, pairing him with another mobile quarterback would be a home run hence why the Bulls are now going after Dallas, Texas quarterback James Pittman, a three-star dual-threat quarterback.

                  The final get of the weekend was in the form of a potential project in safety Chris Wade. Wade doesn't have the most impressive physical skills but with decent length at safety, Wade gives the secondary yet another body in a defense that loves deploying nickel and dime looks. With potentially two defensive backs in the bag in Brandon Burns and Wade, USF has another one coming down the pipe in Pierre Hodge and have also started recruiting four-star safety Sam Peterson.

                  Peterson is out of Glenrcok, Wyoming and transferred to IMG Academy this fall and has earned his fourth star.

                              Gators get the last laugh, land surprise commitment from Bulls target, 4-star offensive tackle Williams
                              Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

                              The stage appeared set for the South Florida Bulls to land a five-star running back and an all-star cast of offensive linemen in Brian Smith, Derek Charles and Ryan Williams. We now know that that won't be the case and they'll be lucky to get just one of them.

                              The Florida Gators were able to land four-star offensive tackle Ryan Williams out of Cartersville, Georgia, snatching him away from the grasp of the Bulls after having the lead in his recruitment for several weeks since Williams visited the Bulls and watched them beat the Gators. The commitment also saw the Gators leap frog the Bulls to jump ahead to #10 in the recruiting rankings and slide USF to 12 and gives Florida it's second four-star offensive linemen of the class.

                              Where does that leave USF? Not in a great place.

                              South Florida is still in the running for four-star offensive tackle Derek Charles out of California but getting an elite talent to leave the West Coast is going to be a tall task when Oregon is in the running and if he does decide to leave the West Coast, Oklahoma might be seen as a better option.

                              There is also Brian Smith, the top rated guard in this class who USF simply cannot lose to the Gators. Smith is a local kid and losing him to Florida would be a big blow, especially if they also lose out on Tampa prospect Ben Hawthorne to Kentucky as the four-star tight end has been showing a lot of love on social media to the Wildcats.

                              If USF swings and misses on Charles and Smith, they'll be left with a class without an offensive linemen. The Bulls did offer two-star offensive lineman Roger Spencer over the weekend but he's a project at best.
