    Parham commits to Miami following visit leaving USF's offensive line class in shambles
    Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

    USF head coach Malcolm Francois typically gets the big time recruits he goes all in on but the University of Miami had other plans.

    Miami was able to leap frog early favorites Cal and USF to land five-star offensive tackle Alex Parham, who committed during his visit to Miami and cancelled his visit to South Florida later this month.

    Parham, the #1 ranked offensive tackle in the nation, was one of just two remaining targets for the Bulls this cycle on the offensive line. The other is offensive guard Jamie Babcock who the Bulls are desperately trying to hang onto as UCF makes a surge.

    The Bulls did offer four-star receiver Marco Mason out of Miami, Florida and three-star JUCO athlete Kyle Bennett out of Englewood, Florida over the weekend.

    On the surface, it appears that USF is closing up shop on the offensive line with not a lot of viable targets available on the market. The Bulls did sign a potential left tackle last cycle in true freshman Nic Haynes and at right tackle have a redshirt sophomore in Isaac Gutierrez and a redshirt freshman in Quinton Payne. Brian Brown is a redshirt freshman at guard and projects to start next season. The situation isn't dire but having a one or two man class at offensive line isn't a habit USF wants to form.

        Recruiting Class in Review: Revisiting Francois' inaugural class ahead of Senior Day
        Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

        In the team's last home game before they move onto the Big 12, it's almost apropos that it will also be Senior Day for Malcolm Francois' first, full recruiting class since taking over as head coach of USF Bulls back in 2013.

        With everyone in that class heading into either their senior or redshirt junior season, let's revisit that class and grade it out.

        2014 USF Bulls Recruiting Class
        HB Leon Ward [HB #11]: 6'0", 186lbs | Fort Lauderdale, FL | 4-star
        Career Stats :: 408 carries, 2605 yards, 25 touchdowns.
        Analysis :: The biggest get of the class, Ward is arguably the most productive one as well and with him becoming the feature back in 2017, Ward is on pace to have a 1,000-yard season and has an outside shot at breaking of a few records.

        QB Grant Oliver [QB #16]: 6'2", 219lbs | Panthersville, GA | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 585 of 841, 7047 yards, 38 touchdowns, 21 interceptions.
        Analysis :: After coming in with a lot of hype, a tough spring showing saw Oliver's stock drop and he spent his first two seasons as a backup in Tampa. In 2016, Oliver splashed onto the scene and hasn't looked back since. If he comes back next season as a redshirt senior and leads USF to a successful maiden campaign in the Big 12, Oliver will enter his name in the discussions of best ever to do it at USF.

        LB Gary Prince [LB #23]: 6'3", 235lbs | Waggaman, LA | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 2 tackles.
        Analysis :: It's easy to forget that Prince was the third highest ranked player in this class and at the time viewed as a big win over LSU. Prince has just two tackles to his name and has largely been a special teams player. He is the projected starter for next season, however.

        OLB Jeffrey Reese [OLB #24]: 6'2", 238lbs | Plant City, FL | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 104 tackles, 45 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, interception.
        Analysis :: While Reese has never been able to match the production of his 2015 season, he's put together three solid seasons as a starter and was a four-year contributor. He also mastered the BUCK linebacker position with his blend of speed and strength, laying the blueprint for the next guy in line.

        S Tavarious Bailey [S #26]: 6'2", 199lbs | Lehigh Acres, FL | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 62 tackles, 2 interceptions.
        Analysis :: Bailey was able to get onto the field as a true freshman in 2014 but then saw his playing time limited in 2015. The last few seasons, however, Bailey was returned as a staple in the defense due to his sure tackling. He was never elite in coverage but far from the liability that many thought he would be.

        TE Chris Golden [TE #30]: 6'7", 257lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 32 receptions, 254 yards, 3 touchdowns.
        Analysis :: Golden's stats are never going to fly off the page but as a thee-year contributor and a captain as a senior, Golden's ability to block and be a vertical threat has always made him valuable. He was never able to flip that switch and take that next step into an elite player but for a three-star player, USF fans should be satisfied with his production.

        CB Antwan Shaw [CB #38]: 6'1", 174lbs | Miami, FL, | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 62 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 8 interceptions.
        Analysis :: Shaw had a great freshman season but with the arrival of Georgia transfer Reggie Wilkerson, Shaw did not register a single stat in 2015 and in hindsight, should have been redshirted. Shaw had a bounce back in 2016 with four interceptions and had his best career game against Oklahoma in one of the program's biggest wins.

        CB Leonard Lilly [CB #40]: 6'1", 188lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 54 tackles, 2 interceptions, touchdown.
        Analysis :: Lilly's lack of top end speed saw him switch to safety and after a redshirt season and spending 2015 season as a reserve, Lilly had a few starts last season when Dan Johnson went down with an injury. He continues to be apart of the safety rotation this year and projects to be a locked in starter next season.

        TE Mike Henry [TE #46]: 6'2", 233lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 25 receptions, 383 yards, touchdown.
        Analysis :: The addition of Buck Burns in the subsequent class has limited Henry's production but nevertheless, nothing to sneeze at for a guy that was viewed as a project. Henry primarily played receiver in high school and it's been a transition but the 241 pound tight end is getting there and has another year of eligibility next season.

        HB Richard Miller [HB #53]: 6'2", 217lbs | Tuscaloosa, AL | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 155 carries, 640 yards, 24 touchdowns.
        Analysis :: Miller got stuck behind some talented running backs, a few 1000-yard rushers and fellow class-mate Leon Ward but even with all of that, he still managed to score at least four touchdowns each season and could end his career as USF's all-time rushing touchdown leader with a strong finish to the season.

        TE Thomas Moore [TE #59]: 6'0", 231lbs | Jacksonville, FL | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 4 carries, 14 yards, touchdown, 20 receptions, 154 yards.
        Analysis :: Moore was converted to fullback as soon as he got to USF and has been a solid player since as a two-year starter.

        WR Chris Walker [WR #70]: 6'4", 198lbs | West Augusta, GA | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 16 receptions, 189 yards, 2 touchdowns at USF // 25 receptions, 271 yards, 2 touchdowns at Georgia State
        Analysis :: Walker lasted two seasons at USF before transferring to Georgia State where he's had some production. At the time, it was a solid take for USF but given how the position has attracted elite talent since, not sure if Walker would be a take now.

        DT Ross Barron [DT #70]: 6'2", 293lbs | Largo, FL | 3-star
        Career Stats :: 8 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 2 sacks.
        Analysis :: Barron hasn't been able to get on the field much in the team's 3-4 scheme which deploys just one defensive tackle and prefers to have more athletic defensive ends at the five-technique. Barron has shown some splashes this season with two sacks and another year as a redshirt senior will help him.

        T Terry Scales [T #76]: 6'3", 315lbs | Farmington, MI | 3-star
        Career Stats :: No stats.
        Analysis :: Never played for the Bulls.

        DT Dennis Martin [DT #92]: 6'3", 292lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
        Career Stats :: No stats.
        Analysis :: Martin failed to qualify academically as a freshman and never played.

        T David Mitchell [T #119]: 6'6", 33lbs | Valdosta, GA | 2-star JUCO
        Career Stats :: No stats.
        Analysis :: Mitchell never got onto the field and quite frankly, Mitchell was mainly a body to add to the offensive line.

        G Russ Martin [G #163]: 6'3", 283lbs | Miami, FL | 1-star JUCO
        Career Stats :: No stats.
        Analysis :: Never played for the Bulls.

        Superlative Awards
        Most Important Signing: This is a toss up between Ward and Oliver but ultimately, landing Ward as an in-state four-star recruit gave Francois and the Bulls staff the legs it needed on the recruiting trail to land some other talented guys.

        Most Productive Signing: At first glance, this appeared to once again be between Ward and Oliver but it's actually Reese. Reese contributed all four seasons and was a starter for the last three with multiple all-conference honors to his name.

        Biggest Bust of the Class: He has another year left but Gary Prince was ranked higher than Jeffrey Reese, Tavarious Bailey, Antwan Shaw and Leonard Lilly. Prince has been stuck behind some great linebackers and next season will be his show case but given the hype of going into SEC country and landing him, Bulls fans expected a four-year contributor.

        Most Untapped Potential: TE Chris Golden's college career is nothing to sneeze but when you look at his measurables, there is no reason to think that he wouldn't be a sure-fire NFL guy. He's far from a bust but the Bulls coaching staff would sure love to have him for another year or two.

        Biggest Steal of the Class: Antwan Shaw was considered to be a lock to Florida Atlantic and at the last minute, USF was able to flip him and got an all-conference player in return.

        Biggest Lost of the Class: The biggest story that cycle was USF trying to hang onto defensive Sheldon Corbett, a six-foot-seven four-star defensive end that was once committed to the Bulls. Corbett ended up at Georgia Tech and after three seasons as a backup, Corbett has 36 tackles on the season but just two career sacks. WR Tyrone Gibbons was also another tough loss to Ole Miss with Gibbons having 51 career receptions for 780 yards and twelve touchdowns.

          Bulls lose out on LB Hollis but land four-star DT Newsome among others
          Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

          Ever since Malcolm Francois took over as head coach of the South Florida Bulls, the Bulls have always had big recruiting weekends with a ton of kids on campus and for the most part, they come with commitments.

          Such was the case this weekend when several prospects attended the team's win over Cincinnati and then saw four-star defensive tackle E.J. Newsome, four-star receiver Mike Holmes, four-star athlete Victory Tucker, three-star running back Greg Johnston, three-star defensive tackle Justin Barry, three-star linebacker Matt Stewart, three-star cornerback Michael Walker and three-star safety Aaron Graham all commit over the weekend.

          Starting with the four stars, Newsome is talented, 265 pound defensive tackle that could play five technique in the team's 3-4 scheme as well as defensive tackle in their four-man fronts. The Bulls beat out Georgia Tech for the Alabama product. In Holmes, Florida and Florida State were all in play for the speedy slot receiver who projects very well in the Bulls offense. Tucker was a late bloomer, earning his fourth star during his senior season and didn't have many major offers. Tucker is a six-three, 264 pound prospect that projects to be a defensive end at the next level.

          USF did lose out on linebacker Kevin Hollis with the Miami product committing to nearby FIU. FIU is also trending upwards with three-star guard Jamie Babcock as is UCF. This late into the cycle, losing out on Babcock could lead USF to take only one offensive linemen in this class in G Maurice Williams.

          The Bulls have very few players left on the board. The biggest fish is four-star safety Chip Bryant out of Boynton Beach who is deciding between the Bulls and Oklahoma in a recruitment battle that will likely bleed into the new year. Mark Gray, the three-star cornerback out of New Jersey, remains in play as well as three-star defensive end Mark Hawkins and three-star tight end Joe Wayne.

          New names to keep in mind are receiver Marco Mason, JUCO athlete Kyle Bennett and linebacker John Stone, who also eligibility issues.

            Hawkins and Kimbrough latest addition to the class while Wayne and Babcock continue to trend in wrong direction
            Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

            Four-star WR Scott Kimbrough out of Red Bank, South Carolina and Venice, Florida three-star defensive end Mark Hawkins are the latest addition to a stack 2018 recruiting class for the USF Bulls.

            Kimbrough, who was being recruited by Clemson and South Carolina, is a six-foot, 202 pound receiver that is more dangerous with the ball in his hands than without it. His stocky build could lend him to make a similar transition as Alex Strong to running back. It will likely depend on what the Bulls decide to do with five-star athlete Trey Davis who could end up anywhere from running back, receiver to defensive back.

            Hawkins is a prototypical edge rusher with less than ideal speed but good enough to stay on the edge. His limited athleticism will likely keep him away from playing that BUCK linebacker position but with time, Hawkins could end up there or bulk up and stay inside.

            Two players that USF isn't expecting a commitment from anymore are guard Jamie Babcock and tight end Joe Wayne. Wayne was once considered a lock but the staff allowed other schools such as Baylor, SMU and UL-Monroe to make late push for the tight end. The Bulls could enter 2018 with just two scholarship tight ends on the roster, a position they were once loaded at.

              New Jersey CB commits to Oklahoma State but Bulls continue hot run at receiver while Wayne saga continues
              Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

              Oklahoma State landed a talented corner in three-star cornerback Mark Gray who USF had been targeting all cycle and was in a good position to land the six-foot-one, athletic corner out of Wayne, New Jersey.

              Gray's commitment to Oklahoma State was lessened by the news of four-star receiver Marco Mason would be committing to the Bulls. Mason is listed at six-foot-two and 221 pounds and gives USF their fourth receiver in the class, not counting five-star athlete Trey Davis. The other four are all four-stars in Joel Green, Scott Kimbrough and Mike Holmes.

              Holmes is a straight speedster with 4.36 speed while Green and Kimbrough are bigger receivers that are more runners than true route runners. Mason is a blend with his powerful frame with still elite top end speed having clocked in a 4.40 forty time during his junior season.

              Shortly after Gray's commitment, 'former' USF target tight end Joe Wayne released a top two which included just SMU and UL-Monroe. Within a few hours, Wayne deleted the post and posted a new top three which included the Bulls. According to reports, head coach Malcolm Francois drove down to Brownsville, Texas during the bye week to meet with Wayne.

                USF safety Johnson leads overachieving defense into BCS National Championship Game vs. Alabama
                Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

                USF sophomore safety Dan Johnson -- then a true freshman -- had to watch from the sidelines with a cast on his foot as fellow recruiting class-mate out of his home state of Georgia, Franklin Sapp and Zac White, earned Freshman All-American honors and became fan favorites.

                Johnson was part of the talented class that included Sapp and White and started as a true freshman as well before a foot injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. Johnson was still getting into the groove of things as a college player and his first game was a shellacking at the hands of the Stanford Cardinal.

                "You don't want to overreact to one game," said USF defensive coordinator Marty English, "But it was sort of watershed moment of us as a staff, as a defense to just take a step back and figure out and say to ourselves 'this isn't working, how do we fix it?' And that question started with D.J. [Johnson]."

                English had opted to use Johnson, one of the fastest players on the team, as a single high safety throughout the 2016 season and in the opener against Stanford. English and the rest of the defensive staff re-watched some of Johnson's tape as a high school senior and realized that the sophomore was better utilized closer to the line of scrimmage. USF started playing safety Leonard Lilly more as the single high safety and instead deployed Johnson closer to the box. Within a few weeks, Johnson stopped having an assigned role and instead became a heat-seeking missile.

                "I sort of line up where I think I should be," says Johnson of his freedom, "We have schemes and we try to stick to those and their principles but if I see something I don't like, I have the freedom to maybe flip sides or come down or bail on a blitz. Coach [English] trusts me to make that decision."

                The unpredictability of Johnson and by extension the defense will be important for the Bulls in their BCS National Championship Game match-up against the Alabama Crimson Tide. They haven't faced a quarterback like Robert Mueller with legit sub 4.4-speed and Johnson's run support will be needed against Tyren Jones, who has rushed for 1337 yards.

                The Bulls go into the game as huge underdogs, the biggest in national championship history but that's nothing new for a defense that came into the year with many predicting them to be one of the country's worst.

                Like blood brothers: the intense and unbreakable bond between two Georgia boys living out their dreams
                Sean Caesar -- The Athletic

                It doesn't take more than a few minutes around the #2 South Florida Bulls to figure out who the alpha dog is. It's the five-foot-ten, 'grown *** of a man' that weighs all of his listed 220 pounds that is USF receiver Zac White.

                "I'm the biggest and baddest mother****er you know," White spat at cornerback and teammate senior Antwan Shaw, "You better ask about me!"

                The setting? A light walk-through in a conference room at the Marriott Hotel where the Bulls are staying until they play the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide for the team's first ever national championship game.

                White was recently named to the All-AAC team while also breaking the school record for most receptions in a season and also tying his own record for most touchdowns in a season which he set as a true freshman last season. He also sealed USF's perfect in-conference record with a game winning touchdown off a deflected pass in the final minutes of the season finale against rival UCF, who White almost signed with. These accolades are only adding to the fuel that is White's confidence and he didn't need them to proclaim himself as the 'biggest and mother****er' you and I know.

                "[White] came in like this," says Shaw, "From the first practice, he's going at Reggie [Wilkerson] who was an all-conference corner, a guy that we all knew was going to be in the league by next year and he had no fear as a true freshman, you know, just a few weeks removed from going to high school classes. So watching him, as a junior, have that much confidence, it helped put a battery in my back to be more confident, to be more daring. He does that to the entire team, he's the spark plug for sure."

                While White puts the battery in his teammate's back, it's a more quiet but just as electric teammate that puts the battery in his. Despite going to high school less than 45 minutes from each other, White and fellow receiver Franklin Sapp had never spoken to each other before White and Sapp's recruiting visit to USF during the team's win over East Carolina back in 2015.

                Throughout the recruiting process, White was the highly sought after five-star who most of the attention was on while Sapp, a talented four-star recruit of his own, sort of got lost in the hype as the team went after White and another Georgia five-star in safety Dan Johnson. Sapp committed that weekend and stayed off social media, legitimately shutting down his recruitment while White continued to take visits.

                "He never really recruited me," says White of his relationship with Sapp, "I think we spoke a few times after that official visit but it was more so me trying to get a feel on things because he enrolled early but he wasn't very talkative."

                Sapp's quiet demeanor didn't change when White signed with the Bulls on a historic national signing day. While seemingly everyone was celebrating with retweets on Twitter, Sapp's social media pages remained quiet. At one point, White wondered if perhaps Sapp had an issue with him as even when they became roommates, Sapp was quiet. And then they got on the field together.

                Sapp's Olympic level speed isn't god given. The six-foot-three receiver wakes up in the wee hours of the morning, even on off days, and heads to the track for several hours. As a freshman during the offseason, Sapp would always be hanging around the team's facility as much as he could without incurring a NCAA violation. White, his roommate, had no choice but to keep up.

                "I feed off his energy and work ethic," says White, "The bottom line is we're always going to be compared to each other and I don't want to be on the short end of that and neither does he so when we go out there, we're looking to kill. We both want to be the best receiver in the nation and you can't do that without being the best receiver on your own state, on your own team so we push each other that way. He's quiet but that mother****er is a killer, straight up."

                Both Sapp and White were high school defensive backs and had several top schools recruiting them to play defensive back so they're able to compete against each other head on, rendering them inseparable. They've toppled over countless items in the apartment that they share while going up against another. If you're in the hotel room floor above them during their road games, you can hear their feet pounding the ground as they run routes in the hallway. Before each game, they each write what each other's stat-line is going to be on a hidden notepad. If either one of them fails to reach the mark, it's 20 100-yard gassers on the morning following game day.

                The stat-line for the BCS Championship Game?

                "100 each, 2 touchdowns. Simple."

                    Rekstis replaces English as defensive coordinator following move to Boston College
                    Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                    Less than 48 hours after losing the BCS National Championship to Alabama, USF is without the defensive coordinator that turned it's defense around.

                    Defensive coordinator Marty English was hired as the head coach for Boston College while

                    Pete Rekstis, a former head coach at UMass before being fired after a 1-11 season, will replace English as the team's defensive coordinator.

                    Before arriving at UMass, Rekstis was named the Owls defensive coordinator in March 2012. Rekstis came to FAU with eight years experience as the defensive coordinator at Miami University and Kent State University, both of the Mid-American Conference.

                    While at Kent State, four defensive backs joined NFL teams. Usama Young (Saints, 3rd Round, 2007) and Jack Williams (Broncos, 4th Round, 2008) were drafted while Abe Elam (Browns) and Daniel Muir (Colts) worked their way onto a NFL team as a free agents. In 2011, defensive lineman Roosevelt Nix became the fi rst freshman ever to win the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year award. His 2010 Kent State defense was ranked No. 2 nationally in tackles for a loss (8.3), No. 5 in rushing defense (97.2), No. 11 in sacks (2.9) and No. 13 in total defense (306.7). The Golden Flash also set a school record high with 35 sacks. KSU also held two 2010 opponents to negative rushing yards.

                    The switch will see the Bulls return to a 4-3 scheme as opposed to the 3-4 scheme that English implemented while in Tampa.

                    The team also considered fired Kansas coach Pat Narduzzi for the position.

                    Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                    With an announcement on social media, USF's prolific quarterback Grant Oliver joined the rest of his recruiting class mate in playing his last game in the BCS National Championship Game.

                    Oliver, a redshirt junior, announced that he will forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft after two years of lighting up the USF record books. Oliver joins starters Leon Ward, Thomas Moore and Jeffrey Reese among countless others.

                    This graduating class marks the first one that played all four seasons for USF and with redshirt seniors graduating, the roster is now completely turned over with no more remaining players from the previous regime.

                    Key West native LB Albert Young transfers to USF after lone season at Northwestern
                    Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

                    Former three-star linebacker Albert Young out of Key West, Florida is transferring from Northwestern to the University of South Florida.

                    Young, listed at six-foot-one and 229 pounds, played just one season at Northwestern where he failed to register a stat before deciding to move back closer to home. The addition brings USF's scholarship counter to 16 and by all accounts, the magic number for this recruiting cycle is 18.

                    The Bulls are still in on several targets such as four-star Chip Bryant who is a take, three-star tight end Joe Wayne who is take due to a need at the position and then you have 'nice to have' in linebacker John Stone and JUCO prospect Kyle Bennett.

                    Bryant has a top two of USF and Oklahoma while Wayne is down to SMU, UL-Monroe and the Bulls. Bennett and Stone's lone D1 scholarship offer at this moment are with the Bulls although anything can change for the rising senior Stone and JUCO star Bennett.

                    By all accounts, the Bulls do plan on taking in all four players and figuring out the number situation later. It gets even more tricky if say guard Jamie Babcock decides to come after learning towards UCF for most of the last few months.

                    USF will enter National Signing Day with the third ranked class in the country.

                    ------------------------

                    USF slides in rankings but still finishes in top ten after landing all three top targets
                    Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

                    USF's run of getting the players they really want on National Signing Day continues.

                    The Bulls were able to beat out future conference rival Oklahoma for four-star safety Chip Bryant out of Boynton Beach, Florida, kept rival UCF at bay in a comeback win for three-star guard Jamie Babcock and went into Texas and got three-star tight end Joe Wayne back in the fold.

                    The three commitments couldn't help USF keep their #3 ranking heading into the day but it did land them the nation's sixth ranked recruiting class and the top class among all Florida schools.

                    If USF had more scholarships available, their ranking might have been aided as they couldn't take JUCO three-star Kyle Bennett or three-star linebacker John Stone.

                    The conference is going with a North and South division with the champion of each division playing the Big 12 Championship Game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

                    USF lands second highest ranked recruit in state of Florida in five-star ATH Marcus Hines
                    Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

                    No matter what happens this cycle, USF is going to have at least one blue chip prospect in five-star athlete Marcus Hines.

                    The five-star athlete out of Tampa, Florida committed to the Bulls before the start of his senior season in hopes of focusing in on his senior campaign. Hines, who is listed at six-foot-two and plays both receiver and corner, recently ran a 4.34 forty time at the Nike Opening. Hines projects to be a corner at the next level and that's the position USF is recruiting him at.

                    USF is targeting five-star James Thomas, the athlete out of Miami and Miami receiver Ben Medlock, another five-star. Those remain uphill battles with Thomas leaning Oregon and Florida for Medlock.

                    The Bulls are also in the mix for four-star quarterback Peter Griffin, the fourth ranked player in the state of Florida behind Thomas, Hines and Medlock. The Bulls are hoping the addition of Hines, who could play receiver, and tight end Brian Knox out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida will entice the likes of Griffin.

                    Hines joins Knox, a three-star tight end, and Texas four-star linebacker Stephen Hill as the current members of the Bulls' recruiting class.

                      2018 USF Bulls football preview: Who gets the start at quarterback in the anticipated opener vs. Florida?
                      Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                      If USF wasn't playing Florida in it's opener in Gainesville, many say that redshirt freshman David Johnson would be the starter. His arm talent is undeniable and while he lacks skill position level top end speed, he does bring more explosiveness as a runner than any of the other quarterback.

                      With that being said, USF is playing Florida in the opener and throwing a redshirt freshman -- no matter how talented -- into that environment is problematic.

                      A look at USF’s quarterback situation:

                      Projected depth chart
                      #9 Steven McKenzie, Rs Jr. | 6'1", 214lbs | 87 ovr, 70 spd, 79 thp, 85 tha OR
                      #10 David Johnson, Rs Fr. | 6'3", 212lbs | 82 ovr, 73 spd, 86 thp, 88 tha OR
                      #15 Mario Greer, Rs Jr. | 6'1", 196lbs | 81 ovr, 69 spd, 82 thp, 86 tha
                      #11 Brandon Tidwell, Rs So. | 6'3", 195lbs | 75 ovr, 72 spd, 80 thp, 87 tha

                      Expected starter: Johnson's upside as a thrower might simply be too much to ignore not to mention that not starting him could cause him to transfer. A starter hasn't been named and might not be named until game week vs. Florida but all signs are pointing to either Johnson or McKenzie.

                      Major storyline: What happens with Greer and McKenzie if Johnson is the guy? All accounts point to Greer wanting to be a Bull but if McKenzie loses the job to a freshman, could he be gone next season as a graduate transfer?

                      2018 USF Bulls football preview: How does five-star athlete Trey Davis fit into the picture?
                      Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                      USF lost their number two and number three all-time leaders in career rushing touchdowns when Leon Ward and Richard Miller graduated this spring. When the Bulls signed five-star athlete Trey Davis, many wondered if running back could be a place for the do-it-all freshman phenom but ultimately, the need to replace a depleted defensive backfield was too much.

                      When fall camp began, Davis found himself back working with the running backs and receivers. He's clearly talented enough and brings a different dynamic -- speed -- to a running back room that looks a few trips to the cafeteria away from being a defensive line room.

                      A look at USF’s running back situation:

                      Projected depth chart
                      #8 David Ross, So. | 6'1", 223lbs | 82 ovr, 85 spd, 86 acc, 84 btk, 82 car
                      #25 Alex Strong, Sr. | 6'1", 230lbs | 79 ovr, 88 spd, 87 acc, 78 btk, 99 car
                      #3 Trey Davis, Fr. | 6'1", 186lbs | 89 spd, 89 acc, 71 btk, 46 car
                      #29 Brian Reynolds, Rs So. | 6'0", 231lbs | 78 ovr, 86 spd, 92 acc, 76 btk, 69 car
                      #13 Scott Kimbrough, Fr. | 6'0", 202lbs | 63 ovr, 85 spd, 82 acc, 58 btk, 91 car
                      #32 Greg Johnston, Fr. | 6'0", 198lbs | 62 ovr, 92 spd, 83 acc, 58 btk, 56 car

                      Expected starter: Outside of the true freshman in Greg Johnson and converted receiver Scott Kimbrough, expect all top four running backs to be heavily involved with Ross being the leader.

                      Major storyline: Davis, like Ward last season, brings a different dynamic to the table with his speed. Of the top four backs, he's the only one under 223 pounds and he moves like it. Davis played the position briefly during his junior season in more of a Tyreke Hill/De'Anthony Thomas so he's not a natural running back but in terms of potential, he has the most out of the group.

                      2018 USF Bulls football preview: A full-blown race for the record books is happening at receiver
                      Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                      USF's school records at receiver are littered with the names Zac White and Franklin Sapp with the two juniors owning all the single-season records. The career records, however, belong to D'Vario Montgomery with 162 receptions for 2246 yards with White already owning the record for most career touchdowns with 20.

                      Sapp needs just 11 yards to break the record while White needs sixteen catches for break the reception record. Don't count White out on the yardage record either as he might be behind Sapp by 253 yards, he's shown in the final games of the season that he's not just a possession receiver and capable of big games of his own.

                      Outside of Sapp and White, Sharp has started to show promises while true freshman Trey Davis is also expected to be in the mix at receiver.

                      A look at USF’s receiver situation:

                      Projected depth chart
                      #1 Zac White, Jr. | 5'10", 220lbs | 92 ovr, 89 spd, 87 acc, 99 cth
                      #4 Franklin Sapp, Jr. | 6'3", 187lbs | 88 ovr, 97 spd, 98 acc, 88 cth
                      #6 Corey Sharp, Jr. | 6'1", 195lbs | 85 ovr, 88 spd, 92 acc, 92 cth
                      #85 Mike Holmes, Fr. | 6'0", 183lbs | 77 ovr, 93 spd, 91 acc, 71 cth
                      #3 Trey Davis, Fr. | 6'1", 186lbs | 79 ovr, 89 spd, 89 acc, 52 cth
                      #89 Matt Hill, Rs So. | 6'1", 198lbs | 75 ovr, 88 spd, 82 acc, 79 cth
                      #87 Jay Stevens, Jr. | 6'0", 193lbs | 80 ovr, 85 spd, 84 acc, 83 cth

                      Expected starter: White and Sapp on the outside with Sharp and Holmes rotating at slot. Holmes really came on during spring practices and his speed might be able to get him onto the field early as a freshman.

                      Major storyline: Once again, it's Trey Davis. He's not a natural receiver but his physical tools allow him to be able to make plays at the position and according to reports, part of the reason why USF was able to get him was they promised him some playing time on offense. Will he be a contributor or just a gimmick to be thrown out there once in a while?

                      -------------------

                      2018 USF Bulls football preview: Will Burns finally be able to put together the productive season many expected?
                      Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                      Before the magical class that came the year after, tight end Buck Burns was one of Malcolm Francois' biggest recruiting wins. Since then, Burns has been a productive main-stay of the offense with at least thirty catches in each of the last two seasons.

                      Towards the end of last season, Burns found his groove and finished the year with a career high 343 yards. With Chris Golden gone, Burns is expected to be the top tight end this season and get most of the snaps. Will he take full advantage of it?

                      A look at USF’s tight end situation:

                      Projected depth chart
                      #81 Buck Burns, Sr. | 6'1", 241lbs | 84 ovr, 81 spd, 81 acc, 75 cth, 81 rbk
                      #88 Mike Henry, Rs Sr. | 6'2", 240lbs | 84 ovr, 81 spd, 80 acc, 84 cth, 79 rbk
                      #83 Joe Wayne, Fr. | 6'4", 252lbs | 66 ovr, 74 spd, 85 acc, 61 cth, 64 rbk

                      Expected starter: Burns' experience gets him the slight edge.

                      Major storyline: Henry's ability as a natural pass catcher has always made him a wild card and with his run blocking catching up to his receiving, could he steal some snaps from Burns?

                      ----------------------------

                      2018 USF Bulls football preview: Can the right side of the offensive line hold up?
                      Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                      It doesn't seem that long ago that USF head coach Malcolm Francois made a last ditch effort to sign Darren Charles and keep the talented prospect a part of the USF class. Charles is now a senior and returning for his fourth year as a starter next to Derrick Drew, a three-year starter, and Maurice Bell, a four-year starter.

                      The right side is a different story with true freshman Victor Tucker, who weighed 261 pounds and was playing defensive end eight months, starting at right guard and a first-year starter in junior Isaac Gutierrez.

                      A look at USF’s offensive line situation:

                      Projected depth chart
                      LT - #77 Daren Charles, Sr. :: #72 Nic Haynes, RS Fr.
                      LG - #68 Derrick Drew, Rs Jr. :: #63 Zac Thomas, Rs Sr.
                      C - #53 Maurice Bell, Sr. :: #74 Kenny Brantley, Rs Jr.
                      RG - #69 Victor Tucker, Fr. :: #79 Brian Brown, Rs So.
                      RT - #73 Isaac Gutierrez, RS Jr. :: #76 Quinton Payne, RS So.

                      Expected starters:
                      #77 Daren Charles, Sr. | 6'8", 311lbs | 87 ovr, 87 str, 90 pbk, 89 rbk
                      #68 Derrick Drew, Rs Jr. | 6'2", 307lbs | 88 ovr, 87 str, 90 pbk, 88 rbk
                      #53 Maurice Bell, Sr. | 6'4", 271lbs | 95 ovr, 89 str, 91 pbk, 95 rbk
                      #69 Victor Tucker, Fr. | 6'4", 311lbs | 72 ovr, 79 str, 81 pbk, 81 rbk
                      #73 Isaac Gutierrez, RS Jr. | 6'3", 331lbs | 79 ovr, 80 str, 84 pbk, 86 rbk

                      Major storyline: USF is playing the long game with Tucker, similar to what they did with Bell who started as a true freshman as did Charles. Can they survive a season with a true freshman starting at right guard and a first-year starter as right tackle or do they swing Drew to the right side to balance things out?

                        2018 USF Bulls football preview: Prince looking to make impact following position switch
                        Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                        Gary Prince could never make the two-deep at outside linebacker so the team moved him to inside linebacker and after a brief stint there, new defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis is moving Prince once again.

                        Prince heads to defensive end while defensive end Fred Hooper -- who never fit the position -- is moving to linebacker. Prince's frame fits nicely as a 4-3 defensive end and gives the Bulls plenty of athleticism on the edge.

                        A look at USF’s defensive line situation:

                        Projected depth chart
                        DE - #91 Lance Carroll, Rs Sr. :: #95 Bryan Walker, Rs Jr. :: #41 Chris Allen, So.
                        DT - #99 Ross Barron, Rs Sr. :: #93 Jamey Little, Jr. :: #98 Anton Tate, Rs Sr.
                        DT - #14 E.J. Newsome, Fr. :: #96 Ben Woodard, Rs Fr. :: #90 Ben Jennings, Rs Fr.
                        DE - #22 Gary Prince, Rs Sr. :: #97 Mark Hawkins, Fr.

                        Expected starters:
                        #91 Lance Carroll, Rs Sr. | 6'4", 259lbs | 82 ovr, 75 spd, 90 acc, 79 str, 82 bsh
                        #99 Ross Barron, Rs Sr. | 6'2", 313lbs | 84 ovr, 56 spd, 73 acc, 86 str, 86 bsh
                        #14 E.J. Newsome, Fr. | 6'3", 265lbs | 71 ovr, 67 spd, 78 acc, 79 str, 70 bsh
                        #22 Garry Prince, Rs Sr. | 6'3", 247lbs | 79 ovr, 81 spd, 99 acc, 74 str, 89 bsh

                        Major storyline: In the team's new 4-3 scheme, they are going back to two interior defensive linemen, a look we haven't seen from the Bulls in quite some time. Barron is a traditional nose but Newsome fits that 4-3 defensive tackle position perfectly with his blend of speed and strength. There will be a learning curve but he's perfect for the position.

                        --------------------

                        2018 USF Bulls football preview: Can Hooper and Bennett get up to speed to maintain productivity level at linebacker?
                        Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                        USF lost a ton of talent at linebacker with the loss of Jeffrey Reese, Mitchell Wright and Nigel Harris who started the last two seasons and three seasons for Reese. In the 4-3 scheme, returning starter Shelton Richardson will have to learn a "new" position as a traditional Will linebacker but it's not too far fetched from what he's been doing.

                        Mark Bennett, with two career tackles, gets the nod at Sam linebacker while Fred Hooper, who was a defensive end his first two seasons at USF, will try his hand at inside linebacker.

                        Hooper was a high school linebacker and running back but appeared to have outgrown the position once he tipped over the 260 pound range. Hooper, now 271 pounds, is making the switch back to his more natural position after struggling the last two seasons.

                        A look at USF’s linebacker situation:

                        Projected depth chart
                        WILL - #7 Shelton Richardson, Jr. :: #52 Matt Thompson, Rs Jr. :: #44 James Tucker, Rs So.
                        MIKE - #12 Fred Hooper, Jr :: #50 Derek O'Neill, RS So :: #56 John Jacobs, Fr.
                        SAM - #58 Mark Bennett, Rs So. :: #55 Rob Matthews, Rs So.

                        Expected starters:
                        #7 Shelton Richardson, Jr. | 6'1", 220lbs | 85 ovr, 86 spd, 96 acc, 82 tkl, 85 bsh, 79 zcv
                        #12 Fred Hooper, Jr. | 6'1", 274lbs | 74 ovr, 85 spd, 93 acc, 76 tkl, 65 bsh, 93 pur
                        #58 Mark Bennett, Rs So. | 6'1", 240lbs | 76 ovr, 82 spd, 97 acc, 74 tkl, 83 bsh, 71 zcv

                        Major storyline: Not a lot of experience at the position outside of Richardson and the ultimate wildcard here is safety Dan Johnson. Johnson played in the box a lot last season so if push comes to shove, don't be surprised if Johnson plays more of a linebacker role this year and maybe even moves into the position full time by year end.

                        ---------------------------

                        2018 USF Bulls football preview: Are Simmons and Johnson ready to become top corners after excelling last season?
                        Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                        The biggest question mark heading into last season was the corners, especially Brandon Simmons and Brett Johnson. At the time, they were unproven juniors being thrust into starting positions. Now, they're returning seniors with six interceptions between them.

                        The defensive backfield does lose seniors Antwan Shaw and Tavarious Bailey but add very interesting pieces in Trey Davis, a great athlete, and Chip Bryant, a sure tackler.

                        A look at USF’s defensive back situation:

                        Projected depth chart
                        CB - #17 Brett Johnson, Sr. :: #20 Bradley Bentley, Fr.
                        CB - #27 Brandon Simmons, Sr. :: #21 Michael Bush, Fr.
                        NICKEL - #3 Trey Davis, Fr. :: #26 Leonard Lilly, Rs Sr.
                        S - #2 Dan Johnson, Jr. :: #5 Chip Bryant, Fr. :: #23 Carl Rodriguez, So.
                        S - #26 Leonard Lilly, Rs Sr. :: #3 Trey Davis, Fr. :: #37 Mike Clark, Jr.

                        Expected starters:
                        CB #27 Brandon Simmons, Sr. | 5'10", 178lbs | 83 ovr, 92 spd, 91 acc, 87 mcv, 86 zcv
                        CB #17 Brett Johnson, Sr. | 6'0", 186lbs | 83 ovr, 90 spd, 88 acc, 90 mcv, 89 zcv
                        NICKEL #3 Trey Davis, Fr. | 6'1", 186lbs | 79 ovr, 89 spd, 89 acc, 87 mcv, 86 zcv
                        S #26 Leonard Lilly, Rs Sr. | 6'1", 192lbs | 87 ovr, 92 spd, 94 acc, 88 mcv, 92 zcv, 57 tkl
                        S #5 Chip Bryant, Fr. | 5'11", 180lbs | 77 ovr, 89 spd, 87 acc, 70 mcv, 75 zcv, 80 tkl
                        S #2 Dan Johnson, Jr. | 6'0", 206lbs | 85 ovr, 95 spd, 94 acc, 73 mcv, 74 zcv, 88 tkl

                        Major storyline: Expect a lot of playing time for Bryant due to his ability to tackle and Lilly's inability to do so effectively. Another thing to not rule out is Lilly moving into that nickel role and perhaps moving Davis to safety where he will rotate with Bryant next to Johnson. Either way, expect a lot of flexibility and rotations at safety.

                        Francois won't name starter heading into opener as Bulls schedule home-and-home with Rutgers
                        Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                        Don't expect the biggest question of the South Florida Bulls offseason to be answered any time soon. In a media availability, Bulls head coach Malcolm Francois told reporters that he will not name a starter before the team's season opener against Florida.

                        According to reports, redshirt freshman David Johnson and redshirt junior Steven McKenzie have been splitting first team reps throughout fall camp. McKenzie played last season when quarterback Grant Oliver went down with an injury and was mildly effective.

                        "I don't plan on naming a starter," said Francois, "I don't see what goes that does us, it's a close competition between all three guys."

                        The third man is redshirt junior Mario Greer who split first team reps with McKenzie in the spring but has since mainly ran with the second team offense. McKenzie came into camp as the favorite to win the job due to seniority but Johnson's meteoric rise since he arrived as a true freshman has swayed public opinion in the favor of the Georgia product.

                        The team also announced via their social media that the team's scheduled non-conference match-up with Texas in 2020 -- now a conference opponent -- has been replaced with a home-and-home series with Rutgers.

                        The Bulls will play at Rutgers in 2020 and host the Rutgers in 2022. The Bulls also finished up their 2020 non-conference schedule with home match-ups against Western Michigan and Ball State in addition to the scheduled road game against Florida State.

                          Top ranked QB Griffin commits to USC as Bulls now zero in on Harrell as QB for the class
                          Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

                          After not taking a quarterback in the 2018 recruiting class, USF is a very active participant in this cycle's quarterback class. The Bulls saw one of their top targets, quarterback Pete Griffin out of Deerfied Beech commit to the USC Trojans.

                          With Griffin off the board, USF is now focusing on quarterback Michael Harrell who they offered a scholarship a few weeks ago. Harrell is a six-foot-two, 213 pound four-star quarterback out of Miami, Florida.

                          While Griffin is viewed as a ready-made quarterback, Harrell is considered a project despite being the second ranked quarterback albeit in a down year at the position.

                          Despite up and down performance, freshman QB Johnson appears to be the guy for the Bulls
                          Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

                          David Johnson didn't light the world on fire in his debut against Florida, throwing for 247 yards and a mind-blogging interception into double-coverage.

                          But when you consider virtually no running game, several drops and some of the big hits he took as well as the constant pressure, it's clear that the Georgia product is not only the quarterback of the future but also the present.

                          While head coach Malcolm Francois refused to name a starter before -- or after -- the Florida game, his actions spoke louder than his words. Steven McKenzie nor Mario Greer never once warmed up during the game, even when Johnson threw the interception. This came to no one's surprise once Johnson completed his first ten passes and looked in command of the offense.

                          During this week's press availability, Francois once again declined to name a starter but all signs point to Johnson starting this week against Illinois.

                              Tough break losing out on Griffin. I feel your pain. I had 4-4* guy's all with Northern Colorado #2 all season only to watch them all sign with the other school.
