Francois, Bulls finally land their quarterback as cycle nears it end

The sixteenth ranked quarterback in the 2014 recruiting class, Grant Oliver out of Panthersville, Georgia, has committed to the USF Bulls. Oliver is one of four high school seniors to pledge their commitment to USF's 2014 recruiting class with three-star receiver Chris Walker, three-start tight end Mike Henry and three-star defensive tackle Dennis Martin also making the announcement official via their social media.

The announcement seemed coordinated and was expected with Oliver and the rest being considered a 'lock' for quite some time now. From a talent perspective, Walker is one of the Bulls more interesting prospects at six-foot-four with legit 4.46 speed clocked on the laser. Henry is also a decent athlete with a 4.70 40-yard dash but lacks the natural catching ability that you would from a pass catching tight end. Martin rounds out a defensive tackle that also features a similar player in three-star Ross Barron. Both players are one-gap type defensive tackles that are capable of stopping the run.

As far as Oliver, there is plenty to like. He possesses prototypical size at six-foot-two and 219 pounds and has a filled out frame which helps him generate some zip on his throw. The one caveat however is his lack of athleticism and just general avoidance to scrambling. The 2013 USF offense has largely found success as of late by using the quarterback as a runner and that's certainly not within Oliver's wheel house.

NCAA rules prohibit head coach Malcolm Francois from speaking on any recruits but he was on 560 WQAM talking about this year's recruiting cycle and he did make some news and hinted at a potential change in recruiting guidelines.

"I don't want guys that are committed but not really," said Francois, "We want to change the culture around here and I think that starts with how you meet someone. You only get one first impression and when I see guys being half in, half out, I don't respect it, honestly."

Francois could be hinting at former USF commits four-star receiver Tyrone Gibbons and defensive end Sheldon Corbett. Corbett's recruitment has been a whirlwind as he was once a USF commit, decommitted, appeared to be heading to Georgia Tech, then Troy, then back to USF and now....Mississippi State. Gibbons on the other hand appears to be heading to Ole Miss while three-star LB Alfred Jordan, once considered a USF lock, is now trending towards Cincinnati.

In speaking to some members of the staff, Francois wants to implement a "no visits" policy which will prohibit recruits from taking visits to other schools if they want to considered and seen by the coaching staff as being committed.

Miller and Lilly lock up spot in class as recruiting dead-period begins

USF might not be making a bowl game this holiday period but Santa did drop off a little present. The Bulls landed commitments from three-star CB Leonard Lilly and running back Richard Miller, the latter coming out of state from Alabama. USF must be commended for their work on Lilly, getting in the game late for the Miami cornerback and making up ground against Washington State and Texas, two Power 5 schools.

Miller is a much different back than the one USF got in four-star Leon Ward as he's not as explosive but has a college-ready frame at six-foot-two and 217 pounds. Lilly on the other hand is projected to perhaps play safety at the next level as he might not have the elite top end speed to play cornerback.

As the dead period approaches where coaches aren't allowed to come into contact with recruits, one player that Bulls fans can stop stressing about is four-star defensive end Sheldon Corbett. Corbett released his top three last week and it consisted of Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and Troy, bringing his recruitment to USF to an end.

The Bulls are also likely out on receiver Tyrone Gibbons, who officially decommitted last week and is expected to commit to Ole Miss coming out of the dead period. Cincinnati also appears to have flipped linebacker Alfred Jordan and cornerback Antwan Shaw appears to be headed to Florida Atlantic.

With a class of seventeen players already, USF might decide to call it a day because as of right now, they don't have an open roster spot. This could change with early departures such as pass rusher Aaron Lynch or potential transfers and in that case, guys like 3-star WR Heath Woods make sense or three-star linebacker Isaiah Clark.

Francois is trying to change the culture at USF but at what cost?

"I honestly thought someone was going to get hurt."

That's all someone within the USF football program could think about as head coach Malcolm Francois slammed his fist right into a wooden locker, just inches away from the head of freshman quarterback Mike White. When staffers tried to pull Francois aside, he kept charging back towards the players, hurling insults at them.

"I've never seen a coach behave that way before, say some of the things he was saying. It was alarming but yet, when you look back at it, not surprising."

The setting was half-time of the East Carolina vs. South Florida game. USF was trying to salvage the first half of their season and had plenty of high school recruits in the stand, all of which Francois personally spoke to before the game after having them over at his house on Friday night. USF had ended a three-game losing streak on the road against Connecticut in White's first career start and the stage was set. USF would pull off the upset against East Carolina, impress some recruits, get some commitments and then turn their season around. Instead, White threw two interceptions in one quarter as the Bulls found themselves trailing 31-14 at halftime after East Carolina scored a touchdown that was thrown by a punter.

Francois laid into the defensive players as they came off the field and then he went after some of the coaching staff before setting his focus towards his quarterback. Bobby Eveld had grown used to his profane laced rants but for the freshman White, this was something different.

"He looked terrified," says an unnamed USF player, "Bobby [Eveld], he get on his *** everyday and Steven [Bench] too but for White, it was like he ain't the star freshman quarterback anymore, he's not part of the 'untouchables'. You in the gutter with us now and he's gonna treat you like [expletive] if you ain't [producing]."

Francois' tirade at halftime and during the infamous press conference weren't isolated incidents. After speaking with numerous members of the support staff, coaching staff and players, Francois' player's coach personality has an off-switch. According to several people within the football program, Francois would frequently go after quarterback Eveld, Bench and White in practice and on the sideline in games. Francois would go as far as showing their interceptions multiple times during team meetings with seemingly no purpose other than to embarrass them. Eveld, a senior, took the brunt of it after throwing ten interceptions to just his first two touchdowns. When the team came back on campus after the team's loss, Eveld's interception were played on a loop on all of the televisions within the athletic center for the next week.

Eveld wasn't the only object of Francois' scorn. He'd get after players that he felt were under-performing, threatening to send them back to their "momma's section-8 [expletive] apartment".

"He'd say [things] like 'if you're not producing, you're no use to me," remembers a player.

Another player remembers a time when Francois approached a struggling defensive back and told him that Francois would call the cops and sprinkle some crack on him so Francois would be able to kick him off the team. The same player also described an instance where Francois knock a smoothie out of a player's hand and said: "only winners get to eat".

Despite all of this, USF improved from a 3-9 season in 2012 to win five games in 2013, coming within a fourth quarter debacle of beating rival UCF and going bowling. Since the East Carolina lost, USF went 3-2 with an overtime loss and the aforementioned loss to UCF. Part of that was strength of scheduling as two of their three wins came against teams with sub .500 records but apart of it, according to some within the program, was Francois changing the culture.

"He lights you up," says a player, "But he'll be the first one celebrating with you, he'll gas you up, get you going. He's a good coach but I just think his temper be getting to him."

His passion is something that several recruits in USF's 42nd ranked recruiting class for 2014 have highlighted in their interviews. Francois' passion might just be what USF needs to turn the football program back to it's glory days of when Francois was both a player and a coach in the early 2000s under head coach Jim Leavitt. But considering that allegations of striking a player is what ended Leavitt's tenure at USF, one must wonder if Francois' means will ever get to justify the ends.

A petition to fire head coach Malcolm Francois

It was just four years ago that USF president Judy Genshaft met with then USF football head-coach Jim Leavitt after an investigation into allegations that Leavitt hit a player. USF President Judy Genshaft and athletic director Doug Woolard asked him to admit to allegations he had struck a player and explain his actions as a momentary loss of control.

But Leavitt refused to doing anything wrong and soon after, the only coach that USF fans and players ever knew was fired. Last week, similar allegations regarding gross misconduct by current USF head coach Malcolm Francois, actions that cannot be categorized as anything other than bullying, harassment and even mental torture of his players. Since those allegations have came out, the school has refused to comment and neither has coach Francois.

At the end of the day, Francois is a faculty member. Imagine that a Biology teacher slapping a drink out of student's hand because they failed a test and yelling at them that "eating is for losers".

USF must act now and fire Francois before it's too late.
