LB Reed makes return to starting lineup as initial depth chart released
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

The South Florida Bulls have released the official depth chart ahead of the Alabama game, it's first of the season.

Junior John Reed, who started as a true freshman and recorded 43 tackles, is back as a starter following the draft departure of Montrell Jennings. Reed lost his starting job last season to two true freshman and was part of a rotation of backups where he recorded 13 tackles with an interception.

Reed is now up to 240 pounds -- gaining almost twenty pounds in a calendar year -- in an effort to be more stout against the run. Reed played off the line of scrimmage as a freshman but will be asked to play more at the line of scrimmage this season as Jennings was used as the fourth man on the line plenty of time.

Other notable listed starters are true freshman receivers Jason Barbour and Darius Downs. Along with Joel Bass, the former five-stars give Bulls quite a physical presence at the position with all three of them being 6'2" and taller and all well over 200 pounds.

Perhaps the most telling part of the depth chart was the secondary. Last season, it was two safeties listed as the team's nickel cornerback but this year, there were more traditional corners. While the front six is expected to be the same scheme wise, USF does seem to be adapting its secondary to account for the lost of Edgar Thompson and instead play to their strength in the secondary which is a ton of experience at corner.

Run of the Bulls ‣ USF Football News
Andrew Lake -- 247 Sports Staff Writer

        ‣ Boise State game to be broadcasted on The Bulls Network

When the USF Bulls and Boise State Broncos face off in a few weeks, it won't be on FOX or ESPN or CBS or NBC. It'll be available exclusively on The Bulls Network (TBN), the digital media network that is owned by the school's athletic program.

The game will be streamed on both Apple TV and Hulu Live, which are currently the only streaming services which offer The Bulls Network. Next year's game against San Jose will also be streamed on TBN as well as the 2026 matchup against Florida Atlantic.

        ‣ Son of Bulls head coach Francois receives Crystal Balls to Ole Miss

Three-star cornerback Pierre Francois has received several 247 Sports Crystal Balls to Ole Miss from various recruiting insiders, both covering Ole Miss and Maryland.

If the name sounds familiar, it should. Francois is the younger brother of Bulls receiver Malcolm Francois Jr. and the son of head coach Malcolm Francois Sr.

A five-foot-nine cornerback, Francois doesn't fit the build of most of USF's corners on their roster. The team has typically gone after corners six-feet and up and Francois is a generous 5'9". The 27th ranked cornerback according to 247Sports, Francois does have an offer from USF and it remains to be seen if that relationship continues to splinter.

Maryland, who also recruited Francois Jr., is also in the running for his services.

The elder Francois son hasn't had a ton of success at USF, at least not on defense. Francois Jr. struggled to get on the field at safety, causing a positional switch to receiver where he is now, once again, a backup.

USF did also offer 2026 prospect J.J. Francois who is the youngest of the three brothers. J.J. is a junior quarterback at Carrollwood High School although he projects to be a skill position player at the next level. Albeit the youngest, he is the biggest of the trio and is currently at listed at six-foot-two and 219 pounds on the team's HUDL roster.

Bulls Open 2024 Season with OT Thriller Win vs. Alabama
It wasn't even twelve months ago that Philip Griffin had the ball on the goal-line and failed to get the ball across to beat the USF Bulls. He'd get his revenge later on during bowl season. Riley Hall will need to wait for his opportunity once more.

Hall's pass into the endzone fell incomplete in overtime as Malcolm Francois' gamble paid off in the Bulls 43-41 win over #1 Alabama on Saturday night.

After scoring on the first drive of overtime, Francois chose to go for two instead of kicking the field goal and James Pittman was able to score on back to back plays using his legs. It was a bit of redemption for the quarterback whose fourth quarter interception helped set up Alabama's game tying field goal with 47 seconds left.

The win extended USF's home-game winning streak to 30. Since the 2000s, only Boise State, USC and Oklahoma have reached that mark.

Bulls Survive a Thrilling 34-31 Game Against Louisville
The South Florida Bulls certainly have a flair for the dramatics and their opponents have an allergy to scoring from the one-yard line.

In back to back weeks, USF made goal-line stands, this time in regulation against Louisville to hold off the Cardinals and complete the 34-31 comeback victory on Saturday.

After scoring 22 unanswered points following a quarterback switch to Mike McFarland from the struggling James Pittman, USF found themselves up 34-23 with 3:39 left in the game.

The game appeared won but Louisville refused to go down, scoring with 1:45 left in the game and converting on the two-point conversion. They failed to recover the onside kick but a three-and-out by the Bulls offense gave Louisville one more chance.

The Cardinals appeared to be at least heading into overtime as they cross the 40-yard line with more than fifteen seconds left in the game. On the ensuing play, backup quarterback Robert Brock completed a pass to the USF two-yard line before a facemask penalty on the tackle placed the ball on the one-yard line.

With no timeouts left, Louisville was just one-yard from the upset victory, only for Brock to be sacked and for time to run out.

Run of the Bulls ‣ USF Football News
Andrew Lake -- 247 Sports Staff Writer

            ‣ Junior HB Mitchell taking 'leave of absence' from team

USF head coach Malcolm Francois announced to the media on Wednesday that junior running back Gerald Mitchell is taking a leave of absence from the team. It is unclear if the former five-star running backs is still enrolled in classes.

Mitchell twice left the game last week with apparent injuries and upon the team's return from Louisville, he posted some disturbing videos of himself on social media that were quickly taken down. In the video, Mitchell appears to be emotional and crying while talking about his injury history.

"My (expletive) shoulder is messed up, all my (expletive) fingers is jacked up, I can't even get up in the morning too fast, my brain is....it ain't the same."

Mitchell has since deactivated his social media.

As a freshman, Mitchell rushed for 526 yards and six touchdowns. Injuries limited his play last season but still averaged 75.5 yards per game. He was slated to be the team's top back this season before an injury in warm-ups kept him out of the Alabama game before rushing for 46 yards last week.

            ‣ Francois downplays benching of Pittman

According to head coach Malcolm Francois, there is no QB controversy brewing in Tampa.

After James Pittman threw six interceptions in seven quarters, the redshirt senior was benched in favor of Mike McFarland. In just one quarter of action, McFarland threw two touchdowns, completed 87 percent of his passes and threw for 115 yards. That's pretty good.

Francois remained adamant, however, that it was a situational decision.

"James (Pittman) is our guy," said Francois, "The situation called for Mike (McFarland) to help us out, he's got a bit of stronger arm and in the elements with the rain and how the corners were playing our routes, I went with him. If you have a 6'6" receiver and you have two corners and one is 6'2" and the other is 5'9", you might want to play the 6'2" guy. It doesn't mean you don't trust the other guy, it was just a better matchup for that specific day against that specific team."

Pittman is expected to start this week against Oklahoma.

            ‣ Bass' breakout season slowed down with hip injury

USF's leading receiver Joel Bass will not be on the field this week as he deals with an hip pointer injury.

The junior receiver leads the team with 12 receptions for 170 yards and two touchdowns. He's already surpassed his TD total from last season and needs just four catches to match his receptions.

While USF will certainly miss Bass as he is expected to miss a few weeks with this injury, there are plenty of talented receivers on the roster. Five-star freshmen Darius Downs and Jason Barbour have flashed while Malcolm Francois Jr. is already up to 103 yards on the season. Ryan Wagner, an overlooked four-star from the last class, also has eight catches on the year.

Bulls in prime position to land nation's top player in California's Jacobs
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The last time the USF Bulls signed the number one recruit in the country, said player would go on to rewrite the record books. It's only fitting that following William Stone's exodus to the NFL, the Bulls are once more in the running to land the nation's crown jewel.

Five-star athlete Jay Jacobs out of Norwalk, CA recently did an interview where he listed USF and Washington as the two schools recruiting him the hardest, in line with the top ten he released at the beginning of the summer which included USF, Washington, UNLV, Utah, USC, UCLA, California, Stanford, UCLA and Oregon.

In the interview, Jacobs had a lot of good things to say about the Bulls offense and revealed that they prefer him at receiver while some other schools have primarily recruited him at cornerback.

A big domino might be the decision of four-star quarterback Jed White. White, a long time Miami commit, is the lone quarterback that the Bulls have heavily pursued in this cycle. If they can get him to flip from Miami, it'll make landing the likes of Jacobs and five-star ATH/RB George Ostrander a lot easier.

Bulls Are Lucky To Escape Norman With a 19-13 Win
While offensive players such as Troy Henry, Zac White and William Stone have been the poster child of the USF Bulls' recent run of success, it's their defense that has propelled them into a streak of ten win seasons.

They reminded the country of that on Saturday, holding the Sooners offense to just thirteen points, forcing a safety and an interception in the fourth quarter as the Bulls escaped Norman with a 19-13 win.

Oklahoma lost running back Curtis Kendrick to an injury early in the game and their running game was never able to get going with just 60 team rushing yards. In just his second career start, Nathan Woods had to carry the bulk of the Sooners offense. He threw for 294 yards and touchdown but getting sacked in his own endzone and throwing an interception in the fourth quarter ultimately led to the Sooners demise.

Once armed with abundance of riches at running back, Bulls now turning to walk-on tryouts
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

Back in the spring of 2023, USF had three five-star running backs milling about the Lee Roy Selmon Athletic Complex. The trio -- Gerald Mitchell, David Fuller and Derrick Green -- were tasked with replacing yet another five-star in Troy Henry who had just won the Heisman. Three classes in four years of landing at least one five-star running back had the team in perfect position to be dominant at the position for years to come.

On Sunday, a mass email went out of the student body at the University of South Florida promoting an open tryout for walk-ons, particularly running backs.

"We need bodies right now at running back," said head coach Malcolm Francois, who revealed to the media that Green's back injury in the Oklahoma game will sideline him for a 'significant' amount of time.

This came just hours after reports surfaced that Mitchell, who took a leave of absence due to his own injury history, was no longer enrolled in classes at USF. Francois opted not to comment on the situation but one thing is clear, only two scholarship running backs in Fuller and John Dixon were available by the end of the Oklahoma game. Even senior walk-on running back Marcus Figuereo had one carry for four yards as Dixon and Fuller took a breather.

The Bulls had previously planned on redshirting freshman Jason Finley, a former four-star, but it's an all hands on deck type of environment in Tampa right now at running back.

Fuller also figures to receive a bigger workload. He's had some success this season after missing out on most of last season with injury issues of his own. He's averaging 6.3 yards per carry and has rushed for 244 yards.

Texas A&M eyeing potential Big 12 reunion as TV rights negotiations begin
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

Texas A&M left the Big 12 kicking and screaming, seemingly burning bridges at every which ways as it forced itself off the apparent sinking ship of the Big 12 into the college football haven that is the SEC. It seems as if over a decade later, [s]time[/s] money is healing all wounds.

According to an ESPN report, Texas A&M and Big 12 officials have began preliminary discussions that could see the former member return to the conference. The news coincidences with ongoing TV rights negotiations that could see the conference flip go completely exclusive with ESPN. The package will run through the 2024-25 school year. ABC/ESPN and Fox share the league's football inventory, while ABC/ESPN is the exclusive provider for Big 12 men's basketball.

After ESPN bought out the conference's football championship game rights four years ago, the groundwork has been made for a Big 12 Network on ESPN, aligning the conference's TV rights deal with the pre-existing Longhorn Network which is already on ESPN.

The Longhorn Network had a lot to do with Texas A&M's decision to leave the Big 12 back in 2011. While it managed to escape the shadow of Texas, it's since had varying success since joining the SEC. Eddie Gran has turned the program around following a three-year period where the Aggies went 18-20. Since then, the team has won at least nine games under Gran except for one season and won a national championship in 2022. However, the Aggies have failed to established themselves -- and their brand -- as one of the mainstays in the SEC. Instead, they're still viewed largely as outsiders within SEC circles.

What does this mean for the USF Bulls, who have thoroughly dominated the conference since joining it? It's complicated. A&M would instantly become one of the better teams in the conference despite a four-win season last year. They would also likely join the South division as the 7th member and it remains to be seen if the Big 12 would then push for a fourteenth team. Either way, it would improve the Bulls strength of schedule and the overall prestige of the Big 12 which has taken a hit in recent years due to poor play from the bottom half of the conference.

The complicated part is where does that put USF into the pecking order of the Big 12? Football wise, they've been the premier program but a lackluster men's basketball program that is on the brink of being dropped and historical value will put them well below the likes of Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The program has also been pushing their digital network with this week's Boise State game set to be the first broadcasted game on the network. Will USF get a big enough seat at the negotiations table to keep their own separate digital (for now) network with the ability to broadcast games?

The same issue Texas A&M had in the SEC in terms of being an outsider, USF could find itself in the same place.

Bulls Outlast Upset Minded Boise State in Overtime
There might not be a better winless football team in all of the land. Boise State will have to resign itself to accept that superlative after a thriller in Tampa.

Mike McFarland was able to atone for his pick six with 42 seconds left in the game, leading the South Florida Bulls on a game-tying drive to end regulation before David Fuller did the heavy lifting in overtime to keep the Bulls home winning streak alive in the 52-21 overtime win over the Broncos.

After Boise State had just tied the game after converting on a 4th-and-12, the offense wouldn't need to come on the field as McFarland's pass was intercepted for an interception. Instead of taking a knee and running the clock out for an eventual game winner, Justin Allen chose to take the easy six points.

McFarland had replaced the struggling James Pittman who could only muster up six points of offense in an half. Francois' decision would turn out wise in the end as McFarland was able to go nearly the length of the field in thirty seconds, ending with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Sam Peterson with five seconds left in the game to force overtime.

USF would score first in overtime and opt to kick an extra point, trusting their defense only for the Broncos to score on their very first play. After Boise State scored once more, David Fuller took over the game with back-to-back runs to score on a 19-yard run. Francois decided to be aggressive this time and kept his offense on the field for the two point conversion, bringing in Pittman at quarterback as a running threat.

The Boise State defense stayed home, allowing Pittman to hand the ball off to Fuller for the game-winner.

The win preserved the Bulls now 31-game home-winning streak.

Hulu, Apple TV's partnership with The Bulls Network off to promising start
Norm Porter -- The Tampa Bay Times Business Columnist

The USF Bulls first game to air exclusively on a streaming outlet drew a decent-sized audience-- to say the least -- on Saturday — one in line with Big 12 games aired on FOX.

The matchup between the Boise State Broncos and USF Bulls drew an average audience of 4.1 million viewers on Apple TV and Hulu Live when combined.

The network also says 8.2 million people watched at least some portion of the game on Hulu and Apple TV. The 4.1 million "average minute audience" — the closest streaming analog to Nielsen ratings for traditional TV — is the highest ever for the digital entity.

By comparison, the Citrus Bowl this past January drew 4.78 million viewers and the Cotton Bowl, which USF participated in, drew 5.77 million.

All of the success cannot be attribute to sole The Bulls Network. While ratings and viewership for their other live programming content such as the football program's spring scrimmages have hovered around one million viewers before, the addition of Hulu and Apple TV is certainly a factor in the massive bump that they received.

Oklahoma has previously aired some of it's non-conference games on pay-per-view while Texas has it's own Longhorn Network which is available through ESPN. The Bulls Network's success on Saturday is likely just yet another revenue stream that will try to put the Bulls on par fiscally with some of the blue bloods of college football.

Bye Week Report: The State of Bulls
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

It seemed too good to be true that in a post Michael Harrell landscape that the USF Bulls would have a steady quarterback and no controversy at the position.

Despite head coach Malcolm Francois refusing to comment on the matter during the post-game press conference, it's pretty evident following two separate benching that James Pittman is not the unequivocal leader of the offense and that Mike McFarland might just be back in the picture.

With a bye week in hand, the Bulls will have plenty of time to figure out who will be under center for their next game against West Virginia.

                  Best player through weeks 1-5:
Junior WR Joel Bass was on pace to be the obvious answer but injuries have caused him to miss the last two games. David Fuller's performance in the team's past three outings get him the nod, rushing for over 100 yards in each games and sitting pretty with a 6.5 yards per carry and 106 yards per game. He also scored the game-winner against Boise State so bonus points for the former five-star.

                  Worst player through weeks 1-5:
The lack of a pass rush is a concern, a big one especially with less than elite play in the defensive backfield so far this season. Three players are currently tied for the lead with two sacks in Kelvin Davis, Daniel Elliott and Dale Bolen. After having two double-digit sack artists last season, it was always going to be a tough task to replace them but there's been absolutely no pass rush at times. The entire defensive line, specifically the ends, get this dishonor.

                  Most Impressive game so far:
                  W 43-41 OT vs. #2 Alabama

The game never should have went into overtime and if things fall just right, the Bulls probably score on their second to last offensive possession instead of turning the ball over and this becomes a potential two-score game. Alabama is so good that even with a loss, they're ranked number two in the country, ahead of the team that beat them.

The Bulls got so many big time contributions from players playing in their first ever college game or first college start. Ryan Wagner had six catches, Darius Downs had a touchdown and Jason Barbour went for 96 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown. It might be the best win in all of college football.

                  Least Impressive game so far:
                  W 34-31 at Louisville

Despite their record, Boise State is a talented team that should turn things around after having a very tough non-conference schedule. Louisville, on the other hand, lost by 23 to Miami University (the one in Ohio) and recently lost by ten points to Duke. Louisville doesn't appear to be a very good football team and they scored 31 points on the Bulls defense with their backup quarterback.

                  Former Bulls Report:
QB Eugene Shaw, Central Michigan - Shaw is averaging an impressive 287.7 yards per game and nine touchdowns to just three interceptions. There's room for improvement with his 53.6 completion percentage but he's certainly proven that he's a capable college quarterback. He was a miss by the scouting department in terms of being a P5 level quarterback but he has found a home in Michigan. The Chippawas aren't very good and might not make a bowl but Shaw could potentially play himself into a Senior Bowl invite.

QB Jeremy Thomas, Georgia Southern - After not being able to win the starting job last season, Thomas' got injured in the team's 28-13 win in the opener, missed the Army game but has since played well, throwing six touchdowns and no interceptions. Georgia State is 3-1 with a win over Oklahoma State as they head into their conference play. Things are looking up for Thomas, who has his weight under control now and is listed at 219 pounds after being over 240 pounds at USF.

WR Benji Bright, Oklahoma - Just one catch for the former Bull, which ironically was against USF. He still has two years of eligibility left and should be able to turn his career around, he's talented enough to do so.

Tampa is Buzzing Following a 48-23 Win Over West Virginia
After dealing with a couple of thrillers and nail bitters, it was a welcomed change of pace for Bulls fans as they sat back and watched their team dominate the competition.

South Florida ran away with a 48-23 victory over West Virginia on Saturday, scoring 28 points in the first half as the Bulls extended their home winning streak to 32 games.

Quarterbacks James Pittman and Mike McFarland rotated series, with McFarland getting the start until the third series resulted in McFarland throwing a 39-yard touchdown pass to Joel Bass. McFarland seemingly won the starting QB spot with five touchdown passes and just three incompletions. He would stay in the game until the end of the third quarter when he was relieved by redshirt freshman Nick Williams.

Williams, widely viewed as the heir apparent at the position, did not disappoint. He threw for 53 yards and did not throw an incompletion. True freshman Jason Finley also got to get in the game with 69 yards rushing in his first college game as the Bulls emptied the bench.

Bulls first recruiting visit weekend not an overwhelming success
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

It has become the norm that when recruits visit USF's ever changing, ever developing campus in the heart of Tampa Bay, that they fall in love with the program. By the time they reach the customary Sunday dinner at head coach Malcolm Francois' waterfront property, the messaging has gone out on their social media page that they're committed.

USF held it's first share of recruiting visits this past weekend with five players -- 4-star tight end Blake Grisby and defensive end Mike Atkins along with three-star linebacker Cory Harrison, safety Ralph Gray and offensive guard Chris Simpson -- and while all had positive things to say about the Bulls, none committed.

Grisby, probably the most talented of the bunch, is expected to take visits to Auburn, Florida and Florida State before the end of the season. The Bulls would have loved for him to never step foot on those campuses. They're in "a really good spot" with defensive end Mike Atkins according to someone within the program, despite offering Georgia four-star defensive end Jim Horner over the weekend.

The other offer that went out this weekend was to three-star outside linebacker Kenny Frye who is originally from Whitehall, PA and is currently playing for IMG Academy in nearby Bradenton.

The offers likely coincided with four-star receiver Eric Sellers releasing a top-two of Florida and UCF and three-star fullback Matt Kennedy not having USF in his newly updated top two.

The next big recruiting weekend is a few weeks away when the Bulls host the Texas Longhorns. A few top players, including Jay Jacobs and George Ostrander, are expected to be in attendance for the homecoming affair.

Fighting Irish Cannot Close Out Undefeated USF, Lose 38-33
Notre Dame appeared to be on the brink of completing one of the greatest comebacks in recent college football history as Jermaine Young caught his second touchdown in 20 seconds.

And then the faithful yellow flag hit the green grass, ending all hopes and giving USF a 38-33 win over Notre Dame on Saturday night in what turned out to be an epic game.

As John Dixon crossed the goal-line to give USF a two-possession lead with 1:01 left in the game, the game appeared to no longer be in the balance. Even after the Fighting Irish scored on the ensuing possession, the odds weren't in their favor with just 20 seconds left in the game.

The Irish were able to recover the onside kick after true freshman Darius Downs failed to get firm control of the ball. After a completion got them within Hail Mary range with seven seconds left in the game, John Daniels was able to connect with Andy Henley on the one-yard line with one seconds left in the game.

After Notre Dame used it's final timeout, USF did the same, changing their defense once they saw the alignment. Young, who had just beaten Jake Lott 19 seconds prior for a touchdown, was able to get separation once more and caught the wide open touchdown in the back of the endzone.

A flag was thrown on the play. After much deliberation, it was revealed that Young had stepped out of bounds before catching the pass, resulting in an illegal touching call and the end of the game.

It was miraculous win for USF who started the game down 17-0 and just when their offense got going, quarterback Mike McFarland left the game with a concussion. James Pittman, who began the season as a starter, did more than fine in his absence. He completed 7 of 8 passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns.

USF, Notre Dame extend football series through 2035
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

After arguably the best game of the season, USF's athletic director Michael Kelly took to twitter to announce that the Bulls and Irish have agreed to a five-game series.

With USF's non-conference schedule booked until 2028, the first match up of the renewed series will be in Tampa in 2028 and 2035. The Bulls will then travel to Notre Dame in 2030 and 2034 with a neutral site game in 2032. Part of the agreement, reportedly, is that the home games for the Bulls will be broadcasted on The Bulls Network. The neutral site game is expected to be in New York.

Bulls land commitments from four-star DE Mike Atkins, three-star S Ralph Gray
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Local three-star prospect Ralph Gray and four-star south Florida defensive end Mike Atkins have both committed to the University of South Florida.

Atkins, who was received heavily by Texas, is the 22nd ranked defensive end in the nation and has played in a similar front as the Bulls currently leverage with three down lineman. There is certainly room to grow for Atkins who could continue to fill out his six-foot-five frame and end up in the 260 range weight wise.

For Gray, he's a level or two below the caliber of players that USF has recently gone after in the secondary. He's a versatile defensive back that could play corner if required to but his physical tools are limited and it'll be a wait and see approach to determine if he can play in the Bulls defense. He's not quite fast enough to play the deep safety role and not stout enough against the run to play either Rover or strong safety. A switch to corner might be his best bet to get and stay on the field.

In less than welcoming news, USF target Stan Dean, a four-star running back out of Texas, committed to South Carolina. USF currently has the 74th ranked recruiting class in the country with just three commitments to date.

The ranking should improve, especially if the Bulls are able to land their QB of the class which is looking more and more probable. Miami landed a commitment from four-star quarterback Joey Ross out of nearby Lakeland. The former Gators commit's commitment likely signals that the tea leaves have been correct and that quarterback Jed White, the sixth ranked QB in the country and the top ranked quarterback in the state of Florida, is likely headed to USF.

Undefeated USF Protects Home Turf as They Beat Kansas State 24-13
USF'S defense has had a down year, allowing over 300 yards per game through the air and struggling to keep teams from scoring a boatload of points.

On Saturday, USF's defense, despite allowing nearly 400 yards passing, held Kansas State to just thirteen points and forced three turnovers in the 24-13 win.

Mike McFarland, returning from a concussion, threw for a career high 422 yards and three touchdowns, completing 79 percent of his passes in what might be the best performance of his career. He did this despite being sacked nine times by a Kansas State defense that was relentless with the pass rush.

Bulls lose out on 5-star ATH Ostrander but land QB in White
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

With College GameDay heading into Tampa, it's been a hectic week for the South Florida Bulls as they get ready to host both the Texas Longhorns and a bevy of recruits on Homecoming Weekend. USF was able to flip 4-star quarterback Jed White, land a commitment from 4-star tight end Nick Thompson but ultimately lost out on five-star George Ostrander.

The week got off to an eventful start when on Monday, White announced his decommitment from the University of Miami, a move that was expected. What was not expected was for a few hours later, the top ranked player in the state of Florida announced their commitment to the University of Minnesota, giving the Gophers the #1 ranked class in the country and two five-stars.

George Ostrander was expected to be in Tampa this weekend but never made the trip. On Tuesday, Thompson announced his commitment and by Thursday, White also revealed that he will be committing to the Bulls and intends to be on campus for the Texas game.

White is a six-foot-five quarterback that already has a pro frame at 239 pounds with not a ton of bad weight. Simply put, the Bulls may have landed some similarly ranked quarterbacks but never quite an athlete that White. True freshman Jay Jackson has impressed the coaching staff on the scout team with his speed but White, despite having thirty pounds on him, blows his testing numbers out of the water. There's work to be done with his accuracy but his commitment should help jump start what has been a slow cycle for the Bulls. White has already taken a vocal approach to being a leader of the class, commenting underneath Ostrander's announcement "pick a side and stay there"

One of White's weapons at USF will be tight end Nick Thompson although he may be more of a protector than a receiver. A similar build to Vincent Everett in last cycle's class, Thompson is more H-back however than Everett. It doesn't hurt that the Bulls also got to keep him from UCF who really wanted the local product.

With Ostrander off the board, the margin of error for the Bulls has increasingly tightened for the running back position, where they were recruiting him. Stan Dean committed to South Carolina and since then, the Bulls have yet to zero in on a running back yet. They've recently offered Florida receiver Bradley Wilkinson, who some schools like at running back, and Texas running back Ronnie Smith but both are mid-tier three-star players.
