Bulls land two commitments following FSU win as recruiting cycle picks up

USF head coach Malcolm Francois' decision to keep trying to score already up several points in the fourth quarter against Florida State might be a debate topic for sports talk radio but it's been nothing but positive fodder for the Bulls on the recruiting trail.

USF landed it's first two commitments of the 2016 recruiting cycle with JUCO defensive tackle Anton Tate and three-star defensive tackle Jamey Little. Little and Tate are very comparable with both players being under six-feet and could potentially play as a five-technique in the Bulls odd-man fronts.

While Tate and Little fill a need at defensive tackle with just two underclassmen at the position currently on the roster, the Bulls are certainly making a lot of noise elsewhere as else.

The team has secured a visit for later in the season with five-star athlete Zac White out of Jesup, Georgia who projects to be a receiver or defensive back at the next level. The Bulls are also in on four-star athlete Franklin Sapp and four-star wide receiver Corey Sharp with all three of them being out of Georgia.

The Bulls will be hosting a few players this weekend in three-star linebacker Derek O'Neill, two-star offensive guards Quinton Payne and Brian Brown along with four star receiver Matt Hill and three-star receiver Sean Massey.

Massey might be the most interesting prospect out of all the visiting recruits, coming out of nearby Zephyrhills. Massey has been clocked on the laser at 4.38 on the forty and could be part of a loaded class at receiver.

USF picks up three more commitments as five-star safety Johnson set to visit next week

USF received three more commitments over the weekend in the form of three-star ATH Fred Hooper (Naples, FL), three-star offensive guard Quinton Payne (Tampa, FL) and two-star offensive guard Brian Brown (Bonita Springs, FL).

After signing seven offensive linemen in the last class, the additions of Payne and Brown likely wrap up USF's recruiting in that department. Brown is a an undersized interior lineman at six-feet and 309 pounds that could potentially move to center while Payne's frame at six-foot-six and 330 pounds makes him a potential guard or tackle. The flexibility of both players allow the coaching staff to feel confident that they do not need to add to the position.

Speaking of flexibility, Hooper might be the most intriguing prospect of this cycle. Hooper runs a 4.56 forty and plays running back for his high school team at six-foot-one and 264 pounds, the only position he's ever played. Hooper has quite literally outgrown the position and projects to be more of a linebacker at the college level although according to Hooper, he's been promised a "look at running back".

With two senior starters at inside linebacker, linebacker is a big need for the Bulls and it's been shown. Along with Hooper, USF has crystal balls for three-star OLBs Shelton Richardson (Tampa, FL) and Derek O'Neill (Miami, FL) and two-star OLBs Rob Matthews (Zephyrhills, FL) and JUCO prospect Matt Thompson. Throw in their late push for four-star inside linebacker Mark Bennett out of Hallandale and it might be a loaded class at linebacker.

USF is also trying to make some movement on five-star safety Dan Johnson out of Alpharetta, Georgia as they continue to recruit the Peach State. Johnson is not your standard five-star safety as both of his parents are Air Force veterans and both his siblings attend Troy University. Those two aforementioned schools make up his top five along with Clemson, USF and Florida State.

It's going to be tough to dethrone Air Force but they were able to get him to take a visit to Tampa next weekend. On campus will also be four-star running Brian Reynolds and LBs Matthews and Thompson.

In other news, the team offered three-star QB Brandon Tidwell out of Douglasville, Georgia. The team was previously recruiting three-star QB Dustin Brown but at some point, contact stopped once the team wasn't ready to accept a commitment from him and he instead committed to UMass.

Bulls pick up first four-star of 2016 class in Mississippi RB Reynolds

Four-star RB Brian Reynolds (Crystal Springs, MS) and two star OLBs Rob Matthews (Zephyrhills, FL) and Matt Thompson (JUCO, FL) have committed to the South Florida Bulls. The commitments bring the Bulls class size to eight as they have several other big time players remaining on their board.

Matthews and Thompson held offers from the likes of Florida Atlantic and UAB among other while Reynolds, the class' first four-star, held offers from Duke, Kansas State, Cincinnati and LSU.

Matthews and Thompson are very different linebackers. Matthew is listed at 6'2" and 214 pounds and is more of an off ball linebacker having played safety as a sophomore and still participating in several 7-on-7 camps this past summer as a defensive back. He's a step too slow to play safety with a clocked 4.86 safety but he brings the time of speed that the Bulls have coveted in linebackers in recent years. Thompson, who will be a sophomore next season, brings more even speed to the table (4.72 40-time) but at a bigger size at 6'6" and 226 pounds with the raw skill set to be perhaps be a pass rusher down the line.

Reynolds is not only the team's first four-star but also the first non-Florida kid to commit to the Bulls this cycle. Reynolds is a big back at six foot and 225 pounds with a clocked 4.54 time. He's not as physical as a Richard Miller or as quick as Leon Ward but he's another downhill runner that doesn't simply realize on his size.

The commitments come just a week before USF will be having arguably it's biggest recruiting event of the year as during homecoming, the team will be hosting several recruits such as four-star WRs Corey Sharp and Jay Stevens, five-star athlete Zac White, four-star athlete Franklin Sapp, four-star defensive tackle Rian Williamsthree-star linebacker Shelton Richardson and two-star safety Mike Clark.

USF is hopeful that a wave of commitments might help them build some momentum to land five-star safety Dan Johnson, who visited USF last weekend but is going to be on campus with the Air Force Academy on commit watch.

Bulls big recruiting weekend pays off as record number eight players commit over weekend

USF head coach Malcolm Francois has already recorded two of the best recruiting classes in school history in his first two seasons. This weekend, Francois and his staff received eight commitments over the course of 72 hours to have the nation's #2 recruiting class.

Four-star receivers Corey Sharp, Matt Hill and Jay Stevens, four star linebacker Mark Bennett, four-star athlete Franklin Sapp, three-star linebackers Shelton Richardson and Derek O'Neill along with two star safety Mike Clark all committed to USF.

Starting with the receivers, they are all similar receivers in the six-foot range with developed skills that don't have elite top end speed with Stevens and Hill having clocked 40s in the 4.5 range while Sharp is a bit more explosive with a 4.46 forty. Stevens is the most polished of the three and likely could contribute next season right away.

Bennett is a plug and play candidate due to his athleticism and ability to cover slot receivers and tight ends. For Sapp, who will likely play defensive back at the next level, speed is the name of the game. He runs a 4.36 forty and is one of the fastest players in the state of Florida. He is a finesse player and doesn't have much experience at defensive back so receiver is not completely out of the picture with Sapp but with so many already signed in the class, the team could better utilize him elsewhere.

Even with sixteen players committed, USF is not done. The team hosted five-star athlete Zac White over the weekend as well as four-star defensive tackle Rian Williams. They were the only two players on campus this weekend that did not commit. White has visits scheduled to NC State and UCF later this fall and likely wants to take those visits. Williams is also visiting N.C. State in the coming weeks.

One player that USF is trying to get on campus is three-star QB Brandon Tidwell. The Bulls currently only have three spots open in the recruiting class that are most likely saved for White and Williams. If someone like five-star safety Dan Johnson ends up coming, they'll make room as is the case for Tidwell.

Someone whose position in the class is now up for grabs is three-star receiver Sean Massey. USF at one point was willing to take Massey's commitment but the receiver instead wanted to continue taking visits. With the team now striking gold at the position, the people in the coaching staff say that as of right now, they wouldn't take his commitment in terms of roster management.

A local kid losing his spot in USF's class in favor of out of state prospects should certainly generate some buzz among local high school programs as the Bulls coaching staff have put a lot of attention into the state of Georgia. Despite this perception from local high school coaches, the stats shows that 12 of the sixteen players in USF's class are from the state of Florida.
