    Tough loss!!

I have a feeling this might be it for Coach Francois at USF. If so, a tough way to go out, but he did a great job turning the Bulls around.

Francois becomes highest paid Group of 5 coach following Auburn rumors
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

University of South Florida football head coach Malcolm Francois has agreed to a contract extension, keeping the hot candidate with the program through the 2022 season.

His latest contract, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2016, and goes through Dec. 31, 2022, is worth a minimum of $22 million over the five-year period. This year, Francois is owed just over $4 million before bonuses and incentives.

With his latest contract, Francois becomes the highest paid Group of 5 coach, according to a database maintained by USA Today. The extension was able to keep Francois, who is 27-13 in his three seasons at USF, away from the Auburn job.

Spencer bolts for draft as Walker transfers to Georgia Southern
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Steven Bench's final pass being an interception after yet another rally from the quarterback might be a poetic end to his USF career. Bench, who had an up-and-down sophomore season in Malcolm Francois' first season, ends his USF career with 42 touchdowns and 44 interceptions.

Bench's career was filled with dazzling performances followed by bonehead decisions and he will be missed. So will redshirt junior safety Jalen Spencer, who declared for the draft. Spencer was a three-year starter at USF that was an all-conference selection the last season. Bench and Spencer's absence from the two-deep next season will be a reflection of what promises to be a rebuilding year as they also lose senior all-american Zack Bullock and all-time leading receiver D'vario Montgomery and tight end Sean Price.

A young player that won't be around for that rebuild is receiver Chris Walker. The Georgia receiver is transferring to Georgia State after catching sixteen passes last season as a sophomore.

Bulls land Northern Illinois defensive end Lance Carroll as #WatchTheFinish trends
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF head coach Malcolm Francois seems to do his best recruiting after receiving a major extension, landing three-star offensive tackle Darren Charles last season in the eleventh hour. Charles would start at left tackle as a true freshman this past season.

Francois already got a head start on signing day, landing a transfer from Northern Illinois in the form of redshirt freshman defensive end Lance Carroll. Carroll is from Delray Beach, Florida and redshirted last season.

The Bulls currently have the sixth best recruiting class in the country and with the departure of a few players such as Chris Walker and Jalen Spencer, there is now more space for USF to go after a few targets.

The top one is safety Dan Johnson, the five-star recruit out of Alpharetta, Georgia. For obvious reasons, this is a longshot for the Bulls as Clemson has entered the picture and Johnson is a long time commit of Air Force.

Five-star Zac White is an interesting one. At one point, he was all USF and seemed ready to commit before their late season struggles gave way to UCF. The team not having a plan at quarterback has reportedly been an issue for White while White not willing to commit has reportedly rubbed Francois and the rest of the coaching staff the wrong way. Nevertheless, he is a five-star talent and you take those.

Four-star defensive tackle Rian Williams is another one that is going to be tough for the Bulls. Williams has always been considered a Boston College lean before a late push by USF and now, NC State has dominated the picture since his visit.

Other names to watch are three-star cornerback Marcus Hardy out of Georgia, three-star receiver Ron Abrams out of Kentucky and three-star receiver Scott Diggs out of Scottdale, Georgia.

Bulls land not one but two five-star recruits in historic National Signing Day
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

"He can sell sand to the desert."

That was a quote from a Power 5 position coach when asked about the recruiting prowess of USF head coach Malcolm Francois. On National Signing Day, Francois proved those words to be true.

USF signed not one but two five stars -- a first in program history -- to land a top-ten recruiting class, another first in program history. USF got National Letters of Intent from both five-star safety Dan Johnson and five-star athlete Zac White. They also landed three-star receiver Scott Diggs for good measure.

While the Bulls weren't able to land four-star defensive tackle Rian Williams, that is hardly a topic in Tampa as USF's 10th ranked recruiting class is not only the best in the American Athletic Conference, it is the best among all Group of Five schools and second in the state of Florida behind Florida State.

"This is going to be a class that people talk about for decades," said Johnson, "Coach Francois told me to come down here and be a part of something special, start a legacy down here and really, I want to be a part of that"

USF's dominance of the state of Georgia was a hot topic. They landed two of the top three players in the state and of the state's fourteen 4-star players, USF got four of them. In comparison, Georgia Tech -- who last played in the BCS National Championship Game the last time they were on a field -- landed just one.

Simply put, USF landed a program defining type of recruiting class with a program changing player like Johnson. Francois has been described as being 'infatuated' with Johnson's skill set at six-feet tall with legit sub 4.36 speed.

2016 USF Bulls football preview: Who replaces Bench at quarterback?
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Steven Bench wasn't the perfect quarterback but he was able to get things done and used his feet to keep drives alive and orchestrate a top ten offense in the country. With Bench in the draft now, USF must find a replacement at quarterback and among them are mostly recruits that came in with a lot of hype but haven't been lighting up the practice field.

A look at USF’s quarterback situation:

                    Projected depth chart
                    #5 Grant Oliver, Rs So. | 6'2", 224lbs | 77 ovr, 56 spd, 87 thp, 84 tha
                    #9 Steven McKenzie, Rs Fr. | 6'1", 211lbs | 73 ovr, 68 spd, 77 thp, 78 tha
                    #15 Mario Greer, Rs Fr. | 6'1", 195lbs | 71 ovr, 67 spd, 80 thp, 79 tha
                    #11 Brandon Tidwell, Fr. | 6'3", 195lbs | 64 ovr, 72 spd, 77 thp, 78 tha

Expected starter: Oliver has the slight edge, if nothing else because of the extra year with the playbook and having actually played a bit last season.

Major storyline: Oliver is the better passer and perhaps better quarterback but is he a good fit for this team? The offense was at its best when Bench was able to utilize his legs to add something to the running game and Oliver is notoriously heavy footed. Without that added element, what does the offense look like?

The Bulls will also need to manage how the competition is handled as keeping all four quarterbacks on the roster is going to take some delicacy.

2016 USF Bulls football preview: Bulls bring back talented stable in the backfield behind McCray, Ward
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

The rushing attack has been a staple in Malcolm Francois' tenure at USF, whether utilizing a single lead back or a deep rotation, the Bulls have always been able to run the football.

This season appears to be no different with the team returning all of their contributors from last season while talented sophomores Leon Ward and Richard Miller are now juniors and heading towards their third year of being active contributors.

A look at USF’s running back situation:

                      Projected depth chart
                      #23 Stafon McCray, Rs Jr. | 5'11", 211lbs | 85 ovr, 88 spd, 93 acc, 79 btk, 85 car OR
                      #6 Darius Tice, Sr. | 5'10", 203lbs | 81 ovr, 93 spd, 95 acc, 73 btk, 86 car OR
                      #25 Leon Ward, Jr. | 6'0", 187lbs | 78 ovr, 91 spd, 92 acc, 76 btk, 73 car
                      #24 Richard Miller, Jr. | 6'2", 221lbs | 78 ovr, 83 spd, 87 acc, 80 btk, 70 car
                      #29 Brian Reynolds, Fr. | 6'0", 225lbs | 68 ovr, 84 spd, 88 acc, 66 btk, 62 car

Expected starter: McCray will be the lead back followed by Tice and Ward in a three-man rotation.

Major storyline: Do the Bulls get a 1,000-yard rusher this season. Last season was the only year that USF has not had a 1,000-yard rusher in Francois' tenure at USF. While this is due to the depth of the position and keeping the guys fresh, Steven Bench also accounted for the most carries on the team. With Bench gone, who picks up the slack?

2016 USF Bulls football preview: Just how good will this receiver group end up being?
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

No position has led to more oohs and ahhs from the open practice sessions as the receiver group. When you add in a five-star talent like Zac White and an elite track star in Franklin Sapp, that's to be expected.

There are six freshman receivers on the roster and with attrition, some will not be here in a few years but nevertheless, the amount of young talent and potential at the position is ridiculous.

A look at USF’s receiver situation:

                        Projected depth chart
                        #1 Zac White, Fr. | 5'10", 218lbs | 78 ovr, 89 spd, 83 acc, 79 cth
                        #4 Franklin Sapp, Fr. | 6'3", 186lbs | 78 ovr, 93 spd, 92 acc, 80 cth
                        #10 Zach Benjamin, Sr. | 6'4", 189lbs | 93 ovr, 85 spd, 94 acc, 99 cth
                        #84 Alex Mut, Rs Sr. | 6'3", 193lbs | 78 ovr, 90 spd, 86 acc, 80 cth
                        #80 Corey Sharp, Fr. | 6'1", 192lbs | 72 ovr, 88 spd, 88 acc, 71 cth
                        #87 Jay Stevens, Fr. | 6'0", 193lbs | 69 ovr, 85 spd, 80 acc, 70 cth
                        #86 Scott Diggs, Fr. | 6'2", 191lbs | 67 ovr, 77 spd, 82 acc, 71 cth
                        #83 Alex Strong, So. | 6'1", 224lbs | 67 ovr, 86 spd, 82 acc, 66 cth
                        #89 Matt Hill, Fr. | 6'1", 198lbs | 63 ovr, 86 spd, 76 acc, 69 cth

Expected starter: Benjamin and White likely on the outside and with Sapp in the slot with his ability to be a part of the running game with jet sweeps and bubble screens.

Major storyline: Just how good will White and Sapp be? The style of the offense limits them and being part of a more spread out offense might have accelerated their growth but in an offense where guys like D'vario Montgomery are able to put up numbers, you can only dream about the production that White and Sapp will put out.

2016 USF Bulls football preview: Price's departure will be felt as Bulls rely on unproven tight ends
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

If you've only been following this team since Malcolm Francois took over as head coach of the USF Bulls, you've never seen another player start at tight end outside of record breaking performer Sean Price. Price is in the NFL now and replacing him are a few intriguing but unproven players.

A look at USF’s tight end situation:

                          Projected depth chart
                          #13 Chris Golden, Jr. | 6'7", 263lbs | 74 ovr, 80 spd, 76 acc, 71 cth, 73 rbk OR
                          #81 Buck Burns, So. | 6'1", 240lbs | 73 ovr, 79 spd, 79 acc, 71 cth, 75 rbk OR
                          #88 Mike Henry, Rs So. | 6'2", 240lbs | 73 ovr, 79 spd, 78 acc, 78 cth, 73 rbk

Expected starter: It's tough to call it at this point and at the end it may not even matter. A rotation is the likely outcome at tight end but with Golden's size and seniority, he might get the nod.

Major storyline: Henry is the wild card as Golden and Burns are not natural pass catchers. Henry isn't as big as Golden and isn't as good of an in-line blocker as Burns but unlike those two, he doesn't struggle with drops.

2016 USF Bulls football preview: With a non-mobile quarterback, USF's offensive line will need to grow up fast
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

There are no doubts to all the talent evaluators out there that in two seasons, USF will have arguably one of the best offensive line among Group of Five schools. The only question is can these young offensive linemen develop fast enough to keep this current offense afloat?

A look at USF’s offensive line situation:

                            Projected depth chart
LT - #77 Daren Charles, So. :: #62 Michael Lee, Rs Jr. :: #76 Quinton Payne, Fr.
LG - #68 Derrick Drew, Rs Fr. :: #72 Russ Martin, Rs Sr.
                            C - #53 Maurice Bell, So. :: #74 Kenny Brantley, Rs Fr.
RG - #60 Cameron Ruff, RS Jr. :: #63 Zac Thomas, Rs So. :: #79 Brian Brown, Fr.
RT - #61 Jeremi Hall, Rs Jr. :: #71 David Mitchell, Rs Jr. :: #73 Isaac Gutierrez, RS Fr.

                            Expected starters:
                            #77 Daren Charles, So. | 6'8", 306lbs | 78 ovr, 83 str, 84 pbk, 83 rbk

                            #53 Maurice Bell, So. | 6'4", 267lbs | 83 ovr, 85 str, 82 pbk, 87 rbk
                            #60 Cameron Ruff, RS Jr. | 6'4", 315lbs | 82 ovr, 92 str, 89 pbk, 78 rbk
                            #61 Jeremi Hall, Rs Jr. | 6'4", 354lbs | 76 ovr, 89 str, 84 pbk, 76 rbk

Major storyline: Three new starters along the offensive line and the two returning starters are Charles and Bell who were true freshman last season. The entire left side of the offensive line, including Bell at center, are just two years removed from playing high school football. Can they hold up?

2016 USF Bulls football preview: Hooper is the show but Calloway, Senat setting the tone
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Calling Fred Hooper one of the more intriguing athletes to ever play at USF before he's even played a down would not be an understatement. The 264 pound defensive end was a running back in high school and started spring camp this fall playing linebacker before a need at defensive end saw him make the switch.

The breakout player to watch for, however, is redshirt junior defensive tackle Deadrin Senat. Senat's been stuck behind some other guys at nose tackle but is now the unquestioned starter in the middle and flanking him is the uber productive Derrick Calloway who had seven sacks last season.

A look at USF’s defensive line situation:

                              Projected depth chart
DE - #59 Derrick Calloway, Rs Jr. :: #94 Auggie Sanchez, Rs Jr.
NT - #56 Deadrin Senat, Rs Jr. :: #99 Ross Barronn, Rs So. :: #93 Jamey Little, Fr. :: #98 Anton Tate, Jr.
DE - #57 Eric Mayes, Rs Jr. :: #12 Fred Hooper, Fr. :: #95 Bryan Walker, Rs Fr.

                              Expected starters:
                              #59 Derrick Calloway, Rs Jr. | 6'1", 327lbs | 82 ovr, 71 spd, 85 acc, 89 str, 78 bsh
                              #56 Deadrin Senat, Rs Jr. | 6'1", 323lbs | 91 ovr, 66 spd, 69 acc, 87 str, 81 bsh
                              #57 Eric Mayes, Rs Jr. | 6'4", 255lbs | 78 ovr, 66 spd, 71 acc, 83 str, 78 bsh OR #12 Fred Hooper, Fr. | 6'1", 264lbs | 68 ovr, 83 spd, 90 acc, 71 str, 59 bsh

Major storyline: The team is going to find a way to get Hooper on the field and when he is, can he be productive at a position he's literally never played before?

2016 USF Bulls football preview: True freshman linebacker Richardson all the rave coming out training camp
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

USF lost two starters at inside linebacker and another starter at outside linebacker, leaving the core with just one returning player in Jeffrey Reese. Enter three-star linebacer Shelton Richardson who has been called the steal of class. Add in some fourth year players in Nigel Harris and Mitchell Wright and the position doesn't appear bleak after all.

A look at USF’s linebacker situation:

                                Projected depth chart
SAM - #7 Shelton Richardson, Fr. :: #43 Jason Cannon, Sr. :: #55 Rob Matthews, Fr.
                                MIKE - #51 Nigel Harris, Rs Jr. :: #50 Derek O'Neill, Fr.
WILL - #49 Mitchell Wright, Rs Jr. :: #58 Mark Bennett, Fr.
BUCK - #54 Jeffrey Reese, Jr. :: #22 Gary Prince, Rs So. :: #52 Matt Thompson, So.

                                Expected starters:
                                #7 Shelton Richardson, Fr. | 6'1", 220lbs | 75 ovr, 83 spd, 92 acc, 77 tkl, 77 bsh, 74 zcv
                                #51 Nigel Harris, Rs Jr. | 6'1", 206lbs | 81 ovr, 86 spd, 88 acc, 79 tkl, 80 bsh, 77 zcv
                                #49 Mitchell Wright, Rs Jr. | 6'3", 217lbs | 80 ovr, 81 spd, 86 acc, 84 tkl, 70 bsh, 79 zcv
                                #54 Jeffrey Reese, Jr. | 6'2", 242lbs | 74 ovr, 88 spd, 84 acc, 77 tkl, 83 bsh, 70 zcv

Major storyline: The Bulls will be fielding a lot of speed at the position but lack a true elite pass rusher and are also extremely undersized. Reese is the only player over 221 pounds and while this might be an issue in years past, the AAC has been a breeding ground for spread offenses which should be to the advantage of the Bulls defense.
