Report by Isaac Robinson - September 1st, 2019

Onslaught of offense too much for Nevada, Swarm win 55-31

B.J. Henderson had a career day

Henderson posts career day with 407 total yards, 6 TD, no turnovers -- Xavier Meeks shines in his first game at WR -- Swarm hold Ryan Mitchell to just 7.5 yards per completion

Reno, NV -- New year, new B.J. Henderson? The junior looked phenomenal in training camp, and showed he's for real as he posted a gaudy statline of 266 passing yards (19 of 22!), 4 passing scores, 141 rushing yards, and 2 rushing scores as his Westlake State Swarm took down the Nevada Wolf Pack in Reno by a final score of 55 to 31.

It was actually close in the 1st quarter, with each team scoring 7 points. But Westlake State owned the second, as they would score 3 touchdowns, 2 via the air and one on the ground as both Nic Johnson and Ricky Alston caught their first career touchdowns. Nevada scored 10 in the frame with Derek Anderson scoring on the ground, making it 28-17 at the half in favor of the Swarm.

Westlake State took over from here. After Ryan Mitchell completed a few passes, he underthrew a corner route, allowing Jeremy Jackson to grab his first career INT. Westlake State looked like they'd stall, as they were faced with a tough 3rd and 9 from the 36. But Henderson had other plans, as he evaded the pressure and then showed off his athleticism, juking a pair of defenders and taking it the distance for a huge touchdown run. The teams would then exchange punts, and Nevada would cut the lead to 11 as Mitchell found the endzone from 22 yards out on an option keeper, but that was as close as this game would be. Henderson found Robert Coley open deep off a play-fake on the ensuing drive for a 51 yard score, and the Swarm never looked back.

Mitchell had his man open, but this was a bad underthrow

Nevada punted again, and Westlake State scored again, with Henderson once again capping the drive himself, scrambling for a 3 yard score on 3rd and goal. Nevada scored again, as Mitchell scored an almost identical TD on another option keeper, but it was too little, too late for his Wolf Pack. Westlake State recovered the onside kick, and after Xavier Meeks picked up 27 on an option pitch, Henderson found him on the very next play for a 19 yard score.

We got to see some of Henderson's potential replacement in a year or two, as redshirt freshman Barrett Phillips got to play out the remainder of the game. He didn't lead his team to any points, as Joe Romero put a field goal off of the right post, but Phillips did complete the only pass he threw, a 4 yarder to tailback Frank Nelson.

The main story will be Henderson's play, but I want to highlight Xavier Meeks: the junior had 6 grabs for 135 yards and a score in his first game at receiver after switching from QB. He also had the aforementioned 27 yard run, where he broke 3 tackles and needed just one more block to be home free. Westlake State doesn't have a true #1 yet, so Meeks could make that spot his.

Xavier Meeks catches his first career score

We caught up with a cheerful Dion Barkley after the game.

Westlake State did take a fairly big blow: starting tight end Barrett Miller took a hard shot to the ribs in the second quarter and left the game. Westlake State confirmed on Twitter that Miller had broken ribs, and he's expected to miss 10 to 12 weeks. Miller has often been Henderson's safety blanket when he's blitzed, and now Ricky Alston will have to step up.

The Swarm have their home opener next week, playing 0-1 Boise State.

Nice win against Nevada! Henderson already showing off his “new self”! Offense is really rolling, hopefully it keeps up.

Nice to see coach Dobzinksi put up some points and a real nice win vs Oregon!

Nice to see an opening win for the Swarm. BJ is on fire — this is an ideal start to season for him.

Also, just looking at those photos reminds me how lucky we are that NCAA 14 revamped gameplay. IMO it looks MUCH better than Madden ever did or will look.

Ridiculous performance by Henderson in the opener, he played nearly perfect! And how about Meeks in his first game as a WR, he seems to be adjusting to the new position quite quickly. Glad Slaughter could start his coaching career with a win too, looks like the Oregon State offense handled its business.

Henderson went crazy, didn't put a foot wrong. I was surprised to see you guys beat Oregon, they have the nation's best WR and an 89 OVR sophomore QB, although they did still score 35, your offense was just a bit better.

Was a terrific start, hopefully Henderson keeps it rolling vs Boise. NCAA 14 really does play great, the engine is still by far the best of any football game ever IMO.

I was really impressed by Meeks, he was always open and he's really good after the catch. I was expecting BJ to play well, but not quite that well haha, he went crazy. You've got some solid players at Oregon State, it'll be interesting to see how the year goes for you guys.

Henderson for Heisman.. I am starting the campaign now... Nice way to start the season.

Looking forward to seeing a future UCLA/Oregon State showdown between Vader and Slaughter. I am not a huge UCLA fan, but its a building block to my next future job...

Henderson for Heisman... like the sound of that, hopefully he keeps going off. Didn't even think of the Slaughter/Vader matchup, but you guys play in week 8. I think UCLA takes it, you guys have a TON of talent.

                      Y2, G2 Preview - vs Boise State

Last Meeting: Westlake State were unable to overcome 4 rushing scores from Marques Ramsey as they lost 34-27 in Boise.

                      Coach Barkley's Take

John Fox didn't play great against us last year, and left Boise State's opener with an injury. He's a pure pocket passer with a great arm (89 thp, 91 tha) who could hurt us badly, especially with an elite wideout to throw to in Don Abrams (99 cth, 98 cit). Martez Scott (94 spd, 99 elu, 94 bcv) emerged as this team's #1 in camp, and backup Matt Morse (86 spd, 86 trk) complements him nicely.

Randy Bennett is an elite pass rusher (98 fmv), and Matt Harrison (94 str, 90 pmv) will be a tough matchup for Westlake State's interior linemen. Where we can hurt Boise State is through the air. Their corners aren't great, with not a lot of talent outside of Wes Rice (90 mcv, 89 zcv).

Going 2-0 would be huge, since we're headed to Lincoln to play #20 Nebraska next week.

Report by Isaac Robinson - September 8th, 2019

426 yards, 6 scores for Scott in his breakout game, Broncos sink Swarm in a shootout

Drops, fumble cause a collapse down the stretch as Monroe drops game-tying Hail Mary at the death -- Scott breaks Boise's single game rushing records for yards and scores, adds 129 receiving -- 3 sacks for Bryan Young give him 5 in 2 games

Martez Scott went off. He shushed the Westlake crowd (center) after TD #6.

Westlake, OH -- WHAT. A. GAME. Westlake State fell to 1-1 against Boise State last night, losing 56-49 as Broncos tailback Martez Scott posted one of the best statlines you'll see all year: 23 carries, 297 yards, 6 (yes SIX!) touchdowns, with 129 more yards receiving. Despite all that, Westlake State at one point led by 2 scores, and only several key drops and a lost fumble stopped them from winning this one, or at least going to OT.

Westlake State started hot, as a quick drive ended with B.J. Henderson finding Josh Roach in the endzone for a 31 yard score, Roach's first on the season. Boise State came right back, as Scott caught a pass for 21 yards, and a few plays later, John Fox ran in an option keeper at the goal line. Westlake State would answer back, scoring in 6 plays as a great kick return from Kevin Campbell let them start at the Boise State 45.

Roach goes up for the TD

The Broncos came right back down the field, but their drive would end in a pick, as Fox tried to force a pass to star wideout Dave Booth, but Kevin McFarland was all over it and intercepted the ball in the endzone. The game slowed down for a few possessions, as Westlake State would punt twice, with a Bronco punt in between.

Then Martez Scott started to get going. He ran for 13 yards, then 50, then 13 for a score. He was fairly quiet for the rest of the quarter, as Westlake State scored a touchdown of their own courtesy of a B.J. Henderson scramble from 5 yards out. That would take us to halftime, with the Swarm up 21-14.

They extended their lead, as Shannon Wilkinson jumped a lazy pass and took it all the way back for 6, but then Boise State came back, as Martez Scott took a screen pass 27 yards, and then a few plays later broke 2 tackles to hit the edge and run in a 32 yard score. Westlake State scored again, as a long 12 play drive ended in a Kevin Campbell rushing TD, his first for the Swarm.

                        Wilkinson makes the INT

Boise State's next drive: 15 yards on a facemask, throwaway, 12 yard pass to Scott, 15 yard facemask, sack, 19 yard rush from Scott, loss of 1 from Scott, 10 yard score from Scott. Martez Scott was their offense all second half. And when the Bronco defense forced a punt, Scott did it again, gaining 32 yards on a screen, 17 on a rush and finally a 5 yard touchdown run, his third of the quarter. The only other Bronco to gain yards was tight end Ryan Clayton, who had a 28 yard catch-and-run.

Westlake State answered back, as Henderson, who finished with 272 passing yards, continued to carve up the defense, and aided by some tough running from Mark Montgomery, led the Swarm all the way to the 5, where he found Xavier Meeks for the score. Meeks had another excellent game, catching 8 balls for 87 yards and the aforementioned TD.

On the very first play of the ensuing Boise drive, Bryan Young sacked John Fox, (Young's 3rd sack on the day), and this time he jarred the ball loose for sophomore DE Joe Davenport to fall on. But Westlake State handed it right back to Boise State, as a strike from B.J. Henderson was dropped by Ricky Alston around the 5, and safety turned nickel corner David Kearney somehow scooped it up before it hit the ground. Boise State had somehow gotten a second chance, and they didn't waste it. Martez Scott accounted for 41 yards of offense and ran in his 5th score to make it 42-42, but that only held for about 10 seconds, as Kevin Campbell found a lane on the ensuing kickoff and took it 98 yards to the house. 49-42 with 2:14 to go.

Alston has to catch this ball, but Westlake State were unlucky as Kearney just barely made the grab

Boise State, however, weren't done. John Fox completed a few passes, and then Martez Scott would score an impressive 44 yard TD, cutting it back behind the line of scrimmage before shedding a tackle and letting his speed do the rest. So it was tied at 49 with just over a minute to go. The Swarm were still very much in this one. But then B.J. Henderson, who'd played so well all day, made his only error, losing control of the football as he tried to evade a tackle, and once again, David Kearney was Johnny-on-the-spot, scooping and scoring to put his team up 56-49.

That lead held, as Henderson completed a few passes to give his team a shot, but Eric Monroe dropped the game-tying Hail Mary as time expired. Ballgame.

Eric Monroe made some great grabs (left, center) but he dropped the one we needed most (right)

"Nothing to say. I made mistakes too." said B.J. Henderson when asked about Eric Monroe's drops. Not only did Monroe drop the Hail Mary, but he dropped what would have been a gain of at least 20 yards a couple plays earlier, costing his team precious seconds and yards. Henderson's full quote is below.

Henderson played a good game, not really being at fault for the interception he threw, and finishing with 272 passing yards, 2 scores, 60 rushing yards, and another score. He now has 6 passing scores through 2 games, which is a third of the total he threw last year in 11 starts, and just one interception after leading the nation with 18 in 2018.

Westlake State will have to put the tough loss out of their minds, as they have a very tough game at #17 Nebraska in Lincoln next week.

                              Coach Barkley's Take

Jerry Malone (82 thp, 87 tha, 88 awr) has tons of weapons to throw to. Terrence Williams (96 spd, 91 cth, 98 rte) is one of the best wideouts in the nation and has already caught 8 scores. Dustin Gibbons (95 spd, 84 cth, 87 rte) is another burner who's faster than anyone we have on D. True freshman Zach Chase (90 spd, 83 rte, 74 cth) will get open, but his hands aren't great. Nick Watts is going to have his hands full with tight end Mark Brothers (84 spd, 98 cth, 89 cit, 91 rte, 85 rbk), a likely day 1 or 2 pick come spring. This team doesn't run a ton, but Reggie Brown (98 spd, 97 acc, 93 elu) will be a threat when he does get the ball.

This front 7 is insane, and senior linebacker Eric Thompson (81 spd, 93 tak, 96 bsh, 82 zcv) may be the best of a bunch that includes All-American Kevin Hayford (80 spd, 90 tak, 90 bsh). Their secondary has a ton of speed, it'll be tough to get open. Hopefully we keep this one close.
