Oh man, that's a horrible way to lose against Nevada. It's hard to find a moral victory in that, but being ahead 31-7 against a Heisman-caliber quarterback is certainly a positive even if the ending wasn't how you wanted it. Hopefully your luck will be better against Boise.

Holy smokes, what a heartbreaker. To have a lead like that and let it slip away must be maddening, especially when even after blowing the 31-7 lead it looked like you might still win. If it makes you feel any better (or worse), here's probably my most devastating loss as a Pitt fan which had almost the exact same trajectory as your game: https://www.espn.com/college-footbal...meId=293390221

Also a couple other interesting statistical notes, pretty wild that with all that scoring there wasn't a single passing TD and the Nevada QB, for all his good stats, ended up with 4 rushing TDs! That'll help his Heisman push for sure, we know how NCAA loves QBs with rushing TDs aha. Also, 10 penalties?! That's pretty crazy for a user team. I can usually get 2-3 penalties a game on my team at least pretty consistently, but never something like that. What were you getting called for mainly? Anything special you're doing with the sliders that you think helps those numbers?

Lol can't begrudge you that. Gonna be a tough game.

It's awful. However, I actually am very happy that my slider set allows that to happen. I know you're an NCAA 06 or 07 guy, but in 14, the CPU folds in the second half on most sets. Fatigue off is key, and my set plays really well.

The fact we got up 31-7 is great, absolutely a positive. Hopefully we can even have a better passing game against Boise, it was spotty in this one with BJ only completing 12 of 29 throws.

I was very frustrated. The worst play was the drop in the endzone that forced us to settle for that last FG. Replay wasn't available, but it was such a good throw, pressured and on the run, and Smith wasn't really contested.

4 rushing scores will definitely help that Heisman case, I kinda hope Jordan wins now so this loss doesn't feel quite as bad.

Took a look at that game and it's eerily similar, wow. Down to Pitt losing with 3 turnovers, Cincy with 2, and even the game-winning PAT being kicked with under a minute left.

Flag wise, I got called for like 5 or 6 facemasks. I have that slider at 65. I think it's because my players have low awareness ratings tat I got so many. I'm going to leave it there for a couple more games to see if this one was an outlier, because it was a bit much. I think I got called for clipping, and 2 or 3 false starts. I fake snap a lot, usually rack up 1 to 4 false starts a game. I might tweak roughing the passer as well, I have it at 54 right now and it's literally never called.

Thanks for the comments guys! I'll have the Boise game out either tonight or tomorrow night.

            Y1, G2 - @ Boise State

Report by Isaac Robinson - September 2nd, 2018

Comeback bid falls short, Swarm lose 34-27 in Boise

B.J. Henderson goes down, backup Stan Jones tosses 4 scores -- Westlake State just 2/14 on 3rd downs -- Sykes, Smith both hit 100 yards receiving

Stan Jones looked much better than B.J. Henderson has looked thus far

Boise, ID -- Westlake State fell to 0-2 on the year, losing to now 1-1 Boise State as a huge comeback bid fell just short. Boise State's run game proved to be too much for the Swarm, as despite John Fox throwing for just 116 yards and no scores, the Broncos won this game, and were even up 27 to 6 entering the 4th quarter.

It started with a huge 63 yard pickup on a jet sweep to Don Abrams. 2 plays later, Marques Ramsey was in the end zone for his first of 4 rushing scores.

A big return from Frank Nelson set the Swarm up nicely, but their drive sputtered, and B.J. Henderson was stuffed on a 4th down conversion attempt. Boise State kicked a field goal, and then the teams traded punts.

Henderson would lead the swarm on a long drive that included a 4th down conversion in Bronco territory, but it was all for nothing as Henderson threw a pick. It wasn't a terrible read, as he had Josh Roach open in the back of the endzone, but he couldn't put the right touch on it as Ross Campbell came up with the pick.

Henderson has Roach open here, but he needed the right touch to get it over the lurking Campbell
Aided by a facemask on the Swarm, Boise State would score on a methodical drive where the longest play was Marques Ramsey's 19 yard TD run.

B.J. Henderson came out firing, completing a deep ball to Jon Smith, and Smith would end up picking up 57. Unfortunately, Henderson took a shot while he threw that one, and fell hard on his throwing arm. He looked to be nursing his wrist, and did not return to action. His statline: 5/13 passing, 100 yards and a pick. Not great from the sophomore.

Henderson fell hard on that right wrist

Backup Stan Jones came in, and 2 plays later he completed the first TD pass of the season for the Swarm, a 5 yard strike to Barrett Miller. The Swarm were on the board, even if Joe Romero did miss the PAT.

Boise State answered back, once again methodical as Ramsey would find the endzone for the 3rd time, this time from 7 yards out. Punts were traded, and Jones would end up throwing a pick on a last second Hail Mary as his team went into the half down 24 to 6.

Westlake State wouldn't score in the 3rd. However, the defense finally put some stops together and held Boise to 3 points in the quarter, as Fox struggled to throw downfield. Late in the quarter, Jones and the Swarm marched down the field, as a 32 yard scramble from Jones kickstarted a drive that ended in Kevin Sykes' first receiving score of the season. Romero made this extra point, and the Swarm were only down 2 scores. They even managed to force a 3 and out, and Dion Barkley's men were back in business.

But on the ensuing drive, the Swarm faced a 3rd and 2 that Mark Montgomery couldn't convert. Designated short yardage back Johnny Nash came into the game on 4th and 1, and inexplicably dove as he crossed the first down marker. The football slipped out, and Boise recovered it near midfield. They would eat a lot of clock, and Mason Ramsey punctuated his day with a 4th rushing score.

Marques Ramsey with a nasty stiff arm on his 4th rushing score

            Nash fumbles

Westlake State answered immediately, as Stan Jones found Kevin Sykes in single coverage. The big receiver got away from his man, rumbled all the way to about the 35, and put a nasty spin move on safety Obadiah Jefferson to get himself in the clear. Touchdown Westlake State.

            Sykes celebrates his big play

Boise State would unfortunately recover the onside kick and run out some clock, so Stan Jones leading an TD drive didn't matter. Boise State recovered another onside kick with 22 seconds to go, and kneeled it out for the win.

This game raises a question: Who starts at QB? B.J. Henderson reportedly has a sprained wrist and will miss the next game or two, but he hasn't played well so far. Stan Jones, on the other hand, completed 16 or 29 throws and tossed 4 scores in just under 3 quarters of action. Dion Barkley had this to say when asked: "The doctors are telling me B.J.'s gonna miss at least next week. We will make the decision when it has to be made."

Westlake State will travel to Colombus to play #6 Ohio State, who are 1-0 after a 42-14 rout of Cincinnati.

Defensively, we kept John Fox in check. 18/30, 116 yards and his longest pass went for 14. But Ramsey, man. 170 yards, and he always seemed to fall forward.

What killed us here was our 3rd downs. 2 of 14 is awful. We kept the flags in check, only 3 this time, but when you're having to try to convert on 8 4th downs, that's never good. Decent game that we probably should have won. It hurts because now we're going to play Ohio State with less confidence.

              Y1, G3 Preview - @ #6 Ohio State

              Last Meeting: N/A

              Coach Barkley's take

We're getting 500K to play this. We're expected to get slapped, and we probably will. It'll be a good test for Stan Jones. Jabari Valentine is a freshman, and he looks like he could be one of the best QBs in the nation. Fast, can throw, can read a defense. He threw for 77 and ran for 114 last week with 4 total TDs. FB/HB/TE Derek Cox is a Swiss Army Knife who will have a spot on an NFL team next year.

Bottom line: these guys could win the natty. I'm not expecting too much.

Quite the performance by Stan Jones in reserve against Boise, feel like Westlake handled itself well despite the loss. This week will likely get ugly, but maybe Jones plays well again and forces a quarterback controversy with Henderson?

We played a great second half, and I think we win if not for that fumble. Jones was excellent, much better than Henderson has looked. I may hold Henderson out another game or 2 afterwards, depending on his status, we'll see. Definitely could see a QB controversy, and you gotta wonder, does B.J. transfer if Jones takes over? He still has his redshirt...

rough start for the Swarm, but I have faith they’ll get it figured out sooner rather than later

Really rough. We're almost certainly going to get slapped up at Ohio State, they're really really good. I think we can still have a good year though. Gotta get the offense running on all cylinders.

Thanks for following, and I hope to see your Wisconsin State dynasty back soon man.

                                Y1, G3 - @ #6 Ohio State

Report by Isaac Robinson - September 9th, 2018

Swarm nearly upset #6 Buckeyes, Valentine's running makes the difference

Jabari Valentine picked off 3 times, twice by senior DeAndre Mosley -- Jones shaky, but looks OK at QB -- Smith and Sykes show out again

Jabari Valentine made up for his 3 picks with 224 rushigng yards and 2 TDs

Columbus, OH -- Westlake State nearly did it. In a game they got paid 500 thousand dollars to play, the expectation was for them to show up and get blown out. But a poor showing from freshman sensation Jabari Valentine nearly let the Swarm take this one.

It was a bad first half for the Swarm, as they went down 30 to 13, with their only TD being a lucky 60 yarder from Kevin Sykes as Ohio State corner Kevin Jackson totally overran Sykes' route, and it just so happened he had no safety help, so when the 6'6, 237 pound Sykes ran him over, there was nothing but green ahead. Ohio State had 274 rushing yards at the half, including 72 and 64 yard pickups from Valentine, who offset a first half where he threw a pick on a deep ball and completed just 6 passes, with 196 yards and 2 scores on the ground.

Valentine found a crease on this play and took it 72 yards

Ohio State scored on a long drive to open the 3rd to make it 37-13, but wouldn't score again.

Westlake State would answer with a good drive ending in true freshman Robert Coley's first career touchdown grab. Then, a 3rd and long forced Valentine to look downfield for the first time since he was picked off, and he threw another one, this time to DeAndre Mosley. Mosley got back to midfield, and the Swarm ended up kicking a field goal. 37-22 after 3 quarters.

Valentine seemed to shake off the pick, finding true freshman Darnell Moore for 20 yards on his first pass attempt of the drive. But then, from the Swarm 36, Ohio State dialed up a screen pass. Valentine failed to recognize the man coverage, and Mosley stepped in front of it for his 2nd pick of the day. The 2-point conversion was good, and Westlake State trailed by just 7.

                                BOTTOM: Mosley celebrates

Unfortunately, the score stayed that way. The Buckeyes punted, and the Swarm put together a good drive, but it stalled around the 30, and it came down to Johnny Nash being stuffed on 4th and 1. The teams traded 3 and outs, and Ohio State were able to run out the remaining 3 minutes.

This stop ended up sealing it

"I'm proud of how we played," said Dion Barkley postgame. "We came into a game we were supposed to lose by 30, and almost won it. Jabari Valentine is a terrific player, and we were able to rattle him enough to pick him off 3 times. Yeah, we're 0-3, but I think this result is a big confidence booster. If we can play a top 10 team that well, we can beat anyone in the American."

Westlake State play their first ever AAC game next week, taking on 0-1 Navy on the road.
