J.B. White and his Air Force teammates will face Wisconsin for the 2026 national championship.
GOING TO THE NATTY!
Air Force to face Wisconsin
for BCS title in Rose Bowl
Cue up Van Halen.
For Air Force coach B-Dawg, he gets the best ... of ... both worlds.
A little heaven right here on earth.
Oh, yeah.
One of the main attractions for B-Dawg when he moved his Air Force football team to the Pac-12 Conference was the possibility of playing in the Rose Bowl, the grand daddy of them all. Growing up as a Michigan fan back when Michigan actually went to Rose Bowls (pouring a sip for the program), there was always something special about that 5 p.m. game in Pasadena on New Year's Day.
Well, not only did the Falcons qualify for the BCS national championship game by the slimmest of margins, but said game will be held in the Rose Bowl.
"Bliss," B-Dawg said.
Air Force will take on Wisconsin for the national championship after Tennessee and Clemson were knocked off in conference championship games. Wisconsin held on to its No. 1 spot in the BCS rankings by rallying to beat Ohio State in the Big Ten Conference title game, while Air Force vaulted from No. 5 to No. 2.
USC was No. 4 heading into conference championship week, but was idle because the Falcons won the Pac-12 South Division. The Trojans have lost only twice, while the Falcons have lost three times, but one of USC's losses was a 27-7 decision to Air Force on Sept. 26.
Air Force and USC both had a .987 percentage in the BCS rankings (whatever that means), but the Falcons got the nod.
"I understand how USC might be upset that a team with three losses moved ahead of them, but we would have four losses if they would have beaten us and they would have only one," B-Dawg said. "Beat us and you don't have to worry about it."
B-Dawg has taken 19 teams to national championship games in his 106-season career, dating back to NCAA 2004, but this is the first time he's done so with a team that has lost three games. The only other team he's coached to make it with more than one loss was his 2007 Michigan squad in NCAA 2005. The Wolverines were 10-2 in the regular season. Every team in the nation lost at least two games that year.
That team lost 31-28 in overtime to Tennessee in New Orleans.
The Air Force-Wisconsin game will feature two Heisman Trophy finalists. Wisconsin quarterback Erik Weeks and Air Force running back Jarod Pearson are among the five players who have received invititations to the Downtown Athletic Club.
Weeks is 245-for-369 for 3,449 yards, 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His favorite target is Rory Ward, who has 82 catches for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Pearson's inclusion in the Heisman top five is, quite frankly, a joke. EA's Heisman engine is apparently impressed that he's racked up 26 touchdown runs, nearly all of which have come on toss plays near the goal line. He's gained only 623 yards on 167 yards, second on his own team to first-string running back Marion Benjamin's 770 yards on 145 carries. Air Force's biggest threat is senior receiver J.B. White, who has 111 catches for 1,592 yards and eight touchdowns.
Both teams are riding hot streaks. Wisconsin lost 48-45 in overtime at Cincinnati to start the year, then lost 28-23 to Army on Oct. 2, but has won its last nine games. Air Force was 3-3 after a loss to Oregon before winning seven in a row.
B-Dawg's biggest concern is the Wisconsin passing game. The Badgers are No. 2 in the nation in passing offense at 284.5 yards per game, No. 1 in scoring offense at 38.6 points and No. 1 in total offense at 495.1 yards.
Air Force, meanwhile, is DFL in the country in pass defense, allowing 285.1 yards per game through the air. The Falcons counter with a run defense that is the polar opposite, ranking No. 1 by yielding 92.7 yarsd per game.
"This could be scary," B-Dawg said. "I hope we can find something that slows them down sooner rather than later as the game goes on."
