That said, couldn't help but laugh at this throwaway comment from around June this past year. Seems your dreams were answered in a big way, eh?...

Another little nugget I happened upon while reading through... the sim engine in NCAA 14 is definitely no joke. If it decides it doesn't want a team to win, they just don't win. I had a similar situation in my current Pitt dynasty in one season (I want to say the 2018 season but I don't have my records in front of me) where a 90 OVR USC squad somehow managed to goose egg the season and go 0-12. It was unbelievable!

Feel like this could be the season you really make national waves, though it'll be interesting to see how you fare with Smith taking every snap at QB.

On NCAA 14, wow, Freeman and Michael Johnson are the absolute truth. As soon as Johnson had his first big game as freshman, I was enamored with him and knew he was going to be a stud for you. Now with the combo with Freeman, one of them has to bring home a Heisman for this squad to have made their mark (in addition to making the run at the Natty now with a couple year window for these guys). Isn't it cool to find some guys you like playing with who seem to play better than their higher rated counterparts? Always a fun thing in games to have a player suit your play style or just play above their ratings and be able to take a job from like a 95 OVR guy.
I am honored that you took the time to go back and read this little addiction of mine. I makes my heart soar that I'm bringing a team and players back to life from a dynasty I played 17 years ago. It was originally posted on MaddenMania, which no longer exists, so there is no Internet evidence of this dynasty without it being reposted.

Having a combo like Freeman and Johnson keeps things fun and interesting in the current dynasty, which I believe is my third (and last) playing NCAA '14. I'm excited to see where they end up on my all-time lists. I don't try to pump up their stats on purpose, but there are times you can't help but fire the ball to Johnson. There have been games where he doesn't get his first catch until late in the first half and ends up with a solid game.

I never heard about the EA sim engine having a vendetta against certain teams, but it sounds like it's happened to Alabama and USC at times. That's crazy! I want to say there have been past NCAA's where some teams get favored (see Texas Tech in NCAA '07 with three Heisman candidates). I know EA favors dual-threat quarterbacks over drop-back guys who throw for a ton of yards and touchdowns but run for only 100 yards and don't score.

      2025/2010 SEASONS - GAME 2

Vanderbilt receiver Jayden McGowan grabs the game-winning touchdown pass with 1:38 left in the game.

Back-up tight end Derek Malloy catches a touchdown pass with 7:26 left in the game to begin Vanderbilt’s comeback.

Penn State quarterback Christian Veilleux was in full-on robo-QB mode, going 19-for-21
for 262 yards and two touchdowns, but couldn’t lead the offense to points after halftime.

      UNHAPPY VALLEY
Another unheralded WR comes up big
for Vanderbilt in win at Penn State

HAPPY VALLEY — So far, it’s been the wide receivers deeper on Vanderbilt’s depth chart who have been making the biggest plays for the Commodores early in the 2025 season.

Last week, it was freshman Mike Barclay who grabbed three touchdown passes from the No. 5 wide receiving position in a season-opening victory over Coastal Carolina.

On a grander stage in Happy Valley, it was Jayden McGowan who made the biggest catch to give Vanderbilt a 25-21 victory over eighth-ranked Penn State.

McGowan caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Greg Freeman on fourth-and-eight with 1:38 left in the game, just one play after he dropped a third-and-eight pass when he was hit as the ball arrived.

“We liked that play and it just happened to be McGowan who was running the route we thought could work best,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “It’s good to see someone who has been in our program this long and hasn’t had many moments to shine come away with a game-winning touchdown catch.”

McGowan is a 79 OVR senior who didn’t have a stat in any of his first two seasons on the roster. He had 31 catches for 381 yards and one touchdown as a junior, ranking fifth on the team in receiving yardage.

His touchdown catch capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive that consumed 4:30 off the clock.

Vanderbilt trailed 21-10 entering the fourth quarter before back-up tight end Derek Malloy’s 6-yard touchdown catch and 2-point reception with 7:26 left cut the deficit to three points.

Penn State could have created some breathing room by scoring on its next drive, but defensive tackle Terion Sugick blew up a third-down screen pass to Bubba Madison for a 4-yard loss on third down with 6:28 left.

After the Commodores marched down the field to take the lead, they needed a huge defensive stop at the end of the game to emerge victorious.

Penn State converted on fourth-and-18 to stay alive on its final possession. The game ended when quarterback Christian Veilleux the preseason Heisman favorite scrambled and was stopped at the Vanderbilt 5-yard line. The Nittany Lions walked off the field with an “L” and a useless timeout still in their pocket.

Vanderbilt dominated the stats in the first half, outgaining Penn State 224-136 and in first downs by a 15-4 margin, but trailed 21-10 because of three turnovers. One of those turnovers was a Patrick Smith fumble that Curtis Lee returned 77 yards for a score.

Penn State fifth-year senior defensive end Davon Townley was a problem all day, making five tackles for losses.

Seven different Commodores had at least three catches, as Freeman went 36-for-50 for 405 yards, three touchdowns and two picks.

Penn State’s Curtis Lee returns a fumble 77 yards for a touchdown.

      Michigan shuts down run game,
Vandy loses 29-27 at Big House

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — OK, so maybe B-Dawg’s running sliders aren’t so easy after all.

One week after running for 379 yards against lowly Middle Tennessee State, 16th-ranked Michigan brought Vanderbilt’s running game back down to earth in a 29-27 victory over the 23rd-ranked Commodores on Sept. 11, 2010.

Vanderbilt (1-1) ran well early in the game, but wound up with just 59 yards on 26 carries for a 2.3-yard average. Gaston Miller had 22 of his 57 yards on 16 carries on one run in the first half.

Michigan had a whopping 28-2 advantage in pancake blocks.

“In a sick twisted sort of way, I feel pretty good about this outcome,” B-Dawg said. “We definitely don’t have the line and the running backs to be running for 7.6 yards a pop like we did last week. The competition level seems to be more responsible for the disparity from week to week, as is proper.”

If the Commodores could have had any success at all running the ball, they probably would have left the Big Hizzle with a victory. Vanderbilt got out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, with Jared Funk coming off the bench to throw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jason toth with 50 seconds left in the first quarter.

Michigan roared back to score 17 straight points in a 3:14 span late in the first half. Antwan Smith responded by hitting freshman Derrick Brantley with a 19-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone with six seconds left in the half.

Two third-quarter field goals put Michigan ahead 23-17, but another touchdown to close out a quarter gave Vanderbilt a 24-23 edge. Smith threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Toth with 29 seconds left in the third quarter, giving Vanderbilt touchdowns in the final 50 seconds in each of the first three quarters.

Michigan went ahead to stay on a 46-yard pass over the middle from Curtis Wright to tight end Antonio Whitlock with 5:56 remaining. Whitlock caught the ball near linebacker Bryan Kelly, the only defender between him and the end zone. Kelly fell while being controlled by B-Dawg, giving Whitlock an easy path to paydirt.

Vanderbilt moved to Michigan’s 9-yard line, but settled for a 27-yard field goal by Andre Diles with 4:13 left in the game to get within two points. A 49-yard field goal try for Michigan fell short with 2:24 remaining, giving the Commodores one final shot.

Sophomore middle linebacker Terry Davis made the defensive play of the game for Michigan, stuffing Smith on a fourth-and-one sneak at Vanderbilt’s 41-yard line with 1:28 left. Vanderbilt burned a timeout challenging the spot of the ball and didn’t get a favorable call. An 11-yard run by Craig Peterson with 1:17 left on third-and-six put the Wolverines (1-0) in a position to milk the clock.

B-Dawg had hoped to see some real-life Michigan players when he scheduled the Wolverines, but the only one who showed up at all was outside linebacker Quintin Patilla, who had a sack. Patilla, from Flint Carman-Ainsworth High School, was created by B-Dawg and shows up only in his dynasty.

        2025/2010 SEASONS - GAME 3

Vanderbilt linebacker Chris Jackson tackles LSU running back Chad Wallace in the end zone for a safety to open
        the scoring.

Vanderbilt defensive tackle Dan Pendleton gets one of his two sacks of LSU quarterback Quinton Olsen.

        GLITCHED!
Major glitch in game nearly costs
        Vanderbilt in another close victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — There are game glitches that are merely annoying, but then there are game glitches that can cost you a football game for no good reason.

No. 21 Vanderbilt could have been totally screwed over by a horrible glitch on a kickoff midway through the fourth quarter in a 31-26 victory over LSU.

The Tigers had just cut the Commodores’ lead to 31-26 on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Quinton Olsen to Brian Larson with 4:35 remaining in the game.

On the ensuing kickoff, a flag was thrown for a face-masking penalty on the Tigers, which Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg happily accepted.

That’s when the Commodores experienced a WTF moment.

Instead of taking over on offense 15 yards farther up the field following the return, the Commodores found themselves kicking off to the Tigers.

        KICKING OFF!!!

There was nothing B-Dawg could do about it except what any self-respecting gamer would do in this situation. He dropped the game from Heisman to Freshman mode to ensure LSU wouldn’t take advantage of this gift from EA and score a winning touchdown it didn’t earn.

It appeared to work wonders, as Marlen Sewell intercepted a pass on the Tigers’ second play. B-Dawg switched the game back to Heisman mode and the Commodores tried to put the game away.

Instead, Vanderbilt went three-and-out before forcing a three-and-out by the Tigers.

That’s when B-Dawg handed LSU another gift, serving up an interception to Ikaika Harris with 1:26 left in the game on third-and-eight. The Tigers were out of timeouts and a running play would have milked the clock down to about 45 seconds following a punt had the Commodores not converted.

LSU now took over at its own 37 with plenty of time to score the winning touchdown. The defense didn’t allow the Tigers to come within sniffing distance of the goal line, however. After three straight incompletions, defensive tackle Dan Pendleton got his second sack of the game with 1:08 remaining.

Vanderbilt had five sacks, the other three coming from defensive end Justin King. The biggest tackle for loss was by linebacker Chris Jackson, who blew up a run by Chad Wallace in the end zone on third-and-10 with 3:08 left in the first quarter for a safety to open the scoring.

The Commodores are off to a 3-0 start, winning all three games by five points or less.

Antwan Smith sneaks across from one yard out for the winning TD
        with 1:27 left.

Vandy rallies from 13 down in 4th,
beats Ole Miss on TD with 1:27 left

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Vanderbilt just needed to get all its mistakes out of its system.

The 26th-ranked Commodores allowed four sacks in the first half and quarterback Antwan Smith threw three interceptions, as they fell behind by 13 points after three quarters to 35th-ranked Mississippi on Sept. 18, 2010.

Once Vanderbilt got its act together, it was Mississippi’s turn to self-destruct. After getting no sacks and no picks for the first three quarters, the Commodores’ defense got three sacks and two interceptions in the fourth, putting the offense in a position to pull out a thrilling 30-26 come-from-behind victory.

Smith led the comeback. After throwing two touchdown passes to get the Commodores within striking distance, his 1-yard sneak with 1:27 left gave Vanderbilt the victory.

Mississippi had taken a 23-10 lead by scoring 23 straight points after Vanderbilt built a 10-0 lead after one quarter.

“We got really sloppy in the middle quarters,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “We couldn't protect Antwan, then he threw some picks because he was getting happy feet back there. I kept imploring the guys to just hang in there, not to give up and the breaks would eventually go our way.”

Vanderbilt began its comeback on a 38-yard pass from Smith to freshman Derrick Brantley with 7:35 left in the game. Jason Toth tried to give it back, muffing a punt with 6:29 left at Vanderbilt’s 23-yard line.

Mississippi got first-and-goal at the 3-yard line, but two sacks forced the Rebels to settle for a field goal that stretched their lead to 26-17 with 5:09 remaining.

“That stand was huge,” B-Dawg said. “If they get a touchdown, they get four more points and the game momentum would probably have been insurmountable.”

The Commodores got within 26-24 when Smith hit wide-open freshman tight end Darrell James for a 13-yard touchdown with 3:51 left on fourth-and-two out of a goal-line set.

Safety Keith Cunningham then lived up to his impact status, picking off a pass with 3:41 left at Mississippi’s 34-yard line.

The Commodores were content to work for a game-winning field goal. They chose to run on third-and-five, with Clint Turner getting a first down to the 7-yard line on his first carry with 2:11 to go. Smith’s winning touchdown came on third-and-goal from the 1-yard line and capped an eight-play, 34-yard drive.

Freshman Jason Lewis got his first career interception with 53 seconds left and Gaston Miller ran for a first down on third-and-nine with 38 seconds to go to seal the victory.

Mississippi’s Victor Robinson ran 20 times for 193 yards and a touchdown. Robinson’s touchdown was a 95-yard run as time expired in the first half and was the result of a bone-headed move by B-Dawg. B-Dawg called a timeout just to give his defense a chance to perhaps get a fumble recovery, but Robinson made him pay by taking the next run all the way.

“This game makes you pay for dumb moves,” B-Dawg said. “Robinson doesn’t run 95 yards for a touchdown if everything was played according to the book before that play. I got greedy, looking for a fumble, looking to get my defense one more tackle … and I got burned. It’s not the first time that’s happened to me in an EA game. The game will bite you in the butt if you don’t respect it.”

Vanderbilt cornerback John Howse breaks up and fourth-and-one pass early in the game.

Vanderbilt freshman tight end Ryan Jamison snags his first career touchdown catch.

          WHOSE HOWSE?
          John’s Howse! Vandy senior corner
disruptive force in victory over Tide

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The measure of a cornerback is usually determined by interceptions, pass break-ups and minimal damage by opposing wide receivers.

Then there’s John Howse, a fifth-year senior at Vanderbilt.

Howse has always been known for his ability to shoot out like a torpedo on nickel blitzes and blow up plays, going back to his three-sack performance against Central Michigan two years ago.

He’s never graduated to one of the outside cornerback positions, but that’s just fine by Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg, who loves turning Howse loose on corner blitzes.

Howse had a huge all-around performance for the 19th-ranked Commodores in a 35-33 victory over eighth-ranked Alabama on Sept. 20, 2025.

He had three tackles for losses and one sack among his seven total tackles. He also had a diving break-up of a fourth-and-1 pass by Jalen Milroe from the Vanderbilt 21-yard line early in the game.

“You don’t think of your nickel cornerback as a major piece to your defense, but John Howse is as valuable as anyone on that unit,” B-Dawg said. “He makes plays that have an impact on the game, even if it’s not in the traditional way you think of for defensive backs. Every now and then, I have a player who benefits from the scheme in which he’s used. John Howse is that player for us on defense.”

Howse had six sacks and 14 tackles for losses as a sophomore before dropping to one sack and four tackles for losses last year. He had more interceptions as a junior than a sophomore (three to one) and was close in total tackles (51 to 54). He had only one tackle as a redshirt freshman in 2022.

With Greg Freeman throwing for 433 yards and five touchdowns, receiver Michael Johnson had 10 catches for 124 yards and three touchdowns and freshman tight end Ryan Jamison had nine catches for 103 yards and a score. His first career touchdown was a diving effort against a blitz from one yard out to open the scoring.

“Ryan Jamison is going to be a major weapon for us, mark my words,” B-Dawg said. “The tight end position has been an after-thought for us over the years, but Ryan is like having a wide receiver in that position. He’s going to get a lot of mismatches. He’ll be fun to use.”

Vanderbilt had to air it out, because its ground game was brutal. The Commodores had only 35 yards on 25 carries, with only two sacks factoring into that total. Starting running back Patrick Smith had seven yards on 13 carries. His first four runs went for losses.

“I always strive for balance, but it would have been insanity to keep trying to run the ball against those guys,” B-Dawg said. “You stick with what’s working and abandon what isn’t.”

Vanderbilt led 28-17 heading into the fourth quarter. Alabama cut the deficit to 28-26 on a field goal with 5:30 remaining, missing a chance to tie it because Brian Davidson sacked Milroe on a 2-point pass attempt. The Crimson Tide had to settle for a field goal following that touchdown when a third-and-10 screen pass to Camar Wheaton was stopped for a 1-yard gain to the Vanderbilt 13.

Gamerion Carter’s 7-yard touchdown catch from Freeman with 1:17 put the game away. Alabama got a face-saving touchdown with 13 seconds remaining, making it four straight victories by five points or less to begin the season for Vanderbilt.

Dallas Turner, a 97 OVR fifth-year senior outside linebacker, had four tackles for losses, a sack, an interception and a deflection for Alabama.

Derrick Brantley scores on a 47-yard TD pass.

          Smith throws 4 TD passes
          in victory over Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — OK, so it’s only a video game.

Still, beating Notre Dame is always a sweet, sweet thing.

Antwan Smith threw four touchdown passes to lead 24th-ranked Vanderbilt to a 44-41 victory over 27th-ranked Notre Dame in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicates. Notre Dame got two touchdowns in the final 49 seconds, the first coming on a 44-yard interception return when B-Dawg had no business throwing the ball.

“I wasn’t going to schedule Notre Dame until I had a team I felt was capable of beating them,” B-Dawg said. “They’re 1-3 now, but I’m sure they’d still be in the running for a BCS bowl bid if this was real life just because of freakin’ television ratings. They’ll be lucky to play in the Motor City Bowl this year in my dynasty. I love it.”

Smith had one of the best passing performances of his two-year career, going 27-fro-32 for 270 yards, four touchdowns and no picks. Contrast that to 90 OVR Jared Funk, who threw a pick on his only pass of the game.

In four games, Smith is 79-for-117 for 978 yards, 10 touchdowns and four picks. Funk has been abysmal, going 7-for-12 for 81 yards, one touchdown and three picks.

“I guess you can kiss any talk of a quarterback controversy goodbye,” B-Dawg said. “I get the best of both worlds in Antwan Smith. He’s fast and he’s our best passer.”

Notre Dame led 27-20 in the third quarter and took a 27-23 advantage into the fourth. That’s when Smith took over, scoring on a 1-yard run and throwing four-yard touchdown passes to both of his tight ends, Jonathan Massey and Darrell James. All three touchdowns came in a 3:10 span. A fumbled kickoff after the first touchdown set up the second one and James Pressley had a pick after the second touchdown to set up the third.

This should have ended up a 44-27 victory for Vanderbilt, except B-Dawg screwed around trying to get Funk some stats. On Funk’s only pass, William Perry grabbed an interception and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown with 49 seconds left. Notre Dame recovered the onside kick and tacked on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Zach Frazier to Pat Bradford as time expired.

“It pisses me off that I messed around and they got 14 points at the end on us,” B-Dawg said. “Who knows? Those numbers might scare away some of the linebackers we’re recruiting.”

Massey caught 10 passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns, while freshman receiver Derrick Brantley had eight catches for 114 yards and a touchdown. Gaston Miller ran 20 times for 122 yards.

The news wasn’t all good for Vanderbilt, however. The team’s No. 1 cornerback, fifth-year senior Alan Strong, dislocated his elbow and will be out for 10 weeks, meaning he probably wouldn’t return until a bowl game. Strong leads the Commodores with 24 tackles.

            Vanderbilt continually blows up
Army run game in 25-10 victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Nobody had Patrick Smith on their bingo card as the player most likely to rush for 100 yards when Vanderbilt hosted Army on Sept. 27, 2025.

Smith was held to only seven yards on 13 carries in his last game — granted, it was against Alabama, not Army — while the Black Knights entered play averaging 235.7 yards per game to rank 26th in the country.

Of course, Vanderbilt had the nation’s second-ranked rush defense, yielding 67.8 yards per game.

So, against this backdrop, it was Smith who had by far the best day on the ground, running 25 times for 118 yards while also catching three passes for 47 yards and a touchdown.

“Nice game, but let’s see him do this more consistently,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said following the 13th-ranked Commodores’ 25-10 victory over Army. “We really can’t rely on him game in and game out.”

In two of his last three games, Smith has had more carries than rushing yards. He was held to 11 yards on 15 carries at Penn State. He did run 23 times for 105 yards against LSU, a legitimate SEC team.

And as for the vaunted Army option attack?

It was blown up again and again by a Vanderbilt defense that had 22 tackles for losses and five sacks of a quarterback who isn’t used to dropping back to pass.

Quarterback Sam Williams had minus-26 yards on 23 carries and the team as a whole had only 38 yards on 31 carries. Defensive tackle Terion Sugick had four tackles for losses and three sacks. Free safety Jeffrey Ugochukwu, who was used as a spy to contain the option, even had two tackles for losses. Vanderbilt went heavily with a 4-4 Engage 8 defense, using Ugochukwu as a spy and having only two cornerbacks prepared to defend any surprise passes.

“You put yourself at risk with a defense like that, but Army is going to do what Army does, no matter how you line up,” B-Dawg said. “We sent eight guys crashing toward the line of scrimmage and kept Jeffrey position to clean up anything that leaked through.”

The only Black Knight who had success on the ground was Justin Gorman, who had 55 yards on only four carries. He had runs of 31 and 26 yards. But, as B-Dawg discovered during his days at Air Force, Army’s CPU coach does a poor job of going with the hot hand. The Black Knights kept forcing the option keeper with Williams while ignoring Gorman.

The only touchdown Army managed was through the air with only 2:40 left in the game when Williams hit B.J. Robinson with a 5-yard pass.

Star receiver Michael Johnson got Vanderbilt started, catching touchdown passes of 2 and 73 yards in the first quarter. He finished with five catches for 118 yards and two scores.

Greg Freeman threw for all four Vanderbilt touchdowns, the others going to Smith and backup running back Shawn Brooks.

            Vandy knocks off unbeaten NIU
on field goal with 5 seconds left

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Antwan Smith has had better days.

The red-shirt sophomore quarterback threw three interceptions on Oct. 2, 2010, only one less than he’d thrown in Vanderbilt’s first four games combined.

But when it came time to win a game, Smith showed the ability to put everything behind him and get the job done.

Smith completed two passes for 40 yards to get the Commodores quickly down the field and set up a 38-yard field goal by Andre Diles with five seconds left that gave 23rd-ranked Vanderbilt a 23-20 victory over 33rd-ranked and previously unbeaten Northern Illinois.

The Huskies (4-1) had tied the game 20-20 on a 7-yard pass from Billy Lowe to Chris Perry with 27 seconds left. Vanderbilt (4-1) got the ball at its own 39-yard line with 22 seconds left and Smith got them down the field in a hurry, throwing an 11-yard pass to freshman Derrick Brantley, then a 29-yarder to Billy Jones. Jones caught a short pass underneath the coverage on the left side of the field, as Northern Illinois was preoccupied with a streak being run by speedster Jason Toth. Jones caught the ball at the Huskies’ 43 and ran it out of bounds at the 21 with 11 seconds left.

A run into the middle of the field set up the field goal by Diles, who has a 12-mile-per-hour wind at his back. The game registered 615 points on the Greatest Game scale.

“I’m very proud of Antwan,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg. “Check that. I’m very proud of myself. I could have folded after that late touchdown and the three interceptions, but I kept plugging away and got the win. Antwan didn’t do jack. He can’t do anything without me making the reads and the right calls.”

This was a back-and-forth game, with neither team getting more than one score in a row. Vanderbilt would score first and Northern Illinois matched every score, getting two field goals after Commodore field goals and two touchdowns after Vanderbilt touchdowns.

Toth had a huge game, catching five passes for 160 yards and a touchdown. He had 111 YAC, with much of it coming on his 83-yard touchdown catch with 4:27 left in the second quarter. Toth caught a screen pass, got some nice blocks and sprinted down the left sideline.

“You’ve just got to get the ball in Jason’s hands and let his 99 SPD take over,” B-Dawg said.

Junior linebacker Bryan Kelly played perhaps the best game of his career, making 10 tackles, six of which were for losses, with two of them being sacks. He tied the dynasty record for tackles for a loss set by Quavian Lewis at Memphis on Sept. 5, 2009.

The teams combined for 934 total yards and 732 yards through the air.

              TANK JOB?
              B-Dawg handcuffs Vandy’s offense
with new playbook in loss to Mizzou

COLUMBIA, Mo. — B-Dawg may have fallen on his sword in the name of simness when 10th-ranked Vanderbilt traveled to Missouri on Saturday.

(Simness: It’s a word. Look it up.)

The Commodores had won 11 straight games going back to last season. While many of those were nail-biters, it still defies the team’s overall talent to be knocking off the caliber of teams Vanderbilt has beaten with such predictable regularity.

B-Dawg has long maintained that it’s the user’s familiarity and execution of the playbook, not so much talent or sliders, that dictate success in NCAA ’14. Since this game has been out for more than 10 years, he’s fallen in love with certain plays in his created playbook, plays that can often dig him out of trouble.

So, after a 5-0 start to the 2025 season, B-Dawg decided to venture into the unknown and use the “multiple” playbook against Missouri on Oct. 4, 2025.

Let’s just say this was an exercise in frustration that won’t be repeated any time soon.

With the 10th-ranked Commodores pretty much neutered using a book with a lot of Ace formations and snaps from under center that B-Dawg doesn’t prefer, Missouri accepted the gift and came away with a 45-24 victory.

“This game isn’t fun if you’re not running plays you like and you’re just ramming your head into a wall the whole game,” B-Dawg said. “This is a one-and-done exercise. If it means I win every single game for as long as I play this dynasty and I post the most predictable reports on this forum, so be it. I’m not putting myself through that again.”

Vanderbilt quarterback Greg Freeman struggled with the unfamiliar game plan, going 35-for-64 (only 54.7%) for 343 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He tied B-Dawg’s all-time record for pass attempts, first achieved by Eastern Michigan’s Clint Cunningham against Iowa on Oct. 4, 2014 in NCAA ’08). With 12 other attempts from two backups, Vanderbilt aired it out a ridiculous 76 times with little to show for it.

Meanwhile, Missouri quarterback Tyler Macon looked very comfortable running his offense. Macon accounted for six touchdowns, throwing for four and running for two. He was 21-for-29 for 477 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 22.7 yards per completion and 16.4 yards per attempt. He also ran 20 times for 53 yards and two scores.

While the Commodores were playing offense with one arm tied behind their back, it would’ve helped had their receivers CAUGHT THE FRICKIN’ BALL!!! Vanderbilt had eight dropped passes, which included fourth-down plays and sure touchdowns.

Also, with so many passes in the air and B-Dawg clueless where they were going, Missouri defenders had 17 deflections by nine different players.

Somehow, 16 of Vanderbilt’s passes wound up in the hands of star junior receiver Michael Johnson, who got a relatively pedestrian 169 yards and no touchdowns out of all those receptions.

It’s a foregone conclusion Johnson will own every receiving record at Vanderbilt before he’s done. His 237th career catch with 14 seconds left in the first quarter broke the real-life school mark of 236 set by the darling of B-Dawg’s NCAA ’07 dynasty, Earl Bennett, from 2005-07.

              LSU rides plus-5 momentum
              to 58-24 blowout of Vandy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Just when you thought you were safe from plus-five momentum …

Final score: Louisiana State 58, Vanderbilt 24.

Yep, it was a day for frightening flashbacks at Vanderbilt on Oct. 9, 2010.

The 22nd-ranked Commodores were rolled by plus-five momentum routinely in the first few years of this dynasty, but were 14-4 in the last two seasons entering this game, with none of those four losses attributable to overblown EA gimmicks.

However, this game rapidly deteriorated after Vanderbilt got an early 7-3 lead. The 30th-ranked Tigers put up three touchdowns in the final 3:49 of the first half and never let up, as each subsequent touchdown seemed to be preordained by a force greater than the talent on the field.

“It’d been a while since we’ve been on the business end of plus-five momentum,” B-Dawg said. “It’s no fun at all. The only thing that kept my fingers away from the off switch on my PS2 was the fact it was 2:30 a.m. and the last thing I wanted to do was play a game for nothing at that hour. Otherwise, who knows? I might have had a weak moment.”

The momentum feature was in full effect in the third quarter, as Charles Scott broke off touchdown runs of 69, 21 and 50 yards. Scott finished with 257 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries.

“Well, we’ve had our share of pretty big rushing days when we got ahold of momentum,” B-Dawg said. “Nothing like this, though. You give the CPU plus-five momentum and forget about ever stopping a run. We tried everything. Nothing worked.”

Trailing 24-7 at halftime, Vanderbilt was confident it could get back in the game. The Commodores got the kickoff to start the third quarter and the momentum for LSU was down to plus-2 after the teams came back from their locker rooms.

After a quick three-and-out, however, the Tigers got the ball and were back in the end zone just 52 seconds into the third quarter on a 69-yard run by Scott.

The Tigers outscored the Commodores 55-3 during one stretch in the game, with Vanderbilt salvaging some semblance of manhood by scoring two touchdowns in the final 2:09 against LSU’s backups. Vanderbilt mass-subbed, but put most of its starters back in because the second-stringers had absolutely zero chance against plus-five momentum.

Cornerback Kyle Hansbro, beaten early in the game on a 67-yard touchdown catch by Jason Toth, came back to intercept two passes for LSU (5-1).

Heckel to visit Vanderbilt Oct. 23

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Middle linebacker Ulysses Heckel, one of the players most coveted by Vanderbilt, has put the Commodores on his list of three finalists and will visit campus for the Oct. 23 game against South Carolina.

Middle linebacker Manny Spurlock has moved Vanderbilt from No. 2 to No. 1 while cutting his list from eight to five schools. He bumped North Carolina State down to No. 2.

There was no movement among the other four recruits being targeted by Vanderbilt. Outside linebacker Kelly Powers, who was no longer being recruited, has left Vanderbilt off his list of five schools.

Vanderbilt receiver Michael Johnson drops a fourth-and-two pass with 24 seconds left.

Georgia’s Robert Arnold catches a go-ahead touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as Vanderbilt’s safety Jeffrey
                  Ugochukwu whiffs.

                  Oops! He did it again!
Second big drop of Johnson’s career
                  seals Vanderbilt’s loss to Georgia

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Junior wide receiver Michael Johnson is having a record-setting career at Vanderbilt, putting up numbers that will make him one of B-Dawg’s all-time greats before all is said and done.

But while Johnson’s career will be defined by his eye-popping numbers, but it also be defined by some soul-crushing dropped passes in big games.

As a freshman, Johnson dropped a fourth-and-18 pass near the goal line with 27 seconds left, sealing the deal in the Commodores’ 34-28 loss to Alabama in the 2023 SEC championship game.

Johnson dropped a fourth-and-two pass near the sideline from the Georgia 46-yard line with 24 seconds left, killing 16th-ranked Vanderbilt’s comeback bid in a 34-27 loss to the Bulldogs on Oct. 18, 2025.

Vanderbilt was 5-for-5 on fourth downs before Johnson’s drop.

“I am feeling a bit overly sensitive about dropped passes these days,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said four days after Josh Reynolds of his Detroit Lions dropped two crucial passes in the NFC Championship Game. “A receiver has one job and one job only — catch the friggin’ ball! It wasn’t a difficult pass to catch. The defender was out of position and the ball was right there.”

B-Dawg was confident his team would come back and win, because the game was trending in the favor of the offenses during the fourth quarter.

Each team scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and there were three lead changes after Georgia led 19-14 through three quarters.

Vanderbilt took a 20-19 lead on Mike Barclay’s 5-yard touchdown catch on the first play of the fourth quarter. A 2-point run was stopped.

Georgia regained the lead when Robert Arnold burned safety Jeffrey Ugochukwu for a 73-yard touchdown catch with 4:54 left in the game. A 2-point run by Terrence Marquardt gave the Bulldogs a 27-20 lead.

Vanderbilt tied the game on fullback Dylan Betts-Pauley’s 1-yard run on fourth down with 1:31 remaining.

The Bulldogs scored the winning touchdown just 18 seconds later when quarterback Sam Hall scored on a 2-yard run up the middle with 1:13 remaining. A 65-yard pass to Jon Weber was the big play of the three-play, 75-yard drive.

Needing only two yards to keep the ball and its hopes alive, Vanderbilt could have played it safe and thrown a short pass to Barclay out of five-wide Levels, but went for more yards near the sideline to Johnson, who dropped the ball.

Through no fault of his own, it was one of only 11 incompletions in 50 passes for sophomore quarterback Greg Freeman, who was 39-for-50 for 347 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Johnson had nine catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.

The Commodores’ struggles on the ground continued, hence the 50 pass attempts. Starting halfback Patrick Smith had only 34 yards on 13 carries.

Georgia quarterback Sam Hall scores the winning touchdown with 1:13 left.

Vanderbilt halfback Clint Turner (25) has the ball knocked loose near
the goal line by Georgia’s Reshad Jones (10).

                  Georgia scores 27 straight points,
rallies from 10 down to beat Vandy

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Vanderbilt had just lost its second straight game, but coach B-Dawg wasn’t entirely upset.

He wasn’t exactly doing cartwheels, but he did take a measure of satisfaction in his team’s performance following a 33-25 loss to 24th-ranked Georgia on Oct. 16, 2010.

The way B-Dawg sees it, the Commodores stared plus-five momentum straight in the eye … and didn’t blink.

“This game could have completely spiraled out of control like last week’s 58-24 loss to LSU,” B-Dawg said. “I was afraid our defense wouldn’t be able to withstand the onslaught of plus-five momentum, especially playing here between dem hedges. But we did a far better job of managing plus-five momentum than we did last week. I’m very proud of the way our defense battled and didn’t give in.”

Vanderbilt got out to an early 10-0 lead before Georgia scored 27 straight first-half points. Vanderbilt got within 27-17 at halftime on a 15-yard pass from Antwan Smith to Derrick Brantley with 12 seconds left in the first half.

Georgia expanded its lead to 33-17 on two field goals by Ted Hand in the third quarter. Throw in the fact Smith tossed three interceptions, and it didn’t look like Vanderbilt stood a chance.

Yet, the Commodores battled back and were in a position to tie the game in the final minutes.

A 6-yard run by Gaston Miller with 7:23 left made it a 33-23 game. A 2-point pass that would have made it a one-score game was deflected by outside linebacker Eric Jackson.

The Commodores were on the verge of scoring a touchdown on a pass over the middle from Smith to backup running back Clint Turner, but Turner was drilled at the 1-yard line by fifth-year senior free safety Reshad Jones and coughed up the ball with 4:16 left in the game.

Georgia recovered the ball at its own 2-yard line. Vanderbilt smelled blood and brought a heavy blitz, with linebacker Bryan Kelly breaking through and sacking Matthew Stafford on an ill-advised pass attempt from his own end zone for a safety with 4:14 left in the game. It was now a one-possession game with Georgia up by eight points.

Both teams followed up by going three-and-out. Vanderbilt had speedy receiver Jason Toth in one-on-one coverage for a deep pass, but Smith was hit as he threw and the wobbler wound up in the hands of Georgie strong safety Joel Hughes with 2:35 left. A third-and-two pass to NaDerris Ward for a first down with 1:36 left and two straight runs for first downs allowed the Bulldogs to let the clock expire on one last punt.

Smith started out hot, going 8-for-8 for 67 yards and a touchdown as Vanderbilt bolted to a 10-0 lead. Georgia tied it in rapid-fire fashion. Ward caught a 72-yard play-action streak for a touchdown on Georgia’s first play following a 5-yard pass from Smith to tight end Jonathan Masssey. Barry Sanders fumbled the ensuing kickoff, leading to a 27-yard field goal by Hand just 47 seconds after Ward’s touchdown.

“At that point, you become really concerned the game is going to quickly be out of your hands,” B-Dawg said. “It kind of got that way for a while, but we regrouped to a certain extent. We can definitely build some confidence over the way we played in the second half.”

James Pressley had two interceptions for Vanderbilt. Bryan Kelly, a junior middle linebacker, continued to lobby for 2011 impact status by making 10 tackles, five for losses, and two sacks.

Fritz will also visit Vandy Oct. 28

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Ulysses Heckel will have some company when he visits Vanderbilt Oct. 23 for the game against South Carolina.

Heckel, a four-star middle linebacker, had already set up a visit on that date. Now he’ll be joined by defensive tackle Craig Fritz of Trussville, Ala., who has the Commodores No. 1 on a list that’s been trimmed to three schools.

Meanwhile, outside linebacker Shannon Tolbert of Lithia Springs, Ga. has moved the Commodores to No. 1 on his five-team list. There was no other change in player interest this week.

That was insane and ticked me off. I guess I'll never accept a penalty on a kick return again (not that they happen often).

I'm having fun with this season, being involved in so many close games. I wound up quitting my Western Michigan dynasty about 8-9 years ago because I was just winning too many blowouts. Even if I go 13-1 every year, I'm happy if a high percentage of the games are down to the wire.

                      Vandy capitalizes on mismatch
                      in victory over South Carolina

COLOMBIA, S.C. — Poor Derrick Barrow.

The South Carolina outside linebacker has had much better days than the one he experienced against Vanderbilt on Nov. 1, 2025.

Not only did Barrow get posterized on two touchdowns during a 49-28 loss to the 23rd-ranked Commodores, but he dropped a pass on a fake punt in the third quarter on a trick play that could have got South Carolina back in the game.

The mismatch against Barrow was first exploited when running back Patrick Smith caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Greg Freeman on a wheel route with 6:51 left in the second quarter. Smith was one-on-one with Barrow, who dropped into coverage but never turned around to see the ball coming.

Barrow was also in the poster of wide receiver Michael Johnson on a touchdown catch in the third quarter.

But the biggest gaffe for Barrow came when South Carolina ran a fake punt on fourth-and-four from its own 49-yard line. B-Dawg fully expected the fake, because CPU teams in the SEC seem to run it with alarming frequency, probably because he turned up the coaching settings for most SEC teams to “aggressive” so they would run hurry-up offenses to challenge him.

Anyway, even though Vanderbilt was in a 1-5-2 prowl man defense instead of setting up a punt return, South Carolina attempted the fake anyway. The Gamecocks would have pulled it off had a wide-open Barrow not dropped a pass from punter Jason Richardson downfield with 5:28 left in the third.

As much fun as it is to pick on a CPU player in this report, the biggest play of the game was made by Vanderbilt defensive back Kendall Butler.

South Carolina appeared to be on the verge of taking a 10-7 lead when Butler intercepted a second-and-goal pass from the 5-yard line and returned it 42 yards with 8:20 left in the second quarter. That set up the touchdown pass to Smith.

Freeman continued to tear it up for the Commodores, going 32-for-41 for 408 yards and five touchdowns. Much of his yardage went to players who aren’t wide receivers, with tight end Ryan Jamison making eight catches for 119 yards, Smith four for 64 yards and two scores, backup tight end Derek Malloy three catches for 22 yards and a touchdown, and even fullback Dylan Betts-Pauley one catch for eight yards.

Vanderbilt continues to lean upon its passing attack because Smith continues to struggle on the ground, gaining only 52 yards on 19 carries.

“I can hate on a fake football player in my dynasty all I want, but bottom line is I need to be better at the sticks when running the ball,” B-Dawg said.

South Carolina was much more effective on the ground against the No. 1 rush defense in the country, running 35 times for 198 yards. Those yards included yards lost on seven sacks.

Kendall Butler intercepts a pass from the 5-yard line.

Brent Trice makes two big fourth-down plays in the final four minutes, sacking Chris Brown on
fourth-and-two (left) and knocking down a pass on fourth-and-13.

                      Quarterback runs for 135 yards,
Trice’s 2 big plays preserve win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Brent Trice technically isn’t a starter for Vanderbilt’s football team, but he’s still seeing plenty of playing time.

Sophomore Keith Cunningham tops the depth chart at strong safety, even though Trice has an 84-82 edge in OVR.

Still, Trice has found his way onto the field in formation subs and made two of the biggest defensive plays of the season for the 35th-ranked Commodores in a 33-20 victory over 41st-ranked South Carolina on Oct. 23, 2010.

Trice sacked Chris Brown on a fourth-and-two play-action pass from Vanderbilt’s 14-yard line with 3:31 left in the game. The Gamecocks (3-4) got the ball back, only to fail on fourth-and-13 from their own 47 when Trice knocked down a pass.

“I feel a special attachment to Brent, because he’s one of the 13 true freshmen I personally created going into this dynasty,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “I feel like I have to start Keith in most situations because he’s faster and had a great freshman season last year. I recruited Keith, so there’s an attachment there, too. I guess I just have this unnatural affection for my players that should warrant professional help.”

Trice’s two big plays ensured that a record-breaking touchdown run by quarterback Antwan Smith would hold up as the winning score.

The Commodores (5-3) blew a 17-0 lead and were locked in a 20-20 tie when Smith put his name in the record books.

Smith was told to take off and run if South Carolina was in man coverage and followed the two receivers on the left side who were running routes toward the middle of the field. The Gamecocks (3-4) were indeed in man and vacated the left side of the field, giving Smith a huge lane for an 83-yard touchdown run with 5:55 left in the game.

It was not only the longest run by a Vanderbilt player in this dynasty, but the longest ever by a B-Dawg quarterback in any video game. The previous longest run by a B-Dawg quarterback was 75 yards by Michigan’s Antonio Haines against Boston College in the 2004 season of NCAA 2004. The Vanderbilt record under B-Dawg was 77 yards by halfback Cassen Jackson-Garrison against Colorado State on Sept. 8, 2007.

“You live for moments like those,” B-Dawg said. “You play hundreds and hundreds of games, then you do something you’ve never done before. That’s a huge rush. I expected Antwan to get caught from behind, but he just had too much open space down the left side.”

Smith, who has 87 SPD, ran eight times for 135 yards and two touchdowns. His other touchdown came on a 9-yard run to open the scoring with 4:38 left in the first quarter. Smith also got it done through the air, going 20-for-31 for 170 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

“Antwan doesn’t want to be known as just a mobile quarterback, but a complete quarterback,” B-Dawg said. “We do everything in our offense to make sure he is a well-rounded quarterback. Today was one of those days where we needed him to use his legs, because South Carolina just shut us down after our early lead.”

While rolling to a 17-0 lead, Vanderbilt had a 37-7 lead in total plays, 183-23 in total offense and 98:39 to 1:35 in time of possession. South Carolina cut the margin to 17-3 by halftime, then tied it with 4:25 left in the third quarter when receiver Jesse Stevens took a lateral pass from Chris Brown and scored on what went down as a 63-yard run.

The teams traded field goals before Smith put Vanderbilt ahead on his record-setting run.

The Commodores have long memories and wanted to rub it in after Trice stopped a fourth-and-13 pass with 1:56 left. Smith ran 30 yards for a first down on fourth-and-two with 1:08 to go and Vanderbilt made sure to get the ball into the end zone one more time on a 1-yard pass from Smith to freshman tight end Darrell James with 33 seconds left. The Commodores even with for two points, but the pass was knocked away.

“We will always do everything we can to run up the score on South Carolina after the crap they pulled on us in the early years of this dynasty,” B-Dawg said. “When we were up 17-0, I was licking my chops. We’ll put a big number on them someday, mark my words.”

South Carolina played with quarterback Andrew Bobo, who was suspended.

                      Vanderbilt gets two commitments

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — It turned out that it was a good idea for Vanderbilt to bring two recruiting prospects to last Saturday’s game against South Carolina.

The Commodores won the game 33-20, then got a bonus when middle linebacker Ulysses Heckel of Valley Station, Ky. and defensive tackle Craig Fritz of Trussville, Ala. made verbal commitments to Vanderbilt.

Heckel is listed as the No. 1 middle linebacker in the nation, while Fritz is listed No. 10 among defensive tackles. Those numbers, however, could change greatly when players are ranked during offseason recruiting. Both are four-star prospects.

“I really hope Heckel is No. 1 or somewhere in the top five, because we could really use a stud middle linebacker,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “Defensive tackle is a weakness for us, so we really hope Craig pans out to his rating, as well.”

Travis Davis of Forest, Miss., the fifth-rated middle linebacker in the country, has set up a visit for the Nov. 6 game against Florida. The outcome of that game could determine who wins the recruiting battle for Davis, who lists Vanderbilt No. 1, Florida No. 2 and Auburn No. 3.

Darrell Myrick (OLB-3), Shannon Tolbert (OLB-4) and Manny Spurlock (MLB-13) all have Vanderbilt No. 1 on their five-team lists. B-Dawg is giving 25-percent attention toward each player.

I'm having fun with this season, being involved in so many close games. I wound up quitting my Western Michigan dynasty about 8-9 years ago because I was just winning too many blowouts. Even if I go 13-1 every year, I'm happy if a high percentage of the games are down to the wire.
You are playing on Heisman right?

What do your sliders look like?

Ive always played on All-American with adjusted sliders, but after 10 years of playing the game, it has become rather easy at times.

I'm playing Heisman mode, first time I've ever done it. I started doing it with my Air Force dynasty, the one I ran just before this one. At first, it was hard, but then you get used to what plays will work and the speed of the game.

Sliders are roughly 50-50 user and CPU. The one I know I lowered for sure was the INT sliders for both user and CPU. I had 3-4 picks my first game in Heisman mode and it looked like a trend, so I lowered mine to about 25. I'm a total pick machine passing the ball, so I lowered the CPU to about 15-20. I tinker from time to time to address any issues I'm seeing.

You raise a great point: We've had this same game for 10 years. When does that ever happen? We know our plays inside and out. It's pretty hard to lose now.

Both Vandy teams still churning and burning, just waiting for that breakout season when we see an SEC title run in the old NCAA 07 dynasty!

Agreed about the playcalling, I've tended to try to make my playbook custom to where I like the scheme that is built, but then use the "Ask Corso" feature for basically all of my plays to give me that feel where my OC is the one calling the plays; helps keeping me from trying to run money plays all game long. Always fun to try and take a game that is so familiar to us and keep turning it into a challenge!

I would agree with moose on this one. Use your custom playbook, but utilize the "Ask Corso" feature to simulate it's your OC calling the offense.

Maybe allow yourself three overrides in a game as a house rule for it.
