Vanderbilt freshman Michael Johnson drops a fourth-and-18 pass near the goal line with 27 seconds left.

Alabama tight end Jalen Smith clearly has his right toe out of bounds, but replay officials ruled this a touchdown
anyway. The $EC is corrupt!

Alabama linebacker Chris Braswell sacks Vanderbilt quarterback Mike Wright on third-and-10 with 45 seconds left.
FRESHMAN MOMENT
Dropped pass near goal line costs Vandy
in SEC Championship loss to Alabama
THE ATL — Many special moments lie ahead for Vanderbilt receiver Michael Johnson if his freshman year is any indication.
But in the biggest moment of the season, Johnson looked every bit like a freshman who got blinded by the bright lights.
Johnson dropped a fourth-and-18 pass near the goal line with 27 seconds left in the game, sealing 19th-ranked Vanderbilt’s fate in a 34-28 loss to fourth-ranked Alabama in the SEC Championship game on Dec. 2, 2023.
Even if Johnson caught the ball and was tackled just outside the end zone, the Commodores likely would have had a first down. They converted third-and-12 to reach Alabama’s 11-yard line with 1:15 remaining, but an 8-yard sack by linebacker Chris Braswell with 45 seconds remaining put Vanderbilt in that fourth-and-18 situation.
Targeting Johnson on the biggest play of the game made sense. After all, he has 70 catches for 1,120 yards and eight touchdowns this season, putting him in a position to break a bunch of records over the next three years should he stay in college.
“I can’t be too mad at Michael, because he’s been incredible for us this season,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “He took a chance on us when he could’ve gone to a lot more big-time programs. I’m excited to see what he does over the next three seasons. He is definitely my new shiny toy.
“Still, you’ve got to catch that ball, son!!!”
It looked like all hope was lost for Vanderbilt when a controversial replay review granted Alabama a 7-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Young to tight end Jalen Smith with 6:17 left in the game, putting the Crimson Tide ahead 31-21.
It was initially ruled no catch, but was reversed and called a touchdown on replay, even though it was crystal clear that Smith’s right toe was out of bounds.
“Somebody from the SEC got in the ear piece of one of the replay officials and reminded them how much money Alabama generates for the league,” B-Dawg said. “The most corrupt league in college sports hit a new low, even for them.”
Knowing the league was against them, the Commodores managed to keep fighting. They cut the lead to 31-28 on a 10-yard pass from Mike Wright to Gamerion Carter with 3:48 left.
Alabama had another chance to bury the Commodores on its next drive, quickly moving the ball to the Vanderbilt 9-yard line. Middle linebacker Ethan Barr got a 2-yard sack, making it third-and-goal from the 11.
Smith once again caught a pass out of bounds with 2:41 left, but this time the replay officials chose not to screw over the Commodores. Alabama settled for a field goal that kept the Commodores within six points.
“I’m so used to coming back and winning in those situations that it’s a shock when I don’t,” B-Dawg said. “We’ll be back. This is just the first of many trips to The ATL for Vanderbilt.”
Alabama running back Jace McClellan came into the game ranked No. 3 on the Heisman hype list, but didn’t get a single carry because he was overtaken on the depth chart by Trey Sanders. Sanders is 93 OVR, while McClellan is 92 OVR. Sanders ran 10 times for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Sanders has run 197 times for 1,256 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, while McClellan has 204 carries for 1,217 yards and 18 scores.
Young, who would be playing in the NFL if the offseason decisions in NCAA ’14 were more realistic, went 24-for-32 for 357 yards and three touchdowns. On the season, he’s thrown 35 touchdowns and only one pick.

Vanderbilt cornerback John Howse whiffs on a touchdown run by Alabama’s Bryce Young.

Gators edge Auburn for SEC crown
THE ATL (AP) — The demise of the Florida Gators was greatly exaggerated.
Florida went 4-8 last season, finishing last behind Vanderbilt in the Southeastern Conference East Division with a 1-7 record.
When you have Florida’s tradition and recruiting base, however, you don’t stay down for long.
The Gators are back on top of the SEC, beating ninth-ranked Auburn 28-23 in the conference championship game at the Georgia Dome.
Florida came into the game unranked at 8-4, but that will change.
The Gators got out to a 21-7 lead in the second quarter and never trailed. A 4-yard run by quarterback Mario Fannin with 2:18 left got Auburn within 28-23, but the Tigers got no closer.
Florida’s Kestahn Moore ran 15 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
Western stays unbeaten by romping
past Akron in MAC championship game
DETROIT (AP) — A 13-0 record isn’t good enough to dance with the big boys if you’re a member of the Mid-American Conference.
Western Michigan will take a perfect record into its bowl game after rolling to a 41-16 victory over 25th-ranked Akron in the MAC championship game at Ford Field.
However, that bowl game will be the GMAC Bowl Dec. 20 in Mobile, Ala., not one of the lucrative BCS bowl games.
There are only two other unbeaten teams in college football, with only one playing for the national championship Jan. 8 in Miami. Ohio State will take a 12-0 record into the title game against USC (11-1). Louisville is 12-0, but will face Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.
Louis Delmas got Western started with an 81-yard interception return for a touchdown. Former Goodrich High School star Kirk Elsworth caught touchdown passes of 25 and 36 yards from Tim Hiller, who finished 21-for-30 for 283 yards, five touchdowns and no picks.
Elsworth ran 18 times for 128 yards and caught three passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns.
Akron is 10-3.
