2023/2008 SEASONS - CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

Vanderbilt freshman Michael Johnson drops a fourth-and-18 pass near the goal line with 27 seconds left.

Alabama tight end Jalen Smith clearly has his right toe out of bounds, but replay officials ruled this a touchdown
    anyway. The $EC is corrupt!

Alabama linebacker Chris Braswell sacks Vanderbilt quarterback Mike Wright on third-and-10 with 45 seconds left.

    FRESHMAN MOMENT
Dropped pass near goal line costs Vandy
in SEC Championship loss to Alabama

THE ATL — Many special moments lie ahead for Vanderbilt receiver Michael Johnson if his freshman year is any indication.

But in the biggest moment of the season, Johnson looked every bit like a freshman who got blinded by the bright lights.

Johnson dropped a fourth-and-18 pass near the goal line with 27 seconds left in the game, sealing 19th-ranked Vanderbilt’s fate in a 34-28 loss to fourth-ranked Alabama in the SEC Championship game on Dec. 2, 2023.

Even if Johnson caught the ball and was tackled just outside the end zone, the Commodores likely would have had a first down. They converted third-and-12 to reach Alabama’s 11-yard line with 1:15 remaining, but an 8-yard sack by linebacker Chris Braswell with 45 seconds remaining put Vanderbilt in that fourth-and-18 situation.

Targeting Johnson on the biggest play of the game made sense. After all, he has 70 catches for 1,120 yards and eight touchdowns this season, putting him in a position to break a bunch of records over the next three years should he stay in college.

“I can’t be too mad at Michael, because he’s been incredible for us this season,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “He took a chance on us when he could’ve gone to a lot more big-time programs. I’m excited to see what he does over the next three seasons. He is definitely my new shiny toy.

“Still, you’ve got to catch that ball, son!!!”

It looked like all hope was lost for Vanderbilt when a controversial replay review granted Alabama a 7-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Young to tight end Jalen Smith with 6:17 left in the game, putting the Crimson Tide ahead 31-21.

It was initially ruled no catch, but was reversed and called a touchdown on replay, even though it was crystal clear that Smith’s right toe was out of bounds.

“Somebody from the SEC got in the ear piece of one of the replay officials and reminded them how much money Alabama generates for the league,” B-Dawg said. “The most corrupt league in college sports hit a new low, even for them.”

Knowing the league was against them, the Commodores managed to keep fighting. They cut the lead to 31-28 on a 10-yard pass from Mike Wright to Gamerion Carter with 3:48 left.

Alabama had another chance to bury the Commodores on its next drive, quickly moving the ball to the Vanderbilt 9-yard line. Middle linebacker Ethan Barr got a 2-yard sack, making it third-and-goal from the 11.

Smith once again caught a pass out of bounds with 2:41 left, but this time the replay officials chose not to screw over the Commodores. Alabama settled for a field goal that kept the Commodores within six points.

“I’m so used to coming back and winning in those situations that it’s a shock when I don’t,” B-Dawg said. “We’ll be back. This is just the first of many trips to The ATL for Vanderbilt.”

Alabama running back Jace McClellan came into the game ranked No. 3 on the Heisman hype list, but didn’t get a single carry because he was overtaken on the depth chart by Trey Sanders. Sanders is 93 OVR, while McClellan is 92 OVR. Sanders ran 10 times for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Sanders has run 197 times for 1,256 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, while McClellan has 204 carries for 1,217 yards and 18 scores.

Young, who would be playing in the NFL if the offseason decisions in NCAA ’14 were more realistic, went 24-for-32 for 357 yards and three touchdowns. On the season, he’s thrown 35 touchdowns and only one pick.

Gators edge Auburn for SEC crown

THE ATL (AP) — The demise of the Florida Gators was greatly exaggerated.

Florida went 4-8 last season, finishing last behind Vanderbilt in the Southeastern Conference East Division with a 1-7 record.

When you have Florida’s tradition and recruiting base, however, you don’t stay down for long.

The Gators are back on top of the SEC, beating ninth-ranked Auburn 28-23 in the conference championship game at the Georgia Dome.

Florida came into the game unranked at 8-4, but that will change.

The Gators got out to a 21-7 lead in the second quarter and never trailed. A 4-yard run by quarterback Mario Fannin with 2:18 left got Auburn within 28-23, but the Tigers got no closer.

Florida’s Kestahn Moore ran 15 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

    Western stays unbeaten by romping
past Akron in MAC championship game

DETROIT (AP) — A 13-0 record isn’t good enough to dance with the big boys if you’re a member of the Mid-American Conference.

Western Michigan will take a perfect record into its bowl game after rolling to a 41-16 victory over 25th-ranked Akron in the MAC championship game at Ford Field.

However, that bowl game will be the GMAC Bowl Dec. 20 in Mobile, Ala., not one of the lucrative BCS bowl games.

There are only two other unbeaten teams in college football, with only one playing for the national championship Jan. 8 in Miami. Ohio State will take a 12-0 record into the title game against USC (11-1). Louisville is 12-0, but will face Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.

Louis Delmas got Western started with an 81-yard interception return for a touchdown. Former Goodrich High School star Kirk Elsworth caught touchdown passes of 25 and 36 yards from Tim Hiller, who finished 21-for-30 for 283 yards, five touchdowns and no picks.

Elsworth ran 18 times for 128 yards and caught three passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns.

    Akron is 10-3.

Dang BDawg thats a tough way to lose. Clearly out of bounds. Better luck next year though.

In my playthroughs of NCAA 14, Bama is actually middle of the road by year 3 and stays that way for majority of the time. Its baffling really.

I was more upset about the dropped pass, because that was within our control, than the botched replay. But I guess that's realistic, too, because no sport screws up replay reviews more than college football. I swear they don't care what the call on the field actually was; they view the replay like there wasn't a call made by the referee on the field. So, they overturn calls with the sketchiest of evidence the call was wrong.

I am actually three years ahead of where I'm posting. I've been more interested in playing than posting. (It doesn't help that this forum seems to be dead.) Alabama is still strong, but just had a recruiting class ranked in the 70s heading into the 2027 season, so it will be interesting to see if that begins a decline for the Crimson Tide.

Thanks for reading and checking in!

I hear you on the forum being dead. Whilst I don't post for the interaction solely, it's always nice to know people are reading, and it gives you that little boost of motivation to do these writeups. I don't know of anywhere else for this kind of thing, I think we might be the last of a dying breed.

FWIW, I think it's seasonal. The basketball dynasties are getting 5-10 dynasties updated per day and you'll see a boost when:
            a) Madden comes out
            b) Football starts
            c) the new NCAA game comes out

Whenever I feel like a subforum is dead, I check the other ones (baseball, hockey, football, bball, etc) and I usually am comforted by the activity happening there. Maybe try venturing to other sports dynasties?

There are other forums that do this stuff, but I've always enjoyed OS the most.

I'm reading, even if I'm not always commenting.

I agree with Studbuckets though, it's likely just a slow time of year for the football dynasties subforum. I'm guessing as we get closer to the start of the CFB and NFL seasons things will pick up.

I can't imagine playing a dynasty and not posting. And I can't imagine posting without the level of detail to which I'm accustomed (some guys are far more detailed than I am, some a little less). I hope to start getting chunks of updates done now that high school sports are done in my state.

I've tried baseball and hockey dynasties before, but I enjoy college football so much more. Only 12-14 games per season, the intrigue of recruiting, etc. I don't sim games, so a 162-game baseball season or 82-game hockey season seems laborious.

Thanks for following my little obsession. Looking forward to the start of college football. Now that the Stanley Cup Final is done, it's a dead spot in the sports calendar for me as a Tigers fan. Maybe this is the year Michigan seriously contends for a natty and the Lions actually win a division. One can dream.

That's about the gist of it lol. Moved back to Michigan in 2010, then back to Chicago in 2018 and been here since.

2023/2008 SEASONS: COLLEGE FOOTBALL AWARDS SHOW

Vanderbilt’s Anfernee Orji won the 2023 Bednarik and Butkus awards.

                    Vanderbilt sweeps defensive awards

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — For a team that has allowed 28 points per game, Vanderbilt defenders did shockingly well at the 2023 College Football Awards Show.

The Commodores took home all five defensive awards, with four players picking up hardware. They also had the obligatory Returner of the Year in junior running back James Ziglor.

Senior outside linebacker Anfernee Orji won the Bednarik and Butkus awards, senior middle linebacker Ethan Barr won the Nagurski, senior defensive end Nate Clifton won the Lombardi and senior strong safety Jack Barton won the Thorpe.

Orji has 107 tackles, including 16 for losses and two sacks. He’s intercepted one pass.

Barr has 99 tackles, 25 for losses and five for sacks. He has one interception.

Clifton has 13 sacks and 18 tackles for losses among his 32 tackles.

Barton has 58 tackles and has scored two defensive touchdowns.

“EA is gonna do what EA is gonna do,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “While we appreciate the love, there’s no way our defense should have that many award winners. We were a trainwreck at times on defense. But it looks like user-controlled teams have a big advantage when it comes to racking up defensive stats across the board.”

                    Vierling, Q-Lew named second-team All-America

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Vanderbilt center Bradley Vierling quietly had an outstanding season for an otherwise dismal offensive line.

While the Commodores allowed 50 sacks, the most in the nation, Vierling was rock slid. The red-shirt junir allowed only two sacks while tying for 11th in the country with 30 pancakes, earning him a spot on the 2008 second-team All-America squad.

He is joined on the second team by outside linebacker Quavian Lewis. Lewis thrived with the impact circle under his feet, making 83 tackles, 19 for losses, six sacks, two interceptions and nine forced fumbles.

Vierling and Lewis are also on the All-Southeastern Conference first team, along with record-setting receiver Earl Bennett. Bennett caught 99 passes for 1,823 yards and nine touchdowns. He finished his brilliant three-year run with B-Dawg with 245 catches for 5,002 yards and 34 touchdowns — all school records.

                      2023/2008 SEASONS: HEISMAN TROPHY WINNERS

                      Still in college, Deuce Vaughn
                      wins 2023 Heisman Trophy

NEW YORK — In real life, Deuce Vaughn is already out of here, having been selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys in an emotional scene.

His father, Chris, is a veteran scout with the Cowboys who made the call telling his son he was drafted by Dallas. The two have even rode together for the first mini-camps.

                      Cool stuff.

In NCAA ’14, players with pro talent seem to stick around longer than they should. That enabled cyber Deuce to take home the 2023 Heisman Trophy as a senior running back for Kansas State.

Vaughn received 380 first-place votes and 1,725 points, winning easily over Michigan State running back Jordon Simmons, who has had a so-so career in real life with 506 rushing yards through three seasons.

The 99 OVR Vaughn ran 239 times for 1,543 yards and 23 touchdowns, while catching 23 passes for 288 yards and four scores.

                      Louisville receiver wins Heisman

NEW YORK (AP) — When it came down to it, it was all about wins and touchdowns.

Louisville senior Chris Vaughn’s receiving numbers pale in comparison to those put up by Vanderbilt senior Earl Bennett, except in two key areas: Vaughn’s team is undefeated and he got into the end zone a whole lot more.

Vaughn is the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, beating USC quarterback Mark Sanchez by 265 voting points. Vaughn got 287 first-place votes, while Sanchez got 219.

Texas quarterback Jevan Snead was third, Nebraska halfback Marlon Lucky fourth and Michigan halfback Kevin Grady fifth.

Vaughn caught 79 passes for 1,273 yards and 19 touchdowns. Bennett had 99 catches for 1,823 yards and only nine touchdowns.

Yes, but I’m not very good at defense. It seems like every quarterback throws for 80% and 350-plus yards against me. I like having every stat be something that occurred with me playing the game. I once accidentally simmed and saved a game. It destroyed my mind!

                              2023 BOWL GAME (NCAA '14)

Vanderbilt QB Mike Wright threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns against Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl.

Vanderbilt’s Logan Kyle caught two touchdown passes against Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl.

                              Ending on high note

in Commodores’ bowl win over Wisconsin

TAMPA, Fla. — If you had to guess which player led Vanderbilt in receiving touchdowns during the 2023 season, you’d be excused if you didn’t answer Logan Kyle.

Kyle was only fourth on the team in total catches and receiving yards, overlooked in a group that included two 1,000-yard receivers. He didn’t have a catch longer than 26 yards all season.

Yet, by grabbing two scoring strikes in a 42-24 victory over Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1, 2024, Kyle finished with a team-leading nine touchdown receptions.

Kyle finished with 57 catches for 640 yards, used primarily as a possession receiver in third-and-medium situations. Will Sheppard led the team with 76 catches, but only four went to the house. Freshman sensation Michael Johnson had a team-high 1,137 receiving yards on 74 catches, scoring eight times.

Of course, Johnson would have finished with nine touchdown catches himself had he not dropped what would have been a game-winning pass against Alabama in the SEC championship game.

                              But we digress.

“When you need to move the chains or you need someone to hang on to a short, hard pass in the end zone, I don’t care about flash and dash,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “Give me someone I can rely on to hang on to the ball in critical situations. We are a methodical, chain-moving team. While it would be nice to blow the top off defenses, that isn’t our modus operandi.”

Kyle is an 85 OVR senior who dropped only six passes this season. By contrast, Johnson dropped 13 and Sheppard 11. Granted, they were targeted more often, but their ratio of catches to drops isn’t as solid as Kyle’s.

Kyle’s first big catch was a 15-yarder on fourth-and-six with 12 seconds left in the first half. Kyle then finished off the touchdown drive by getting wide open on a wheel route to the left and scoring from 15 yards out with five seconds left in the half.

He then scored Vanderbilt’s fourth straight touchdown after trailing 14-7 on a 10-yard slant route with 3:03 left in the third quarter. The Commodores had five straight touchdown drives after falling behind early.

It was the final game for three seniors who began this dynasty as promising sophomores.

Wright finished his career in this dynasty 959-for-1,478 for 11,682 yards, 75 touchdowns and 40 interceptions. He ran 397 times for 1,892 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Middle linebacker Ethan Barr finished with 259 tackles, 57 for losses, 9.5 sacks and two interceptions.

Outside linebacker Anfernee Orji ended his career with 241 tackles, 39 for losses, six sacks and four interceptions.

“Those guys were the key building blocks of what we anticipate with be a national championship program,” B-Dawg said. “They elevated the expectations for a Vanderbilt football player. They will be remembered when we’re hoisting a crystal football in the future.”

Running back James Ziglor catches a 10-yard touchdown pass.

C.J. Stroud finally wins big one,
leads Ohio State to national title

A glorious bit of reality that is seeping into this dynasty report is the fact C.J. Stroud couldn’t beat Michigan in real life in two years as Ohio State’s starting quarterback.

But cyber C.J. proved he could win the big one, leading the Buckeyes to a 44-33 victory over The U in the 2023 national championship game.

Stroud’s numbers were rather pedestrian for someone who led an offense to 44 points, as he went 14-for-26 for 193 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Stroud did have a 32-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring with 10 seconds left in the game, one of the play-by-play oddities you’ll see in EA’s simmed games, considering most teams would be taking a knee at that point.

Ohio State trailed 14-10 late in the first half before Treveyon Henderson’s 4-yard run with 24 seconds left in the second quarter put the Buckeyes up to stay, 17-14.

The Buckeyes expanded their lead to 38-27 with 14:44 left in the game on an 11-yard pass from Stroud to Miyan Williams. The U cut the lead to 38-33 with 3:45 remaining on a 4-yard pass from Tyler Van Dyk(e) to Key’Shawn Smith before Stroud’s long run in the final seconds sealed it.

Van Dyk(e) was 14-for-28 for 233 yards, four touchdowns and no picks for the U.

Ohio State finished 13-1, its only loss being a 35-21 decision to Alabama in the fifth game of the season. The Buckeyes beat Michigan State, which finished No. 2 in the final rankings, 45-35 in their ninth game.

Western Michigan is only perfect team in ’08

MIAMI (AP) — Mario Danelo’s 36-yard field goal with five seconds left gave USC the national championship with a 41-38 victory over Ohio State, thus making unheralded Western Michigan the only undefeated team in the 2008 season.

Ohio State came into the game with a 12-0 record. Louisville, which was 12-0 after the regular season, lost 28-27 to Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Western Michigan completed a 14-0 season with a 28-7 victory over Central Florida in the GMAC Bowl, but finished only 13th in the coaches’ poll and 15th in The Associated Press rankings.

The national championship game featured a wild fourth quarter in which both teams scored 17 points. Ohio State fought back to tie it 38-38 on a 40-yard field goal by Ryan Pretorious with 1:29 left in the game, but the Trojans (12-1) marched down the field to set up Danelo’s game-winner.

Both quarterback had big days. USC’s Mark Sanchez was 18-for-32 for 262 yards, four touchdowns and one pick. Ohio State’s Todd Boeckman was 17-for-29 for 280 yards, five touchdowns and no picks.

Brian Hartline caught three passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns, while Chris Wells ran 27 times for 175 yards for the Buckeyes.
