Turnovers Doom 4th Q Comeback In Clemson Win

LEFT - After not throwing an interception last week, Miles Toomer tossed three in the 1st half alone as Georgia struggle to find room to operate against Clemson.
CENTER - Cole Soto continues to be the needle mover for the Bulldogs early, seen here giving UGA a late 4th Q lead after trailing for much of the game.
RIGHT - Jeremy Gesicki was cool and collected after the Bulldogs took the lead with 1:33 remaining, orchestrating a 5 play drive going 4/5 with 71 passing yards to retie the game.
Charlotte, NC. - In a game where head coach Nash Savage warned flat play would lead to defeat, the #3 Georgia Bulldogs came out lifeless in the first half and paid the price, falling 42–35 to #16 Clemson in a rainy Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium. Despite a furious second-half rally and three touchdown catches by breakout star Cole Soto, the Bulldogs’ slow start and five interceptions between two quarterbacks proved too much to overcome.
The game opened with promise for Georgia, as an early third-down conversion appeared to set the tone. But a holding penalty wiped out the gain, a dropped interception by TE Lonnie Banks followed, and kicker Quincey Toone came up short on a 47-yard field goal attempt. That would be a sign of things to come in a first half filled with missed opportunities and self-inflicted wounds.
Clemson coughed the ball up on its first possession, only for Georgia QB Miles Toomer to return the favor with an underthrown interception on a crossing route—one of several that haunted the redshirt freshman throughout the night. Clemson’s Jeremiah Murphy capped the ensuing drive with a 2-yard touchdown, but Toomer briefly responded with a deep 78-yard bomb to Soto to tie it up at 7.
Unfortunately for Georgia, the momentum wouldn’t last. Clemson responded with another grinding touchdown drive from Murphy, then took full advantage of Toomer’s second interception, as quarterback Jeremy Gesicki found Deon Penton for an 8-yard touchdown. A third pick led to another score, this time Gesicki keeping it himself from 10 yards out to push the lead to 28–7.
Toomer showed some late-half resilience, connecting with Lonnie Banks on a slot fade that set up a 1-yard Kalen Hurt plunge to cut the deficit to 28–14 before halftime. But by then, the damage was largely done.
The third quarter was a defensive stalemate, with both teams trading punts until Georgia came alive in the fourth. Toomer connected with Soto again, this time on a 14-yard score to make it 28–21. A defensive stop gave Georgia a chance to tie it, but Toomer’s night ended on a costly fourth interception—his second attempt at a jump ball that Clemson made him pay for.
With Toomer benched, true freshman DaShawn Salako entered and immediately provided a spark, ripping off a 21-yard scramble and later tying the game with a 4-yard touchdown to Soto—his third of the night. Another Georgia stop gave Salako the ball again, and the rookie delivered. Big completions to Banks and Soto set up another short touchdown run from Hurt, giving Georgia its first lead at 35–28 with just 1:33 to go.
But Clemson answered. Gesicki drove the Tigers 71 yards in under a minute, finishing with a 25-yard strike to Tye Chin to tie it at 35–35 with under a minute left. Salako’s poise finally wavered, as an underthrown crossing route was intercepted by Clemson corner Raijon Ali. Georgia allowed a touchdown in an attempt to preserve time for a last gasp, but Salako’s final throw—his second interception—sealed the game.
“We came out flat once again and got our teeth kicked in,” Coach Savage admitted after the loss. “I’m proud of the guys for fighting back, but we’ve got to show more resiliency on both sides of the ball earlier in games so we aren’t clawing for a victory come the 4th quarter.”
When asked whether Toomer or Salako would start Georgia’s next game in two weeks at Miami, Savage declined to commit. “That’s still a ways away. We’ll see how practice goes this week.”
It was a tough weekend all around for Savage’s inner circle, as Ball State head coach Kadin Semonza also suffered his first loss, falling 34–24 to Oregon. Cardinals QB Juan Franco struggled with four turnovers and five sacks, raising questions about whether Emeka Kikaha could get a shot in the upcoming rivalry matchup with Northern Illinois.
For Georgia, however, all eyes are on the quarterback position—and whether this talented but inconsistent squad can find its identity before the season slips away.

I'm also probably going to start Zach Gaskin next game. Kalen Hurt had the biggest improvement in the offseason, so I gave him a chance after he filled in when Gaskin was injured last year. But Gaskin was steady all of last season spelling Velasco, so we're going to see if he can give us a spark in the back field.Comment

LEFT - Miles Toomer and Cole Soto were cooking early with a pair of touchdown passes to give Georgia a 21-7 lead.
CENTER - Then the interceptions started with two to end the 2nd Q, setting up 10 points for the Canes, then another in the 3rd ending his days.
RIGHT - Salako was efficient and kept the Georgia offense moving with both his arms and legs, leading Georgia to 10 4th Q points to stave off the Hurricanes comeback hopes.
Miami, FL. - On a humid Saturday night in Miami, the #7 Georgia Bulldogs rode a dominant second quarter and a poised performance by freshman quarterback DaShawn Salako to edge out the #20 Miami Hurricanes, 31-23. While Georgia improved to 2-1 on the season, questions still swirl around their quarterback situation as Miles Toomer’s up-and-down performance once again forced head coach Nash Savage to make a mid-game change.
The game opened with both teams exchanging early punts, but Miami struck first with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Orlando Ogletree to Tony Swayne late in the opening quarter. The Bulldogs responded with an offensive explosion in the second, led by Toomer, who tossed three touchdown passes on consecutive drives. He connected with Cole Soto from 8 yards out to start the second quarter, then found tight end Lonnie Banks for a short score before launching a 41-yard bomb to Soto again. In that stretch, Toomer looked every bit the star Georgia hoped for, going 10-of-12 for 140 yards and three touchdowns.
But just as quickly as he caught fire, Toomer cooled off. His final four drives ended with three interceptions and just one completion, allowing Miami to claw back into the game. Hurricanes kicker Rafael Stitser converted a pair of field goals, including a booming 50-yarder at the halftime buzzer, while Ogletree added an 11-yard touchdown strike to Tobias Ring off a short field. Georgia still held a narrow 21-20 lead at the break, but their offensive momentum was clearly fading.
Enter DaShawn Salako. Taking over midway through the third quarter, the true freshman brought a steadying presence to Georgia’s offense. After a scoreless third, Salako opened the fourth with an 8-play drive capped by a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jon Amerson. Miami added a field goal to cut the lead to 28-23, but Salako’s poise on an 11-play drive—including a critical 4th-and-3 conversion—set up a Quincey Toone 34-yard field goal to extend the lead to eight with just over a minute left.
Ogletree, who briefly exited in the second quarter with an injury, had one last chance to tie the game but struggled with accuracy. Miami reached Georgia’s 13-yard line, but on 4th-and-7, a fingertip deflection by Georgia cornerback Oscar Allen derailed the final pass attempt, sealing the Bulldogs’ win.
After the game, Coach Savage praised Salako’s composure. “Hard Rock was voted one of the toughest places to play, and he looked like a fifth-year senior out there,” Savage said. Still, Savage was brutally honest about the team’s inconsistencies. “We’ve got to clean up the mistakes on both sides of the ball… and for the life of me I can’t figure out why our corners suddenly can’t cover the broadside of a barn.”
When asked about what lead to Toomer’s sharp decline after his hot start, Savage deadpanned with a Joe Mazzula-esque dead-eye stare, “If I knew that, we would have addressed it.”
Georgia enters a bye week with time to regroup and, hopefully, settle on a quarterback before opening SEC play in Week 5 at Ole Miss.
Meanwhile, Ball State rebounded in a big way. After a rough opening loss to Oregon, the Cardinals crushed Northern Illinois and followed that up with a stunning 56-21 demolition of Texas in Austin. QB Juan Franco bounced back from eight turnovers in his first two games to throw for 448 yards and four touchdowns on 22-of-25 passing, while adding a rushing score. Head coach Kadin Semonza praised the junior: “This is the play we expected from Juan. If he keeps the mistakes down, we can really make some noise this year.”

UGA Walks-Off Rebels With 2PT Conversion In 1st OT
HC Nash Savage decided he'd had enough of the Rebels this afternoon, calling game with a gutsy 2PT conversion call despite being in the 1st OT to walk-off the Rebels in Oxford.

LEFT - Freshman QB DaShawn Salako nearly lost the Bulldogs the game with this underthrown deep ball, despite Sam Mangold having 5 yards on the DB, but the Dawgs defense held firm to give UGA one last shot.
CENTER - CB Anthony Stack joined the starting lineup after the opening touchdown by Ole Miss and immediately paid dividends after jumping the curl route and returning the gift 102 yards for the touchdown.
RIGHT - One play after a costly Salako fumbled, freshman QB Joe Martinek found Ciante Coons between defenders for a beautiful 32 yard touchdown pass to give Ole Miss the lead.
Oxford, MS. - In his first career start, true freshman quarterback DaShawn Salako delivered a rollercoaster performance full of mistakes, magic, and ultimately a game-winning moment, leading #5 Georgia to a heart-pounding 43-42 overtime win over Ole Miss in Oxford. The Bulldogs, now 3-1, leaned on a devastating ground game and gutsy coaching decisions from head coach Nash Savage to survive a 518-yard passing barrage from Rebels QB Joe Martinek.
The game opened with fireworks, as Ole Miss struck first on a 51-yard bomb from Martinek to Angelo Boger, torching Georgia CB Logan Baldridge. The play marked the fourth long touchdown allowed by Baldridge this season, and it would be his last of the night—Savage benched him immediately, later admitting the leash is growing shorter with each busted coverage.
Salako responded by leading a 12-play, run-heavy drive capped with a 7-yard keeper to tie the score at 7, one of his three rushing touchdowns on the day. After another Martinek touchdown—this time a 7-yarder to George Westbrook—Salako again answered, guiding a 14-play drive ending with a 1-yard plunge.
The defining moment of the first half came on defense. With Ole Miss driving late in the second quarter, sophomore CB Anthony Stack, Baldridge’s replacement, jumped a curl route and raced 102 yards for a pick-six, flipping momentum and giving Georgia a 21-14 lead. A red-zone interception thrown by Salako later in the half kept the Rebels within striking distance, but it was the Dawgs who held a 21-14 edge at halftime.
After a tense third quarter featuring only a 17-yard Rebel field goal, Georgia extended its lead to 28-17 on a 1-yard Rudy Gaskin touchdown. But Ole Miss wouldn’t go away. A third-down conversion by reserve tight end Ty Snow, followed by a weaving 12-yard TD from Walt McMahon and successful two-point try, brought the Rebels within three.
Salako then fumbled while trying to fight for a first down, and Ole Miss capitalized on the very next play with a 32-yard Martinek strike to Ciante Coons to take a 32-28 lead. Another Salako interception—his second of the day—threatened to break the Bulldogs’ comeback hopes, but the defense forced a timely three-and-out, giving the freshman one more shot.
He didn’t flinch. A 15-yard scramble opened a 6-play drive, including another 20-yard run and a 17-yard touchdown strike to Cole Soto. Though Savage was frustrated the team scored too quickly, leaving time on the clock, his concerns proved valid when Martinek led Ole Miss into field goal range, tying the game at 35 with a 24-yard boot.
In overtime, Ole Miss struck first again as Martinek connected with Boger for their second score of the night. But Salako, unfazed, went 3-for-3 before darting into the end zone from five yards out to cut the deficit to one.
Rather than kick the extra point, Savage made a gutsy call—go for two, and the win.
With the Rebels’ defense spread wide expecting a pass, Georgia handed the ball directly to Rudy Gaskin on a wildcat snap. The sophomore blasted through a crease in the middle, muscled through a tackler, and extended the ball across the plane—game over.
“At some point you get tired of watching your team get dog walked up and down the field,” Savage said postgame. “We had the hot hand offensively, and I wasn’t going to let one bad bounce lose us that game.”
Savage also didn’t hold back when addressing the state of his defense, hinting at further personnel shakeups beyond Baldridge’s benching. “The pass rush isn’t getting home, the secondary isn’t covering anyone. I’ll keep trying new guys until we figure it out.”
Despite the win, Georgia remains a team with lingering issues, especially on the back end of the defense. But reinforcements are on the way, albeit next season. This week, Georgia secured commitments from five-star CB Trevor Felix and DE Edward Harvin, both top-20 national prospects. Four-star ATHs Zhaire Hood and Alex Bulluck also committed, projecting as future impact players at QB and HB respectively.
Next up for Georgia: a trip to Knoxville to face the Tennessee Volunteers in what promises to be another hostile SEC road test.
Meanwhile, Ball State (3-1) enjoyed a much-needed bye after dismantling rival Miami (OH) 45-17 behind a sharp performance from resurgent QB Juan Franco.

LEFT - Thomas Johns cut back upfield and sparked what would be a 24 point 4th Q for the Vols in a wild ending after Georgia built a 31-10 lead.
CENTER - Despite giving up 432 passing yards, the Dawgs defense had their best showing of the season with an interception on the opening drive and 9 total sacks on the afternoon.
RIGHT - Two touchdown passes and a recovered onside kick wasn't enough for Timmy Edmunds to earn his 2nd career victory over Savage, falling just short of the stunning comeback.
Knoxville, TN. - One week after head coach Nash Savage promised defensive changes, Georgia delivered—sort of. While the Bulldogs gave up 432 total yards and 24 fourth-quarter points, a revamped unit racked up nine sacks and opened the game with an interception en route to a 48-34 road win over Tennessee. The victory moved Georgia to 4-1 on the season, while the reeling Volunteers dropped to 2-4.
The Bulldogs started fast, with true freshman QB DaShawn Salako leading a methodical opening drive that ended in a 7-yard touchdown strike to Sam Mangold. The defense backed it up immediately with a sack on third down and a pick by Oscar Allen, setting the tone early. Tennessee would respond with a tying drive of their own, and after Salako was intercepted inside the red zone on the next series, the teams seemed headed for a shootout. But Georgia quickly bounced back behind the legs of Zach Gaskin, who powered in from three yards out, and a Quincey Toone field goal sent Georgia into the locker room with a 17-10 lead—after a sack of Vols QB Timmy Edmunds on the final play of the half kept Tennessee from attempting a potential field goal.
Injuries piled up for Georgia as Salako briefly left the game in the third quarter, WR Cole Soto played sporadically, and HB Rudy Gaskin suffered a season-ending torn pectoral. Still, the Bulldogs leaned on their ground game and trench dominance to stay in control. Zach Gaskin added his second touchdown to open the second half, and Salako capped a grueling 14-play drive with a 2-yard TD run to extend the lead to 31-10 early in the fourth quarter.
That’s when all hell broke loose.
Tennessee’s Thomas Johns returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, igniting a late surge. The Vols poured in 24 fourth-quarter points, highlighted by big plays including a 28-yard TD pass to Jamal Jones, a 77-yard bomb to Kyrie Wells, and a successful onside kick recovery with under two minutes to go. But Salako kept the Georgia offense humming, answering each Tennessee score with points of his own, including a 27-yard TD pass to Lonnie Banks and a final 39-yard touchdown burst by backup Kalen Hurt after recovering Tennessee’s third onside attempt of the game—this one unsuccessful.
Despite the shootout scoreline, the Bulldogs’ defense was quietly disruptive all afternoon. Inserted into the starting lineup, LB Oscar Souza and pass-rush specialist DE Erick Land wreaked havoc. Land led a relentless front that finished with nine sacks, and the unit’s early dominance gave Georgia just enough cushion to withstand Tennessee’s late fireworks.
Coach Savage praised the increased defensive effort. “You can see guys are fighting for their jobs,” he said. “We’re not perfect on the back end, but we were on the verge of a dominant game if not for a few huge plays. The sacks were big.”
Georgia’s 289-yard rushing day and Salako’s poise under pressure helped overcome not only Tennessee’s fourth-quarter barrage but a laundry list of injuries. The Bulldogs now return to Athens to regroup and heal up before hosting an upstart Mississippi State squad at Sanford Stadium. Rudy Gaskin will be a major absence moving forward, but the depth of Georgia’s run game and Salako’s dual-threat ability offer hope for continued offensive success.
On the recruiting front, Georgia picked up major commitments from HB Marco Droogsma (No. 9 overall), brother of current DE George Droogsma, as well as the 13th-ranked LB Andy MacKenzie and 204th-ranked TE Brian Office.
Meanwhile, Ball State opened Big 12 play with a 34-14 win over Oklahoma State, riding another efficient outing from Juan Franco (25-for-30, 297 yards, 3 TDs passing; 70 rushing yards, 1 TD) to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Seems like the move to the SEC is giving you a bigger challenge every week.. It could be that it seems like your getting inconsistent QB play that is factoring in or do you also think slider changes and the SEC is just giving you better games?Comment

Defensively is driving me crazy. I'm getting solid pass rush, but until the last game the QB was just getting the ball out way to quick to even rush the throw. Part of that is on the secondary, they just aren't sticking with anyone. The moves I made worked somewhat against Tennessee until the 4th Q, but we'll see if it was just a flash in the pan or we'll get consistent coverage. And it doesn't help they are all zone corners and I prefer to play man, so play calling probably isn't the best eitherComment

Ball State HC Kadin Semonza Joins The Pat McAfee Show
Pat McAfee: LAAADIES AND GENTLEMEN—this man right here needs no intro… but he’s gettin’ one anyway! A two-time NATIONAL CHAMP, a TWO-TIME Heisman winner, and now officially the undisputed KING of Muncie, Indiana… Head Coach of Ball State, KADIN SEMONZA!
Coach, welcome to the show, baby! We’ve had your predecessor on here, we’ve talked about you a whole bunch… but this is your debut, huh?
Kadin Semonza: Appreciate it, Pat. Coach Savage did warn me you come out swingin’ with these intros. Gotta say—you lived up to the hype.
Pat McAfee: Dang, right! Now let’s get right into it—you led your alma mater to a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in your very first year as head coach! That’s a freakin’ movie script, Kadin. AND you did it going toe-to-toe with your old squad, Syracuse! What was that like, man?
Kadin Semonza: Yeah, it was something special. Getting the chance to lead Ball State, my alma mater, and take 'em to the top in Year One—it’s what you dream about when you get into coaching. I stepped into a program that was already close—they’d just been to the Natty. I just tried to help us take that final step. And Syracuse… man, that’s where I really cut my teeth. So facing them? A little full circle. But I felt ready. Coach Savage built a strong foundation, and I was just grateful to show what I could do.
Pat McAfee: Alright—now I’ve been waiting a FULL YEAR to ask you this next one. What the heck happened at Syracuse?! When Savage took the Georgia job, every sign pointed to YOU taking over. I mean, I was ready to bet the McAfee ranch on it! Then outta nowhere, you pop up at Ball State! What gives?!
Kadin Semonza: Yeah, that was... complicated. Coach Savage gave me a heads up before the news broke. Told me he was recommending me for the Syracuse job. Meanwhile, Jeff Mitchell—the Ball State AD—had already reached out. The door was cracked open.
But then Syracuse dropped the ball. First round of interviews comes and... I wasn’t even in it. Savage worked the phones, got me a last-minute interview, but at that point? I was already out. That wasn't the process I wanted to be part of. So I turned it down and left that same day.
Pat McAfee: Well DANG. I thought I was ready for whatever you were gonna say… but I was NOT ready for that.
Kadin Semonza: Yeah. And just to be clear—Coach Stoops ending up in Baton Rouge after I committed to Ball State? Total coincidence. I was ready to be the OC and roll with it. Didn’t need the title—just wanted to come home and build.
Pat McAfee: So THAT explains the spicy postgame handshake between you and Coach Nixon. But hey, moving on from hurt feelings—you guys took that tough loss to Oregon, your first as head coach, and bounced back with FOUR straight wins. And Juan Franco has been ballin’ out after a rocky start. What did you see in camp that made you go with him over Emeka Kikaha, who had started before and was a former 5-star guy?
Kadin Semonza: Juan's just got it, man. Some things you can't coach—his poise, his feel for the game. He used his time last year to soak everything in, came to camp laser-focused, and won that job fair and square. Emeka’s a great talent, no doubt—but Juan showed from Day One he could take us all the way. And you’re seeing it now—back-to-back 350-yard games, multiple touchdowns. He’s settling in.
Pat McAfee: That being said… do you expect Emeka to hit the portal this offseason?
Kadin Semonza: We haven’t had that talk yet—it’s a long season. But look, I’ve seen this story before. Tay took over for Emeka a couple years ago and led us to a title. Back at Syracuse, Jumaane Cox replaced Dennis Seri and won it all. But if something like that doesn't happen? Yeah, I’d expect Emeka to move on. And if he does, he’ll have our full support. One year left to prove himself, and I’m all for guys doing what’s best for their future.
Pat McAfee: So how do you manage that? You’ve got these high-caliber recruits—like Emeka—who may’ve been promised the world by a previous regime, and now they’re fighting for their spots?
Kadin Semonza: I’ve lived it. When Coach Savage took over at Ball State, he made it crystal clear—he wasn’t honoring any past promises. 1-star, 5-star, walk-on—it didn’t matter. If you produced, you played. That’s how I coach, too. I don’t promise anyone anything except an opportunity to earn it. Potential’s great, but results? That’s what decides who’s on the field.
Pat McAfee: A lotta people bring up your age—you’re just 31, one of the youngest head coaches in the country. Do you think that gives you an edge when you’re out there recruiting?
Kadin Semonza: It helps, sure. Being able to relate to guys off the field goes a long way. But more than my age, I think my track record speaks louder. Players want to win. They want development. I’ve been fortunate to experience both, and I think that resonates.
Pat McAfee: Fairly successful, huh? Kadin—you won TWO Heismans, man! You and Archie Griffin are the only dudes who’ve ever done that. You’re more than “fairly” successful, my friend!
Kadin Semonza: [laughs] Alright, alright—you got me. Let’s just go with “successful” from here on out.
Pat McAfee: Deal! Now before we go to commercial, last question—and it’s a BIG one. We saw Kadin vs Syracuse, with some fire behind that matchup we definitely didn’t know about… but what the people REALLY want? Kadin vs Savage. When’s that mentor vs. protégé showdown goin’ down?
Kadin Semonza: If it happens, it’ll be on the biggest stage. Natty vibes. You didn’t see Savage go up against Ball State again until it mattered—and honestly, I’d prefer it that way. No gimmicks, no fluff. Just winner takes all.
Pat McAfee: You heard it here first, folks! My dream 2034 national title matchup is officially Ball State vs Georgia, and I’ll be watchin’ with popcorn and a foam finger. Coach Semonza, thank you for joining us—and good luck defending that title!Comment
