    Game Notes
Bloomington, IN – Curt Cignetti and the No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers are out to prove last season’s impressive 11-2 record was no fluke. They opened the season with five straight wins but stumbled last week in a disappointing loss to Minnesota.

Junior quarterback Tayven Jackson’s three interceptions put undue pressure on Indiana’s defense, resulting in the most points they’ve allowed this season. Before the Minnesota setback, the Hoosiers’ defense—ranked ninth nationally in points allowed—had only given up more than 17 points once, in a 39-31 win over Northwestern. That victory, too, was marred by Jackson’s two interceptions, underscoring the team’s reliance on its defense to overcome offensive miscues.

Indiana’s Achilles heel, however, is its pass defense, which ranks 77th nationally. This could be a major concern against a high-powered Ball State offense led by sophomore quarterback Kadin Semonza. The Cardinals are seventh in the nation in passing offense and rank second in both points per game and total yardage, posing a significant challenge for the Hoosiers as they look to avoid a two-game skid.

On the other side, Ball State’s defense has struggled mightily since a strong showing against Notre Dame in Week 1. The Cardinals have allowed at least four touchdowns in all but one game, relying heavily on turnovers to generate stops. Unfortunately for Ball State, those turnovers have been inconsistent, leaving their defense vulnerable.

Indiana enters as the clear favorite, but after witnessing Ball State’s resilience against Notre Dame, an upset in Bloomington wouldn’t be nearly as surprising as in seasons past.

I will pile on support for the Comeback Cards name. Thought that was a cool headline, also bro.. let's talk about your reporting. Really in-depth. Kind of taught me that is how to do it as far as reporting the other games, stat leaders etc.. but I know for me personally I'd never get through a season. To be a reader of this production - great. Also, you said previously somewhere you live in the AK? I need to know, who is everyone's favorite sports team up there? Seattle? Or is it really just a pick one that has the best uniforms situation because nobody is close enough to feel like a hometown pick. Just curious.. think it's awesome you live there, would love to visit that state one day

Thanks man, I think it was the St. Louis Cardinals I first heard that with, or maybe Arizona lol who knows. But I found it fitting thanks to our late game heroics this season.

I try and do longer updates for the meaningful or exciting games and shorter ones for the lopsided ones like vs Eastern Michigan, but that isn't always for everyone. Report the games however works for you, the last thing you want is to try and "conform" to a type of reporting and not enjoy it anymore. For example, I love the depth that bayers put into his dynasty, he would do full pre-season previews of each time in his conference with indepth analysis and break down the top prospects of each recruiting cycle, etc. etc. but I know personally if I went that deep into it I would lose my drive to keep going lol. I love writing updates, but the game is my favorite part. And I can't play games and report them later, I've tried that in the past and all of a sudden find myself three games past where I was and dreading getting caught up. So I write the reports right after the games, or the next day if its late already.

And yep, born and raise in AK. Lots of people like the Seattle based teams, but there are a ton of people that move here for the military that bring their own fandom and others just pick a team for each sport. I started off liking the Steelers as a kid just because of the uniform and then when I got into baseball I started rooting for the Sox just cause my Dad is a Yankees fan (Because the Goldpanners baseball team in AK used to have a lot of MLBers come through and the ones he liked all ended up on the Yankees in the 70s i believe). When I started liking basketball I just kept in Boston with the Celtics, also loved 'Toine.

It was frustrating in the first half, then once we were able to pull in close in the 3rd and get a few stops I really started feeling like we had a chance.

Going from the talent I had at USC defensively to Ball State has been.....a rude awakening lol. We struggle for huge stretches and have a very hard time stopping the passing game if we aren't getting interceptions. We get to the QB on occasion, but not frequent enough to be a threat. I've tried mixing up all of the coverages and schemes I can and still get the same result. It's just going to be that way until the talent increases unfortunately, as you'll see when the Indiana game gets posted shortly

RIGHT - Semonza had the worst performance of the season with 1 touchdown to three interceptions as the Ball State's "Nitro" offense struggled to get out of gear

Bloomington, IN. - After Ball State’s impressive 5-game win streak, including a near upset of Notre Dame in Week 1, many expected the Cardinals to give Indiana a tough fight. However, the Hoosiers had other plans, as head coach Curt Cignetti revealed postgame that the pregame chatter fueled his team’s determination to prove they weren’t a one-year wonder.

Indiana backed up their coach’s words with a dominant first half, jumping out to a 31-0 lead. The Hoosiers' offense was flawless, scoring on all five first-half possessions. Quarterback Tayven Jackson rebounded spectacularly from his three-interception performance against Minnesota, completing 25 of 29 passes for 354 yards and four touchdowns in just the first half.

Ball State struggled mightily out of the gate. The Cardinals didn’t record their first first down until midway through the second quarter, already trailing 17-0. Despite reaching Indiana territory on consecutive drives late in the half, the Cardinals failed to capitalize, turning the ball over on downs and throwing an interception to end their best scoring chances before halftime.

While Ball State’s defense showed signs of life in the second half with three interceptions of Jackson, the Cardinals’ own offensive struggles proved too much to overcome. Quarterback Kadin Semonza added two more interceptions, including a third-quarter pick-six, sealing the Cardinals’ fate.

Late in the game, Ball State managed two touchdowns as head coach Nash Savage kept his starters in, likely to build momentum for the coming weeks. After the game, Coach Savage acknowledged the loss as a humbling moment for his team but expressed optimism about their resilience moving forward.

“We got our a** handed to us today, no doubt,” the first-year coach admitted. “But you know what they say—it’s not how hard you fall, but how you get up.”

Jackson finished the game with a stellar 34-for-43 passing line, amassing 462 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. For Ball State, Semonza struggled, completing just 13 of 28 passes for 195 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.

The Cardinals will look to regroup as they head into the "Red Bird Rivalry" against Miami (OH) next week, hoping to bounce back from this tough defeat.

              Game Notes
Oxford, OH. - The Miami Redhawks and Ball State Cardinals both share a red bird mascot, hence the "Red Bird Rivalry", but that is the extent of the similarities between the teams.

Ball State relies on their 4th ranked offense and plethora of speed on the offensive side of the ball to simply out score opponents, often out of necessity thanks to their defense that ranks in the bottom 3rd in the FBS.

Miami on the other hand, uses their 30th ranked overall defense to win close, concise victories with only their two losses coming by a result of greater than 11 points.

Before Ball State went into Bloomington and completely laid an egg, odds would likely have them snapping the Redhawks 5 game winning streak in the rivalry. Now? Semonza and the "Comeback Cards" will have to reignite a fan base that has seen a late season collapse more than a few times. The game also carries significant merit for a potential MAC CCG berth for the South division, as Ball State is currently in 1st place with a perfect 4-0 conference record, opposed to the Redhawks who are sitting at 4-1.

My brief hiatus from the boards also must have coincided with the end of your USC dynasty, so I'm sorry I wasn't able to follow that very well, but I am with this! Seems like you have a good season going on so far - haven't had enough juice to keep up with the Power 4/5/whatever teams, but everyone else at your level you've been able to beat. The portal addition of Nyck Harbor has been immense for what you're looking to do on offense.

Nice to see you checking in! We played Notre Dame pretty well which surprised me, but Indiana really took it to us. Which is to be expected this early in the dynasty, so while frustrating playing the actual game it makes sense from a realism standpoint.

And yes grabbing Harbor has been huge. I'm' using Tennessee's PB with a bunch of air raid and spread plays sprinkled in, so having speed at WR really opens everything up. I've noticed that early they'll try and play him over the top wih a safety, so that opens up the middle and running lanes then once they start creeping up he'll toast the CB. Then its just a matter of him catching it...he does lead the FBS in drops

LEFT - Redhawks QB Henry Hesson avoid the back breaking turnovers, but was only able to throw this early touchdown as Ball State controlled the 1st half.
CENTER - Kadin Semonza was able to find Nyck Harbor deep twice as the dynamic duo exploited weak coverage by the Redahwks.
RIGHT - Jordan Brunson punished the Cardinals defense with 79 yards on just 13 carries, breaking 8 tackles in the process and scoring a late touchdown.

Oxford, OH. - After a dismal offensive showing in their loss to Indiana, the Ball State Cardinals roared back with a dominant 52-21 victory over Miami (OH), racking up 323 yards and a 31-7 lead by halftime.

Quarterback Kadin Semonza set the tone early with a 61-yard touchdown run on the opening drive, followed by a 66-yard touchdown pass to Nyck Harbor on the first play of the second possession. The Cardinals scored on their first five drives, overwhelming Miami's defense.

While the Redhawks moved the ball effectively in the first half with 174 total yards, they struggled to convert opportunities into points, managing just one touchdown. A failed 4th-and-1 attempt at Ball State's 23-yard line on the opening drive set the tone for their inefficiency.

The second half saw more explosive plays from Ball State, including Qian Magwood's 60-yard touchdown run and Harbor’s second score on a 44-yard catch. Miami added two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but Ball State sealed the win with a final touchdown pass from Semonza to senior Tanner Koziol after a questionable onside kick attempt by the Redhawks.

“It’s a rivalry game, but onside kicking while trailing by three touchdowns? Come on,” Coach Nash Savage said postgame.

The victory snapped Miami's five-game winning streak in the rivalry and marked Ball State’s largest margin of victory in the series since 2019. Semonza finished with four touchdown passes, while Harbor and Magwood both contributed multiple scores.

With the win, Ball State takes sole control of the MAC South at 5-0 and holds the tiebreaker over second-place Miami. The Cardinals return home next week to face Ohio, aiming to remain undefeated in conference play.

                        Game Notes
Muncie, IN. - The Ohio Bobcats snapped a 3 game losing streak with their 24-14 win over Akron last week, but after playing a front loaded schedule are resigned to playing the spoiler role with their final two games coming against the South divisions 1st and 2nd teams, Ball State and Miami.

Ball State bounced back in resounding fashion last week after their drubbing to Indiana, putting together an impressive 52-21 victory over the rival Redhawks. Ball State has been perfect in MAC play this season and needs to win just two of their final four contests to win the South division thanks to their tie breaker over Miami.

Expect Kadin Semonza and the Cardinals #1 ranked offense to continue their assault on the MAC with another dazzling performance.

Dude what is going on with Boise State. Maybe I am wrong but I thought at one point they were 3-0 and ranked like #8. now they are 4-4 and 1-4 in Pac-12 play? Did someone get hurt or are what.

Also your season is going about how I thought it would.. Your team is to talented not to score points and win MAC games, but really any 1-2* team from MAC, SunBelt, CUSA, even American probably should be beating teams from the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, ACC, ect.. at least unless its a true upset..

They had a really weird schedule, they played ND week 0 then were off weeks 1, 2, and 3. Maddux got hurt in Week 7 to Washington State. Malachi's been in and while he's putting up stats the efficiency isn't there and that may be why they're struggling.
                            Week 0 W vs ND 49-42
                            Week 4 W vs Houston 35-21
                            Week 5 W vs App State 42-28

Week 7 L Washington State 27-17 *Maddux hurt midway*
                            Week 8 W Stanford 38-24
Week 9 L Washington 42-31 *Nelson threw 4 TDs but all after trailing by 28 at the half*
                            Week 10 L Colorado 31-23

They do play BYU, Utah, and both Arizona's to finish the scheudle so if they can win out and get some luck with a few more losses by BYU they can still rep the Pac-12 Central, but a loss to BYU this week and their CCG hopes are toast.

Qian Magwood eclipsed the 100 yard mark before the 1st half, but the endzone eluded the former WR until a 3 touchdowns flood in the 4th Q.

LEFT - Ohio QB Callum Wither completely missed CB Blair Schonhorst camping in the flat and the JR made him play with a pick six
CENTER - Covering both Nyck Harbor and Philip Onwualu is tough....especially when you leave a singular cornerback on an island with the duo. Onwualu would come through with his 2nd TD of the day thanks to the miscue
RIGHT - Kadin Semonza called his own number on a QB power off a fake jet sweep and delivered to give Ball State a 28-7 lead with zeros on the 1st half clock.

Muncie, IN. - Ball State continued its remarkable dominance in Mid-American Conference play with a commanding 56-14 win over Ohio, fueled by a relentless rushing attack and a stout defensive performance. The Cardinals, now 6-0 in conference play, are on the brink of clinching a spot in the MAC Championship Game, with their magic number down to one.

The Cardinals set the tone early with a rapid four-play, 79-yard drive after a Bobcats opening punt. Qian Magwood, the star of the day, ripped off runs of 6, 35, and 22 yards before Philip Onwualu capped the drive with a 15-yard jet sweep touchdown. On Ohio’s next possession, CB Blair Schonhorst electrified the crowd with a 50-yard pick-six, putting Ball State in control.

While Ohio managed a 26-yard touchdown pass after a lengthy 13-play, 84-yard drive, Ball State’s momentum never wavered. The Cardinals scored on all three first-half possessions, with QB Kadin Semonza’s 2-yard rushing touchdown just before halftime giving them a commanding 28-7 lead.

The second half showcased Ball State’s ground game dominance as the team doubled its first-half rushing total to finish with 302 yards on the ground. Magwood was unstoppable, amassing 254 rushing yards and three second-half touchdowns, pushing him past the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

Semonza, while not heavily relied upon in the air, was efficient and effective. The sophomore quarterback completed 13 of 17 passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns, adding his rushing score to round out a dynamic performance.

Defensively, the Cardinals stymied Ohio after the early touchdown limiting big plays to seal the emphatic win.

Ball State now looks ahead to a pivotal rivalry clash against Northern Illinois in DeKalb next week. A victory would officially secure their place in the MAC Championship Game as the South Division representative. With their offense firing on all cylinders and a surging defense, the Cardinals appear poised to contend for a MAC championship.

DeKalb, IL. - The Northern Illinois Huskies have a simply formula to win football games, score over 30 points. The Huskies are 3-0 this season when hitting the 30 PPG mark, but with an offense that ranks 130th nationally, that is a tall task indeed.

The plus side for NIU is they're playing a Ball State defense in the bottom 25 nationally for most defensive metrics. But of course, Ball State also boasts the #1 offense in the nation with the 2nd highest scoring average-trailing only Penn State- in a game that figures to get out of hand for Northern Illinois early unless they can force Kadin Semonza into some early mistakes.

Ball State will be looking to keep the Bronze Stalk Trophy in Muncie for the 5th straight season with the bonus of clinching a spot in the MAC Conference Championship Game with a win as well.
