    Thanks man!

Once we got the two stops in the 1st half I was pretty confident we could outpace them. They started loading the box in the 4th and playing press man on Harbor, bad things happen when the defense does that lol

DJ Lagway Secures 4th Heisman In Gators History

DJ Lagway edged out Ball State sophomore Kadin Semonza to win the 2025 Heisman Memorial Trophy. Lagway led the Florida Gators to an impressive regular season before falling to Alabama 45-28 in the SEC Championship Game. Despite throwing three interceptions across his final two games, Lagway’s season totals of 3,611 passing yards, 38 touchdowns, and just six interceptions solidified his case for college football’s most prestigious honor.

Semonza, meanwhile, surged into the Heisman conversation late in the season, posting a remarkable 25-touchdown, three-interception run over the final six games as he guided Ball State to a MAC Championship. The sophomore quarterback finished the season as the nation’s leader in passing yards (4,437) and passing touchdowns (50), while also ranking third with 14 rushing touchdowns. However, struggles in high-profile losses to ranked opponents Notre Dame and Indiana likely hurt his chances.

“If he had a standout performance against Notre Dame or Indiana, he probably wins the Heisman,” ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit said on The Pat McAfee Show. “But losing both games and throwing six of his 15 interceptions in those matchups ultimately cost him.”

Despite falling short in the Heisman race, Semonza’s stellar season was recognized with the Maxwell, Walter Camp, and Davey O’Brien Awards. His teammates also earned national honors: Qian Magwood won the Doak Walker Award, Nyck Harbor claimed the Fred Biletnikoff Award, and senior defensive back DD Snyder brought home the Jim Thorpe Award.

While Semonza narrowly missed delivering Ball State its first Heisman Trophy, the team’s historic season left an indelible mark on college football.

LEFT - Senior MLB Joey Stemler recorded two sacks in his final game as a Cardinal.
CENTER - Zion Turner taking the free 81 yard touchdown on a broken coverage Turner had passing lanes almost all game, until consecutive interceptions killed any change of a Gamecocks comeback.
RIGHT - Senior Tanner Koziol snagging the 4th quarter touchdown to put the pressure back on Jax State.

Montgomery, AL. - Ball State closed out a stellar season in dominant fashion, overpowering Jacksonville State 56-24 in the Camellia Bowl. The Cardinals’ balanced attack and clutch defensive plays propelled them to their 12th win of the season, tying the program's all-time record for victories in a single year.

The game began with back-to-back turnovers on downs as both teams failed to convert fourth-down opportunities. Ball State then hit its stride, scoring on four of its next five possessions to take a commanding 28-3 lead into halftime.

Jacksonville State moved the ball effectively in the first half, gaining 189 yards, but outside of an 81-yard touchdown pass on a blown coverage, the Gamecocks struggled to capitalize. Their lone additional score came on a field goal. Meanwhile, Ball State overcame two turnovers on downs with a steady offensive effort led by quarterback Kadin Semonza and running back Qian Magwood.

Ball State opened the second half with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Semonza to Nyck Harbor, extending the lead to 35-10. Jacksonville State responded with a quick 4-play drive capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass and followed it with a 16-play march featuring two third-down conversions, pulling within 11 points at 35-24.

Ball State had a chance to answer earlier in the third quarter but fumbled in the red zone, setting up Jacksonville State’s long scoring drive.

Unwilling to let the game slip away, Ball State responded with a methodical 14-play drive of its own, highlighted by two third-down conversions and a fourth-down conversion. Senior tight end Tanner Koziol hauled in a 26-yard touchdown pass to restore a 42-24 lead.

The fourth quarter belonged entirely to Ball State. Jacksonville State’s final three possessions ended in turnovers—a pair of interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and a fumbled kickoff. Ball State capitalized, scoring twice more to close out the game in emphatic fashion.

The 56-24 victory capped a historic season for Ball State, marking just the second time in program history the Cardinals have reached 12 wins and notching their second bowl game victory. It was a complete team performance and a fitting end to a remarkable year for first-year head coach Nash Savage and his squad.

2025 NFL Draft Selects Two Cardinals

Muncie, IN. - The Ball State Cardinals bid farewell to 17 seniors following one of the most successful seasons in program history, headlined by standout tight end Tanner Koziol. Koziol’s pivotal role in the Cardinals’ offense earned him recognition from NFL scouts, making him the highest-drafted Ball State player (2nd round) since cornerback Shafer Suggs was selected in the second round by the New York Jets in 1976. Koziol was joined in the NFL Draft by converted wide receiver Qian Magwood, who shined in his lone season as a running back, amassing over 1,700 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.

While Koziol and Magwood were the only Cardinals drafted, reports indicate that defensive stalwarts CB Thailand Baldwin, SS DD Snyder, and MLB Joey Stemler have already garnered interest as undrafted free agents, showcasing the depth of talent on Ball State's roster.

Cardinals Capitalize On 2025 Success - Add 7 Transfers

Muncie, IN. - Coach Nash Savage entered the 2025 offseason riding high after leading Ball State to one of its most successful seasons ever, with 12 wins, an undefeated run in the MAC, and a Camellia Bowl victory. However, the task ahead was clear: rebuild a roster set to lose 17 seniors, many in key positions.

Complicating matters was the fact that Ball State began the offseason with only 11 commitments. Still, Savage had already secured the crown jewel of their high school recruiting class, 389th-ranked MLB JaMichael Tabor.

The transfer portal, however, became the true turning point. Savage capitalized on his program's rising reputation, bringing in eight new recruits during the transfer period. While the Cardinals missed out on marquee targets like Oklahoma DE Adepoju Adebawore (who chose Ohio State) and Utah MLB Cade Uluave (who committed to Arizona State), they struck gold elsewhere. Former Iowa DE Kenneth Merriweather was the first key addition, setting the tone for a defensive overhaul, with seven of the eight transfers bolstering the defense.

By the end of the recruiting cycle, Ball State had climbed from 59th to 47th in the national rankings, finishing with 21 total recruits (one 4-star and 20 3-stars). With a strengthened roster and renewed momentum, the stage is set for a highly anticipated 2026 season in Muncie.

                          2026 Ball State Pre-Season Recruiting

Muncie, IN. - The Ball State Cardinals have successfully leveraged the transfer portal to infuse talent over the past two offseasons, but Coach Nash Savage faces perhaps his biggest recruiting challenge yet heading into 2026.

With 30 graduating seniors this season, reloading the roster with a full recruiting class will be critical to sustain the program’s momentum. Fortunately for Coach Savage, Ball State’s rising profile is attracting unprecedented interest from recruits.

“We’ve seen the excitement in the transfer portal, and it’s clearly extending into the high school recruiting pool,” said Brandon Drumm of 247Sports on the Pat McAfee Show over the summer.

Coach Savage echoed that optimism, saying, “We missed on some big names like Carl Takeoff last season, but now we’re seeing those same caliber of players listing us in their top three before we’ve even reached out. That’s a huge shift.”

Last year, only one of Ball State’s 21 recruits earned a rating above three stars. This year, the program has set its sights much higher, with 20 of their 25 preseason targets ranked as four stars or better. The class is headlined by Alex Carmazzi, a five-star guard from Brownsburg, Indiana, and the 27th-ranked prospect nationally.

Defense remains a primary focus, particularly the secondary, where four of the Cardinals’ top five cornerbacks will graduate after this season. Another key storyline is the looming need for a quarterback of the future, as junior Kadin Semonza—last season’s Heisman runner-up—enters the final two years of his eligibility. If Semonza decides to forgo his senior year, finding his successor becomes an immediate priority.

With rising expectations and a broader talent pool, Ball State is positioned to make significant strides in 2026 recruiting.

                            2026 Ball State Season Preview

Muncie, IN. - Few teams carried as much buzz throughout the 2025 season as the Ball State Cardinals, but their two losses to ranked opponents in tempered any belief they could compete with the College Football Playoff’s elite. Instead, the 19th-ranked Cardinals settled for the Camellia Bowl, where they defeated an 8-5 Jacksonville State team to cap a historic 12-win season.

"Does it motivate us to be better this year? Of course," Coach Nash Savage told Logan McMillan of the Ball State Daily. "Not out of spite or revenge, but because we need to do more to prove we belong. We blew our shot last year with two losses, and I don't blame the committee for leaving us out. At the same time, missing out on the playoff gives you a different kind of hunger. We ended on a high note, and now we’re ready to build on it."

The Cardinals carried that momentum into the offseason, securing eight key players from the transfer portal, largely addressing the defensive struggles that plagued them in 2025. While their secondary endured a MAC Championship Game record-breaking performance from Toledo QB Tucker Gleason (634 passing yards), Savage and his staff focused on bolstering the pass rush, adding three defensive linemen and three defensive backs to recalibrate the defense.

On offense, the Cardinals return a loaded core, including Heisman runner-up Kadin Semonza, Biletnikoff winner Nyck Harbor, and sophomore standout Philip Onwualu. "He’s the next Ocho Cinco, period," former NFL star Chad Johnson posted on X after Onwualu’s breakout game against Ohio late last season.

Still, the team faces challenges replacing seniors Qian Magwood, who amassed over 1,700 rushing yards in a converted role, and tight end Tanner Koziol, a vital piece of the offense. Coach Savage acknowledged the need for a committee approach to fill those voids. "Guys like Qian and Tanner don’t grow on trees. We’ve got talent, but until the younger guys step up, we’ll go with whoever has the hot hand at running back and tight end."

Semonza’s role as a dual-threat QB also remains a topic of conversation. "We love Kadin’s ability to run, but we want him healthy all season," Savage said. "He’s got the green light when necessary, but we’re looking for smarter decision-making when he takes off."

With an explosive offense intact and a revamped defense, Ball State looks primed to build on its success. Though unranked in the preseason AP Poll, the Cardinals received votes in the Coaches Poll and have a chance to make an early statement with a challenging non-conference schedule. They open against Indiana in Bloomington, the site of their toughest loss in 2025, and face Liberty and #4 NC State in the first four weeks.

"If we want to prove we belong with the big boys, we’ve got the chance to do it early," Savage said. A determined Semonza added, "Never been readier," as the Cardinals prepare to kick off the 2026 campaign.

                              Game Notes
Bloomington, IN. – The Ball State Cardinals have been eyeing this matchup since the schedule was released earlier this summer. Quarterback Kadin Semonza admitted he's watched the game tape of last year's clash with Indiana every day during the offseason.

For those who might have forgotten, Ball State entered that Week 9 game riding a five-game win streak, with their only loss being a narrow 26-20 defeat to then-#6 Notre Dame. However, the Hoosiers made a statement, dismantling the young Cardinals in a dominant 45-14 victory, showcasing the gulf between the Big Ten and the MAC.

Fast forward to Week 1 of the new season, and Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti, fresh off a 49-21 victory over UConn in Week 0, is keeping his team focused. “We expect their best from the opening kickoff,” Cignetti said confidently.

Indiana’s defense remains anchored by the formidable DaePepae brothers on the defensive line. However, their secondary, which caused Semonza so much trouble last year, has seen significant turnover. With only safety Amare Ferrell returning, the young Cardinals quarterback may find opportunities to exploit a less experienced backfield—if his offensive line can give him the time he needs.

This matchup promises to test how much Ball State has grown since last year, as they seek redemption against a team that humbled them just a season ago.

JR QB Kadin Semonza played a near perfect game, avenging one of his worst statistical games of his collegiate career in the process, as he guided the Cardinals to the biggest upset in program history.

RIGHT - Tayven Jackson rallied the Hoosiers late, but unfortunately for him the effort would be for naught as the defense couldn't find a way to stop the nitro Ball State offense.

Bloomington, IN – The Ball State Cardinals exacted revenge for last season’s humbling 45-14 defeat with an explosive 45-33 victory over the #9 Indiana Hoosiers, showcasing their offensive firepower and determination to start the season strong.

Ball State set the tone early with a methodical 10-play drive spanning 5:45, capped by a 24-yard touchdown from Kadin Semonza to Philip Onwualu. Indiana managed a 50-yard field goal after a promising drive stalled, but the Cardinals’ ability to convert on key downs and finish drives with touchdowns defined the half.

After Indiana pulled within one point following a 73-yard strike from Tayven Jackson to Chrishon McCray, Ball State responded decisively. With just 24 seconds left in the half, Nyck Harbor soared to snag a 16-yard touchdown, extending the Cardinals' lead to 21-13 at halftime.

Statistically, Ball State held a 226-186 yardage advantage, with Semonza’s sharp 11-of-15 passing for 165 yards and two touchdowns standing out. Indiana’s failure to convert two red-zone opportunities into touchdowns proved costly.

The Cardinals received the second-half kickoff and wasted no time adding to their lead. Semonza connected on several intermediate passes before finding Harbor for a 34-yard touchdown. Following an Indiana three-and-out, Semonza struck again with a 51-yard bomb to Onwualu, extending the lead to 35-13.

Indiana’s offense finally showed signs of life after recovering a Ball State fumble, marching 65 yards for a Khobie Martin touchdown. However, a failed two-point conversion and a subsequent Ball State field goal left the Cardinals comfortably ahead, 38-19.

Tayven Jackson sparked a late Indiana rally, tossing a 39-yard touchdown to Caleb Pickett and a 3-yard score to McCray. But each Hoosier touchdown was answered by Ball State, with Harbor’s third touchdown—a 36-yard grab—cementing the victory.

Ball State’s balanced offensive attack produced 524 total yards (370 passing, 154 rushing), outpacing Indiana’s 444 yards, most of which came through the air.

Ball State’s victory marks their first over a top-10 opponent in program history and sets the tone for a season filled with high expectations. They’ll look to build on this momentum as they prepare for a visit from the Liberty Flames next week, while Indiana will regroup after a tough home loss.
