Backes, Oshie, and Johnson Attend Team USA Orientation

TJ Oshie, David Backes, and Erik Johnson participated this week in an Olympic Orientation Camp near Chicago. The three players were invited to the camp to get introduced to the USA Hockey program, which will ice a team in the Winter Olympics in February.

Oshie, Backes and Johnson hope attending camp, which concludes Wednesday, will put them under consideration for the Team USA roster.

“It’s pretty exciting thinking about being a part of something like that in 2010,” Johnson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Monday. “Along with winning the Stanley Cup, winning a gold medal has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid.”

Love the preview for this dynasty. Very promising as well as using a pretty underrated team in the Blues this season. I also love the T.J. Oshie love. Can't wait to see the ball rolling on this.

              Sydor Invited To Blues Camp

              By Jeremy Rutherford

A source confirmed today that longtime NHL defenseman Darryl Sydor has been invited to training camp on a professional tryout.

Sydor, 37, played the ‘08-09 season with Dallas and had two goals and 11 assists in 65 games. He has 98 goals and 499 points in 1,244 NHL games.

The word out of Dallas is that the Stars were looking for a more physical defenseman, following the retirement of Mattias Norstrom after the 2007-08 season. The Stars really missed Norstrom last year, and feel that Karlis Skrastins is a more physical player than Sydor, so they’ve opted to go in that direction.

Sydor was seen in Dallas as a guy who can still play in the NHL, a great leader and a strong veteran presence. He’s played in five Stanley Cup finals, winning two championships (with Dallas in 1999 and Tampa Bay in 2004).

Once again, there appears to be a connection here with Blues director of pro personnel Doug Armstrong, who was instrumental in bringing former Dallas player B.J. Crombeen to St. Louis and also luring Ed Belfour to the Blues as a goalie consultant.

Sydor was rumored to be headed to Vancouver on a tryout basis, but instead he’s opted for the Blues.

With the status of defenseman Eric Brewer in limbo, Sydor will battle for a spot on the blue-line, along with Tyson Strachan, Brendan Bell, Alex Pietrangelo, Steve Wagner and Jonas Junland.

                    Armstrong, Blues Agree to Terms

Veteran center spent last six seasons with the Los Angeles Kings

                    Tuesday, 09.08.2009 / 5:07 PM / News
                    St. Louis Blues

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced Tuesday the club has agreed to terms with forward Derek Armstrong to a two-way contract.

Armstrong, 36, played in 56 games with the Los Angeles Kings last season, recording nine points (five goals, four assists) along with 63 penalty minutes.

The 6-0, 197-pound center has played in 471 NHL games, amassing 221 points (72 goals, 149 assists) and 353 penalty minutes.

The Ottawa, Ontario native was originally drafted by the New York Islanders in the sixth round, 128th overall in the 1992 Entry Draft.

                    OBG's GM Notes:

Armstrong has been brought on board as an extra utility player with NHL experience, useful for dealing with inevitable injuries over a long 82 games season.

                      GM Preseason Notes
Training Camp is right around the corner!!! Its time to see how the boys have done over the summer and get back on the ice not only for camp, but for the preseason.

I've been doing some thinking about defensive pairings lately...looks like Polak, Pietrangelo and possibly Sydor will end up with the club this season giving us a few more options on the back end.

Going into camp here are my first inclinations as far as who will be playing with who...
                      Erik Johnson-Barret Jackman
                      Roman Polak-Eric Brewer
                      Alex Pietrangelo-Daryl Sydor

                      Extras
                      Colaiacovo
                      Weaver
Each pairing has an up and coming stud dman flanked by a veteran.

                      Camp starts soon!!!

Hopefully players actually get injured in 10.

                        Really liking this, btw.

Nice start but tough loss with Brewer. The St. Louis d-corp is stacked though. Not bad when you can bring in Brendan Bell as a 7th defenseman.
