        Offensive Flood Gates Open…

The Verizon Center Arena was rocking as the Washington Capitals put on an offensive show for the crowd against the New York Rangers. Just four games into the season it seems as if the Capitals maybe starting to find their grove. Rookie RW P.J. Tait started the night off by scoring the first goal of his very young NHL career by poking a lose puck into the net. “It wasn’t pretty but it was my first and I’ll take it,” said Tait, “It’s hard to express just how awesome of a feeling it is. All of the hard work I’ve put in is starting to pay off.” But that wasn’t his only goal of the night. Tait continued the scoring by deflecting a point shot by Mike Green past Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist.
        < font>
As exciting as it is to see a rookie score their first NHL goal, the talk of the night belonged to the Capitals second line. LW Geoff Sanderson was recently called up from Hershey of the AHL to try and jump-start Pavel Bure. “Later in the pre-season when they switched me to Pavel’s line and we really got things going offensively,” Sanderson admitted, “maybe it’s because we’re both veterans, who knows, but we just feed off of each other.” And feed they did, centered by Brendan Morrison, Sanderson and Bure we’re all over the ice creating scoring chances for each other. Sanderson easily could have finished with one or two more goals. Bure finally got on the score sheet this season with an assist on Morrison’s power-play goal.
        < font>
Semyon Varlamov topped off the night with his first career shut out.

        - Coach Boudreau shuffled three of the four forward lines tonight:
        < font>
2nd Line: LW Geoff Sanderson, C Brendan Morrison, RW Pavel Bure
3rd Line: LW Tomas Fleischmann, C Brooks Laich, RW Alexander Semin
4th Line: LW Tyler Sloan, C Boyd Gordon, RW Matt Bradley
        < font>
        - Boudreau stated that moving Semin to the third line was not a demotion.
        - LW Tyler Sloan played in his first game of the season.
        - Big off season signee Mike Knuble(RW) was a healthy scratch. Knuble has really struggled to find his role with the team.
        - Center Boyd Gordon replaced injured Dave Stekel by moving over from his normal LW position on the 4th line.
        - The shuffling of the sixth defensemen continued by Coach Boudreau. Recent call up Karl Alzner had his turn and was steady but not spectacular.

          Rookies Carry The Load…

The Hershey Bears won their first game of the season against the Wikes-Barre/Scranton Penguins by a score of 4 – 0. Rookie goal Braden Holby recorded his first shut out of his AHL career by making 19 saves. “Our defense played really well in front of me tonight. I have to give them props. I couldn’t have done it without them. They kept the lanes clear all night so I could have a clear vision of the shots,” Holtby said.
          >>
Another rookie that looked comfortable out on the ice was defensemen John Carlson. He scored his first goal of the season and added his first assist as well. “I saw Mark(Parrish) circle around and no one was covering me, so I swooped in from the point into the slot and buried his pass. On the assist I just saw Joudrey(Andrew) streaking up the boards so I hit him in stride and he did the rest.” Carlson explained. Mark Parrish admitted he was impressed with the rookie, “I looked up and there he(Carlson) was. He shocked me so much that I almost misfired the pass. It was a very aggressive move that not too many defensemen can make.” The Washington Capitals drafted Carlson in the first round for his ability to jump in the rush and man the power-play. He is very gifted offensively and is a very smooth skater. Management is hoping that this is just the, “tip of the iceberg,” for the young defensemen.

Two shut outs for the price of one admission!

            >>
Defensive struggle doesn’t even begin to describe the game between the Hershey Bears and Binghamton Senators. Through three periods plus over time goalies Braden Holtby(Hershey) and Any Chiodo(Binghamton) never let in a shot. Both goalies were on top of their games. “It was pretty boring on the score sheet but it was exciting to see both goalies excel at their craft, “Coach French said, “That’s two consecutive shut outs for Braden. We’re really happy with how he’s playing.”
            >>
The only other excitement was in the third period when Hershey center Jay Beagle was injured by a slash from a Binghamton player. He received a five-minute game misconduct for his aggression. The Bears failed to capitalize on the lengthy penalty and the Senators dodged a bullet. The game went to overtime and ended in a 0 – 0 tie.

              Win Streak Ends at Three…

              >>
The Detroit Red Wings welcomed the Washington Capitals into Joe Louis Areana and handed them a lose on the way out. Capitals goalie Semyon Varlamov finally came back down to earth after three impressive outings. “The Wings skill level is amazing. Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, etc., they are so deep with talent. They showed us why the made it to the cup finals last year,” Varlamov said. Semyon let in five goals on the night.
              >>
Rookie P.J. Tait came home to Michigan for the first time since being drafted by the Capitals. “My family and friends were excited to see me play at Joe Louis. I just wish I could have put one in the net for them. But getting a win would have been better yet. It just didn’t happen for us tonight.,” Tait admitted.
              >>
The second line of Sanderson, Morrison and Bure continued to shine since Sanderson’s call up from Hershey. Sanderson netted his second goal in as many games. Tomas Fleischmann finished off the scoring for the capitals on the night by taking advantage of a poorly played puck by Chris Osgood. The Capitals lost to the Red Wings 5-2.

I know Jonesey! I play right wing lock and I do my best to feed the monster known as Ovechkin but he's just not scoring! You would think with his skill level he would be dominating. He just doesn't play like the real Alex the Great! Hopefully this will change.

I know it's a long season, thanks for reminding me, I just need to be patient. This game is just so random! They did a really good job of it, it seems. Sometimes I can score, sometimes I can't. I just had another 0 - 0 game with Hershey. That's two in a row! You would think my offense is struggling but I'm getting plenty of chances. The guys just aren't taking advantage of them. It's crazy fun! I can't seem to score with ANY "power forward" player type. Not sure if I'm playing them incorrectly or not. Anyone else have issues with power forwards? LOL!

The Wings take down another victim in the NHL...LOL. Good job with the write ups and yes Ovy does need to get it going but right now Dats and Zets are having a hell of a time scoring for me as the bulk of the points are coming from the point shots and deflections.

Interesting concept with the Right Wing lock.

I may have to try locking on when I play a game sometime.

When me and my buddy play together online, he locks on at C and I control everyone else. Seems to work out for us.

Wow Viper, you're having issues scoring with Pav and Hank? Like OBG said, it's a long season, it'll work out. Those two are WAAAYYY to good to stay quiet for too long. The one thing I was pleased about with the Detroit lose was almost their entire team ended up on the score sheet. It was cool to see a total team effort. I'm from Michigan by the way and I love the Wings. I don't mind losing to them

Jonesey, locking on one position is a lot of fun because you're responsible for that player on the offensive side and defensive side. It feels a lot like Be A Pro but you still have control of the franchise. Kinda cool I started a season with a bunch of friends when they come over and we all position lock. It makes you really trust your teammates. The bummer in franchise is that I don't control everyone so I have to trust the EA AI, which is not the greatest all the time, really frustrating but I think it makes the playing field a little more even. I don't think the playoffs are a guarntee for my Caps because of this. If my offense stays hot I'll have a better shot at it.

Thanks for following and all the input guys. I don't mind discussing franchise experiences in my thread if it helps everyone have fun with this game!

                              Now entering….the twilight zone….

For the second consecutive night the Hershey Bears are left after overtime with a 0 – 0 score. However, this time it was against the Manchester Monarchs. “Believe it or not I’m actually happy with the offense,” Coach French admitted, “We’re creating a lot of scoring chances, the pucks just not going in the net. It definitely isn’t lack of effort. The guys are working hard.”
                              >>
Rookie goaltender Braden Holtby is in the zone. He has now rolled off three consecutive shutouts. “It’s really amazing. I feel like I’m dreaming,” Holtby said, “I’m not doing anything differently. Just playing to the best of my abilities. The guys in front of me are really working hard in the defensive zone and their effort is paying off.”

The Washington Capitals defeated the New Jersey Devils 4 – 1 for rookie goalie Michal Neuvirth’s first NHL win. “I was a bit nervous but being at home in front of our awesome fans really helped settle me down,” Neuvirth admitted. “He’s a mentally tough kid,” Couch Bruce Boudreau said, “Once we got through the first period I knew that he was settled in. The team played well in front of him.”

Six games into his comeback, RW Pavel Bure finally notched his first goal of the season. It was classic Bure as he made a nifty little deke that froze the goal and then buried it top shelf. “I feel good out there, no setbacks at all so far. I’ll shut it down for a game or two if things change but for now it’s all systems go,” Bure said. Pavel also added an assist later in the game on the power play.

Taking advantage of center Dave Steckel’s injury, Boyd Gordon chipped in with a goal and an assist on the night. “We’re really pleased with Boyd right now,” Coach Boudreau admitted, “He’s filled in quite well with Steckel being out but we expected that out of him.”
