Here it is...The highlight of my career going down the ****ter, what the **** was I going to do? My linemates were James Wright and Lance Bouma. We were sitting on the bench and Don Hay called a timeout with 5:23 left in the 3rd. He told James,Lance and myself that he wanted us out there for the last 5 minutes and 23 seconds. He said he knew we could get it done, boy was he right! James set me up with a perfect pass straight to the tape of my stick and then I got such a crisp shot off the goalie had NO chance in stopping it! *RMPHHHHHHHHHHHHH* There goes the goal horn, one of my favourite sounds in the world!! I hear it alot and I'm proud of my goal scoring that I can do. That was one of the best shifts ever but we were so tired with only 1 minute and 10 seconds left in the game so coach Hay called yet another timeout with only 1 remaining.
"Ok boys,we need a goal out there so get some gatorade in you and GET US A ****ING GOAL!!! Listen,if you score I will make sure I put in good words with the scouts from the NHL,I do have the hookups as some of you may know." There it was. My chance to shine. My chance to show the hockey world my true talents. People from all over Canada were watching from the arena here or on their television sets. It didn't matter cause what was going to happen next was UNREAL.
Nolan Toigo had the puck at the point and I knew to set myself up in front of the net for the tip. Only it bounced off Lance's stick and was in mid air and the goalie was spread out on the ice leaving me and the top of the net all alone. Luckily,I played baseball as a youngster as I bat that puck into the back of the net I hear my favourite sound yet again *RMPHHHHHH* I could hear the cheers all the way from Vancouver. I bet people were chanting my name like CRAZY!!
**AND THAT'S THE END OF THE 3RD PERIOD** It was all tied up at 4 and heading into overtime. I wasn't the Captain of our team or anything but I stood in the middle of the room giving my team a pep-talk. Our actual captain was Kevin Connauton but he was a ****ing ***** that didn't say a word so I just stepped up and felt like saying something instead of seeing him slumping in the corner like a fat piece of ****. "Ok guys,we have played our asses off and I'm proud of each and everyone of you" I then looked over to Kevin and he was sleeping so I screamed into his ear "ESPECIALLY YOU KEVIN,WAKE THE **** UP BUDDY"...Suddenly our team erupted in laughter...Then coach Hay came in and said "Braeden way to step up,I want you and your linemates out there again with Nolan Toigo and Neil Manning playing the point." I was SO EXCITED to finally end this **** and win this team another memorial cup.
Here it was,on goes the music and out come both teams. I heard some kid say "score it for me Braeden! You can do it!" I took that kid's word to heart and went out there and got stretched out and ready for the first shift. We won the faceoff and Neil passed it up to me. I gingerly skated it past the blue line and went behind the net. I saw Lance open so I passed it off to him and skated around the other side of the net. He then passed it back and I took a backhand shot, one of my worst shots that I have. *RMPHHHHHH* I heard that sound again. Music to my ears. I scored AGAIN. I saw hats fly to the ice and my teams bench clear out and they were all piling on top of me,I was finally living my dream of being the best. They were handing out the trophies at the end and I ended up recieving the MVP of the Playoffs. I can't believe this is happening I had to ask James to pinch me to make sure this wasn't a dream. He told me "Kid,this isn't a dream, you played your heart out...You deserve every minute of this." I put my arm around him and we celebrated our greatest acheivment of our career so far. Next we had been given the Memorial Cup,it was given to Kevin and then Kevin came over and handed it to me suprisingly. He shook my hand and said "Here you go kid,it's yours. You deserve it more than anyone else here, especially me."...What a great guy. I skated around the ice with it and yelled out "WOOOOOOOOOOO" at the top of my lungs.
What a feeling.
