C Of Red: A Calgary Flames Franchise

Erik Anderson is a busy man. After signing up for the GM spots for the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers and the NBA's Miami Heat, now he signed up for the GM spot of the Calgary Flames. (It feels like he's in a game or something...). As per his style, he does plan on announcing trades before the season starts.

    Recap and outlook

The Flames are a veteran team who have struggled in recent years. The Flames haven't won a playoff series since they lost in the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals. They windows is all but closed for this team, but there must be some moves to acquire more talent.

Flames shopping picks, looking for Fowards.
In an interview with Flames GM Erik Anderson, Erik mentioned that "I plan to be shopping picks to get better fowards on the ice with (Jerome) Iginla." He also mentioned that "Getting some Defensemen would be nice if the opertunity arises, but it is not of my immediate concern."

Flames announce trades; acquire big names

All it took was a few trades, and the Flames have one of the best forward lines in decades. Flames GM Erik Anderson announced this morning these trades:

Flames trade: Alex Tanguay, Matt Stajan
      Lightning trade: Steven Stamkos

Flames trade: Mikael Backlund, 2012 1st round pick, 2013 1st round pick, 2013 2nd round pick, 2014 1st round pick
      Penquins trade: Evgeni Malkin

Flames trade: Mark Gidrdand, 2012 2nd round pick
      Canadiens trade: P.K. Subban

The Flames aquired two elite Fowards to go with Iginla and a young, promising Defenseman. Coincedencly enough, Steven Stamkos and PK Subban played on the same pee-wee team. The Flames also signed Jakub Klepis to make up for the lack of centers, as Malkin will play Left Wing.

The Flames begin the season at home versus Malkin's former team, the Penquins.

Flames score 4 goals in 5 minutes, crush Penquins

The Flames opened up the season at home taking on one of the powerhouses of the Eastern Conference. The hometown crowd erupted in cheers as the new arrivals of Evgeni Malkin, Steven Stamkos and PK Subban arrived at center ice. The game was very close for the most part, with the Flames and Penquins spliting two goals a piece at the end of the second period.

That is, until Evgeni Malkin decided to put the game away from his former team. Within the span of five minutes, the Flames scored four goals to seal the deal, 6-2. Evgeni Malkin scored two goals, and Stamkos added a goal and an assist. Jay Bouwmester added a rare goal of his own, and the other goals were scored by David Moss and Cory Sarich. Miikka Kiprusoff had two goals scored against him, one from Sidney Crosby, and had a very good save percentage of .957% PK Subban, who was largely ignored by the media due to the more prestigous arrivals of Steven Stamkos and Evgeni Malkin, led the game with 9 hits.

The Flames head to Missouri take on the Blues next.

Flames head to St. Louis, slip past Blues

The Flames headed to Missouri to play their first road game of the season, and the Blues stood in the way of victory. The Blues came to play, but by the time the buzzer sounded for the end of the 1st period, they found themselves in a 2-1 hole. Things would only get worse for St. Louis, as in the middle of the 2nd Jerome Iginla scored his second goal of the game. Many people were ready to count the Blues out, but they scored two straight goals to tie the game 3-3 in the middle of the 3rd. Nearing the end of the game, the physical play of the Flames and Blues made it look like the game would be settled in overtime, but Curtis Glenncross settled the score with a few minutes left in the game with his second goal of the game as well. The Blues attacked viciously, but Miikka Kipprusoff fended of the Blues attackers and the Flames took it 4-3.

Steven Stamkos continues his points streak, adding an assist in this game, and he has had a point in every game so far (including preseason). P.K. Subban and Olli Jokinen added assists themselves. The Flames move to 2-0-0, and take on the Canadiens in Montreal next.

Good luck.. the trades seem a little unrealistic, but to each their own. Hopefully Stamkos does wonders for you. I'd love to have him on any team I have or watch.

Yeah, the Stamkos trade was highway robbery, but I paid for it getting Malkin. P.K. has also been great. The game wants me to stick him in the AHL! Screw that, he has been better than Jay!

                  Price, Canadiens shut down Flames
The Flames came into Montreal winning the first two games of the season and were looking to continue winning against a young Canadiens team. The Habs split the first two games of their season, 1-1-0, both on the road. The Habs looked ready to take their home opener, but the new-look Flames were nothing to mess with. The game took off fast, with the Habs taking a 2-1 lead after the first. Steven Stamkos scored his second goal of the game in the 2nd, continuing his points streak. The Habs pulled away though, and went into the locker room with a 4-2 lead. Midway through the 3rd, a Habs defender accidently put the Flames right back in it, unknowingly putting the puck in his own goal off of a rebound. Evgeni Malkin was credited with the goal as he was the last Flame to touch the puck. Carey Price prevented the Flames from getting any closer, stopping shot after shot as the Habs rode it out to take it 4-3.

Jay Bouwmeester added his second point of the season, with an assist and the Flames other assist in the game came from goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff. Miikka Kiprusoff had a save percentage of .917% Carey Price played phenomonal for the Canadiens, saving .963% of his shots. Scott Gomez led the Habs in points with 3 assists.

The Flames end their road trip next game, and they will head to Toronto to face the imfamously struggling Maple Leafs.

Flames crush Leafs, head to Calgary 3-1-0
The Leafs came into the game suprising everyone, winning their first two games. The Flames were 1-1-0 on their road trip so far, with a win in St. Louis and a loss in Montreal. The game was kept close until the 2nd, and in the 2nd the Flames scored four unanswered to go into the 3rd 5-2. There was no scoring in the 3rd, and the Flames easily took a win over Toronto. Evgeni Malkin, Steven Stamkos, Olli Jokinen, Curtis Glenncross and P.K. Subban were the goal scorers for Calgary.

The Flames return to Calgary to start a six game home stand to face the Oilers.

In other news, former Rookie of the Year Bobby Ryan will be out 2-3 months for the Ducks.

Malkin, Flames edge Oilers; Improve to 4-1-0

When the Oilers play the Flames, the game is almost always a good one and tonight was no exception. The Oilers came into the Saddledome looking to start the season on the right foot against their fellow Alberta rivals, but it was not going to be easy with the Flames reloading in the preseason. The Oilers have been rebuilding themselves lately, acquiring two first overall picks in the last two years, Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The game started out very physical and stayed that way, and going into the 2nd period the score was deadlocked at 1-1. The second period wasn't so kind to the Oilers, with Edmonton only scoring one goal and Calgary scoring three. The Oilers started to make a comeback, and scored another goal to bring it to 4-3. For most of the 3rd it looked like the Oilers could have a chance to send it to overtime, but Jerome Iginla put an end to that. Iginla scored a fantastic goal, spinning around and barely putting it into the net with his wrist. The Flames scored again and ended the game 6-3.

Evgeni Malkin had a wonderful game, scoring a goal and assisting on three. Stamkos continued his points streak, but at a cost. He scored a goal and assisted on two before severely spraining his shoulder. He will be out for nine days. Jerome Iginla scored two goals, and Olli Jokinen and Roman Horak scoring one apiece. P.K. Subban and Scott Hannan also added assists.

The Flames continue their six game home stand against the New York Rangers next, and Anton Babchuk will be playing through a broken nose. He will also play through it when the Flames play the Predators after that.

David Moss, Flames topple Rangers in shootout

David Moss had his time in the limelight when the Rangers came to Cowtown, as the Rangers and Flames dueled in a close one. The Flames took a 3-1 lead going into the 3rd, but the Rangers scored twice before the buzzer sounded. The Flames survived a few close calls as the game was to be settled in a shootout. Neither team scored until David Moss slid to the right of Henrik Ludqvist and squeezed the puck into the right side, winning the game for the Flames. David Moss also scored a goal and assisted on the other two in regulation, and two Flames defenders scored goals; Jay Bouwmeester and Anton Babchuk (who played with a broken nose). Miikka Kiprusoff had another decent night, with a .921 save percentage.

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Predators clip Flames in 3rd

The Flames were rolling on their five game home stand, taking down the Oilers and Rangers, and were looking to take down a struggling Predators team. The Preds came into the Saddledome 3-4-0, and were not looking to sharp. The Flames were heavy favorites, but the Predators defense, led by all-star Shea Weber only allowed one goal for the first two periods, and the Predators scored one themselves. It was looking like overtime was inevitable, but the Flames sliped up and allowed two powerplays for Nashville, and the Preds capitalized on both. The Flames couldn't get anything started of their own, and the Predators upset the Flames on the road, 3-1.

Jay Bouwmeester scored Calgary's only goal, and was assisted by Olli Jokinen and Curtis Glenncross. That gave Jay his third goal of the year already, rare for a defender. The Flames defenders have scored over half a dozen goals this season so far. Miikka Kiprusoff had an off night, with a save percentage of .857%

Steven Stamkos is expected to return for the Flames fourth game of their six game home stand, against the Colorado Avalanche. The Flames end their home stand against their bitter rivals and defending Western Conference champions, the Vancouver Canucks.

Iginla scores hat trick as Flames crush Avs

Things were going good for the Calgary flames, who entered the Saddledome 5-2-0 and 2-1-0 on their home stand. The Avs weren't doing so hot themselves, coming into the game 3-4-0. The Flames played gritty D in the first quarter, not allowing any points for the Avalanche and Jerome Iginla scoring Calgary's lone goal. In the 2nd period everything blew up in Colorado's face. Jerome Iginla scored twice in the quarter, being the first Flame to score a hat trick so far in the season, and three other Flames scored giving Calgary a 6-2 lead into the 3rd. The Avs scored two lucky goals, but Calgary just cruised through the 3rd. Evgeni Malkin scored a goal which meant nothing but a boost to his stats. Iginla and Malkin both have 7 goals, tied with several other players for second best in the league.

Miikka Kiprusoff had a fantastic game, saving .952% of his shots, and likely would've had a shutout if the Avs didn't scored two lucky goals. Steven Stamkos' points streak ended, as he did nothing noteworthy, partially due to his sore shoulder. Jay Bouwmeester and P.K. Subban both landed 11 hits, and P.K. is leading the NHL in hits currently.

The Flames rematch the Blues next, whom they beat in St. Louis only a few games ago.

                            Blues topple Flames in 3rd

The Flames were coming off of a dominating performance over Colorado, and were looking to continue what has been a strong home stand. The Blues came into town looking for revenge for the lost they suffered at the hands of Calgary in St. Louis just a few games ago. The Blues came rolling out of the gate, scoring their first goal in just five minutes. The Flames answered quickly, and the buzzer sounded at the end of the first 1-1. The Flames took the lead early in the second, but the Blues answered with two goals in a row. The Flames scored a goal with a few minute left in the 2nd, and the teams entered the locker room 3-3. It was a stalemate until well into the 3rd, when after Kiprusoff made a save, he passed the puck out to Blake Comeau, but Blake had the puck stolen from him and David Perron squeezed in the puck to give the Blues a 4-3 lead. The Flames tried to score, but the Blues defense locked down and St. Louis took their revenge.

Blake Comeau, David Moss and P.K. Subban scored Calgary's goals. Miikka Kiprusoff had a decent night, saving .909% of his shots.

The Flames finish of their home stand against their bitter rivals, the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks are struggling this year, after losing in the Stanley Cup Finals last year. The are 2-8-1 so far.

                              Breaking News!

Flames trade for 1st overall pick, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

The trade came as a surprise to many, as just a few games into his NHL career the number one pick in the 2011 NHL draft has switched teams. Erik Anderson said he was "extremely impressed" by his play when the Oilers came to play the Flames. "I feel like he can be a vital asset to the Flames in the years to come, especially as Jerome Iginla gets older." The Flames traded Blake Comeau, Rene Borque and a 2015 1st round pick to acquire him. Nugent-Hopkins scored 4 goals and had 5 assists in him time in Edmonton. He will play on the second line, at Left Wing. Tom Kostopoulos will be called up from the Abbotsford Heat to make up for the losses of two wingers. Kostopoulos will get his ice time on the fourth line.
