Re: Block M's Buffalo Sabres (NHL 12)

Center Maxim Lapierre was acquired by Buffalo in a trade last summer.
    Re-Visiting Buffalo's Recent Trades

BUFFALO, NY - With the 2013 NHL trade deadline just around the corner lets see how the two deals made in the offseason have worked out for the Sabres before any more moves are made.

Ville Leino & Jhonas Enroth to Calgary for Mike Cammalleri
While Cammalleri's 16 goals and 18 assists through 60 games does not put him on pace to meet his output last year of 25 goals and 38 assists he has proved to have a big impact. Not only did his play bring an upgrade to the second line scoring for the Sabres but his presence has helped fellow second line winger Tyler Ennis to a breakout year. Ennis has 20 goals through 60 games and missed part of the year with injury. Ennis had 17 total goals last year so Cammalleri's impact is apparent.

Ville Leino is having a better year in Calgary than he had in Buffalo last year. Having played in 59 games Leino has 10 goals and 20 assists for the Flames, already meeting his total in both categories from last season (10 goals, 14 assists).

The biggest surprise though is Jhonas Enroth. Enroth has not played a single game this year for the Calgary Flames as G Leyland Irving is backing up Miikka Kiprusoff but holds a very impressive 29-6 record as the number one goaltender of Calgary AHL affiliate Abbotsford.

All in all both teams were upgraded due to this trade. Buffalo now boasts second line wingers just as skillful as their first line wingers while Calgary seems to be set between the pipes for years to come.

Ales Kotalik to Vancouver for Maxim Lapierre and a 2013 3rd round pick
After a year away from the NHL Buffalo dealt winger Ales Kotalik to Vancouver and in his first year back Kotalik has 6 goals and 18 assists as he is settling into his role on the 3rd line with the Western Conference leading Canucks.

For Buffalo, Maxim Lapierre has missed nearly 20 games so far this season and will miss more as he is out with another injury but he currently holds a stat line of 6 goals and 10 assists which is already his highest output since 2008-2009.

With all the games missed you may say Vancouver got the best of this deal having a skillful third line winger as they chase down the Presidents Trophy but the Sabres did not acquire Lapierre for scoring.

When healthy the physical presence of Lapierre and fellow grinder Patrick Kaleta intimidates opposing teams. If the pair heal for the playoffs a lot of Buffalo's success could depend on how well the fourth line imposes their will.

I am fascinated by how terrible Dallas and Phoenix are doing. Columbus won just one game in their first 15 games and are way ahead of both those teams in the standings.

Hey, at least I'll know I have some place to go if Buffalo finds my body of work to be not good enough come the end of next season.

Good trade, have fun with Maxim Lapierre, he is a funny-troll kind of player. Always chirping at other people constantly, and gets on their skin. Are you putting him as a 4th liner, or a 3rd liner? He's pretty possible as a third liner!

I acquired him last offseason, just recapping here. He's been the man in the middle of the fourth line. Great combination with grinder Patrick Kaleta but injured an awful lot, has missed around 20 games.

              2012-2013 Block 7 Update: 44-21-5, 4th in EC
Mike Cammalleri is helping Buffalo close the gap and possibly earn a two seed in the playoffs.
              Back On Their Tails
BUFFALO, NY - The playoffs have already begun in a way.

With 12 games left teams are fighting to be in the top eight and stave off elimination. The Sabres were in that position last year but this year as the season dwindles they have a different goal, catching Montreal to earn a Northeast Division championship and a two seed in the playoffs.

After block six the Sabres sat nine points back, after an 8-2 run in block seven the Sabres are back within reach sitting just two points behind the Habs with 12 games left.

              Pominville Scores 30
Jason Pominville has led the Sabres in scoring all season and with his goal on March 3rd against the Edmonton Oilers he hit the 30 goal mark joining Thomas Vanek, Drew Stafford, and Derek Roy as recent Sabres to accomplish that feat.

Speaking of Vanek he is sure to break the 30 goal mark this year sitting at 28 with 12 games remaining.

Tyler Ennis has 26 and is also a threat to reach the mark.

Good News on the Injury Front
For all the injuries the Sabres have encountered this year they finally got a bit of good news.

It was announced today that RW Patrick Kaleta may be able to return as soon as the Sabres next game against Winnipeg. Kaleta broke his nose against Tampa Bay on February 15th and was expected to be back around playoff time but could be back in the lineup this week.

                Another Quiet Trade Deadline
BUFFALO, NY - The NHL is quickly becoming the NFL in terms of roster movement between teams during the season.

For the second season just one trade has been made, a deal between Philadelphia and Nashville. Nashville also made a key addition via waivers getting D John-Michael Liles from Toronto.

As for Buffalo the offers were there but nothing seemed right.

The Detroit Red Wings offered their 2013 1st round pick, their 2014 1st round pick, and wingers Drew Miller and Jan Mursak for Derek Roy but it'd be insane to trade away the heart of the team for the future with the Sabres poised for a playoff run.

The Pittsburgh Penguins looked to bolster their upcoming playoff run with Buffalo's Christian Ehrhoff offering their 2013 and 2014 first round draft picks but Buffalo declined to help a team they may run into this postseason.

                    2012-2013 Block 8 Update: 48-25-7, 4th in EC
Buffalo let points slip away by allowing Florida's game winner with 16 seconds left in the game.
                    Buffalo Settles Into Fourth Seed
BUFFALO, NY - Catching Montreal is not going to happen.

With two games left on Buffalo's schedule the Sabres sit three points behind the Habs and Montreal has two games in hand. While not impossible the Sabres have turned their focus to the four-five matchup and the three possible opponents they could meet.

What we know is Buffalo will surely be the fourth seed and hold home ice advantage over Winnpeg, Tampa Bay, or the New York Islanders.

Currently Winnipeg holds the Southeast Division lead by three points over Tampa Bay, putting them in as a three seed with just a few games left. Winnipeg has three games left while Tampa Bay has four.

The New York Islanders currently sit in the fifth spot but just as Buffalo have just two games remaining so movement is likely if the Islanders do not grab points in their final two tries.

                    Sabres Protect Their Stars
As soon as the Sabres clinched a spot Ryan Miller was replaced between the pipes by backup Scott Clemmensen. Clemmensen has gone 3-2 in his five starts and will get two more starts against Pittsburgh and Ottawa.

Star wingers Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville were healthy scratches for Buffalo's last game and will not play again until the playoffs.

Sabres Finish Just Shy of 50 Wins
BUFFALO, NY - In the final two games of the season the Buffalo Sabres won a thrilling game with potential number one seed in the Eastern Conference, Pittsburgh, but then fell in a shootout to the Eastern Conference's worst team to finish with 49 wins.

Backup goaltender Scott Clemmensen started the last seven games of the year after Buffalo wrapped up a playoff spot and did rather well going 4-3 and grabbing a shutout against the New York Rangers back on April 2nd.

As teams swapped position in the final days of the season the Sabres knew there were locked into the fourth seed and looked at possible matchups with Tampa Bay, Winnipeg, and the New York Islanders. When the dust settled a final day victory by the Tampa Bay Lightning gave them the Southeast Division crown knocking Winnipeg to the 5th spot to play Buffalo in the first round of Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Vancouver Grabs Presidents Trophy; Boston Fails to Make Playoffs
With all the attention on the Eastern Conference and powerhouse teams Pittsburgh, Montreal and Buffalo the Vancouver Canucks were allowed to sneak under the radar a bit.

At the end of the season it is Vancouver that holds the best record with 115 points. Pittsburgh finished second with 112, Montreal third with 110 and Buffalo fourth with 106 points.

It is also 100% guaranteed there will be a new Stanley Cup Champion after two time defending champion Boston was ousted from the playoffs on the final day of the season. Boston fought all year after a slow start to jump back into the playoff picture but a New Jersey Devils victory on the last day gave them the same amount of points as Boston and with more non-shootout wins the Devils got the nod for the eighth seed in the East.

                            Winnipeg Steals Game One Late
BUFFALO, NY - A deflected puck with 18 seconds left dashed the hopes of the Sabres in a physical game one.

Tied since the beginning of the third period after a Jason Pominville goal made it 1-1, this one seemed sure to be heading to overtime when D Dustin Byfuglien blasted a shot towards goal that was defelected by Alex Burmistrov and trickled past Ryan Miller for the game winning goal.

After a bad pass resulted in an icing, Winnipeg would win the faceoff down in the Buffalo zone. The puck would find it's way back to Byfuglien who let another shot rip on goal and beat Ryan Miller on his own with three seconds left to make the box score look a little better in Winnipegs favor.

A down right physical game saw Jets regular season leading scorer Nikolai Antropov leave in first period with a knee injury, he is expected to miss the remainder of the series.

Buffalo center Derek Roy also left the game with a broken nose but should be able to return for game two. Fourth line right wing Patrick Kaleta was not so lucky as he suffered a wrist sprain and also had to leave game one. He is not expected to be back until next week sometime.

I dont like LA vs VAN. Because of the current situation in real-life. I am really really disappointed..

Ahh, I wish van can pull off like that in real life. Great job winning against winnipeg. BTW PRESIDENT TROPHY WINNER!!!!!
