January update: Time is slipping away

        Team record: 21-25-3 / 28th in NHL / 15th in East

        Points: 45 (28th)
        Goals for: 112 (29th)
Goals for per game: 2.29 (29th)
        Goals against: 135 (14th)
Goals against per game: 2.76 (20th)
        Power play percentage: 11.8% (30th)
        Penalty kill percentage: 81.3% (18th)

        Coach Maurice on the season:

It's been a rough one to be sure, we never got our confidence and injury after injury after injury and we never got anything of substance going.

Regardless of the outcome we need to pull ourselves together and put on a show here over the next two months, our chances have faded to a dim light but we haven't given up despite our record and we intend to play as hard as possible to the very last game.

        Studs of January:

On a team that has struggled this bad, and had so much injury you really got to hand it to the guys who have all year remained plus players, really they are the bright spots amid a field of darkness, so for the first time in a long time Studs and Duds honors, the plus players of Toronto.

Quietly leading the pack is D Keith Aulie at +14, Keith started on our third pairing and has worked himself up to the second pairing, earning time on every penalty kill line and defensive match up we got, when a shut down presence is needed, Keith does the job.

RW Alexandre Burrows stepped into Toronto expecting more, only signing a one year deal in this past free agency he has come in excelling in a two way game with a physical edge, Burrows has split time between Toronto's first and second scoring units due to injury and was often used by coach Maurice as a catalyst to bring up scoring and the two way game of whatever line he was placed on.

C Manny Malholtra was much the same as Burrows, signing a one year deal during free agency, Malholtra has stepped in and held down a fourth line defensive role and excelled as usual, holding steady at a 58.7 face off percentage for the season, Manny's age is yet to slow his defensive game down.

D Jake Gardiner despite some injury troubles this season has put up another very quiet very steady year, while not being as physically imposing as sometimes defensive partner Keith Aulie, Gardiner plays more of a two way game and makes excellent first passes while also manning power play and penalty kill units, Gardiner is the jack of all trades that Maurice leans on in nearly every situation.

LW Travis Moen hasn’t been able to reproduce last year scoring totals but has remained a very solid third/fourth line player with a physical yet responsible edge to his game, giving his all every game played, Moen has never been questioned about his will to compete or passion for the game.

C Jarrett Stoll has spent the year moving up and down the Leafs line up until recently grabbing a firm hold of the number two pivot here in Toronto, perhaps not the best place for his defensive minded two way game Stoll has produced well enough and remains on the plus side of the charts, which is much more than many Leafs can claim.

RW Chris Neil is barely on the plus side (plus 1) but it counts, Neil has fallen off his totals in a big way from previous years, while only mustering 12 points and 48 PIMS through 49 games, he remains a big time character guy on and off the ice and is counted on for his edgy yet responsible play on the ice.

        Duds of January:

While the choices are many I'm going with D Kurtis Foster who was signed to be a leader by example to the young Toronto defensemen here, he was brought in to face tough minutes against top players and has spent the year sliding down the depth charts and defense pairings. Once started as the number one shut down defensemen, Foster now spends his time patrolling the third pairing, watching guys like Keith Aulie, Jake Gardiner and Michael Sauer do the job he was hired to do.

        1 goal 5 assists 28 PIMS and a -16? Kurtis Foster, you’re a dud.

Obviously I don’t manage my goalies at this level, Malcolm is my starter regardless of performance so he develops faster, maybe when Matti is old enough (next season) I will split time more fairly, you know.. That is... IF I retain my job in Toronto, which I HIGHLY doubt.

                Season ending update:

Okay so a special note here, I had writtne up a massive article and the power flickered long enough for the CPU to die so I lost it all, sadly I dont have the patience to write that massive peice again so ill just be posting a by comparison very breif rewrite. Also to note I had done the trade deadline without thinking and only had like 7 games before seaosn end so I decided to jam it all into one update instead of writing 3-4 different ones.

I am sorry if this cheapens the whole chise but I cant rewrite that post, it was huge and though its my own fault for not saving it and losing it, I just cant bare to write it yet again.

C Ryan Johansen and D Jake Gardiner were both sent to the AHL for the Marlies playoff run, D Brad Thompson was returned to juniors to play in any games remaining there and I will be attempting to resign a one year contratc in Toronto as the GM, wish me luck.

                Trade deadline moves:

                Toronto trades:
