Franzen Shines in Detroit Victory Over Kings

Detroit, MI - Johan Franzen had one of his special nights. He had a hand in every Red Wings goal, with a goal and three assists. Todd Bertuzzi, Valtteri Filppula, and Gustav Nyquist scored goals for Detroit. Jonas Gustavsson made 18 saves on 19 shots behind a solid defensive effort from the Wings.

Anze Kopitar was the lone goal scorer for Los Angeles and Jonathan Quick made 35 saves in goal.

Mike Babcock said he plans to take a "hot goalie" approach for a while, so he will be going with Gustavsson in goal for the next game.

      Zetterberg Out Three Months

Detroit, MI - In surprising news, GM Steve Yzerman announced today that Captain Henrik Zetterberg will undergo surgery to repair a torn elbow tendon suffered last night against Los Angeles. He is expected to be out approximately three months, meaning he should be due back at the beginning of March at the very latest. Cory Emmerton was called up from AHL affiliate Grand Rapids and will likely center the 4th line. Valterri Filppula will probably move from 1st line wing to 2nd line center. This is a big blow for Detroit, who is currently out of the playoff picture with an 11-9-3 record.

        Niemi Blanks Red Wings

Detroit, MI - Antti Niemi sure has Detroit's number. Two years removed from knocking Detroit from the playoffs with an outstanding effort, Antti Niemi posted a 29 save shutout in Detroit. Troy Wingels and Joe Thornton had the goals for San Jose. Jonas Gustavsson stopped 31 of 33 saves and coach Mike Babcock said he will stick with him in goal.

Duchene's Hat Trick Fuels Avs Over Red Wings

Detroit, MI - Matt Duchene recorded a hat trick in just under 12 minutes into the 1st period, and the Avs did no looking back from there en route to a 4-1 victory. David Jones added a goal in the 2nd period and Semyon Varlamov was excellent in goal stopping 26 of 27 shots.

Pavel Datsyuk scored the only goal for Detroit and Jonas Gustavsson made 28 saves in goal. Expect Jimmy Howard to have the next start in goal.

            Holtby Shines, Caps Clip Wings

Detroit, MI - Braden Holtby stopped 34 of 35 shots, Troy Brouwer and Karl Alzner each provided a goal, and the Washington Capitals defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2-1. Damien Brunner scored his 4th goal of the season in the 3rd period to cut the lead in half, but Holtby stopped the next 10 shots thrown his way.

Jimmy Howard stopped 23 of 25 shots for Detroit.

4th Line Provides Spark for Red Wings

Detroit, MI - Sometimes, size does matter. The Red Wings bruisers, Jordin Tootoo and Justin Abdelkader wreaked havoc on Boston's defense by finishing checks all game long, and were rewarded in the 2nd period for their effort. Jordin Tootoo finished his check and the defenseman coughed up the puck, which squirted right to Abdelkader in front of the goal and he put it home to give Detroit a 2-1 lead. This ended up being the deciding goal of the game.

Damien Brunner scored on a powerplay by putting a rebound from a Johan Franzen wristshot under Rask's pads for the 1-0 lead. Daniel Paille scored early into the 2nd period for Boston off a rebound of his own.

Pavel Datsyuk brought the score to 3-1 in favor of Detroit in the 3rd period with a deflection from a feed by Johan Franzen. Todd Bertuzzi added a goal of his own by forcing a giveaway and carrying the puck from the corner to the front of the net.

Said coach Mike Babcock after the win:

"I thought our guys played good tonight. Especially our bottom line. They gave us a ton of energy tonight and that was big for us. I told our guys to finish checks and get pucks to the net. I thought we've been trying to be to soft lately and making too many passes. It obviously worked for us tonight."

                Rookies Shine in Detroit Win

Detroit, MI - There was a lot of talk about newcomers Gustav Nyquist and Damien Brunner at the start of the season. Tonight was perhaps their best game as a duo. Nyquist recorded a goal and two assists, while Brunner provided a goal and an assist. Jimmy Howard stopped 26 of 27 shots in net.

Todd Bertuzzi and Brendan Smith, another rookie, scored the other two goals for Detroit, who ends their 10 game home-stand at a lackluster 4-5-1.

Radim Vrbata, who scored the game-winner in OT the last time these two teams met, scored the lone goal for Phoenix.

Filppula Wins it in a Shootout for Wings

Nashville, TN - Valtteri Filppula skated wide to the right, deked to his backhand, went to his forehand, and snuck the puck between Nashville netminder Chris Mason's legs, capping off the shootout and giving Detroit a 3-2 victory.

Cory Emmerton and Damien Brunner each scored goals for Detroit, while Shea Weber provided both goals for Nashville. Both goalies were excellent. Chris Mason stopped 34 of 36 shots while Jimmy Howard stopped 30 of 32.

There was some chippyness to this game after Nashville bounced Detroit from last years' playoffs in only five games. The most controversial play of the series was Shea Weber taking the head of Henrik Zetterberg and smashing it into the glass. Most Red Wings fans felt he wasn't properly punished as he was not suspended and only fined $2,500.

Detroit is now 2-0 against Nashville this season and 2-0 when the game goes to a shootout.

Mikael Samuelsson was helped off the ice in the 2nd period with a lower body injury. He is expected to miss approximately one week. He has no goals and only two assists in 22 games, after signing a 2-year $3 million contract this offseason. He will be replaced in the lineup by Patrick Eaves.

                    Brunner Shines in Win

Detroit, MI - After a bit of a slow start, Damien Brunner is starting to show his scoring ability. He scored two goals and added an assist in a 5-2 Detroit win over the Los Angeles Kings. He has goals in three consecutive games.

Cory Emmerton, Pavel Datsyuk, and Valtteri Filppula scored the other goals for Detroit, and LA's goals came from Jarrett Stoll and Jeff Carter. Jimmy Howard stopped 25 of 27 shots thrown his way.

Nabakov's Records 33 Saves in Win

Detroit, MI - Evgeni Nabokov stopped 33 of 34 shots, and the New York Islanders defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2-1. This snaps a 4-game winning streak for Detroit.

Nabokov was signed by the Red Wings during the season last year, but was claimed on waivers by the Islanders. Unimpressed with the team's performance, he chose not to report. However, he chose to report to camp this summer and has been the team's starting goaltender.

Nino Niederreiter and Matt Moulson scored for New York, while Gustav Nyquist scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard stopped 25 of 27 shots for Detroit.

Jakub Kindl took a puck in the midsection in the 3rd period and was helped off the ice. He is going to miss about one week with a lower-body injury.

                              Helm Sparks Wings in Win

Detroit, MI - The Red Wings haven't been getting a lot of production from their bottom-six forwards. Darren Helm took offense to that. He scored the game-winner an added an assist in a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Patrick Eaves opened the scoring in the 1st period by taking the puck hard to the net from the corner. Derek Brassard tied the game 1-1 on the powerplay in the 2nd period with a wristshot from a nice feed by RJ Umberger.

Minutes later, Todd Bertuzzi played the body of the defenseman and forced a giveaway, which ended up on Helm's stick and he fired it under Bobrovsky's blocker. Valtteri Filppula was able to score of his own rebound in the 3rd period and Niklas Kronwall scored an empty-netter from center ice with less than a second on the clock.

Jimmy Howard stopped 22 of 23 shots in the victory, while Sergei Bobrovsky made 25 saves on 29 shots in a losing effort.

                                Strong Start Fuels Wings

Raleigh, NC - Detroit scored two goals in each of the first two period en route to a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Valtteri Filppula and Damien Brunner each scored two goals, while Pavel Datsyuk provided the other.

Tim Brent and Alexander Semin were the goal scorers for Carolina.

Jimmy Howard made 24 saves on 26 shots while Cam Ward stopped 31 of 26 shots.

Coach Mike Babcock said he plans to start Jonas Gustavsson in goal tomorrow in Pittsburgh to give Jimmy Howard a day off.

Brendan Smith left the game in the 2nd period after being shaken up by a hit along the boards. He will miss about a week of action and will be replaced by callup Brian Lashoff, as Jakub Kindl is not cleared to return from his lower-body injury.
