        Gustavsson Shines in Detroit Win

Philadelphia, PA - Jonas Gustavsson is turning into quite the story in Detroit. After signing a 2-year, $3 million contract this past offseason to be the backup goaltender, Gustavsson is giving starting goaltender plenty of competition.

"It's obviously real nice to have two good goalies," said coach Mike Babcock. "Jimmy is real good but Monster (Gustavsson) is giving him some competition and making this team better. For whatever reason, the guys win in front of Monster. That's nothing against Howard and he knows that. He wants this team to win as bad as anybody. It's not like he's having a bad year or anything, we just haven't been able to provide many goals when he's in net."

Jimmy Howard actually has the better stats of the two, posting a 2.06 goals against average and has saved 92.77% of shots thrown his way. Gustavsson has a 2.14 goals against average and has stopped 92.22% of shots. However, Gustavsson has a record of 10-2-0, while Howard is 14-16-5.

Gustavsson was magnificent once again, making 23 saves on 24 shots.

Pavel Datsyuk, Ian White, and Johan Franzen all scored goals for Detroit, while Gustav Nyquist added two. Brayden Schenn scored the lone goal for Philadelphia. Michael Leighton stopped 32 of 37 shots in goal for Philadelphia.

Detroit improves to 24-19-5 on the season, which has them sitting at 8th in the Western Conference.
