Sabres acquire Selanne, Koivu, Souray in bizarre eight player trade
Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy 1 min ago

The unexpecting success of the Buffalo Sabres have made the team perennial contenders for the Stanley Cup, so fans and analysts alike knew the team was going to make a splash before the Trade Deadline looms near. However, nobody would have expected the team to make such a trade, let alone one involving the movement of eight players before the start of a West Coast road trip.

After falling 3-2 in overtime against the Washington Capitals, it was enough for Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier, as he pulled off a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, acquring right winger Teemu Selanne, center Saku Koivu, defenseman Sheldon Souray, and goaltender Marco Cousineau in exchange for left winger John Scott, goaltender Steve Mason, defenseman Nick Crawford, and Paul Ranger.

To quote no one in particular...what in the hell?!?!?

The Ducks, whom are more likely finishing near the bottom of the standings, trade one of their faces of the franchise and two useful parts in exchange for what appears to be a whole lot of crapola. None of the guys acquired are NHL stars, nor even promising NHL-caliber players (aside from Mason, perhaps). Plus, they could have had Paul Ranger when he went through waivers from the Maple Leafs originally. This has to be a ploy to finish dead last and draft one of Aaron Ekblad or Sam Reinhart, or else this trade is a huge slap in the face to the fans.

On the other hand....the Sabres have improved. Big time.

The Ducks may have also made this trade to give guys like Selanne and Koivu one last shot at the Stanley Cup. After all, the Sabres have been the class of the league, and receiving even more firepower is what the doctor ordered. The offense has cooled down since the start of the season, and acquiring Selanne and Souray alone should improve that.

But still...wow...are the Sabres scary or what?

Sabres Leino has silenced the naysayers with 20th goal

Many believed that Leino would be serving coffee at Tim Hortons at the rate he was playing in 2011-12

At the beginning of the season, CapGeek, the all important bookmark for every hardcore hockey fan in the world, listed the 'Most Popular Buyouts' option on their website, Ville Leino ranked number six on that list.

Leino, a player the Sabres signed to a six-year contract in July of 2011, has failed to live up to the lofty expectations made by management and fans alike. The team attempted to make him a center, only to have Leino ask to be returned to wing, struggling to adapt to a new position and a list of new expectations forced upon him when he signed his big-money contract.

"It was a gloomy year for me personally and for the entire organization" Leino said prior to the Sabres 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night. "I never got adjusted, properly. I should have been better. I know the fans let me know about it, and the coaching staff was very disappointed in me."

After a injury-filled 2012-13 season which limited him to 8 games, fans were surprised the Sabres kept Leino around, even after trading Ryan Miller, Drew Stafford, and Thomas Vanek during the pre-season. Despite no power play time this season, Ville Leino became the third player on the team to reach 20 goals on the season. Not only that, but his impressive play has left general manager Darcy Regier beaming.

"I am happy he has not only returned to form, but has played better than he did in 2010-11 with the Flyers" Regier said. "He's not playing the major minutes, but his effort cannot be ignored. He's a pro, but he hasn't been afraid to mix it up, and the fact he's remained healthy has been a blessing for himself and the hockey club."

The 30-year old Finn, named to Team Finland's Olympic squad for the 2014 games, was ecstatic about the trade for fellow countrymen Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu. With Teppo Numminen as an assistant, the Sabres have some of the best Finnish hockey players in the world on their staff. And that's something Leino just enjoys.

"It's good; we need to have more Finns to balance the amount of Swedish players on the team" joked Leino.

          ----------------------------------------------

The Sabres will only have two more games before the Olympic break. As expected, the team will be well-represented for the 2014 games.

As expected, Teemu Selanne, Saku Koivu, and Ville Leino will be on Team Finland. Nail Yakupov will be on team Russia. Alexander Steen, Jhonas Enroth, and Henrik Tallinder will perform for Team Sweden, and Rochester Americans forward Zemgus Girgensons will go for Latvia.

The team will be unable to place Mikhail Grigorenko in Rochester due to age restrictions, so he'll remain with the Sabres during the break. But Sabres Marcus Foligno, Brayden McNabb, and Matt Hackett can be assigned to Rochester, but Sabres head coach Ron Rolston has noted that will not be the case.

"We will let them rest. We don't want to risk injury to any of our players while the break occurs. They deserve the rest and relaxation, and they will be better for us rested than potentially injured with the Americans.

Thanks. The interviews are always a bit tough to do, considering how vague most of these players are like in real life. It isn't the days of Brett Hull or Sean Avery, that's for sure.

            I try my best.

Speaking of Lindbergh, there is a book by Bill Metzler out which is a biography about the life of Pelle Lindbergh. It's a very solid read, one I've read multiple times. They interviewed practically everyone in the book, including former teammates, his ex-fiance, and even current Swedish goalies. There are plenty of stories about his hi jinks in the book that make it a fun read to boot. I'm pretty sure you can get a copy for under five bucks shipped at Amazon.

Thank you. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't bored attempting to make the worst trade possible. Although Mason is a four star yellow in terms of potential, Andrei Makarov is a four star green for the Americans, and someone who will likely become my starting goaltender.

Plus, I love Selanne. You know Anaheim would trade him if they fell out of contention.

                Sabres Rebuilt after Deadline

WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU WON'T TRADE US KEITH FOR MCBAIN?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?! > : (

                Dan Rosen
                NHL.com

(Buffalo, NY) As the trade deadline day begins to close, every fan in Buffalo knows to always expect the unexpected.

In 2012, the Sabres pulled off a last minute deal, acquiring center Cody Hodgson and defenseman Alexander Sulzer from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for right winger Zack Kassian and defenseman Marc-Andre Gragnani. In 2013, it was trading away Jason Pominville to Minnesota in a package that yielded Matt Hackett and Johan Larsson.

Despite making two trades, one acquiring Teemu Selanne, Saku Koivu, and Sheldon Souray from the Ducks, and trading away Patrick Kaleta to the New York Islanders, many believed Buffalo still had one more trade in them. The trade the fans waited for was too good to be true.

From a hockey purist point, it was shameful, yet a continued must-read. Martin Brodeur, in his final year, was beaten for the starting goaltender position by Cody Schneider. The Devils are one of the best teams in the Wales Conference, and have a commanding lead in the Patrick Division by a wide margin. You'd think the team would hang onto their franchise goaltender for the playoff run?

It's what Devils GM Lou Lamoriello wanted, but he knew, deep down, that Marty wanted to play. Marty never asked him for a trade, nor did he ever directly complain to Lamoreillo, the only GM he ever knew. But, the Sabres wanted a proven goaltender, and so, in the blink of a eye, Martin Brodeur would be traded, a move that sent shockwaves throughout the league.

The Sabres acquired Brodeur in exchange for goaltender Matt Hackett, a 2015 3rd round pick, and 2014 4th round pick. It caused the normally-calm Darren Dreger to curse on the air. It turned the TSN studio into a zoo ran rampant by the escape of an elephant. It appears that, for the last fourth of the season, Martin Brodeur is now the Sabres starting goaltender.

Sabres assistant GM Randy Lane was ecstatic about the move, with acquiring future hall-of-famers like Teemu Selanne and Martin Brodeur, the Sabres boost their chances for the post-season while adding players that were his favorites as a teenage anarchist.

"Can you blame me?" joked Lane in a interview with Sabres.com. "I watched these guys as teenagers, and the price that it cost, it was well worth it to add the influx of talent and experience of both these players. Both have Stanley Cups, both played during the early 90s, and both wanted to take their stick and shove it down Steve Ott's throat."

The move means that Jhonas Enroth, with 27 wins on the season, is demoted to the backup position. After watching the Swedes claim the bronze metal on the bench, Enroth may watch the Sabres win the Cup on the bench. But, if you ask him, this is not a negative at all.

"We got a pretty damn good goaltender, and I'm ready to do whatever I can to help the team win" Enroth said. "I can learn a lot from a professional like Marty. Plus, I still get my name on the Cup if we win it."

A Quick Word from HeroWorship faithful readers

I've decided that I'll begin simming a few games before the playoffs. While the original intention was to play all 82 games, I've elected that the results are realistic enough that I can afford to slide a bit. I've played 63 games, with 19 games remaining, I'll likely simulate 4-6 games of them.

Next season, I'll likely play roughly half the games. In order to keep my interest peaked, playing all the games is out of the question, since I'll likely get bored eventually. I'm usually good with playing the game nonstop the first couple of months before my interest begins to die. I enjoy simming, so I can find a confident medium that will be more fun for me, and maybe I won't win games 6-2.

Re: This is Gonna Hurt: The Buffalo Sabres Experience

Regressing: Are the Sabres a fluke?

Expectations were low for the Buffalo Sabres to begin the 2013-14 season. After a disastrous 2013 season where the team missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season, the team was ready to start a long, painful rebuilding process that was going to be in effect this season.

The trades of long-time Sabres Ryan Miller, Drew Stafford, and Thomas Vanek were the signs of the worst for fans, as it left the roster young, yet ready for criticism. They went into the season with 25-year old goaltender Jhonas Enroth taking the reigns in net, with a questionable defense and a mysterious offense. However, with twelve games remaining in the regular season, the Sabres have managed to win 48 games; a surprising total to every pundit around the league.

But, what's lost in all this is the team's hot streak; they won 17 of their first 20 games, for an absurd 85% winning percentage. They also scored a whopping 109 goals, 19 of those goals coming from second year player Nail Yakupov.

Does the Sabres 48-16-6 record indicate dominance? A closer look at the numbers would show otherwise.

                    First 20 Games: 17-3-0
                    Last 50 Games: 31-13-3

It was understandable the team would be unable to continue having a 85% winning percentage. They did manage a respectable 62% winning percentage since the 21st game of the season, but if the team would have started with a 62% winning percentage, the team would still have 43 wins, which would have still ranked them first in the league among wins (Toronto, whom have 43 wins as well, have played one additional game than Buffalo).

But what about Yakupov? In his first 20 games, he looked to get at least 50+ goals. By the time of this article, he has 32. 32 is great as a second year total, but it means that he's managed only to score 12 goals in 50 games, which would roughly put him at 20 goals over a 82 game season. If anyone benefited from the hot start, it was Nail. The player behind him, Alexander Steen, has 31 goals, but he's scored 16 in 50 games, which also puts him behind the pace.

This has to do with the Sabres scoring; there 284 goals leads the league by over 60 goals. They scored 109 goals in 20 of those games, averaging 5.45 goals per game. Over the last fifty games, they've scored 175 goals, averaging around 3.5 goals per games, which would still be tops in the league in scoring.

There is still a ton of debate about the Sabres in the playoffs, even after acquiring Martin Brodeur and Teemu Selanne, but the fact is, the team is still a killer squad. Even over the last fifty games, the team still is tops in the league. They have one of the best power plays in the entire league at 28.2%, and are tied for second in short handed goals for with 8.

The offense isn't going anywhere...for now. The defense has improved greatly, and the debate should be over. The Sabres are not a fluke, and they have a chance to win their first Presidents' trophy since the 2006-07 season, another team with a hot start as they won their first ten games of the season.

                              Sabres Analysis

They may have been the best team in the league, but don't let Ron Rolston know that. The head coach shuffled the lines for the playoffs with a surprise omission; Mikhail Grigorenko, who scored 29 goals during the season, will be scratched, at least for now. Colton Gillies will take his spot in the lineup, becauseas Rolston mentioned, they have to match up with this squad.

The injury to Henrik Tallinder left a void on the defense, and the Sabres surprised many by recalling defenseman Drew Bagnall from the AHL and placed him right away in the lineup. Bagnall is a seasoned veteran in the American Hockey League, and one of the toughest players around. Sheldon Souray moves up to the second pairing with Brayden McNabb, and Christian Ehrhoff will play alongside Tyler Myers to start.

The word is clear; Martin Brodeur is in the nets for the Sabres, and Jhonas Enroth will watch from the bench. Brodeur has 205 games of playoff experience, with five trips to the Stanley Cup Finals on his resume. Brodeur has been shaky since being acquired, but Rolston is confident he'll help shut the door on the Panthers in round one.

Sabres Sweep Panthers; move on to play the Bruins

After the Sabres 4-3 overtime thriller in game one, head coach Ron Rolston was furious about the play. So much so that he didn't record a single praise during his press conference, rather, he was upset at the team's urgency, allowing the Panthers to overcome a 3-0 defect to force overtime and nearly causing the team to drop the first game of the series.

The message was received; the Sabres dominated the remainder of the games, bringing an easy sweep as the Florida Panthers faithful watched in disgust as the Sabres celebrated their first playoff series win in seven years on their home ice.

The team has been led by Alexander Steen, thee of five goals in the series, but he hasn't been the only bright spot, as the fourth line of Colton Gillies, Saku Koivu, and Corey Tropp have chipped in offensively and Drew Bagnall's standout performance at the point has made the mood inside the locker room high.

St. Brodeur, as Sabres forward Tyler Ennis has been calling him, has played well, allowing only nine goals in the four game series, with a cool .918 save percentage. They received a week break before facing the Bruins in the playoffs for the first time since 2010. The Bruins beat the Sabres four games to two in that series. Ennis, along with Tyler Myers, and Henrik Tallinder, were on that squad.

"We know they will be a tough team to play against, we aren't ignorant of that" said Ennis. "But we've learned from that and have grown together as a team. We have to continue doing the little things right and force the opposition to play our game."

Ennis was only a 20-year old rookie that post-season, when he received the call-up during the Sabres push towards the post-season that year. As was Myers. The Bruins also had plenty of rest, as they swept the Maple Leafs as well.

NOTES: Henrik Tallinder will be out for game one, but may return in game two. Rolston noted that Tallinder will be inserted into the lineup the moment he's ready. It will be a tough call to remove either one of Mike Weber, Drew Bagnall, or Brayden McNabb from the lineup.

The Black Aces: The Sabres have confirmed six members of what they dub 'the black aces' for the playoff run. The term is used for extra players being carried on the roster from the AHL squad that may play due to injury or poor performance.

Goaltender Andrei Makarov, defenseman Alexander Sulzer and Mark Pysyk, and forwards Jamie Tardiff, Zemgus Girgensons, and Johan Larsson are up with the squad. Although Girgensons has been allowed to play for Team Latvia for the World Championships, his spot is reserved.
