Trade: 2014 5th to DALLAS, Colton Sceviour to BUFFALO

A total value pickup for Yurevich, and it has paid off big time. Sceviour has been an integral part of Buffalo's 3rd/4th lines, playing serious minutes and being a trust-able player.

Quote at the time:

"I feel that this is a good trade for us in our goal this year to accumulate young assets. We liked what we saw in Colton, and at 24 [74 OVR] we think he can develop into a key part of our franchise."

Trade: Ville Leino to NEW JERSEY, 2014/15 2nd to BUFFALO

Leino's contract was burning holes in the Sabres' pockets, especially for the little production he was giving. When New Jersey offered this trade, at the deadline, Yurevich had no questions for the Devils. Though Leino did help make them the 1 seed. We know how that turned out.

"The Buffalo Sabres have traded Ville Leino to New Jersey Devils for 2nd round picks in 2014 and 2015."

Repeat? Not Likely!

Though the Sabres are returning most of their core from last year's Cup-winning team—BS! Last year was a major fluke, and everyone knows it.

The Sabres had a relatively easy road to the finals, haven't made any major changes, their prospects aren't ready to make the jump, and let's face it: this team has no superstars who will be sure to turn in a great performance again. McBain won't explode again, and teams will be ready for Buffalo's style of play.

Player to Watch: Luke Adam, C
GM Akilles Yurevich has always been high on Adam, praising the young center for his hustle and determination. Adam rewarded that faith last year with a game-winning goal in the most important game of the Stanley Cup. Look for a breakout year point-wise.

Preseason Bubble:
Mikhail Grigorenko, Johan Larsson, Christian Ruhwedel
The youngsters all saw some limited time with the Sabres last year. Ruhwedel will look to usurp Alexander Sulzer's position, while Grigorenko and Larsson hope to crack the soundest and best bottom-6 in the league.

That's right, the big name on everyone's lips this off-season, Patrick Kane, is heading north of the border to Calgary. Kane agreed to a 5 year, 7.905mil/year deal with the previously moribund franchise.

"It's great to have a talent like Patrick at our disposal," said Brian Burke. Burke seemed his usual self, but when he returned to the Flames' war room, raucous laughter and a blow-up trampoline were seen.

"We were never really looking at Patrick. He's undoubtedly a top player, but there was little mutual interest and we feel the team has all it needs at the moment," said Buffalo Sabres GM Akilles Yurevich upon being asked whether the ex-Blackhawk had contacted the Cup winners.

Buffalo was so sure in its depth that it made only one free agent signing, 25 year old skater Alex Killorn from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Killorn may not even start the year in the NHL.

A few other notable signings from Free Agency: Ben Bishop signed a 1 year, 3 million deal with the Minnesota Wild, and the top defenseman on the market, ex-St. Louis Blue Ian Cole, signed with the Colorado Avalanche. Danny Briere signed a 3 year deal with the Los Angeles Kings.

43 Shots Lead Leafs To Season Opening 5-1 Win
Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk each had a goal and an assist as Toronto romped to a 5-1 win in Buffalo. The defending champions got their lone goal from Kevin Porter, while backstopper Ray Emery made 38 saves on 43 shots. Counterpart Johnathan Bernier made 17 saves.

Moulson's Goal Finishes Off Comeback vs. Detroit
Matt Moulson scored with 7 seconds to play as the Sabres came back to top Detroit 4-3. Mike Weber scored a goal and had two assists, while Tyler Ennis also scored and assisted. Andrei Makarov got his first career NHL win after a solid 23-save performance.
