LEAFS POISED TO WIN FIRST STANLEY CUP

Mitch Marner would score a goal and an assist and Joakim Nygard finished with 2 goals as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Dallas Stars 5-2 in game 3 to take a commanding 3-0 series lead

The first period would be quiet, no goals and only a few shots. Both teams defense came out to play and limited chances

The second period saw the games first goal. Dallas forward Denis Gurianov would be the recipient if a Joe Pavelski pass that he would rifle past Andersen at 7:05.

Despite ample chances, the Leafs would be unable to tie it until 25 seconds into the third period. Mitch Marner would take a John Tavares one timer and blast it past Bishop to tie the game. Alex Tuch would score his 15th goal of the playoffs 4 minutes later.

90 seconds later Alexander Kerfoot would reward us for his promotion to make it 3-1 after backhanding a Mitch Marner slapshot past Bishop. Joakim Nygard would add a brilliant breakaway goal, one which Frederik Andersen would assist, at 15:38.

Dallas would get one back at 16:47 with Jamie Benn knocking home a Tyler Seguin rebound. Andersen had no chance.

Joakim Nygard would add an empty netter at 19:50 for the 5-2 final.

The Leafs look to win their very first Stanley Cup since 1967 in two days

2021 Stanley Cup Finals Game 4
      Game Preview

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Dallas Stars
      [TOR Leads 3-0]

This is it. All the blood, sweat and tears this season, the multitude of injuries, the incredible and unbelievable comebacks. All come down to this game.

The Toronto Maple Leafs look to win their first Stanley Cup since 1967 as they take on the Dallas Stars in game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals, a series Toronto leads 3-0 after winning game 3 by a score of 5-2

Only two Leafs playing in tonight's game have won a cup before; forward Alex Steen and defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. Veteran goalie Henrik Lundqvist would finally win his first Stanley Cup after failing to win one in his entire New York career.

Head Coach Jacob Smaby said the lineups will remain the same as last game. This means defenseman Dion Phaneuf will not play a game in the Stanley Cup Finals. However he will still be eligible to have his name in the cup; he has played the required 41 games in the regular season (although just barely; Dion played in exactly 41 regular season games)

Re: Cursebreaker (Toronto Maple Leafs NHL20 - Fun Only)

THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS ARE THE 2021 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS

William Nylander and Alex Tuch each had a goal and an assist to help the Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Dallas Stars 4-1 to take the series 4-0 and win their first Stanley Cup since 1967

An early first period goal by Dallas (Joe Pavelski, PowerPlay, 18:35) did little to deter the Leafs as William Nylander would score a PowerPlay goal of his own at 11:29 of the second period. Travis Hamonic would make it 2-1 with just under a minute left

Auston Matthews would score at 2:11 to make it 3-1 and Alex Tuch would ice the game at 17:02 for the 4-1 final.

The 4-Game Sweep is the perfect way to end a rather tumultuous run to the finals; nearly going down to Tampa Bay in the first round, to the numerous 3rd period collapses.

Superstar Mitch Marner won the Conn Smythe Trophy with 10 goals and 27 points in 22 games, first in points and second in goals behind Alex Tuch (16)

Veterans Henrik Lundqvist, Alex Steen & Jay Bouwmeester will win the Cup in what could be the final season for their respective careers. Dion Phaneuf would win as well but projects to return next year, although not necessarily for the Maple Leafs. He may be kept for the Marlies as a mentor/minute muncher

Re: Cursebreaker (Toronto Maple Leafs NHL20 - Fun Only)

                2020-2021 Draft/Off Season Primer

The 2020-2021 Season is complete and the Toronto Maple Leafs finally silenced a bunch of demons by winning the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1967

A number of questions face General Manager Kyle Dubas as the team heads into the draft and free agency. Here's a look at the top 3 Storylines

                •Goaltending:

Frederik Andersen, brought in from Anaheim Ducks in 2016-2017, looked last year like the goaltender the Leafs needed. This year, despite winning the Stanley Cup, Andersen took a step back, especially with the save Percentage (.829 during the regular season) and goals against average (3.34 during the regular season)

Veteran Henrik Lundqvist, brought in to be a more reliable backup, performed admirably during the regular season, going 15-5-1 to go with 1 Shutout and a .930% and 2.43GAA, but couldn't get that form in the playoffs when Andersen struggled in the first round.

Matt Murray was brought in as the 3rd goalie and performed well in limited icetime; in 6 games he went 5-1-0 with a shutout and a .936 and a 1.50 GAA. He would be well suited to take over the backup roll if Henrik doesn't return or retires.

                •Who plays with Morgan Reilly?

Travis Hamonic, Timothy Liljegren and Jonas Brodin all had chances to play with Reilly, and whilst no one truly excelled, Liljegren turned out to be the best fit. Will that continue next year or will the Leafs look to change it up? An interesting wrinkle is Travis Hamonic is currently a pending UFA; the Leafs have been mum on whether they'll offer him another contract, despite Hamonic expressing an interest to remain.

                •Bottom line conundrum

The Leafs depth is what carried them through the playoffs. With Tomas Vanek, Joakim Nygard & Yegor Korshkov all needing new contracts and with players like Semyon Der-Arguchintsev and Nicholas Robertson coming down the pipeline, it'll be an interesting story to follow

DION PHANEUF, JAY BOUWMEESTER AMONG 4 LEAFS TO RETIRE

Defensemen Jay Bouwmeester and Dion Phaneuf will join forward Patrick Eaves and goalie Curtis McElhinney on the eternal golf club, as they all announced their retirement from the National Hockey Leafs

Bouwmeester, 37, played just 37 total games with the Maple Leafs, earning 1 goal & 4 points in 19 Regular season games to go with 2 goals and 9 points in 18 Playoff Games. In his career, he has 94 goals and 444 points in 1,346 games with Florida, Calgary, St Louis, Washington & Toronto, as well as 2 goals and 22 points in 93 playoff games

Dion Phaneuf, 36, played 41 games this season after playing 71 for the Leafs in the previous season, scoring a combined 6 goals & 29 points. He also had 0 goals and 4 points in 11 playoff games. In his career, he had 143 goals and 523 points in 1,160 Regular season games and 7 goals and 25 points in 66 playoff games

Patrick Eaves, 37, spent almost the entire season with the AHL Toronto Marlies, playing 65 games and getting 17 goals & 32 points. He was held pointless in 2 NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his NHL career, he has 132 goals and 242 points in 635 regular season games and 11 goals and 23 points in 83 Playoff Games

Goaltender Curtis McElhinney, 38, played the entire season in the AHL as backup to veteran Mike Smith and excelled in that role. He went 22-2-2 with 3 shutouts in 28 Regular season games. He also went 3-0-0 in 3 playoff games.

In his NHL career he went 100-96-12 in 256 games with a .905 Save Percentage and a 2.91 Goals Against Average

The Toronto Maple Leafs wish each one of these players well in their future endeavors

LEAFS LEAFS MAKE HUGE SPLASH IN FREE AGENCY; LAND MANSON, SUBBAN

The Toronto Maple Leafs shored up the losses of Jay Bouwmeester & Travis Hamonic by signing the top 2 available defensive free agents in Josh Manson and P.K. Subban.

P.K. Subban, 32, signed a 3 year contract at $5M per year. The 6'0 210lbs right shot defenseman had 6 goals and 22 points last season and a rather dismal -19, but he was playing on a weak New Jersey team. With the style that Jacob Smaby runs, Subban is in a great position to bounceback, potentially on the top pairing with Morgan Reilly.

Josh Manson, 29, also signed a 3 year contract, at a slightly cheaper $4.5M per year. He had 2 goals and 12 points along with a -4 in 80 games with Winnipeg last year. His big frame, 6'3, 213lbs, gives the Leafs another big body on the back end.

The team also picked up Right Wing Dustin Brown. The 36 year old forward signed a 1 year $2M contract after having 22 goals and 39 points in 79 games last season for the Los Angeles Kings, the only team he's ever known.

The team also picked up Matt Murray again. The 27 year old goaltender signed a 1 year, $1.4M contract.

In addition, the team shored up it's AHL depth by signing a number of depth players.

Highlighted by veteran Ron Hainsey, signed to a $900K 1 year contract, most of the others signed league minimum contracts, with the exception of Scott Laughton ($1.9M) & Cedric Paquette ($750K).

These include D Sebastien Ago, RW Brett Ritchie, LW Taylor Leier, RW Ryan White, D Yannick Weber &D Chris Wideman.

The team also shored up it's AHL goaltending, although they slightly overpaid in doing so.

Veteran goalie Craig Anderson signed a 1 year $1.5M contract. A rather expensive contract for a goalie likely bound for the AHL (given he would be 4th in the depth chart behind Matt Murray, Frederik Andersen and surprisingly rookie Kari Pirronen). He will share time with Mike Smith in the Toronto Marlies net. It will be interesting to see who the Leafs sign to be the Marlies 3rd string goalie; general Manager Kyle Dubas prefers to have 3 goalies per team, which helps in case of injury, but does cause a slight musical goaltender game.

                          LEAFS ADD ADDITIONAL DEPTH

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed 3 skaters and 1 goaltender to $700K 1 year deals.

C Nick Cousins, LW Juho Lammikko & RW Curtis Lazar joins goaltender Christian Schneider as a list of additional players the team is hoping will provide better depth for both the Marlies and Maple Leafs in case of injury

Cousins, 27, most recently played with Utica and Vancouver. He had 18 points in 24 AHL games and 6 points in 8 NHL games

Lammikko, 25, played in 59 games for the Florida Panthers last season, scoring 8 goals & 12 points

Lazar, 26, played in 80 games for the Rochester Americans of the AHL, scoring 25 goals and 55 points

Schneider, 35, played 18 games for expansion team Seattle Grizzlies, going 9-3-1 with 1 shutout, a .911 Save Percentage and a 2.98GAA

                            Preseason Storyline:

                            ✓Change in goal?

Frederik Andersen may have played his last game as a starter for the Toronto Maple Leafs when he won the Stanley Cup. Rookie goalie Kari Pirronen projects to make an unprecedented jump directly from juniors to a NHL starter. Very few goalies can say they had that privilege

                                LEAFS LAND LAFRENIERE

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired rookie sensation Alexis Lafreniere in a trade with the Washington Capitals.

Heading to Washington is prospect Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, left wing Alex Steen, defensive prospect Raimo Niemi & two 2nd round draft picks

Lafreniere, 19, had 10 goals and 26 points in a rough rookie season. Hopefully he won't have a sophomore slump; he can't afford another down season like that

General Manager Kyle Dubas has warned the Leafs may not be done tinkering with their lineup.
