END OF PRELIMINARY ROUND AT THE WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Canada will have a tough draw for it's showing in Group A during the Preliminary Round. A regulation loss to the United States means they will draw a difficult Russian team, a team that has definitely been underachieving at this years tournament.

Canada, bolstered by the like of Shane Prince and rising star Connor Bedard will go into the match as favorites, and are currently tied for allowing the least amount of goals along with Group B Winner, Finland.

                    CANADA STUNNED IN SHOOTOUT LOSS
                    January 19th, 2022

Team Canada seemed poised to return to the World Junior Championship Finals after a dominant 5-2 Win over Russia. A team with world class talent on display, such as Kingston's Shane Prince and London's Edward Jackson, along with emerging Superstar Connor Bedard. The Canadians plays a strong 20 minutes of hockey and were rewarded a 2-0 lead. The resilient Finn's didn't go away however, and were rewarded a goal of their own after a sloppy turnover by Team Canada.

Canada continued to sit back with the lead in the third period, and for the most part it was effective, limiting the Finns to only 7 shots on net. It was with less than 5 minutes left in the game, that Joakim Kemell took over the game; first having a great 2 on 1 scoring chance with teammate Brad Lambert and then ringing a shot off the post after a slick feed from Samuel Helenius. With less than a minute left, Kemell finally buried his chance after corralling a rebound from Ville Heinola.

An intense 20 Minutes of Overtime saw the Finns hold on to a Canadian Onslaught, as the Top 2 lines seemed to get double shifted. Despite the barrage, Finnish Netminder Joel Blomqvist was outstanding and kept his team in it with timely saves.

The Finns were clearly ready for the pending Shootout as all three shooters scored on what seemed to be well rehearsed shots. Roni Hirvonen, Joakim Kemell and Henri Nikkanen all scored for Finland while only Shane Prince scored for Canada.

Team Finland will now advance to play Sweden, a team they defeated in Malmo, SWE way back in 2014 for their 3rd Gold Medal.

AS GOOD AS GOLD - FINLAND WIN WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
                        January 21st, 2022

The World Juniors Gold Medal Game featured two familiar foes; Sweden and Finland. Although the teams haven't faced each other in a Finals since 2014, they are geographical rivals and have often met in the Group Stages. Finland was coming off a 3-2 Shootout Win over tournament favorite Canada, and Sweden comes in having blown out a promising Team USA 5-1. The two teams appeared just as evenly matched on paper, coming into the game.

The game certainly lived up to it's billing. Both teams came out hard, hitting and chances at either end of the ice. A save at one end often lead to a scoring chance at the other end. The Swedes proved to be quite resilient, battling back from an early 1-0 deficit and then erasing a two goal deficit.

Star Forward, Joakim Kemell was relatively quiet on the scoresheet, but was a catalyst for Finland on the attack. With under two minutes to go Finland was accessed a High Sticking Penalty, sending Peltola to the box. A sloppy zone entry by Sweden led to a Kemell breakaway; he would bury his 4th Goal of the tournament and perhaps the biggest of his career. The Finns would win the next Face-off and play keep away to kill the clock. The Swedes tryed to forecheck and win the puck back, but a long dump in would see the clock expire and the Finnish Bench explode onto the ice to celebrate the nations 6th Gold Medal at the World Juniors.

                            PRINCE NAMED TOURNAMENT MVP
                            January 25th, 2022

In a surprise to no one, Shane Prince won the award for Best Forward and Tournament MVP at this years World Juniors; despite being tied with Finland's Joakim Kemell and United States Forward Matt Coronato in Points. At times during the tournament, Prince had flashes of brilliance; showing everyone why he has been the consensus #1 Overall Draft Prospect since the beginning of the season. There were also times where he looked discouraged on the ice, and showed his frustration. This was first seen in the game against the United States in the Group Stage and again in the Semi Final match against Finland.

Other tournament awards were handed out to Switzerland's Yurs Lakin for Best Defenseman and Finland's Joel Blomqvist Best Goalie.

                                AROUND THE LEAGUE
                                January 30th, 2022

Teams are gearing up for the Trade Deadline as it was announced that the Salary Cap will remain frozen going into the 2022/23 Season. The move spurred some GM's to try to shed some salary before the Olympic Roster Freeze. The following are some moves that we have seen made:

                                To Edmonton: (D) Erik Gustafsson
To Chicago: 2022 1st Round Pick (EDM)

To New York Islanders: (D) Calvin De Haan
To Chicago: 2022 2nd Round Pick (NYI)

Claimed off Waivers: (F) Jason Spezza (TOR)
                                Claimed by: Vegas

                                Waived: (F) Logan Brown (VGK)

There has also been a lot of Firings. The first casualty of the season was San Jose's Head Coach Bob Boughner. The Sharks have remained season bottom dwellers and decided to go with a different direction after Boughner has failed to bolster his younger players.

The Los Angeles Kings also fired Head Coach Todd McLellan. McLellan was on a short leash after taking over for the struggling Kings, and with the team going 12-24-6 under his helm, he has been deemed not the answer.

The last firing was Peter Laviolette of the Washington Capitals. Known mostly as a defensive coach, Laviolette's system was not well received by the offensive minded core of the team and he was ousted after only 44 games with the club.
