American Soccer Enjoying Popularity Boost Due to Rise of Alvin Allen
        by Pete Patterson

Alvin Allen poses for the upcoming issue of GQ

Every year we speak of the rise in popularity of soccer after World Cup. Eventually the excitement fades and the support recedes and we are left to ponder how the tide will look in four years when the next World Cup rolls around. However, something happened this year that none of us were expecting. A star was born on the biggest stage. Alvin Allen scored 3 goals and had 2 assists in the tournament, including the stellar goal many are terming the "crane kick" after the classic movie the Karate Kid. Suddenly, the possibility of soccer rising into the popularity of the NFL or NBA no longer seems like a pipe dream, but an actual reality.

American soccer has always lacked the quintessential star power that resonated with fans. Alvin Allen is that star, propelling himself from the homegrown league of MLS into the top league in Italy playing for one of the best teams in the world, AC Milan. He's young, attractive, and has a bit of an ex-factor that his brother is one of the hottest stars in the NBA. Oh yes, he's related to "that" Allen. "Triple A" Allen is his older brother, and together they are sports royalty like we haven't seen since the Williams sisters or Manning brothers, and these two individuals don't even play the same sport. Rumors have Nike in talks with Alvin for an ad campaign featuring both brothers in commercials.

The world has been waiting for a American star for a long time. If Alvin is successful on the world stage, it would mean a whole new generation of soccer fans for our country. More players who get the chance to play for big clubs overseas, and the overall product of the sport will be better for it. The United States is not only watching Alvin Allen hoping that he will succeed. It needs him to succeed.

Re: Mr. Second Place: An Autobiographical Tale of Alvin Allen (Fifa 13)

I was emotionally numb. No tears would fall from my eyes. If anyone could see behind my dark shades all they would have seen were cold, hard eyes. I said nothing to the others that were at the funeral. At least a hundred friends, family and colleagues watched as the casket was lowered into the ground next to a beautiful portrait of Adelina “Quinn” La Monte. The world was silent, save for the intermittent sobs of the folks watching. I met the eyes of her father, watching in silence as his daughter was buried. The pang of guilt that hit me suddenly was more than I could bear, and I walked away toward my motorcycle.
She was gone. A.T. had said I needed to give it time, but I knew that wouldn’t change anything. I hated Leo for what he did to Quinn, but now I worked for him. Quinn had said Leo was no different than Vinny or Theo. What would she say about me if she were still alive? I was disgusted with myself. As I straddled by bike, someone strode my way holding up a hand to stop me. He was a white-haired gentleman, but he didn’t look very old, possibly mid-forties. The suit he wore was clean and crisp, but his face seemed creased with lines that gave him sort of a wizened quality. He stopped up short of my bike as I sat waiting for him to speak. When he didn’t I spoke up.
“Can I help you?” I asked, clearly annoyed.
“You’re the one who needs to help yourself,” he said in almost a whisper.
“What did you say to me?” I asked heatedly. “Who are you?”
“The one with the answers you’ve been looking for,” he continued in an even tone. “My name is Mr. Helms. When you’re ready to talk, call me.” And with that he walked away. I shrugged my shoulders and reach for my keys in my right pocket, and when I pulled them out a small slip of paper fell to the ground. I picked it up, unrolled it and scrawled in fine detail was a phone number below the script that said “Mr. Helms.” That weird guy slipped paper in my pocket without me knowing it. Who was he?
I started up my bike and drove away, lost in thought. It was time to leave the US and head back to Italy to meet up with AC Milan. As if home life wasn’t complicated enough, I now had to head in to meet with my new teammates. Big things were expected of me and my club, but honestly, all I wanted to do was get out there on the field and play. It was the only place in the world I could get away from my own thoughts.

                      AC Milan v. Juventus

                      2014 Supercoppa Italiana

It was a beautiful summer night in Italy, as the Serie A season would be kicked off as it is every year by the Italian Supercup. League champions Juventus are once again favorites to bring home league title this year, but looking to stand in their way is the always dangerous Coppa Italia champion AC Milan. Milan has had a shaky preseason as they look to figure out their starting 11. Newcomer Alvin Allen will be making his debut for the team at the center forward position in a surprise move over Pato, and he will look to solidify his starting spot with a good performance against a strong Juventus side. The pregame activities are over. It is time for the 2014 football season to begin.
Juventus would show why they were the Serie A champions, starting off with quick pressure on the Milan back line. Ciaccherini would give to Marchisio on wing and he would do the rest, cutting back inside drawing the defense to him. A quick pass headed inside to Vucinic who was marked well by Mexes, but he made a quick turn and strike on net that caught the centerback off guard. The electric kick went into the upper right hand corner in the 14' for a quick lead.
Milan would take the restart and push into Juventus territory. Allen would get two chances on net, but both were off target as the young man seemed to be struggling with the pace of the match. Juventus would start the counter attack off one of the misses, and as Vidal moved intot he penalty area, de Jong had no choice but to bring him down for the penalty kick. Vidal would take the shot, but he would miss the PK off the post and out. That was the last chance for both teams as they went into the half 1-0 for Juventus.
The second half would begin with Juventus continuing more pressure up front as they brought their team forward for the kill. However, Boateng poked the ball away from Asamoah and sent a long ball to El Shaarawy up the wing. He would turn on the jets and leave all defenders in the dust for a 1 on 1 with the keeper. El Shaarawy wouldn't miss a chance like that and the finesse ball would find the net for the 1-1 equalizer in the 52'.
Asamoah would get revenge of his own, as the next time he took it right to Boateng and make a smooth stepover past the midfielder to get inside. The give and go with Ciaccherini was unexpected, and when he got the ball back just outside the penalty area, he would send forth a rocket bender that Brkic had no chance to get to for the go ahead goal late in the half.
The game looked like it was slipping away from Milan late, but El Shaarawy would put together more late game heroics and he pressed his team forward. He would give to Muntari back in the middle who would kick to Boateng out wide. Boateng would get past the defender and send in an arcing cross. El Shaarawy would head the ball home, tying the game late. No other goals would be scored in regulation as this game was going into extra time.
The drama of extra time was short lived however, as Juventus put in an early goal in the first period of extra time. A bad deflection led to a corner kick for Juventus, and the ensuing corner kick was so poorly defended that Masi's header bounced twice on the ground before rolling into the net for the go ahead goal. Milan tried to press everyone forward in the second extra time period. The strategy backfired on them, as a subbed in Bendtner was able to score easily on a late counter attack to put Milan out of their misery. It was a lackluster ending to a great match, but I'm sure we'll see these teams again battling it out for the Serie A title later this year. But for now, the Supercoppa winners are Juventus.

                        Summary:
It almost seems unfair that Varese drew Milan in the first round, but a rusty Milan team that is still trying to find its rhythm almost blew this easy win with lackadaisical play late in the match. Milan jumped all over Varese early, with a quick goal by Allen in the 4' on a volleyed strike from an Emanuelson cross. Milan would control play early, as possession was dominated in Varese's half of the pitch. Boateng would add another goal just before the half, off a nice through ball from Allen that he would finesse home. However, things would take a sudden turn as Varese played their hearts out in the second half. They would dominate the ball, turning the tide on Milan who suddenly found themselves on their heels. Varese striker deLuca would get a chance early, sending in a bending ball that backup keeper Amelia barely got a hand on. The ball would head out of bounds, and on the ensuing corner Gduamadi would send in the perfect ball that Ebagua would head home in the 56'. A revitalized Milan squad would take wild shots after the restart, finishing the game with only a 29% on target rate. Varese would make a final run late, with Nadueric getting free on a breakaway one on one with Ameila. Amelia would come up huge, diving towards his feet and blocking a certain goal, securing the win for Milan. A bad game for Milan was only saved by the fact that they wer ejust in another class talent wise, but if they expect to win the cup they must perform better.

                            Summary:
Stadio Olimpico was a buzz after how well Torino played against the visiting Milan. The first league game of the year was exciting for Torino, who no doubt wanted to show they would be a force this year by upsetting one of the top clubs of Serie A. Milan continued to look for answers on the back line as all of the shots Toroino took were on target. We pick up the game late in the second half, as Torino led 2-1 on goals by N'Gog and Ramirez put Torino up early. Milan struggled to find their rhythm up front, with their left wing position still in flux. Today Pato got the nod, but he just didn't seem comfortable on the left side. Late in the match, Pato would be subbed out for Emanuelson, who is typically a midfielder. Allen would give it to Emanuelson on the wing, and he would send an arcing cross into the box. El Shaarawy would fake the volley and instead trap the ball, spin away from the defender, and poke the ball into the back of the net in the 83'. The goal was amazing and Milan escapes an embarrassing opener to the season with a 1-1 draw.

United States Ready for International Competition
                              by Dave Seville

The 2014 World Cup is over, but now its time for the national team to build on its success and prepare for the 2018. The young team that the United States fielded in Brazil played to a level that was not expected by anyone. The team they will field 4 years from now will be decidedly more experienced. If they want to return to that form, it will have to start playing at a high level in these international friendlies. They need to find the players that they can build a future with, as veterans like Dempsey and Bradley will eventually fade to background roles.

                                Summary:
The audible groans from the crowd reverberated through San Siro like a tidal wave. AC Milan was playing sloppy football. Passes went long, shots went wide, and tackles got missed. Something was really wrong with this team. It didn't help that Genoa was coming into town, and the boys were ready to pile on the damage to Milan. It stared early for Genoa. In the 6', Jankovic would receive a killer through ball into the penalty area from Immobile. Amelia charged out but he had no chance as the ball curled into the corner for the quick lead for Genoa. Milan would respond, as Allen got his first league goal of the year on a centered pass from Muntari outside the box. Allen would boom in the deep shot with his left foot to even things up in the 25'. It was after this moment that Milan played lethargically. Genoa would take control of possession, dominating the ball for 59% of the match. Biodini and Immobile would take some great shots of their own, but Amelia came up with big saves both times. Milan went into a defensive shell, giving almost no action to their front line guys like El Shaarawy and Allen. Just as the game seemed as if it would end in a draw, Genoa pressed forward. Immobile would take a shot that would richocet off of Acerbi, winning Genoa a corner. Merkel would take the corner, sending a bending ball away from net and just inside the penalty area. Mexes would miss the headed clearance, and Immobile would take avantage with a volley that crack into the back of the net in the 88'. Genoa would celebrate the win as Milan was once again looking for answers. This is not the way Milan envisioned themselves heading into Champions League play. They would need to find some answers and quickly, if they planned on being a force in this years Serie A race.
