Villarreal CF - Return to La Liga

Villarreal CF did not break into Spain's top division of La Liga until the 1998/99 season. They finished 18th in their opening campaign and were relegated, only to return again in 2000/01. This time The Yellow Submarine lasted for 12 seasons in the Spanish top flight, finishing as high as 2nd in 2007/08. 2010/11 once again saw Villarreal qualify for the UEFA Champions League with a 4th place La Liga finish, but after an injury to star forward Giuseppe Rossi in October 2011, Villarreal collapsed in the 2011/12 campaign finishing 18th to once again be relegated. This is a dynasty hoping to lead Villarreal back into La Liga and prominence on the European stage.

    Villarreal Hire Luis Enrique

VILLARREAL - Villarreal CF announced they have hired former AS Roma manager Luis Enrique to the same position as the club seeks to make the jump back into Spain's football top flight of La Liga after being relegated due to an 18th place finish in the 2011/12 season.

Enrique spent 1 season in charge of the Giallorossi where the club finished in 7th place in Serie A with a record of 16-8-14. After not qualifying for any European competition, Enrique stepped down from his post with one year remaining on his contract. Enrique had previously been the manager of Barcelona B from 2008-11 after succeeding Pep Guardiola.

A native of Gijón, Spain, Enrique is a former midfielder/striker for Real Madrid (1991-96) and Barcelona (1996-2004). He also represented Spain 62 times from 1991-2002 scoring 12 goals.

In his introductory press conference after being named Villarreal manager, Enrique stated the club's goals as follows: "The number one objective is to gain promotion back to La Liga. That is what I was brought here to do. How will we achieve that? I believe Villarreal will finish in 1st place in Liga Adelante. Nothing else should be expected."

Enrique continued, "After promotion back to La Liga, we will focus once again on European competition. However, we must take this process one step at a time. We are still in the Segunda División at the moment, so we must not get ahead of ourselves."

Now head boss of Villarreal, Enrique will also oversee the selling of top forward Giuseppe Rossi. The Italian international has a price tag of around €20 million and has asked for a transfer after Villarreal's relegation, not wanting to play in the Spanish 2nd division. Rossi would preferably like to be moved to a team in Italy, but many top clubs from around Europe will be vying for his services.

Thanks, this will be my first major venture into La Liga. Down the line I may add an Italy one too, but for now I want to get this kick started.

Ya the Rossi money will be nice, though I will probably try to save most of it until I get into La Liga. The side I have right now should be a force in Liga Adelante with minimal additions.

Giuseppe Rossi looks to be on the way out of Villarreal, but to where?

Villarreal Reject Porto and Juventus for Rossi

                    July 13, 2012

Villarreal CF has turned down two giants of European football in recent days in their attempts to secure the services of 25-year-old Italian forward Giuseppe Rossi. It has come to light that both FC Porto and Juventus made bids in the €13 million range for Rossi, but Villarreal is seeking closer to €20 million in compensation for Rossi.

Both FC Porto and Juventus are current champions of their domestic leagues in Portugal and Italy respectively.

Since being transfer listed, Rossi has stated that he wants to play for a consistent European contender. If possible, he would like that team to be based in Italy. Juventus would be a perfect spot for Rossi as The Old Lady added a 28th Scudetto to its resume in 2011-12. However, Juve backed out on their initial offer of €13 million when Villarreal countered at €20 million.

Likewise, FC Porto's offer, which came before Juventus', was flat out rejected. It is believed The Yellow Submarine will not dip below €16.5 million in their asking price despite Rossi's growing discontent.

Javi Venta could be calling it a career at the end of the season.

                          Javi Venta: "I May Retire"

                          July 22, 2012

Villarreal's 36-year-old starting right back Javi Venta told Marca.com that this season with The Yellow Submarine could be his last.

"When you reach my age it is something you inevitably have to consider," Venta said speaking about retirement. "I have not come to a final decision, but retiring is an option. Whether Villarreal are promoted back to La Liga will be a major factor on which way I go."

Venta spent the majority of his career with Villarreal from 1999-2010, registering 182 caps. In 2010 the Pola de Siero, Spain native departed for Levante only to return to Villarreal again over the summer in an effort to get club back into the Spanish 1st division after they were relegated to Liga Adelante following an 18th place finish in Liga BBVA.

If Venta does decide to retire, he will exit along with Villarreal striker Walter Pandiani. The 36-year-old Uruguay native has already made his decision to hang up the boots official.

Villarreal CF kicked off the Jose Enrique era with a 2-0-1 record in their preseason friendlies in preparation for the upcoming 2012-13 Liga Adelante season. The opening contest saw a visit from English Championship side Bristol City and it was a game that had The Yellow Submarine clearly working out the kinks under Enrique's new system. A Marcos Senna goal in the 21' would be the only score of the contest in a mostly disappointing display by the 1st team.

Next up was a trip to Norway and Fredrikstad FK. A mostly reserve squad for Villarreal had no problem dispatching the Norwegian club with 4 first half goals. Walter Pandiani notched a double with tallies at 28' and 32', Hernan Perez scored in the 14', and Manu Trigueros had a 30' goal. The only downside for Enrique's men in this one is that starting left center back Mateo Musacchio suffered a sprained knee and will be out 4 weeks.

Finally, Villarreal returned to Spain for a showdown with Sweden's AIK Fotboll. Once again Enrique played mostly reserves, but this time The Yellow Submarine looked uninspired in disinterested. Moi Gomez was sent off in the 69' with his second yellow of the game, putting Villarreal down to 10 men for the remainder of the contest. The game looked headed for a 0-0 draw, but a 90' goal by Robert Ahman Persson and then a missed penalty by Gerard Moreno seconds later was enough to see defeat in the final tuneup before league play starts.

Luiz Eduardo in action for São Paulo FC.

Luiz Eduardo Arrives on Short Loan

                              August 2, 2012

Villarreal CF have announced they have come to terms with São Paulo FC on a short term loan for center back Luiz Eduardo. The 19-year-old Brazilian will arrive in the next day or so and will be with Villarreal for 4 months, earning a wage of €4,000 per week.

When Mateo Musacchio went down with a sprained knee in Villarreal's friendly match with Fredrikstad FK, manager Luis Enrique realized The Yellow Submarine needed more depth at the center back position despite the fact that Musacchio will be back in action in time for the Liga Adelante opener against UD Almería.

Eduardo made his debut in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A with São Paulo in 2011 at age 18, playing in 11 domestic matches and 17 total matches. He also won the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior in 2010 and is part of the Brazil U20 national team.

If Villarreal like what they see out of Eduardo they may extend his loan for the full season or even acquire him via transfer. It is believed São Paulo would seek around €1.8 million in a transfer fee for the young defender.
