More Than A Game: Sunderland A.F.C. (FIFA 20)

Sunderland A.F.C. finished the 1997-1998 League One (now known as the Championship) in third place, qualifying for the promotion playoffs. After losing the first leg of the playoffs 2-1 at Sheffield United, Sunderland needed a win at the Stadium of Light to secure their spot in the final. In front of 40,000 fans, the Black Cats delivered a 2-0 victory.

    May 25, 1998
Wembley Stadium, London, UK --- After falling behind 1-0 to Charlton Athletic in the 23rd minute Niall Quinn equalized in the 50th minute. Just 8 minutes later Kevin Phillips scored to make it 2-1. In the 71st minute Clive Mendonca brought Charlton Athletic level to make the score 2-2. Two minutes later, Niall Quinn scored his second goal of the match, making it 3-2. Sunderland tried to see out the victory, but Richard Rufus scored for Charlton in the 85th minute to force extra time. Nicholas Summerbee scored in the 99th minute, and Sunderland were surely going to gain promotion to the Premier League. However, just four minutes later Mendonca scored his third goal of the match to make it 4-4. Extra time ended, and the squads lined up for a penalty shootout. Charlton Athletic shot first in the penalty shootout, and both sides converted their first six penalties. Shaun Newton came up for Charlton and sent the keeper the wrong way, sending his shot right down the middle. Michael Gray, who was born in Sunderland, stepped up to take the side's seventh penalty. Gray seemed to rush his run up, and he sent a weak shot to the right side that was saved. Charlton Athletic gained promotion to the Premier League.

The following season, Sunderland won League One, gaining automatic promotion to the Premier League. The club would remain in the Premier League for the next 10 seasons, and in 2017 they were relegated to the Championship. Their season in the Championship was an utter disaster: the club finished in last placed and was relegated to League One.

    May 26, 2019
Wembley Stadium, London, UK --- Sunderland had finished their League One campaign in 5th place, qualifying for promotion playoffs. After defeating Portsmouth 1-0 on aggregate, the club would once again meet Charlton Athletic at Wembley with promotion on the line. After an own goal in the 5th minute, Sunderland found themselves up 1-0, and luck seemed to be on their side. Just four minutes later misfortune struck, and Max Power had to be subbed off with an injury. Charlton Athletic's Ben Purrington scored the equalizer in the 35th minute, and the clubs went in to half time tied at 1, and Sunderland fans were desperate for their manager to make a tactical change, but having just two subs left made that difficult. In the 57th minute, manager Jack Ross subbed on Will Grigg for Chris Maguire, giving Sunderland two strikers up top. Neither side managed to create a quality chance until disaster struck in the 94th minute. Josh Cullen played in a cross from the left hand side that found Patrick Bauer's head. The shot was blocked, but Bauer fired home the rebound, sending Charlton up to the Championship. Sunderland would be spending the 2019-2020 season back in League One.

    The City of Sunderland

Sunderland is one of the largest cities in England, with a population of 278,000. The city was founded at the mouth of the River Wear and grew in to an important port city for the British Crown. In the early 18th century the river was manually made deeper and the shipbuilding industry took off in Sunderland. The turn of the 19th century marked the height of the shipbuilding trade, with Sunderland being labeled as the “greatest shipbuilding port in the world.” From 1846 to 1854 almost a third of the UK's ships were built in Sunderland. The blue-collar work force born and bred in Sunderland continued to thrive throughout the Industrial Revolution, and all seemed well in the sprawling port city. In 1988, shipbuilding activities ceased in Sunderland. Just a few years later in 1993, coal mining activities ceased. Sunderland’s two biggest job providers had disappeared in just 6 years. At the height of the unemployment crisis, 20% of the Sunderland population was without work.

The economy has since recovered in Sunderland, but the city is not the powerhouse it once was. The unemployment rate is down to 6%, but the population is not thriving by any means. Sunderland maintains its blue-collar status. It is a place where people have enough, but luxury is afforded to few. The climate in Sunderland matches the city’s character. On average, Sunderland sees rain for an average of 110 days a year (30% of days). The city sees 1515 hours of sunshine per year (Dallas, TX sees 2850, for comparison). The average high temperature during the summer is 64 degrees. Needless to say, the people of Sunderland don’t have much.

Sunderland A.F.C. is more than just a football club. The people of Sunderland surpass “die-hard.” Their love for their club is second to none. Few clubs, if any, define an entire city. But the people and city of Sunderland truly do reflect the club. Now, more than ever, it is imperative for Sunderland A.F.C. to begin its march back to the Premier League.

      Mission Statement
While I was really enjoying my Salford City career mode, I recently finished watching the Sunderland 'Til I Die documentary on Netflix. I was blown away by the kind of support that Sunderland A.F.C. continue to receive, despite the two consecutive years of relegation. The documentary has earned the club a new fan in me, and I want to do a career mode and document the club's return to the Premier League.

      Rules
      • All matches will be played. 8 Minute halves, Legendary difficulty.
      • A maximum of two youth academy players may be promoted to the squad each year.
      • While in League One, players cannot be trained above 70 overall.
      • Upon promotion to the Premier League the transfer budget will only be half of what is actually given.
      • If we gain promotion to the Championship after year 1 I will purchase George Honeyman.

The board has made it clear to manager Jack Ross that winning the League One title is the most important objective. There is no question that if Sunderland fail to get promoted the manager will surely be fired. "This club simply cannot afford another season in League One. It is too big. We have to get back to the Premiership," owner Stewart Donald said. Sunderland certainly have the quality to go up. It will be up to Jack Ross to make sure that happens.

Match Day One: Oxford United (Home)

Sunderland were defeated 3-1 in their season opener on Saturday. Oxford United absolutely dominated the majority of the match, especially the opening 20 minutes, finding the net three times. It looked as if the Sunderland defense were unaware that their season had started. Boos rang out across the Stadium of Light after the second goal was allowed. If the squad's form is not changed quickly Jack Ross could see his Sunderland tenure come to an end.

Match Day Two: Ipswich Town (Away)

Sunderland picked up 3 points on the road with a 3-0 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday. The Black Cats had the lesser share of possession on the afternoon, but were able to create more chances, converting 3 of their 7 shots on target in to goals. This is the kind of football that the club needs to play in order to gain promotion to the Championship. Manager Jack Ross was pleased with the way his team played, and even more pleased with the clean sheet. Sunderland will be in action in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday against Burton Albion.

I had the same feeling when I watched season 1 of the documentary, the support is great. It also helps the Stadium of Light is in FIFA.

Sunderland need a lot of help, this will be a big project but would be great to see Sunderland back in the top flight.

Yeah having the stadium and chants from the fans makes it more enjoyable for sure. Stuff like that is why I always play FIFA over PES. The authenticity matters to me!

Carabao Cup Match Day One: Burton Albion

Sunderland held on to defeat Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup 2-1. The Black Cats went up 2-0 in the first 20 minutes, and had another goal called back for offsides just 10 minutes later. In the second half, Burton started pressing higher, and eventually created a turnover that resulted in their goal. Sunderland were able to see out the rest of the match and hold on for a big win.

                              Match Day Three: Portsmouth (Home)

Despite spending a majority of the match on the defensive, Sunderland were able to find a late winner when Will Grigg tapped home a cross. Portsmouth's high press gave the Black Cats problem, but Portsmouth were never able to find themselves a goal. The Sunderland defense played well and made saves easy for their keeper.
