    #83 FULTON MOTORSPORTS WEEKLY RECAP

    Bristol, TN | Race 22/32

    Start: 35th | Finish: 42nd DNF

We were really looking forward to coming back to Bristol Motor Speedway. In the spring race we started 11th and made a rookie mistake and overdrove our car and led to a disappointing finish. Knowing what I know now, this time was going to be different.

Well, it was different. The setup we had for the day race didn't produce nearly the speed here under the lights and with warmer tempetures. Either that or the driver was a bit off. We will say it was a little bit of both and we only managed to qualify 35th. At least we were in the show.

Not much of an actual race report as the engine just shut off on me on lap 15. The game said Ignition and there was no smoke so I will say it was just a random "player DNF" that happens from time to time. I guess the game didn't take into account all my other DNF's I had before I got the random one. I actually like having that in the game as it adds to the realism just sucks when it happens at a good track for me. Oh well, on to Darlington where we will be lucky to qualify.

I have a question for you all following along. Do you prefer the way I did this race results/review or how I was doing it with the tables from OS?

The reason I ask is my caveman self just figured out how to screenshot and it makes it alot easier to post the results and points that way.

I will do whichever way you like better though as you all are the ones reading it.

If it's easier for you to screenshot, then go with that! I do like the brief recaps after the results too, and the Fulton-centric ones on the following post.

OOF! I compeletly forgot about the recap of the race. I was busy playing with the snipping tool and it slipped my mind. I will go back and add that in right now. I will still do MRN shows periodically as well, maybe every 4 weeks when the Point Standings are posted.

          Appreciate the feedback!

EARNHARDT CAPITALIZES ON JEFF BURTON'S MISFORTUNE

"The Track Too Tough To Tame" lived up to her name for pole-sitter Jeff Burton. Burton led the first 75 laps until he spun fighting with lap car Dave Marcis. Burton lost a lap in the ordeal and was never able to recover and finished 42nd.

Dale Earnhardt took advantage of the misfortune and led 88 laps to capture the prestigous Mountain Dew Southern 500 trophy. Earnhardt only relinquished the lead briefly when Ted Musgrave and Steve Fulton took turns at the point during rounds of pit stops.

Earnhardt said "this old track is the toughest on the circuit and if you ain't paying attention she'll bite ya!" Earnhardt was able to hold off a charge by Jeremy Mayfield late to secure the victory in South Carolina.

It's becoming automatic at this point but Mike Skinner was your Rookie of the Race coming home 12th place. Only one car wasn't running at the end and it was rookie Steve Fulton who parked it with handling issues. Next week we head to Richmond for the Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400.

              #83 FULTON MOTORSPORTS WEEKLY RECAP

              Darlington, SC | Race 23/32

              Start: 39th | Finish: 43rd DNF

We rolled into Darlington with minimal expectations given our last performance here in the spring. We still had no speed on long runs and just couldn't get a handle on the car past about 15-20 laps. We were looking to just make the show and get some points.

We were able to qualify in 39th to make the race. Expectations met but the mood in the garage area was very tense. Most of the crew guys can see the writing on the wall as I had signed a deal to drive for Bahari Racing before the Bristol race. With their futures uncertain they were just along for the ride. I had a similar feeling in the cockpit of the racecar as poorly as it handled.

We were able to hang on the lead lap with the amount of cautions and even led the race under yellow twice but ultimately had to retire from the race because we were so slow on long runs we were in the way. Looking forward to joining Bahari Racing and be able to do some testing.

FULTON MOTORSPORTS TO SUSPEND OPERATIONS IMMEDIATELY

In an interview following the Southern 500 at Darlington Fulton Motorsports owner Glenn Fulton said he was closing the doors at the race shop. He was none too happy that his grandson Steve had signed a contract for next season without discussing it with him or waiting until the year was over.

Glenn Fulton: He should have finished what we started here! We haven't spoken since Talladega. I guess he is still upset with my monkey comment. We are underfunded and we know that but he should have waited until the offseason to do what he did.

Steve Fulton was coming out of the hauler and getting into a golf cart to head out of the track when we caught up to him. This is what he had to say on the announcement.

Steve Fulton: It is what it is. He is mad and I don't blame him but Mr. Bahre wasn't going to wait around for the season to finish to get this deal done so I had to take the offer while I had one. We are looking to get started testing with Bahari and getting ready for 1998. It's a shame we won't be racing anymore this year but it don't mean we won't be working. I look forward to going "bananas" next year.

Obviously there are still heated emotions there but I'm sure they will iron things out by Thanksgiving dinner.

The screenshots are definitely better than the OS tables. Those tables are a mess in the app.

So are you just going to skip ahead to next season now? Can't wait to see what Steve does with a real team.

I will just be posting the final 9 races of the season and simming them without me in them. I already have them done just getting the posting done. I will be doing some testing at some tracks I need to but I have a ton of setups I downloaded I need to find the best ones for each track.

The reason I did the whole "fued" and ending the season was some of the tracks the AI gets messed up on long races so next season I will be bumping down the race length from 50% to 25%. Also, 100% opponent strength with default setups was a mistake as well. I was just so slow at most tracks I didn't want to be in the way.

Thanks for the feedback on the screenshots, they are much easier for me to post and I think they look better as well.

ROGER PENSKE TO EXPAND WINSTON CUP OPERATION

Roger Penske announced today that he would be joining with Michael Kranefuss to form a second team at Penske Racing. Kranefuss' #37 Fords driven by Jeremy Mayfield will be running the #12 in 1998. They also announced that Mobil 1 would be coming on board to sponsor the new team.

Jeremy Mayfield has been running very solidly this season and looks to be on the verge of a breakout year. Adding the financial support of Mobil 1 and joining teams with Rusty Wallace and Roger Penske this looks like the ideal match to produce many wins and even titles in the future.

BILL ELLIOTT HOLDS OFF TERRY LABONTE FOR WIN IN RICHMOND

                      Richmond, VA | Race 24/32

Another short track Saturday night for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series as the tour rolled into Richmond, VA. Jeff Gordon won the pole and paced the field through the early portion of the race. His Hendrick Motorsports teammate Terry Labonte would capture the point when Jeff had troubles on lap 64. Terry would battle with Bill Elliott over the final 136 laps swapping the lead a handful of times coming down the stretch. Bill was able to hold Terry off in the closing laps though to take his first win of the season.

The fans were all raving about this finish as it was one of the best races of the year. Mike Skinner took home rookie honors with a strong 4th place finish. The team continues to have strong runs as we enter the stretch run to the end of the season. Everyone was running at the end of the race that had only 2 caution flags for 8 laps. Next weekend we head north to New Hampshire for the running of the CMT 300. Hope to see you there race fans.

Eli Gold: Weclome to NASCAR LIVE here on MRN Radio ladies and gentleman. Tonight have veteran driver Sterling Marlin who just finished 6th in Richmond. How are you doing after that run Sterling?

Sterling Marlin: I feel real good when we can get a run like that. We haven't had too many runs like that this year but we are still plugging away every week.

Eli Gold: NASCAR silly season is upon us once again and rumors are swirling about the future of you and your team. Do you have any insight into what lies ahead for you next season?

Sterling Marlin: Well, we don't have anything in writing for us to return to the team next year. I have a few opportunities I'm looking at if things don't pan out with Morgan-McClure but right now nothing is in writing.

Eli Gold: Does that not knowing have an effect on race day with you and the team?

Sterling Marlin: Nah, I don't think it does. I can't speak for them but when I sit down in that car I have a job to do and I'm going to give it my best no matter which car it is. The crew guys probably feel the same way with their jobs. We just want to run good and compete for wins.

Eli Gold: Well good luck to you the rest of the way Sterling, we look forward to seeing you on the track at New Hampshire. That will wrap things up from here race fans, have a good night.

MELLING MOTORSPORTS ANNOUNCES SPONSOR CHANGE FOR 1998 SEASON

Harry Melling announced late this afternoon that SPAM was no longer going to be the financial supporter of his Winston Cup operation. Cartoon Network would be stepping in as primary sponsor starting at Daytona in February.

Lake Speed is the current driver and sits 39th in driver points and no driver changes are planned according to Melling. This is welcome news for Lake Speed as he know his performance has been bad this year and hopes a new sponsor can breathe new life into this team.

Yeah, Bill was my Dad's favorite and I always rooted for the owner/drivers and small race teams. The 30 had some of my favorite paint schemes and I'm looking forward to racing them too.

I forget how realistic this game is. The weather even matters when thinking of a setup. Too much tape on a warmer than normal day and you will blow that motor. If you hit a car in the rear going into the turn you both are likely to go for a spin. I tried playing the console games and while they were visually appeasing I love a more simulation video game. Not saying the console games are terrible, I'm just spoiled by Papyrus I guess. I don't have the computer to handle IRacing or I would give that a try as well. Maybe one day.

JEFF BURTON WINS THE CMT 300 AT NEW HAMPSHIRE INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY

Jeff Burton held off a late charge by pole-sitter Dale Jarrett and Jeff Gordon to get the victory in New Hampshire. Dale Jarrett dominated most of the race leading for 132 laps but Jeff Burton was able to get out front and lead the final 18. Jeff Gordon finished a close 3rd but had nothing for Burton or Jarrett in the closing laps.

Chad Little had a surprisingly good day as he brought the John Deere Ford home in 10th position.
