KEVIN LEPAGE TO DRIVE FOR LJ RACING IN 1998

After finishing 8th in the Busch Series points in 1996 and having a bit of a struggle this year despite showing signs of promise with good runs Shelburne, VT's Kevin Lepage will be contending for Raybestos Rookie of the Year in 1998 in Winston Cup. He will be driving the LJ Racing #91 Chevrolet beginning with the season opening Daytona 500 in February.

LJ Racing owner Joe Falk said he is confident in Kevin's ability to get his car in the races and hopfully have some solid runs next year. The team lacks any primary sponsorship heading into the season but Falk hopes some good runs can bring in the sponsors. We will see how it plays out for him in 1998 but the rookie class looks tough for next year.

BAHARI RACING TEAM TESTS AT DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY

      Daytona Beach, FL

While the Winston Cup boys are heading to Dover for this Sunday's MBNA 400 the Bahari Racing team is busy at work getting ready for next season. Recent hire to replace Johnny Benson at seasons end Steve Fulton was down in Daytona Beach for a testing session with his new team.

Steve recently ended his rookie season prematurely after his team closed up shop after the race weekend in Darlington. He seemed very eager and ready to get into the car and excited about next year.

Steve Fulton: Don't get me wrong I would rather be in Dover this weekend but the beach ain't too bad either. But really, I'm looking forward to doing some testing this fall and winter and we are going to be ready come Speedweeks in February. It's nice to be able to test that way when we get to the track next year we are just making minor adjustments instead of putting whole new setups on the car. I'm really optimistic about next year.

Here are a couple pictures from the testing session.

THE INTIMIDATOR SCARES OFF THE COMPETITION IN DOVER

        Dover, DE | Race 26/32

If you look up the word domination in the dictionary you would likely see a picture of Dale Earnhardt from Dover on Sunday. He qualified on the pole and led all but 2 laps of the caution free race. Sterling Marlin had another great run as he and Dale Jarrett tried to mount a charge against Earnhardt but it was too little, too late.

Mike Skinner was the Rookie of the Race coming home 16th and there were no cars out of the race at the end. Next stop for the Winston Cup teams and drivers will be the paperclip in Martinsville, VA. It should be a great short track race and we will see you there!

SILLY SEASON RAMPS UP AS SOME DRIVER CHANGES ARE ANNOUNCED

SABCO RACING #40: Robby Gordon announces he will be taking some time off after the season with goals to make it back full time in open-wheel racing. This leaves an open seat in the #40 Coors Chevrolet.

DIAMOND RIDGE MOTORSPORTS #29: With sponsorship from Cartoon Network leaving the organization the team has decided to scale back to focus on their Busch Series operation. Driver Robert Pressley is left without a ride after the announcement.

JASPER RACING #77: Veteran driver Bobby Hillin will be out at season's end according to our sources. The team cites poor performances as the reason. This seat is rumored to be going to Rober Pressley but nothing has been finalized as of yet.

PETTY ENTERPRISES #43: Bobby Hamilton is out at season's end. John Andretti is rumored to be moving over to the team.

CALE YARBOROUGH MOTORSPORTS #98: John Andretti is out of the ride and RCA is leaving the team as a sponsor. No announcements have been made yet to either search.

MORGAN-MCCLURE MOTORSPORTS #4: Despite back to back top-10 runs Sterling Marlin was released from his contract effective at season's end. Bobby Hamilton is rumored to be heading to the #4 after being cut out at Petty Enterprises.

ROBERT YATES RACING #28: Ernie Irvan will not be back in the Texaco Havoline Ford for Yates next season. An announcement is supposed to be made on a driver following the Charlotte race. Some names we've heard are Marlin, Hamilton and even Derrike Cope. We will find out after Charlotte.

MB2 MOTORSPORTS #36: Team officials said Derrike Cope will not be back next season with the team. Nothing is final but we hear the name Irvan coming up quite a bit to drive the #36 Skittles Pontiac in 1998.

MARK MARTIN TAKES HOME THE GRANDFATHER CLOCK IN MARTINSVILLE

            Martinsville, VA | Race 27/32

Mark Martin used a little pit gamble late in the running of the Hanes 500 to take the victory from the grasp of Rusty Wallace. Rusty led 214 laps from the pole but was shuffled back when several teams took only 2 tires on a late round of yellow flag pit stops. Rusty wasn't able to come all the way back to the point but did settle with a strong 3rd place.

Mike Skinner was the rookie of the race coming home just outside of the top-10 in 11th place. He pretty much has the Rookie of the Year Award locked up at this point in the season.

One car failed to finish and it was the Bud Moore #15 of Larry Pearson. He had a camshaft failure late in the running to spoil his day. It has been a rough year for the second generation driver and the outlook isn't too bright over at Bud Moore Engineering.

Next weeks race is from Charlotte Motor Speedway with the running of the UAW-GM Quality 500. Dale Earnhardt and Dale Jarrett put on a heck of a show last time at Charlotte in the 600 so we are hoping for some more great racing this Sunday afternoon!

MARK MARTIN WINS FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT WEEK AT CHARLOTTE

                Charlotte, NC | Race 28/32

Mark Martin has now moved on from having a very consistent year to adding a little domination in there as well. He won Sunday at Charlotte for his second win in as many weeks. He was able to hold off a late charge by pole-sitter Jeff Gordon to capture the UAW-GM 500 trophy.

Mike Skinner finished 17th and was the top performing rookie in the race. The caution flag flew one time for roookie David Green's spin coming off turn 4 but other than that it was an uneventful race. All 42 starters were running at the end of the race.

Next week the Winston Cup Series is in Talladega for the Diehard 500. We all know what to expect at the restrictor plate races, lots of 3 and even 4 wide racing. See you there!

Eli Gold: Welcome to this edition of NASCAR Live here on MRN Radio, the voice of NASCAR. Tonight's guest is coming off a very impressive run at Charlotte where he started 7th and finished 4th. It is the driver of the Bellsouth Chevrolet, Joe Nemechek. Welcome to the show Joe and congratulations on the fine run Sunday.

Joe Nemechek: Thanks for having me on Eli. We definitely had a good day at Charlotte on Sunday. Everything went our way for a change and we showed what we can do out there.

Eli Gold: It hasn't been the type of year you would have liked as you sit 26th in the point standings. Your teammate Robby Gordon announced that he was leaving at the end of the season as well. Has this affected your team as you move forward and prepare for 1998?

Joe Nemechek: We are still a good team, Robby just had his struggles this year as we have. We have kind of turned a corner I believe and whoever gets in that ride next season will be getting into a good seat.

Eli Gold: Any inside information on to who will be coming on board for next year?

Joe Nemechek: I wouldn't be able to tell you even if I knew but we know about as much as you do. I will say Felix Sabates is looking at going in the veteran direction this time. As to who that is, I couldn't say even if I did know.

Eli Gold: Well, thanks for coming on the show tonight Joe, we look forward to watching your team finish out 1997 and have a great 1998. Race fans, we will see you next time on NASCAR Live. The Winston Cup Series is heading to the high banks of Talladega this Sunday and it should be a heck of a show. Good Night!

ROBERT YATES RACING ANNOUNCES KENNY IRWIN JR. AS DRIVER

Robert Yates Racing has named Kenny Irwin Jr. as the next driver of the #28 Texaco Havoline Ford. Yates cut ties with veteran Ernie Irvan and had his eye on open-wheel standout Irwin. He will run for Rookie of the Year in 1998 and is really looking forward to this opportunity.

Kenny Irwin Jr.: I want to thank David Blair for letting me drive his car some this season but I couldn't let this chance pass me by. Robert Yates Racing is one of the top teams in the garage and I am looking forward to getting the #28 back to Victory Lane. We have a great teammate in Dale Jarrett so we both have high expectations for next year and years to come.

I was going to post some standings here but the screenshots I had of the exported files were too big and I couldn't go back in the standings. I will post the end of year standings only after Atlanta race but next year will be back to every 4 or 5 races.

MARK MARTIN IS ON A ROLL WITH HIS THIRD STRAIGHT VICTORY

                        Talladega, AL | Race 29/32

Mark Martin is really starting to dominate the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. He won on a short track, then a mile and a half and now a superspeedway in consecutive weeks. That is an accomplishment right there!

Dale Jarrett won the pole on Friday but couldn't even get a lap led as teammates Jeff Burton and Martin drafted to the front and never looked back. Martin would get around Burton and lead the last 65 laps in true dominance. Burton would get caught speeding during a round of green flag stops to drop a lap and finish in 39th.

Mike Skinner comes home with a strong top-5 run to earn Rookie of the Race honors again. There were 5 cautions for 21 laps which helped Martin hold the lead so long. All drivers were running at the day's end.

Next week the series heads to Rockingham, NC to run the ACDelco 400. It should be a great race and we look forward to seeing you there.

Mark Martin leads the pack in the closing laps of the Diehard 500

JEFF BURTON DOMINATES AT THE ROCK

                          Rockingham, NC | Race 30/32

Jeff Burton won the pole Friday and led all but 3 laps on Sunday to capture the ACDelco 400 at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham, NC. His closest competition would be Dale Jarrett but would be some 10 seconds behind Burton when he crossed the finish line Sunday. This is the 4th consecutive win for Roush Racing.

Mike Skinner was the Rookie of the Race with his 16th place finsih in Sunday's race. He has the Rookie of the Year title wrapped up and is looking to improve on things in 1998.

Terry Labonte had some suspension issues after contact with the outside wall and took a DNF. There were 4 cautions for 16 laps during the race. Next week we head out to the desert for the annual race in Phoenix, AZ. See you soon!
