MARK MARTIN CONTINUES TO SIZZLE IN THE DESERT

    Phoenix, AZ | Race 31/32

Mark Martin continues to show his dominance over the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. He qualified on the pole on Friday and then led all but 3 laps to win at Phoenix. He only relinquished the lead to teammate Jeff Burton and Ken Schrader during green flag pitstops.

Jerry Nadeau was the top finishing rookie in the #13 Elliott-Marino Ford in 25th place. This was his final run of his limited schedule for this year as he looks forward to his rookie campaign in 1998.

There was 1 caution for 4 laps and all drivers were running at the finish. Join us next week for the season finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway with the running of the NAPA 500. We will crown the series champion next week as well.

JEFF BURTON ENDS THE SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE WITH NAPA 500 VICTORY

      Atlanta, GA | Race 32/32

Jeff Burton took home the win in the season finale for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. He led all but 10 lap en route to his 3rd victory in the 2nd half of the season. He really has the momentum heading into next season. He should be one of the drivers to watch in 1998.

Robby Gordon was the top finishing rookie even though it was a terrible day for the #40 Coors Light Chevrolet. There was 1 caution for 4 laps today. This marks the end of the 1997 Winston Cup Season but stay tuned as we hand out awards next week in New York at the annual Awards Banquet.

MARK MARTIN CROWNED 1997 WINSTON CUP SERIES CHAMPION!

In an emotional celebration on the front stretch at Atlanta Motor Speedway Mark Martin climbed out of his #6 Valvoline Ford Thunderbird and was crowned champion of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. He was greeted by car owner "The Cat in the Hat" Jack Roush and both embraced in front of a standing ovation and chorus of cheers from the crowd.

Dick Berggren: Mark, you truly had a very dominating season especially down the stretch. Congratulations on winning the title!

Mark Martin: Is this real? Pinch me Dick so I know I'm not dreaming. Thank you so much for the kind words. I can't take the credit for this, those guys back at the shop put us in a good car week in and week out. I had the easy part and that was driving them.

Dick Berggren: Jack, how does it feel to finally get that title?

Jack Roush: You know Dick, we started this thing a little over 10 years ago and to see the hard work over the years pay off like this...it's just a feeling I will never forget and I'm sure Mark will never forget. We are building our team bigger and we hope next year is even better!

Dick Berggren: The party is just getting started down here guys, I'm sure it will last all night long.

            FULTON MOTORSPORTS YEAR IN REVIEW

            17 Starts | 0 Poles | 0 Wins | 1 Top-5 | 2 Top-10 | 7 DNF's

It was a tough year for us no doubt about it. We had high hopes but maybe jumped in over our heads a bit. We had some good runs but with no financial support the team was forced to shut down.

We did manage to get signed on to a decent team for next year. They won a race this season and finished in the top-35 in points so that guarantees us a provisional the first 5 races in 1998 which will be huge because that is what got us behind the 8-ball out of the gate this season.

I look forward to driving the Gumout Pontiac for Bahari Racing. We already had a testing session at Daytona and our speeds looked good compared to qualifying speeds run there this past February. Having the Gumout/Sara Lee sponsorship will allow us to test more this season and that will help with the performance as well.

Finally Mark gets that elusive title! That tear he went on over the final stretch of races was something else.

Can't wait for next season with Steve driving the #30!

Yeah, I was glad to see that as I think he deserved a title after the career he had. I always liked Mark.

I am eager to run the season as well. Right now I'm just going back through the write-up and touching it up some. I think I found a layout I finally am happy with so I will stick with it for the rest of the write up. Still looking for a good way to post lists on here that are lined up correctly but not too big of a deal but I would like them to be easier on the eyes.

I'm glad you like it and thanks for the kind comment.

Racin' and Rasslin' was my whole childhood/teen life. I am also enjoying diving back into this game and searching the internet for the pictures from back then.

                        1997 "TOP GUN" AWARD
                        (MOST WINS)

Dale Jarrett had a really strong 1997 Winston Cup Series campaign as he notched 7 victories to lead all drivers. He ended up 2nd in the final points but showed he is a driver you have to beat each and every weekend at the race track.

                          1997 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Mike Skinner takes home the 1997 rookie honors as he beat out the nearest rookie Robby Gordon by 1133 points. He really had a good rookie season finishing 20th in points and running up front on several occasions. The future looks bright for him and his Richard Childress Racing team.

                              1997 MOST IMPROVED DRIVER

Ward Burton takes home the "Most Improved Driver" Award for the 1997 season. Ward improved from 33rd in points in 1996 to finish 16th in points this season. His MBNA Pontiac was consistently in the top-20 this year but the team wants to improve on that next year and hopefully make the top-10 in points to sit on the stage in New York next year.

BAHARI RACING TEAM TO HOLD 2-DAY TEST IN ROCKINGHAM

                                Rockingham, NC

The Bahari Racing Team is hard at work in anticipation for the upcoming NASCAR Winston Cup Racing season. The team already had a fall test at Daytona with newly signed driver Steve Fulton. Now the team tries to get a feel for the second stop on the schedule at the North Carolina Speedway here in Rockingham. It was Day 1 and we were able to catch up with Steve for a few questions in between runs.

DICK BERGGREN: Steve, I see the team is hard at work getting ready for 1998. What are your teams goals here for this 2-day test?

STEVE FULTON: Well, Dick we have been hard at work trying to get ready for the season. We have an established team but there is always room for improvement. We are just focusing on qualifying today and tommorow we will be dialing in the race packages.

DICK BERGGREN: How are the speeds looking for you right now? We saw you take a spin but were able to keep it off the wall. How nerve-racking is it being a new guy and to take a spin like that?

STEVE FULTON: Well, our speeds are consistent and we hit on something that could put us toward the front going by speeds from the last race here. It's never fun to spin when you are the only car on the track but I was able to save it from damage. You never want to put more work on the team by wrecking so I was sick to my stomach over it. But we came back out and turned the fastest lap of the day.

DICK BERGGREN: Well, we wish you guys the best of luck on the upcoming season.
