USC would be given it this year. SMU's death penalty will prevent that though.

It's like what happened after we dropped the atom bomb in WWII The results were so catastrophic that now we'll do anything to avoid dropping another one." - John V. SMU is second only in historical overrating to Navy. The two seasons prior to the death penalty, SMU was 6-5 and 6-5.
Their only consistent success was in the early 80s, but it's quite apparent why that was now.Comment

Here's one I know people probably wont care about,but...
...If Marshall joins Conference USA as a football only school in 2000 instead of waiting to be included in 2005 as an all sports school, we probably would have been included in the Big East raid of Conference USA in 2005.
Timing really is everything, ain't it?Comment

A small private school like SMU would have a very hard time competing in the Big XII. It's far more likely that the Mustangs would have become Baylor 2.0.Comment

Re: How would the history of CFB have changed if..........?
Back in the mid-90's the University of Texas started talking to the Big 8 conference about the possibility of UT and Texas A&M (only) joining their conference.
At that time the three most influential politicians in Texas were Governor Ann Richards (Baylor alum), Lt Gov. Bob Bullock (Texas Tech alum & Baylor Law grad) and Speaker of the House Pete Laney (Texas Tech alum). Not surprisingly they used their considerable influence to assure that when the SWC died their schools would be allowed to join the newly formed Big XII.
How different might cfb be today if other schools had been the ones to have alums in positions of influence? For example, Laney had been made Speaker only a year before. His predecessor, the enormously popular Gib Lewis (TCU alum) had been the first man to be elected to the post 5 times, but had declined to run in 1993 as part of a plea bargain agreement connected with his misdemeanor conviction of a violation of Texas financial disclosure law.
If Lewis had still been Speaker when the SWC broke up, it's probable that the Frogs and not Tech would have been the ones allowed to tag along. If it hadn't been for the Lt. Gov Bullock-Gov. Richards tandem, it's doubtful that a small private school like Baylor would have even been considered.Last edited by coogrfan; 02-03-2010, 03:03 PM.Comment

If Drew Brees signs with Miami.....
Saban is still in Miami, what happens to Alabama? Does Florida win its 2nd National title? Is Julio Jones and Mark Ingram helping someone elses passing attack and winning the heisman sophomore year respectively?Originally posted by MoJust once I'd like to be the one they call a jerk off.Originally posted by MoYou underestimate my lazinessOriginally posted by Mo**** ya
