Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows

Big news out of the Big 12...

The Big 12 Conference Board of Directors announced adoption of a position to equally distribute all conference related distributable revenue to include Tier I and II football television, men's basketball television and NCAA men's basketball tournament revenues. This action becomes effective after each member institution commits a grant of rights to the Conference for its Tier I and II television rights for at least six years.

It is recognized by the Board that each member is directed by institutional policy relative to pursuing its grant of rights and that process will commence expeditiously at the institutional level.

The Board is encouraged by the number of institutions indicating interest in the Big 12, which reflects positively on the standing of the Conference within intercollegiate athletics. The Board also looks forward to considering the recommendation of the expansion committee regarding future membership options.
    Will Missouri now stay put?

No clue, but I never heard that they waived the waiting period for Pitt and Syracuse.

If Missouri goes and West Virginia goes as team #16, they're still one short. He can't count so I doubt he can be trusted.

WVU to SEC rumors are growing...

Someone who claims to have some inside sources expects this to be official by Wednesday or Thursday and says that a conditional invite has already been offered with certain conditions.

            We'll see...

That's kinda the definition of a conditional invite.

I don't buy it until someone in the SEC actually says it. Didn't we hear not too long ago how the SEC denied the WVU. I don't even remember if that was for real or just talk.

Official press release at 1:20 PM tomorrow regarding WVU leaving the Big East.

                Maybe.

So the rumors say, but watch this because it could be true. Who knows?

Some subscribers over at the WVU Scout Forums via private message.

We shall see, but I doubt it is announced in two hours.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is announced sometime this week, though.

EDIT: Looks like we can chalk up another rumor as false...

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows

Take it for what it's worth...

                      http://leatherhelmetblog.com/2011-ar...otting-ts.html

The news started to spread from Twitter. WVU was in the SEC. SEC officials were in Morgantown. WVU had notified the Big East. Joy quickly spread across the Mountain State. The euphoria of having our collective dream come true for membership in the SEC was at hand. It truly was a great day to be a Mountaineer.

And then we went to bed and our doubts returned with the morning sun. West Virginians are used to being the punch-line in jokes, we’re used to being mocked and having stereotypes unfairly applied to us, so it was easy to believe that our coveted membership in the SEC would be taken away from us at the last minute.

Missouri once again was the specter that haunted our party. Nary a word in the national media, no comment from WVU – we wondered why the news hadn’t broke. We wanted to see the scrolling ticker on ESPN proclaim our victory.

Yet no word – Why? Had Missouri changed their mind again?

Was the SEC having second thoughts with Missouri an option?

No, because lawyers and accountants bill by the hour.

Yesterday and again this morning SEC representatives were in Morgantown meeting with WVU officials and working out the details that would add WVU to the ranks of the SEC.

Despite Missouri. Despite the lack of national media, despite pundit after pundit leaving out the Mountaineers – we are just a few billable hours away from our dream.

And in Charleston a team of another WVU lawyers and accounts are currently negotiating with the Big East Conference to exit that league and begin SEC play in 2012. The price will be steep. The Big East wants 150% of revenues paid to WVU in 2010 and 2011 plus the $5 million exit fee. That’s somewhere in the neighborhood of $21-$25 million dollars. Greater than the exit fee the ACC hopes keeps its league intact.

WVU will try and negotiate that down to somewhere near the $12-15 range, but it will pay whatever it takes to get out.

The SEC has already done a wonderful thing for WVU. Potential membership has healed the wounds inflicted by the Rich Rodriguez/Bill Stewart/Dana Holgorsen coaching drama. Old money and new are lining up to pay that exit fee and WVU could pay thrice the Big East’s asking price if necessary

For those who still doubt WVU is a viable candidate connsider this – WVU has a perennial top-15 football program and a basketball program to match. WVU is one of only a handful of athletic programs in the country that is both self-funded and profitable - All on a budget of approximately $65 million per year.

SEC officials were considerably impressed with WVU’s financial plan and operations. One SEC official, considering the results WVU achieved with limited funds, referred to WVU as a potential sleeping giant in the SEC.

Maybe the health of WVU’s athletic department and the success the Mountaineers football and basketball programs gave WVU the edge over Missouri, but for whatever reason WVU seems SEC bound despite what the national media may think.

There will be no announcement today. West Virginia is electing a new governor to replace former governor and current U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, who also happens to be a close friend of Nick Saban, and WVU will allow the new governor to have the spotlight to himself. An announcement will be made as soon as WVU reaches an agreement with the Big East. WVU officials would prefer that announcement come sooner rather than later and either Thursday or Friday seem realistic if the lawyers and accountants get out of the way.

So like it our not WVU is SEC bound.

And it's a great day to be a Mountaineer!
