There are more rumblings of SMU to SEC on SMUs rival page. I still don't think it's gonna happen.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
It's very common that schools in the same conference go in on joint research projects, and do a lot to help each other out. An athletic conference forms a relationship that goes beyond sports. Otherwise, University Presidents wouldn't really get involved in all of this.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using TapatalkWell at least in the Big Ten there's a little bit more cooperation than you might think. The Big Ten's academic arm, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, tries to foster collaborations, workshops for profs, course development, etc. between Big Ten member schools (plus Chicago). In addition, the Big Ten has events such as the Big Ten graduate student expo to advertise to students at other universities. And lastly, there's a sense of pride and prestige that comes from being a part of an academically strong conference. I like the fact that most of the Big Ten is in the AAU and its members are seen as quality institutions by my peers.
I guess I should've tried to contact other schools in the WAC when I was doing my thesis last year. Maybe I could've gotten more participants.Comment

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
Thanks for the info. I did know that schools worked together on research projects, but I've only ever heard/experienced schools within the same state system or private and public schools in the same state do that, which is why I questioned conference academic affiliation.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
If all 3 service academies join up, I guess I don't mind it too much. Ignore geography at this point. Missouri Valley for the other sports though? Gonna go have some big tennis matches with Evansville and Illinois State? There's a conference in the west that I'm sure would be happy to take AFA's other sports.Comment

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
Looks like this will be the order of events:
1. SEC meets and votes in Mizzou as #14
2. Big East meets and asks members to double leaving price(which won't happen) while not inviting anyone...
3. Big 12 decides on 10-12 members invites Louisville and/or WVU & Cincy
4. ND takes it's Olympic sports and UConn to ACC despite BC's objection or Rutgers or just Rutgers and UConn.
5a. Air Force gets invite with Navy to join 1 or 2 team conference(USF & UConn/Rutgers)???
5b. MWC invites USF just to cause the demise of the Big East football conference. j/k
5c. C-USA raids Big East takes USF and/or UConn/Rutgers.
Also Big East has to have 8 full time members in all sports to keep FBS status. So just inviting football only programs won't cut it.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
The WAC only has 7 next year, and no official 8th team set to join at any point. They haven't been demoted. They'll bend some rules I imagine. They re-did the automatic bid rule in basketball because as the rules were, the WAC would not have gotten a team in the basketball tournament next season.Comment

I think you can hit 5 and keep it, but must get up to 8 to stay. WAC needs to get some FCS team to go up. North Dakota State, perhaps?Football: Denver Broncos

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
I wish, but I highly doubt it will ever happen. There's been an outcry for it, but administration is keen on supporting volleyball, basketball (especially with the new arena) and baseball while focusing more and more on research. I know Maverick Stadium now has field turf that wasn't installed too long ago, but it still has a track and the seating is not comfortable at all. Unless JerryWorld is open to UT-Arlington on Friday or Saturday nights, Maverick football isn't coming back.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks
