That's what I don't understand. They discussed the travel issue when TCU first announced they were moving. Their closest road game would have been like 1200 miles away, which was only 2-300 miles farther than their closest road game in the Mountain West. So it's not like travel for TCU would have changed that much.

Um, a lot of fun. Maybe not for the person paying the travel expenses...but for everyone else?...yeah, a lot of fun. In fact I don't believe I have ever heard "Oh rats, I have to go back to Hawaii. Again. Sigh."Comment

I never understood why Denver U was in the Sun Belt... I imagine the sun Belt has a far lower athletic budget than most conferences...Football: Denver Broncos

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
Also, TCU in the MWC had trips to Colorado State, Air Force, and New Mexico, all about 600-700 miles away. The closest in the BE is to USF, I believe, which is over 1,000 miles. And that's every single game. Granted, Boise is far, but the Big East has Syracuse and St. Johns, which are further. Plus, TCU needs to make those trips for small sports like Track and Volleyball week in and week out.
Hawaii would have been a trip, but LA Tech managed to pull off the trip 5 or 6 times a year, I think TCU can manage.
What I'm trying to say is TCU in the MWC had very few far trips (Boise, Fresno, and UH, 2 of which they will never play IC) whereas the Big East has large trips for them weekly, from Wisconsin to New York to Florida.Football: Denver Broncos

And as far as Mountain West; San Diego St? 1300 miles. Air Force? 700 miles. Las Vegas,? 1200 miles. Laramie? 900 miles. Provo/SLC? 1200 miles. The Mountain West has always been a sprawling conference. To be truthful, Fort Worth Texas is much, much closer to the East Coast of the United States than to the West Coast.Comment

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
Actually, Louisville and Cincinatti are both closer than USF. And it's 1100 miles to USF if you're driving. They'd be flying, so it's much less than that.

Although TCU is moving to the Big 12, which is undeniably better geography wise then either conference.Football: Denver Broncos

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
Is it costly? Yeah but its just a chartered plane ride, not THAT costly and if it lights up the eyes of just one highly desired recruit a year than its more then worth it.
How many chartered flights does Hawaii pay for a year for their sports teams? If that University can handle that then the argument about the cost of playing against Hawaii in conference is simply being misleading.Comment

I always figured that being able to tell a potential recruit that they will have a chance to play a football game in Hawaii at least once in their college career would be one hell of a recruiting tool.

Sounds like a great reason for the PAC to add them should they decide to expand further, since the PAC loves to play full schedules in conference.Comment

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
All these schools the Big East is looking at makes zero sense. I just turned on ESPN to see that Boise St is the target this week. There is a reason most conferences were made up of regional schools. You have to look at more then just football. These school will have to pay for womens teams to travel to play these schools. I know football makes the schools tons of money, trust me I'm a coach myself, but it is not that much when you have to fund non-money making programs like soccer, tennis, or golf have to travel cross country to play conference games/matches. This stuff has gotten out of hand. The Big East should be stripped of their AQ status no matter who they add at this point.Relax, it's just a video game!Comment

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
There's a decent chance that in the not too distant future, there will be football only conferences. Teams will have a conference for football, and a conference for everything else.Comment

Hope this happens, then we'll have a bowl victory over a team in the SEC again.
