The overwhelming force behind the move, DeFilippo insisted, was television money.
The ACC just signed a new deal with ESPN that will increase the revenue for each school to approximately $13 million. With the addition of Pittsburgh and Syracuse, said DeFilippo, another significant increase will come.
“We always keep our television partners close to us,’’ he said. “You don’t get extra money for basketball. It’s 85 percent football money. TV - ESPN - is the one who told us what to do. This was football; it had nothing to do with basketball.’’
--------------
Even more ironic this time was that Pittsburgh was a prime player in the Big East battle plans and Nordenberg had been one of the loudest voices against the Big East accepting the lucrative offer from ESPN, which would have nearly doubled the payoff to each school from $6 million to slightly more than $11 million per school.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
The Big East has reached out to Central Florida as the first school in its target area for expansion.
According to Big East sources familiar with the talks, Big East commissioner John Marinatto and other represenatives contacted Conference USA (of which Central Florida is a member) informing Commissioner Brit Banowsky of the Big East's interest in Central Florida.
UCF officials were then contacted as well.
Although no offer was formally made, the process is expected to proceed quickly in the next few days with an offer expected--it will be an offer that UCF is also expected to accept.
Once that happens, the Big East is likely to focus on Temple to gauge the interest in rejoining the Big East after an absence of 7 years.
All of these moves are part of an overall plan which the Big East hopes will raise its football membership to 12 schools. with Navy, Air Force, SMU, Houston and Boise State all being given attention. Villanova, which has expressed a desire to move from the FCS to the FB S level, is also on the Big East's target list.
There is no timetable for the completion of all of these moves, but it seems clear that UCF will be the first step taken by the Big East.Comment

If true, I don't like the idea of ESPN telling conferences how to set themselves up.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
Now, that being said, still not a big fan of Boise to the Big East. Imo, Boise adds a good football team, and that's all. They don't bring in a great fanbase, media market, prestige, money, academics, or any other good sport. It's a good football team, and that's it. It was a great move for the MWC because, at the time, it got them one step closer to AQ status (before they lost Utah, BYU, and TCU). But for anyone else, I just don't see why.Comment

This times 1,000. UCF has the potential to become a very, very good football and basketball school. Huge/amazing campus, brand new athletic facilities, and situated right in the middle of a recruiting hotbed.Comment
