You would care about your career to when it came to something like this. This was a grad student, still studying his way through college trying to make the right decision. Are you going to blame a student for going through an internal source when the alternative could mean that the work that you did at the university would be washed away? I'm glad you think that you could do that, but not everybody can when the situation is like this.

So wait, let me get this straight. People on this board are actually condoning thinking about your "career" ahead of children being raped? Un-freakin-believable. No way, no how is that okay. If you hold your career in that high esteem, your priorities are WAY out of whack.

I've read most of this thread... I've also read most of the D.A. compliant (very graphic as to Sandusky's acts).... however, the shower act witnessed by staff.. stated in the compliant he heard rhythmic slapping sounds then saw the sex... and rushed out...

to me.. every1 is saying rape... my definition of rape is screaming please stop.. please stop... but, at 1st glance the staffer mayhave felt it was consensual.. that could be why he didn't call the cop... it's still a lame excuse with the kid being only 10....

I don't think the GA was thinking of his career when he went to Paterno first. The mind works in really crazy ways when you see something traumatic. I really understand his first instinct. It's the Fight or Flight response. The GA's natural response was Flight. For others, it would've been Fight. Much of this is based on your own experiences. The GA believed in his first instinct that Paterno was the person to go to, to stop this. I get that.

What is bothering me is that the GA, the janitor, the parents of some of the kids that were disturbed when they found out their kid showered with the coach, didn't go to the police. I understand they all did something, and I guess they thought that was enough, and maybe my education and training with these sorts of things is getting in my way. But I just can't get past the fact that no one outside of the PSU higher-ups didn't think to go to the police with this stuff.

Now, if this guy (the GA) was thinking of his career and decided not to go to the police 2 or 3 days later, then he deserves as much punishment as the AD and VP in this. There is no way a school would be legally able to terminate someone for reporting a crime so that thinking is completely insane.

So what happens when the kid is lambasted by friends of Penn State's football community, ostracized on campus for potentially being the final nail in the coffin for one of the biggest coaches in college football history, and possibly being so shunned by the community that he has to go elsewhere for school? It's not that easy to go through for the whistle-blower even when there are laws to protect them. So because of random chance, the kid in question goes from a normal grad student at Penn State to being one of the most sought after interviews while possibly having to move to another university out of his own pocket because of the incident.

If you want justice, go after the guy that did the crime. The student did the best that he mentally could do at that time. It's not his fault that the kid was raped (and at that age, it cannot legally be consentual).

You really think people are going to lambaste him for turning in a child rapist?

I really, really doubt that. Especially once the details came out.

Regardless of consent, if one of the people involved is under 18 it's considered rape.

It's disgusting. Not reporting a horrific crime to the proper authorities is considered "the right thing" and anyone that says they would is bluffing or a "paper tiger". Unreal.

It's not just the physiological harm from hecklers, it's also the physiological harm from the media, the peanut gallery, from everybody. Even if he did do the heroic thing, it would be enough to derail his student career.

Please stop calling a 28 year old man a kid. Mike McQueary was 28 when he saw this. He was a record setting Penn St QB before the incident. He was on staff trying to get hired.

Don't get it twisted, the kid was the one getting sexual abused.

You gotta be kidding. This whole thing is crazy. But why am I not surprised? Adios Paterno, another legacy tainted by dumb reckless and deplorable acts.

And you'll be even wiser to go through life not second-guessing heat-of-the-moment decisions.

What's really sad is the amount of cowards who are justifying the actions of other cowards. And yes you are a coward if you see with your own eyes a child being raped and you don't do anything.
Dude, keep the personal attacks out of this.

I wasn't trying to single you out and apologize if you did feel singled out, but calling other people cowards for simply pointing out that this situation is far, far more complicated than dialing 911 is totally uncalled for.

EDIT: Also think it's hilariously ironic that you would use the "You don't know me" argument in one breath and then sentences later label posters who disagreed with you (people I assume you don't know), "cowards". Typical internet bravado?

So the GA reported the rape to Paterno, did he never wonder why nothing happened after that?
