    Deon Newsome follows father's path

Three-star athlete Deon Newsome (Hampton, Va.) committed to play for Virginia Tech Thursday, the Virginian-Pilot reports. His father, Myron Newsome, played linebacker for the Hokies from 1995-'96 earning second team All-Big East accolades.

Deon, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound prospect, selected Virginia Tech over a scholarship offer from Virginia. Duke showed interest.

He received all-region recognition as a returner and utility defensive player last fall while also making the all-state team as a punter.

Newsome is the 11th pledge for Virginia Tech. 10 are from inside state lines.

Peach State LB, Juco WR to Ole Miss

High three-star outside linebacker Mario Mathis (Thomasville, Ga.) has committed to play for the SEC Rebels, according to multiple sources. Additionally, Scout.com reports that Hinds Community College (Raymond, Miss.) wide receiver Quadarias Mireless is on board with Ole Miss.

Mathis, the nation's No. 34-rated OLB at this time, is a 6-foot-2, 230-pound prospect who also received scholarship offers from South Florida, Mississippi State and South Alabama. Clemson and South Carolina were among the other programs showing interest.

Mireless, a 5-foot-11, 185-pounder, originally signed with Ole Miss out of Atlantic Community High School (Delray Beach, Fla.) as a three-star in 2010 but headed to Hinds due to academic issues. During this recruiting cycle, he picked up offers from Oklahoma State and Purdue.

The Rebels now have eight pledges.

2013 RB from Texas commits to LSU

LSU received a commitment Thursday from a Texas running back.

The pledge gives the Tigers 10 commitments for 2013 and adds an explosive offensive threat as well as their first true running back in the class.

Adam Taylor, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound running back from Texas powerhouse Katy High, committed to the Tigers after a junior season that was marred by a season-ending knee injury in the season's first game.

"They stuck with me through the injury," said Taylor of LSU. "Hopefully, this kind of thing never happens again. But if it does, I know they'll stick by me and they'll have a great support system."

He took a blow to the knee in a game that matched two of Houston's top prep powers. Katy, a western suburb, played Houston North Shore on Aug. 26, 2011 when Taylor limped out of the game early in the fourth quarter after a hit on his left knee resulted in a torn ACL.

He had piled up 106 yards on 20 carries against one of the area's toughest defenses when he limped off, but he was not able to add any more yardage in his junior season.

By then, he was already heavily recruited. Playing for one of his state's most dominant and visible programs, he rushed for 1,553 yards and 18 touchdowns as a sophomore.

"My sophomore year, it was all so new to me," he said. "Those first 4-5 games, I was really just getting the feel for it."

He learned quickly and some pretty big names in the college football world noticed.

He had offers from Baylor, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Wisconsin, among others. Many also stuck with him through his injury, but he was impressed by LSU and assistant coach Thomas McGaughey, who was the Tigers' point man in his recruiting process.

"They have a great tradition and they run the ball," said Taylor. "They just have great things to offer, starting with a great education."

He appears to be a Les Miles kind of back. At 210 pounds, he has the potential to put on more weight and offer the kind of between-the-tackles punch that current Tigers like Spencer Ware and Kenny Hilliard bring.

"But I want to be a complete back," he said. "After my sophomore year, I really worked on adding that extra burst that would give me the complete, balanced package."

He's still working on it, but on a more limited basis, for now. He's participating in Katy's spring practice, but not in contact drills.

He said he expects to be participating full speed come August camp "doing the things everybody else does."

That will be almost a full year after he suffered his injury.

"When it first happened, I was upset and shocked," he said. "But I stayed close to God and kept working on my rehab."

          Latevius Rayford Commits To Vandy

Latevius Rayford is one of the top prospects in the state of Tennessee but people are just now starting to realize that. The three-star wide receiver out of Memphis (Tenn.) Central has picked up five offers, three over the last week. One of those offers was the school he was waiting on. On Friday morning he made his college commitment.

“Things have been going pretty good this morning because I got up with my parents about my decision and we got on board and we decided to commit to Vanderbilt,” Rayford said. “Coach (James) Franklin said that he’s proud and to make sure my commitment is strong and that if anyone else comes through to let them know that I committed to Vanderbilt.”

Rayford has great hands, great body control and fluid athleticism at the wide receiver position. His big play ability and hands have him rated as the No. 13 prospects in the state of Tennessee for 247Sports.

“I told Vanderbilt I chose them because they chose me and they had the academics and the football program to go with it.”

Rayford has visited Vanderbilt twice, most recently for the Vanderbilt Kentucky basketball game.

“It’s pretty cool and they have a great vibe up there. Everyone is friendly especially during the basketball game because they had escorted us through there and everyone was pretty hype,” he said. “I talked with the coaches one-on-one and they were on point.”

With the early decision made, Rayford feels great.

“It feels pretty good,” he said. “It feels like I accomplished a stepping stone. I’m just ready for this time next year for my name to be in the papers saying that I committed to Vanderbilt because that’s a real accomplishment.”
Latevius Rayford is one of the hotter names in the state of Tennessee but he ended his recruitment on Friday and committed to Vanderbilt.

            Eldridge Massington commits to USC

Eldridge Massington (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite) wanted to wait. The thought of a being a Trojan, however, was too strong.

The four-star wide receiver picked up an offer from USC on Wednesday, and late Friday morning the 6-foot-3, 205-pound athlete gave his verbal commitment to the Trojans. Massington is USC’s fifth commitment of the 2013 recruiting class and the first receiver on board.

Recruited by USC coaches Tee Martin and Marvin Sanders, Massington chose the Trojans over offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Oklahoma State and Clemson. He had 25 offers – the last being the Trojans.

“USC is ‘Wide Receiver University’ to me,” Massington said. “They’ve got a pro-style offense with good quarterbacks. I feel like I can fit in there.”

Massington’s size and speed – he’s a qualifier for next week’s Texas Class 4A state track and field meet in the 100-meter dash – made him a major prospect for many schools. Massington, however, had extremely high respect for Martin, Sanders and head coach Lane Kiffin. The respect was so high that Massington didn’t make a visit to the USC campus first.

“Coach Martin said he can make just like Robert Woods and Marquise Lee,” Massington said, referring to the Trojans’ stud receivers. “I’ll be following guys like that and Dwayne Jarrett and Mike Williams.

“Coach Kiffin said I fit the role of the big receiver they like. I can be like Mike Williams but a little faster.”

Massington’s run the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds and the 100-meter dash in 10.52 seconds. On the field, Massington was impressive in only six productive games, recording 41 receptions for 667 yards and six touchdowns during the 2011 season. He missed the last three games with turf toe and didn’t receive a catch in the first game of the year, as West Mesquite was working in a freshman quarterback.

Additionally, Massington bench presses 280 pounds and power cleans nearly 300, which makes him a strong target of the line of scrimmage – often times stronger than the cornerbacks lined up against him.

Massington is ranked No. 20 among all wide receivers nationally. He’s also ranked No. 20 among all players in Texas.

Massington, a longtime fan of the west coast schools and a follower of the Pac-12, is excited about the decision. Along with playing for a contender, he also will be a lot closer to family members in the Golden State. Massington has relatives in Bakersfield, Calif.

“They’re all going to be really happy,” Massington said. “They know I wanted to go to USC.

“As for everybody else, they’re going to see a big, fast wide receiver who’s going to go get the ball. I’m ready.”

The #1 rated DT in the country, Montravious Adams of Tyrone, GA is expected to be one of the attendees for Auburn's annual "Big Cat" Weekend in May.

Adams is very high on Auburn. IF we could land this kid...along with DEs Dee Liner and Carl Lawson who are already committed...that would be an insane Defensive line class for 2013.

Pretty much sucks to see him go he defiantly looked like a great prospect, but I think Ohio St. can bounce back after this little incident of a creepy fan. Hopefully Bosa doesn't de-commit because he was in the picture with Alex and Haumerman aswell only time will tell how badly this effects Ohio State...

OT Dalton Rodriguez commits to Oklahoma

Offensive tackle Dalton Rodriguez (Tulsa, Okla./Union) was all set to be the fifth commitment for Oklahoma’s 2013 recruiting class. But a Friday afternoon conversation with four-star athlete Stanvon Taylor (Tulsa, Okla./East Central) changed things. Taylor’s talk with Rodriguez swayed the cornerback, who committed to OU on Friday night.

Rodriguez will have to settle for being the sixth commitment as he announced his pledge to the Sooners on Saturday afternoon to a Tulsa radio station.

No in-state prospect’s stock has soared more than Rodriguez -- who wasn’t on OU’s radar initially -- since the beginning of the calendar year. Tulsa and Texas Tech stepped up to offer him first, and then he started to receive more attention from across the country. With family on the West Coast, Rodriguez was looking at schools such as Arizona State and UCLA, but a visit to OU for its March junior day changed everything.

                              Christian Lacouture chooses Nebraska

High three-star defensive tackle Christian Lacouture (College Station, Texas/A&M Consolidated) had Nebraska, LSU and Michigan on his final list of schools. During his weekend visit to Lincoln, Neb., Lacouture decided that playing for the shot at being a Blackshirt was the way to go.

Lacouture committed to Nebraska and became the Cornhuskers’ sixth commitment of the 2013 recruiting class. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound tackle visited the Nebraska campus for the second time in as many months.

“I’d been looking at it for a while, and when I came up here [Saturday], I had a good intention I was going to commit,” Lacouture said. “With everythoing going on -- the tradition and how everything is shaping up -- it was a good time for me to commit to Nebraska.

Recruited by both defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski and defensive coordinator John Papuchis, Lacouture recorded 51 tackles and six sacks during the 2011 season. He was a first-team all-district selection and has been a consistent contributor for A&M Consolidated since moving from west Texas power Odessa Permian his sophomore season.

Lacouture is ranked No. 30 among defensive tackles nationally. He is ranked No. 54 among players in Texas. Last month, Lacouture earned an invitation to participate in The Opening, a four-day training and development series at the Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.

Lacouture had nine offers, including LSU and Michigan. Oklahoma State, Missouri and Texas A&M -- which is located literally blocks away from his home -- also offered. He committed to the Aggies in January 2011 but decommitted to explore other options in March. Additionally, Texas and Oklahoma had entered the picture by showing recent interest.

“I love the coaches [at Nebraska]. We all have great relationships,” Lacouture said. “I felt it was right, and I didn’t want to waste any more time, so I pulled the trigger.”

Lacouture also said he’s been getting along with his fellow 2013 recruits. He’s been in contact with linebacker Josh Banderas (Lincoln, Neb./Southwest) -- the son of former Cornhusker tight end Tom Banderas -- and both players are committed to serving as player recruiters for other potential commits.

“We’re looking to get this recruiting class going,” Lacouture said. Me and Josh have been talking about it for a little bit, and [Saturday], we really hit it off. We’re looking to win a national championship while we’re here. This is a special time for us. Nebraska’s on the rise.”

It did not take long for Austin Schmidt (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) to jump on his offer from Illinois. He picked up the scholarship Saturday afternoon, made a quick call to his parents and committed shortly thereafter.

"Well I went to their junior day earlier this year and when I went I pretty much liked everything about it, loved the campus and obviously the football program is great," the 6-foot-5, 258-pound offensive tackle said.

With Schmidt's commitment, the Fighting Illini staff has picked up four commitments in a little over a week and have eight total.

Schmidt is also the third commitment from Ohio. First-year Illini coach Tim Beckman was previously the coach at Toledo.

Central Michigan also offered Schmidt, and he had interest from Bowling Green, Indiana, NC State and Pittsburgh.
