    What Should the MWC-CUSA Conference be called?

    Sorry if this should be in the realignment thread.

    The MWC CUSA is not being called a merge and is called a new association. What would you naem it and how would you set up the divisions. It's been hinted that there will be a 4 division set up.

    Names:
    All American Conference (AAC)
    Coast to Coast Conference (CCC)

    Division Set Up

    Pacific Division/Far West Division
    UNLV
    Hawai'i
    Nevada
    Fresno State

    Mountain Division/Rocky Mountain Division
    New Mexico
    Wyoming
    Air Force
    Colorado State

    Atlantic Division/Gulf Coast Division
    Marshall
    UAB
    Tulane
    ECU

    Midwest Division/Appalachian Division
    Rice
    UTEP
    Tulsa
    Southern Miss

    You play: 3 other division Teams, The Division Geographically closest to you (Old MWC teams play each other and old CUSA Teams) and 1 other team from each division OR 3 Division teams, 1 Rival from each division, 1 other team from each division OR 3 Division Opponents, 1 Protected Rival, 4/5 other teams (Rotated).

    Thoughts/Other Ideas?

    I like it, but the conference should be called either "Mountain USA" or "Little Weast".

        Re: What Should the MWC-CUSA Conference be called?

        First of all, I can't believe they are actually doing this. I thought that they would associate and have a championship between them, but this is nuts. I guess it speeds up the superconference idea anyways. The best name would be to retain Conference USA, as that's how large the thing is going to be.

        The division setup in the OP is just about right for this conference. Scheduling could be done like it was going to be done in the SEC. Have the four divisions make temporary conferences and rotate them. For example, the Pacific Division would be paired with the Mountain Division one year, followed by the Midwest, then Atlantic. The Division that you are paired with is also the division that you play in season. You also play every team in your own division every year, and then play the team that has the same record as you from the previous season. That would mean nine conference games. Whomever has the top record from the division pairings wins that pairing (which is fair because everybody played everyone in that pairing), and they go onto a championship. Lets take New Mexico for example:

        Year One (paired with Pacific):
        @Marshall (hypothetical same record with Atlantic Division team)
        Rice (hypothetical same record with Midwest Division team)
        Nevada-Las Vegas
        @Hawai'i
        Nevada
        @Fresno State
        @Air Force
        Wyoming
        @Colorado State

        Year Two (paired with Midwest)
        East Carolina (hypothetical same record with Atlantic Division team)
        @Hawai'i (hypothetical same record with Pacific Division team)
        Rice
        @Texas-El Paso
        Tulsa
        @Southern Mississippi
        Air Force
        @Wyoming
        Colorado State

        Year Three (paired with Atlantic)
        Nevada (hypothetical same record with Pacific Division team)
        @Tulsa (hypothetical same record with Midwest Division team)
        Marshall
        @Alabama-Birmingham
        Tulane
        @East Carolina
        @Air Force
        Wyoming
        @Colorado State

        Much like the NFL does. Of course, these are example schedules, but it would work and could be easily done if they don't go crazy and add another four teams.

          That could work well, I guess there aren't a ton of huge rivalries in this conference, so protected games are a bit unnecessary.

              I would think the pods would only happen if there were 20 teams or more. If its 18 or less I would think it would just be split up into two divisions who's teams only play each other, with the winner of each playing in a championship game.

                Whoa whoa whoa, that is way too logical. We are talking college football here.

                  If you have two divisions with sixteen teams, you play a team from the other conference every eight years; at home once every sixteen years. There's a reason why the AFC and NFC are not in two divisions.

                    I don't see the point in this. As far as the name, I think conference USA works fine. Divide it into an east and west.

                      In all seriousness, just keep it as C-USA, IMO.

                        Re: What Should the MWC-CUSA Conference be called?

                        First off I do not see the Mountain West institutions agreeing to the New conference being called Conference USA. Let's call it a pride thing. They will want it to look like an even merging. So whether or not that name makes sense, no way it ends up that.

                        Secondly, once you decide to merge into one conference and you have 16 teams or more, staying as two divisions is horrible for scheduling. The merging means you plan on having more cross country game pairings. It will be better for their national ratings that way.

                        That means it is likely that one way or another this new conference works on a four division schedule. If they get a waiver or rule change from the NCAA then they do a straight up four division schedule. Since the travel distances are so long I would think they do not do the division vs division scheduling but instead you play three games against your division and two against every other division, if you have 16.

                        Reason for this is that it will cut down the number of seriously long trips these teams have to make, especially the east coast vs west coast match ups. That is a brutal trip to make and the time difference gives the home team a very serious advantage. You do not want a year where your program is having to make more than the minimum required.

                        So non-divisional games get evenly split against the other divisions instead of a rotational focus, in my opinion. This isn't NCAA football 2012, those journeys make a difference.

                            Also, for non-Football, do you think 3 divisions of 5 would make sense? (Hawaii is WCC for non-Football sports). Or add Denver/Seatlle as a non-football member to keep it at 16.
