If being the bigger man counts for nothing I would love to hear what you think talking trash counts for.

Getting under the opponent's skin. Psychological warfare in a way that's unique to sports. If you can get your opponent mad and/or shaken enough he may start to make mistakes. All it takes is one mistake by one player in a game like football to give up a touchdown or a crucial first down.

Some players aren't affected by trash talk and sometimes talking trash can have the opposite effect on a player.

But mainly talking trash is for the player's own benefit. In most cases it helps that player keep his confidence up/lets him get or maintain that mental edge.

Mariota 4 carries 87 yards, 2 TD's.

Have to give props to Nicholls though. They're actually doing some good things. They have nice size and nastiness on the o-line, and their RB is legit.

Then he's a douche. There are tons of douches in sports though. When you win, it doesn't get talked about. When you lose or screw up, everyone brings it up...until you start winning again and then it's an endearing quality once more.
