    CFB is not down.

People say its down every year....

I think people are used to seeing other teams be powerhouses in the top 5 like Texas, Oklahoma, USC etc. so when those teams struggle they think it's a down year.

I think Oregon will be vunerable against Washington, Stanford, and UCLA

Alabama's only real challenge is LSU .... maybe Arkansas

Auburn can Prolly give Bama a challenge

Can you really say Oregon is better than Stanford?

LSU might be better than Bama at the moment

Arizona State could probably beat Oregon but unfortunately they don't play the Ducks this year

Georgia isn't that for behind Bama

            Miami is becoming good again

Louisville even tho they don't really play anybody this year can hold their own with any team in the Nation given the opportunity

Oklahoma is coming back after a down year

The Clemson vs Florida State game should be interesting, same thing with Miami vs FSU. Also two games to not over look that both FSU and Clemson play is against Maryland.

OSU's 2012 season was one of the flukier undefeated seasons in recent memory. They won a lot of close games...and did so against an average schedule (and a bad one for a BCS conference team). Most of the advanced ratings systems I'm aware of had them in the late teens/early 20s.

It's kind of like if an NFL team went 16-0, but won all 16 games by 3 points. In a retrospective sense, 16-0 is a hell of an accomplishment. But in a predictive one, they're nothing more than an above-average team.
I definitely see what your saying, but I feel as though winning 17 in a row is has proven that this is a team that has proven to have a style of play and an approach that is sustainable.

I'm not saying that they are world beaters or deserve the #1 ranking. All I'm saying is that winning 17 in a row is not easy, nor is going undefeated (there's a reason it's only happened 5 other times in the history of Ohio State football), so a little more respect is deserved IMO.

                  Re: Week 5 Discussion

                  My actual game thoughts:

                  - Wisconsin played Braxton the same way they did last year. They schemed to take away his running ability and force him to beat them through the air, and this time Braxton showed off his much improved passing ability. A little rusty at times, but he showed why he is such a highly regarded player. With all due respect to Kenny G. because he did phenomenal filling in, when Brax is healthy there's no question: this is his team.

                  - Our WR's... wow. Philly Brown dropped 2 TD passes, and Devin Smith dropped another straight off his hands. All 3 of those forced us into 4th down situations just outside of FG range, which really hurt our overall output. When Brax is throwing beautiful balls like that, you've gotta come down with them.

                  - Brad Roby cost himself millions of $$$ last night. Abberdaris (sp) toasted him in all aspects of the game.

                  - Carlos Hyde needs to tote the rock more. Kid is an animal, runs so violently between the tackles and really picks up the tough yardage.

                  - Not taking much away from late 3rd-end of game playcalling. They buttoned it up and played Tresselball to run the clock and got the W.

                  - I'm still not sold on Luke Fickell as a DC. That said, I did love his gameplan coming in. Shut down the nation's best running attack (and hold one averaging 349 yards per game to 103) and force their unsteady QB to beat you with the pass. Bad thing for him is that Roby and C.J. Barnett had bad games and it showed.

                  - Such a killer losing Christian Bryant for the season. He's the leader of this defense and so valuable as a safety. Not going to be easy to replace, particularly against Northwestern next week.

Yeah Maryland is very dangerous this year I wouldn't take them lightly at all

I think Miami beating Florida 2 weeks ago really boosted their confidence and I they are playing like a team that can't be beat

Florida State will be tested for the next 4 weeks against Maryland, Clemson, NC State, and Miami

We're most likely a year or two away from making any serious noise in the conference, but you can't help but be excited by the potential.

                        Ahem!....

In all seriousness...it isn't a "down year" in College Football. That's a term generally used by fans of teams who are underachieving, etc.

As you pointed out, there are plenty of quality teams this year. IMO, Stanford and Oregon have looked the most "complete" as in Offense/Defense/Special Teams all year.

I think that is gonna be the game of the year.

Bammer looks salty on Defense as usual and Clemson looks scary on offense.

Baylor is racking up yards like a video game and could potentially run the table if they can get past OU in Waco.

Florida State has the next great QB in Jameis Winston. The Florida State Clemson game looks to be an outstanding matchup this year.

The SEC is interesting in that no team, not even bammer, has looked unbeatable. Through 4 games, bammer still has issues with their offensive line, LSU's defense has given up 60+ points and almost 700 yards of offense in the last 6 quarters, Georgia has been good but not great on D but has an outstanding offense, and Texas A&M...as unstoppable as they are on offense...are comically awful on defense. Every offense that A&M has played looks like an offensive juggernaut. Hard to say who comes out of the league this year but I'd bet on one of LSU/UGA/bammer.

Then you have Fresno State and Louisville who both look to be moving towards undefeated seasons.

You have outstanding players everywhere and great games ahead. But then again..it's all perspective.

I still think college football peaked around 2005-2009 and hasn't quite gotten back to that level. Maybe it's subjective. The top teams might be just as good, but I don't think we have the same depth. The ACC has definitely improved, but the Big Ten has taken a nosedive and the Pac-12 has lost super USC. The Big 12 is also worse from that era. The SEC and ACC are probably the only portions of college football that have improved, if you even count the SEC. The SEC probably had more depth, then, as well, since Tennessee, Auburn, and Arkansas weren't dumpster fires.
