Hoosiers making a game of it in Bloomington? Long pass + 2PT cuts Spartan lead to 28-18 with 8 min to play.

That was the worst two play sequence I've ever seen from the opponent's 1 yard line

Because the pylon is also the endzone line. Once the ball touches the pylon, it's also across the endzone line, so it's a TD.
OK, I'm trying to clarify because I'm misunderstanding something, are you saying if he was in bounds and hit the pylon with the football it would be a touchdown, but if he stays in bounds and hits the pylon with his foot he's considered out of bounds? I was so confused when the official review came back and said "he stepped out of bounds with his left foot", I'm like what? when? I always thought pylon was in bounds not matter what

Well, the fightin' Herm Edwards are off to great start. What a wacky way to start the Washington/ASU game.

Yeah, I don't find the rules consistent. If you touch it with your foot, the pylon is out of bounds. If you touch it with the football, the pylon is in bounds and part of the end zone.

              Anyway, Oregon's done.

Yeah it's a weird rule. The pylon is out of bounds, so once it's touched the play is dead. If he touches the pylon with the football, it's a TD because the football broke the plane of the endzone.

But in this instance, because he touched it with his foot, he is considered out of bounds and the placement of the ball is determined by where the ball is. He had the ball in his left arm and it was on the backswing of his arm motion, so the ball was around the 1 yard line when his foot hit the pylon.

No, it's still out of bounds. But it's also the start of the goalline. As soon as the ball breaks the plane of the endzone line, it's a TD. The ball touching the pylon breaks the plane of the endzone and is a TD, even though it's simultaneously out of bounds.

They talked about how the endzone line extends beyond out of bounds as well. That's why Bryce Love's run was a TD. He technically wasn't out of bounds until he had crossed into the endzone, so the TD counted because the ball crossed the endzone line extended before he was out of bounds.

The pylon is an extension of the sideline, which is out of bounds. But it's also an extension of the goal line, which is a touchdown. In a strange way, it makes sense to me.

I think it is a dumb rule. It should be there to assist with extensions of the ball, but in the situations like tonight it shouldn't determine he was OOB. He was upright and it should have been based off of when he actually came down on the boundary.

Wisconsin and Iowa playing exactly the type of game that everyone knew they would. Close, tight, low scoring.

it makes sense now, I just wish the review explanation had said it, instead of just coming back with "after review, the runner's left foot stepped out of bounds"

All this pylon talk reminds me of why I'd always control my player to jump way over the pylon when I played Madden back in the day.

there's probably some sort of "order of operations" or a rules hierarchy somewhere that states "goal line trumps out of bounds" somewhere in the rule book that clears up the football touching the pylon rule, because in general "it's out of bounds and a TD at the same time" is pretty weird
