In Tebow's case, it probably helped that the runner up was Arkansas' Mcfadden whose team was no where near the BCS picture. RG3's runner up was Andrew Luck from 10-1 Stanford team though so it's not completely unheard of.

All of that said. If the trophy were to be given to the most outstanding performer of the season then the answer is Daniels.

Daniels ranks #3 in passing yards, #1 in passing touchdowns, #1 in QB rating, #1 in rushing yards by a QB, #6 in rushing TDs by a QB.
There are only 25 players in FBS with 1000+ rushing yards this season. Daniels is one of them, and the next closest QB on that list plays for Army with 200 fewer yards in their triple option attack.

Penix and Nix both have impressive stat lines, Daniels has just been better. Penix is the nation's leader in passing yards (beating Daniels by about 100 yards), but he does not do anything with his legs. His overall QB rating also trails Daniels's due to having more interceptions and a lower completion percentage. Nix only trails Daniels by about 50 yards passing, only has 2 picks on the season, trails Daniels' FBS leading 36 TD passes by just 1, and he has an extremely impressive completion percentage near 80%. So, from a passing standpoint he's right there with Daniels, but he only is about 10% of the statistical runner than Daniels has been.
I agree. I just think having the chance to go 13-0 and beating Oregon in the PAC-12 should solidify Penix's chance. But Nix is in a similar boat. Both have a key rival game and and facing one another in the Championship game. Nix has a tougher rivalry game in Oregon State, compared to Penix rivalry game being Wash State. Daniels is a situation where the recency bias of Nix/Penix having better final rivalry games and PAC-12 title games it almost feels like Nix and Penix would have to both struggle in the next 2 games for Dnaiels to overcome recency bias

Lamar Jackson won it in 2016 with 3 losses. The runner up to him was Dashaun Watson who's team beat Louisville in the regular season and went on to win the National Championship.

Edit: I love thinking about different scenarios.

          Big 10 champion
The Michigan/Ohio State winner should beat Iowa and get one spot. Hard to see a path for the loser making it.

          SEC champion
If Alabama beats Georgia then at most there would be three undefeated teams. A one-loss, SEC champion Alabama is getting in. A Big 12 champion Texas would have a case, but the committee isn't leaving a one-loss SEC champion Alabama out. Georgia is obviously in with a win, but could very well be left out with a loss.

          Pac 12 champion
An undefeated Washington is obviously in. A one-loss Oregon that avenges its only loss is getting in. The irony is sweet that Washington State and Oregon State can potentially screw the Pac 12 next weekend.

          ACC champion
Florida State is in if it stays undefeated. It will be favored to beat Florida and Louisville, but things just got dicier with Travis out. And the Florida game is at The Swamp. Louisville has been a great story, but I think it needs chaos to get in, even if it beats Kentucky and then FSU to win the ACC.

That leaves Texas on the outside looking in, unless it gets some help. Texas isn't going to jump an undefeated team and it's not going to jump a one-loss Oregon. And, despite the head-to-head win, it likely gets jumped by a one-loss, SEC champion Alabama. So Texas really needs FSU to lose and, just to be safe, wants Georgia to win the SEC.
I thought about this scenario once Alabama beat Kentucky and clinched their spot in the SECCG the other week.

If this were to happen (12-1 Alabama gets in over 12-1 Texas), then it would mean two things for me:

          1. I don't want to hear another soul complain about conference realignment. Aside from the significant financial gain for these programs, it's also about maximizing exposure (granted, it means a little less going to a 12-team playoff next year) and odds to get into the playoff.

          2. I don't want to hear anyone complain if there continues to be a lack of great non-conference matchups in September. If you're Texas (or OU if they did play Georgia, etc.), then what was the benefit of playing a top tier SEC school OOC? And going forward, why would Kansas State want to play LSU, knowing a loss may eliminate them from contention and a win would more than likely be invalidated at the end of the season.

I love how some talking heads were saying, "what about Texas?" if Michigan were to get in the playoff over them, with the specter of the the sign stealing controversy over their heads, even though the scandal has no known material impact on Texas.

Yet, unsurprisingly those same people are/will be quiet if Texas is left out of the playoff in favor of a team they beat by 10 in their own building in September.

If it does happen, it'll just be another example of how what you do on the field (which is rooted in fact) doesn't - and will never - supersede precedent and opinion, when you aren't a select conference/few programs.

Chances are it won't play out that way, and Weeks 13 and/or 14 will have a "hold my beer" moment.

Nix is having a better season than Penix. Probably an overstatement though after his game this week.

Haven't seen the wow factor from Penix this year like I thought we would.

Paul Hornung won the Heisman in 1956, and Notre Dame went 2-8.

Miss me with the losses lol.

I guess he must of been really good. Or they didn't want to give it to the true winner (probably someone like Jim Brown). Sorry I just stuff like that and it screams something right to me.

Edit: looked it up. Or Johnny Majors. 10-0. Just in case you are getting ideas [emoji23]
