Re: What does it take for a guy to get a HC offer anymore?!?

So I performed a little experiment.

I forced won the ‘ship the last 2 seasons in a row. So my coach prestige is A+, 2 time National Champion.

I then went in and took control of 5 other characters/coaches of teams I was interested in coaching as, and that were either out of the Top 25 or were very low ranked: Notre Dame, Oklahoma, FSU, Michigan, and OSU.

I then made all of those teams coaches leave, so they were all guaranteed to be open the next season.

Of those 5 teams, all with HC openings at the same time and all with prestige between 4-5 stars…..only MICHIGAN offered me the HC JOB. Same resume, same timing, all open at the same time, and only UM offered me.

For what it’s worth I am a Master Recruiter coach archetype. NONE of the teams were interested in my Archetype. Michigan wanted a “CEO” archetype. That’s not me, but I have won two nattys so maybe that helps?

It would be interesting to know exactly how much that coach archetype factors into the decision process for teams.
Either way it needs to be reworked next year. If a team is looking for a new coach, I don’t care what their “archetype preference” is, the young coach with multiple national championships already at Cal is going to be front and center for everybody.

    I hope EA fixes this
    San Francisco 49ers
    San Francisco Giants
    Utah Jazz
    Kentucky Wildcats
    Ohio State Buckeyes

Been here... Had three straight 11-win seasons at Rice as OC. Made the CFP twice. After the third year the only HC offer I received was UTSA.

Re: What does it take for a guy to get a HC offer anymore?!?

        Decisions, DECISIONS!!!

I started as HC of ODU and spent 4 years there. I was offered HC @ Louisville, Purdue, and Boston College. I accepted Louisville.

I just finished the regular season of my 2nd year at The Ville with an ACC championship and 3 seed in the playoffs (ranked #11).

I’m being offered coordinator jobs @ LSU, Oklahoma, and Washington.
        No thank you.

I’m also being offered the HC gig @ Penn State! I fully intended to stay @ Louisville for a while and I have a decent recruiting class coming in with 10 4⭐️ kids that I’d love to see (including my QB of the future).

But as a B1G guy, I’m not sure how I could turn down this job, even if it means jumping ship after only 2 years @ Louisville.

If I were to rate uniforms it’d be 1. Michigan, 2. Alabama, 3. Penn State, 4. Ohio State. If I ranked stadium atmospheres it’d be 1. LSU, 2. Penn State, 3. Georgia, 4. Ohio State.

I’m pretty sure that even with as attached as I’m becoming with Louisville, there’s really no way I could turn down Jerry Sandusky University.

But, on the flip side, PSU’s last coach was fired for going 7-5 and I could ABSOLUTELY see me winning 7 or fewer games in the B1G my 1st couple of years and it’d suck big time to get fired.

But as far as why they wanted me is concerned, I run the same defense they desire, but I don’t match any of their other desires.

DOH! Michigan’s job is open as well, but I wasn’t offered it[emoji22]

Kirby Smart is the top candidate and given Michigan’s 5 ⭐️ prestige and Georgia’s 4.5 ⭐️ prestige, I’m almost positive Kirby will take the Michigan job (with as dumb as that is that Kirby would ever leave Georgia).

            WHOA!

Here’s something relevant and helpful for those of you trying to land HC gigs. After seeing that the Michigan job was open I checked their desires.
            1. CEO
            2. Pro Style
            3. Alma Mater: Yes
            4. 3-4 Multiple

So I reverted to my week 16 save (the week between CCGs and 1st bowl week) and changed my offensive scheme to Pro Style (Michigan’s specifically) and changed my defensive scheme to 3-4 multiple. I already had Michigan as my Alma Mater. So I now matched 3/4 of their desires.

I advanced and while I am no longer being offered the PSU job (maybe cuz I’m not 425 any more) I WAS offered the Michigan job. Kirby is still option #1, and I’m not in the top 3, but I’m being offered it, so it’s mine for the taking.

So, I’d suggest seeing what jobs are offered and changing your scheme to match what they want, unless of course that’s too cheesy for you and you’d prefer winning a national championship and only being offered the HC job at Poughkeepsie University.

Michigan fired their HC after going 8-4, so it’ll be tough keeping the job, but there’s no way I don’t take this job. Sorry Fighting Sanduskies.

This is really interesting...especially since that, when Wisconsin offered me their HC job after 8 years at CSU, I only matched their desired offense. They said alma mater wasn't important, even though my coach is a Wisconsin grad.

Either way, it sure does seem that these desires do play a role, and is something I'll for sure keep an eye on in dyansties going forward!

Are you extending your contract? I have played a few seasons and am doing well and my contract keeps getting extended...and I sign it. Maybe that stops the calls from coming?

In the year that your contract is auto extended it’s impossible to get offers (even though the deep dive prior to release said the exact opposite would occur).

I won the Natty in year 3 at Tulane. Mississippi State was open and they didnt even blink at me! Starting a new one with Texas Tech. Hoping I can grab Texas or Texas A&M down the road.

In '14 I used to schedule them every year to sabotage their programs so I could take the reigns.

The fictional coaches also make it hard to keep up with whats going on in coaching carousel

One of my biggest gripes is how schools seem to completely avoid hiring from within for HC jobs. In my TeamBuilder UNC Pembroke dynasty where I was the OC, I had a handful of HCs leave and never got an offer to be the HC despite being a Broyles Award winning OC and having a highly ranked offense each year, conference championships, 1 Natty and 2 other Semi-Finals appearances.

I remember them saying the scheme would matter and since mine is option it takes me a while to get a job offer. That's one reason I wanted to make teambuilder teams run the option scheme, but its not possible

Question for you (or anyone) - above you mentioned not being in the top 3 for HC off but yours for the taking. Does anyone know what the point of the top 3 coaching choice is? Especially if you can get offered sometimes when you aren’t even in the top 3? Is it at all possible to accept the job and them choose another coach on their list that might be higher?

I know when you offer coordinators jobs you aren’t guaranteed to get them, so I wasn’t sure how the coaching carousel worked when it came to those offers coming in
