FYI - If anyone is still interested, I am finally in the process of updating this, making a few tweaks, and consolidating some additional house rules/add-on's that can be used in conjunction with this.

I apologize for abandoning this for a long time. I under-estimated how much time went into raising a newborn baby!

Feel free to reply with additional house-rules/add-on's that have worked for you if you have been using this system, as well as any flaws you have found.

Looking forward to it glad you’re back! Hope your newborn is doing well. A friend and I have started applying the random awareness boost/reduction to all freshmen in our conference in an effort to not have every team start all upperclassman. Small sample size but we’ve seen some true freshmen enter the two deep and a couple of redshirts the following year

Nice! Make sure you only apply it to a certain % of true freshman otherwise it will end up being irrelevant after a few seasons.

I apply it to 1/3 of freshman QB’s. I like the idea of applying it to other positions as well if you have the time. Any change in the feel of the game or stats with more players on the field with high awareness ratings?

There’s no way around this without the editor as far as I know.

One thing I have noticed is that true “depth-chart-changing” progression only occurs an average of 2-3 times per year depending on how much parity your team has, so it isn’t as big of an issue (to me at least) as it seems. And even if a player progresses a lot and is still stuck as #2 on the depth chart, I do notice the game somewhat adjusts to it stat-wise and then obviously the next year they can take over their rightful spot.

If I see a major issue on a team that I care about, I’ll just make up a storyline like “fans are upset Williams is starting at QB over Johnson even though he doesn’t seem to be as good” etc.

How do you decide which third of the freshmen get it?
I haven’t really kept track but I will moving forward

Well first of all I only do this for freshman QB’s for every team.

But I go through each freshman QB in order of OVR and then use a random number generator to assign each player a number 1-3. If they get a 1 or 2, I do nothing. If they get a 3, I give them an awareness boost.

I’ve also experimented with giving the “1’s an awareness reduction. I don’t have enough data to say what, if any impact it is having.

The main reason I do this for QB’s is that you end up with many more QB’s putting up big time stats like we see in today’s CFB world. Gone are the days of 4/5 Heisman candidates being RB’s each and every year. On average, I end up with about 3 QB’s, 1 RB, and 1 WR as Heisman finalists. This seems to be about what happens in real life. I assume the WR’s are showing up at a higher rate as a result of the QB’s being better stats-wise and giving them more opportunities.

Oh okay the system I’ve been using. I think like you in an early version of this 1 was a reduction and three was a boost only 2 stayed the same. What I’ve been doing is a +10/-10 with the awareness

I’ve been using this system with my CFB Revamped dynasty and I am having a ton of fun once again.

One year, my speedy RB hit high progression, and also rolled the mega progression that was added to your 2.0 tool. I feel like my top WRs regress every season for some reason, while I usually have better luck with my QBs and DBs.

The worst feeling is when a guy rolls a five, but then only hits on a 1-9 stamina progression!!!

Yep! But that’s the beauty of it. My last season all of my “5’s” seemed to get small progressions and all of my “1’s” and “2’s” seemed to get huge regressions. I was coming off of a conference championship and thought I’d be contending for a National Title, but now I’m sitting at 4-2. That’s the way it goes sometimes I guess!

I had all 3 QB’s on my roster roll a 1 or 2, and then each hit between -30 and -49. It was brutal but I played by the rules because it adds some immersion and challenge. I went from 275 passing yards per game last season to under 200 this season, so there is a noticeable difference.

On the contrary, I had an already solid 2nd string RB get a big time progression and become the starter, so it truly forced me to play the game in a different way. He basically came from nowhere and is now leading the conference in rushing.

I felt great about my QB room and wasn’t going to recruit one this year, but because my 3 QB’s regressed so badly, I’m being forced to take one.

These wrinkles have made this game so much more enjoyable.

Absolutely. I actually just finished losing back-to-back national championship games yesterday with NC State, so I took a job with my alma Mater, Colorado. They were coming off of a 4-8 season, two star prestige. I knew before taking the job that it would be a good rebuild. Once I took over, I looked at the roster and saw that I had some...decent pieces to work with.

However, this was the worst offseason for regression that I’ve had after 15 seasons. I had two senior starter offensive linemen transfer, and numerous 30-level and 40-level regressions across the board. I think I only had two or three guys with good progression. It is going to be a long, difficult process!

I played my first game against CSU, and squeaked by 14-7. Next, we take on the #4 Cornhuskers. Not looking forward to that one.

If you think about it though that’s pretty realistic. Lot of times when a new coach comes in players leave and some guys don’t fit the new schemes or gel (hence the regression)

That was my goal with this. The games default system is far from realistic and while my system isn’t perfect, it’s much more realistic and adds so parity.

One thing that I like to do is create storylines around regression/progression. I use a Google Slides presentation in conjunction with the Webpage Maker and fill my Google Slides with faux articles, tweets, and message board posts that showcase this.

For example, if a player regresses, I may make a storyline that they were injured in the offseason or were seen partying too much around campus. If a player progresses too much I’ll make a storyline that there were rumors they were staying late in the offseason to life or work on footwork etc. If a QB and RB both progress a lot in the same season, I’ll have a storyline where they often stayed late and worked on routes and timing.

Sometimes I don’t explain it through newsworthy tweets and articles and instead will have a message board post or tweet from a random saying “wtf is going on with Ty Jones?? Looks like he got slower?”

It takes some time but also adds so much immersion and really makes me get to know my roster from top to bottom.
