SEC Championship Year 7
The game was a chess match from the start. Both coaches were a little too conservative and didn't really do what they wanted to but it was out of mutual respect for the opposing coach. The game was slow to start as SC held a 3-0 lead to end the 1st quarter and scored early in the 2nd on a 40 yard counter by Jason Griffin that gave them a 10-0 lead. Auburn stalled again and SC was rolling with good field position but a redzone interception ended what could have been a 3 score lead. Auburn answered with a long drive and was able to get in the endzone with 1:09 on the clock before halftime. After a 3 and out and good clock management Auburn forced a punt with 16 seconds left in the half and was able to tie it at 10 right before halftime.
SC opened the half with the ball but Auburn's defense stepped up and forced a punt. The Tigers would respond with another solid drive that ended with backup RB Eddie Washington getting into the end zone to give Auburn their first lead of the game at 17-10. SC cut it to 4 with a field goal but after a huge 4th and gamble inside the redzone that Auburn stuffed, the Tigers were able to control some of the clock and finally got into the endzone again in the 4th to make the lead 24-13. Another Gamecocks interception gave the Tigers a long drive that ate the clock and ended with 3 more points. SC's final interception ended the game.
Auburn wins a 3rd straight SEC Title against a very good SC team 27-13. The Tigers are now 1 game away from a 3rd straight national championship which hasnt been done in the BCS era. The Tigers will take on a 13-0 Southern Miss team that has played well all year but will need a flawless game to knock off Auburn.
