That's a long-standing myth. You should check out the case documents still available online of Pecover V. Electronics Arts, the case that blew the lid off the whole situation, complete with actual internal memos of EA Execs specifically discussing approaching the NFL for an exclusive to stop 2K from disrupting the then current price structure with a $19.99 game (NFL 2K5), proving indisputably once and for all that it was EA not the NFL that got the whole thing started all in response to 2K's moves, and also proving it was EA not the NFL that flipped its lid about the price drop (a clarification of another myth we hear people repeat a lot).

The fact that this bombshell was pretty much ignored by the media, the sports gaming media specifically, is another reason why I generally detest mainstream media. The only good thing is, a lot of people figured it didn't go down the way EA claimed it did anyway. I never believed EA. The whole thing seemed fishy from the beginning and now we know why; because it was. That's why when people say things about going easy on them it really irks me, but I understand they say that not realizing the full extent of the damage this company has caused to this sector. This one move completely destroyed football video gaming and the innovation roll it was on, arguably irreparably destroying it at this point. So to me, every bit of flack EA gets is well-deserved. If you decide to make that kind of business move, then you'd better be prepared to deal with what comes when you fail to produce a great product.

I'll tell you what though, I'd bet a lot of money that there are a lot of people on the Madden staff that are dying for that exclusive to go away now so the pressure can go away with it. Those guys have been through the wringer, and deservedly so based on what they've produced for the past decade, but like I said in another post it's time for them and us to be granted some mercy now. This has gone on more than long enough. With Madden's sales in the toilet right now, they could sell just as many copies without an exclusive, and in many years in the PS2 era they sold more. So the only big winner is the NFL and everybody else (especially the gamer) is the loser.

I blame the NFL. For this, for the exclusive deal with DirecTV, and for now defending the arcane blackout rules that are out there.

Going exclusive (which wasn't the first time they did it in the video game world) has been the NFL's MO for decades and will not change any time soon.

The monopoly argument is simply not valid. It's not a monopoly. If you are mad EA is the sole licensee for NFL football get mad at the NFL.

I'd kill for more options, don't get me wrong, the whole monopoly nonsense is ridiculous. I guess DirecTV and Nike are monopolies not as well.

Except the NFL is still aired on more channels than Direct TV and companies can still make NFL apparel outside of Nike.

...how does this response rebut his point? EA could've approached the NFL a million times - the NFL never had to say yes. That's what killed NFL video game competition.

Honestly I can sympathize with Angry Joe, and I've always considered him to be me if I reviewed videogames. But his problem is that his reviews are RIDICULOUSLY long. I'm not going to sit there for 40 minutes, dude. 10 minutes? OK, especially since he likes to inject humor into his reviews. But 40 is just wayyyy too long. Not for me.

Which game had ultimate team first? Madden 12 was the first year for the madden series.

FIFA 09 was the first game that EA ever put UT in. It took off in FIFA 10 however. It was an expansion for 09, DLC. It was a full on game mode in 10.

Not sure why that even matters. But there it is.

Also in regards to the exclusivity of the licensing, didn't that expire this past year (2013). EA didn't renew as far as I know. Then again I also stopped caring or following it. And at this point 2k will never jump back in the NFL game even if they could. They just closed up shop on baseball because SCE (The Show) was dominating in sales. Also the product being put out was not very good. And a few years back they dropped Hockey because EA was beating them in sales pretty badly also.

I honestly don't think 2k sports will make anything other than NBA and WWE games at this point. Also what ever happened to their Tennis game (Top Spin)? In fact, no one is making a Tennis game anymore either. And I shouldn't say 2K sports, as that division seems to no longer exist.

Where the **** are all our sports gaming? We no longer have any college sports, at all. And now we only have one company make each sport. Well, except for the NBA. But lets be serious, EA should just give up on that. We also only have one MMA game now. And I think EA gave up on boxing. We do have two soccer games. But I am not so sure Konami will bother moving to next gen outside of Europe and Japan. I don't think PES sales are all the great in NA.

I miss the days of having choices for all sports. And having all sports. Sports games are what feed my gaming addiction. I play other games, but sports video games are why I am a gamer. They are why I own the systems. With out them, I might stop being a gamer. I will most likely not buy another system past this gen (PS4/X1). Especially if the sports games dry up to just Madden and NBA 2K. I love those franchise. But come on.

All im saying is Angry Joe is right lol, graphically this games looks real close to last gen and the gameplay has improved but not a whole lot.. They really dont put any effort into madden lol. honestly i dont think EA sports are even good at graphics FIFA graphics look just like last gen also.

No he obviously doesn't. Some people get off on defending this game against valid criticisms. They deflect any real issues. He would rather "Angry Joe who?" than took about the actual issues which are all valid.

Maybe I'm missing it but I haven't seen anyone defend the game in this thread at all nor have I seen anyone say Angry Joe's points aren't valid, for all the people screaming about reading comprehension it's getting a little ironic.
