What does the "11" & "12" personel mean? I cant be 1 WR, 1 TE, 1HB, etc...

11 personnel is 1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR.
12 personnel is 1 RB, 2 TE, 2 WR.

It a naming convention for personnel groupings. The formula is always HB+TE+WR and it always equals 5 because that the most eligible receivers allowed. You use the numerals of the HB and TE as the personnel groupings name and HB(this includes FB when applicable) are always listed first. So a formation with 2 backs and 2 TE would be 22 personnel. 1 back and 0 TE is 10 personnel, etc....

Some popular personnel examples:

0 HB 0 TE 5 WR= 00 personnel
0 HB 1 TE 4 WR= 01 personnel
1 HB 0 TE 4 WR= 10 personnel
1 HB 1 TE 3 WR= 11 personnel
1 HB 2 TE 2 WR= 12 personnel
1 HB 3 TE 1 WR= 13 personnel
2 HB 0 TE 3 WR= 20 personnel
2 HB 1 TE 2 WR= 21 personnel
2 HB 2 TE 1 WR= 22 personnel
2 HB 3 TE 0 WR= 23 personnel

Aren't Gun Monster and Gun Monster Stack illegal formations? You have to have 5 linemen on the line. They added that rule after the Patriots used a 6th receiver as a decoy.

Pretty sure I can recall seeing the gun monster used last year. I think it was the browns. Maybe Cincinnati.. not 100% sure who it was.

Not illegal. They just made it so you had to declare with more time before the snap. Kind of limited the surprise factor.

I think in this situation the team will have some special name for it. I believe back in the day when the niners would go super heavy it was called the "Angus" package. I heard other stuff like "loaded" and such attached to it as well.

Also it still has 7 on the LOS and all OL are covered up so it's legal.

Nice to see some new formations, I wonder which playbooks are gonna be nice in Madden 18. Had a lot of fun with Baltimore, Carolina, New England, and New Orleans in M17.

logically on defense i want be able to pick;
1/ the personnel: base nickel dime whatever
1a/ sub package if any
2/ dline / lber stunt if any
3/ play

so for example; i want to play 3 man under from 3-3-5. but i want the nickel to be the 3rd best zcv player (assuming the 2 other best zcv are my safeties are playing deep as well as the nickel)

logically and simplistically my safeties are zcv first, prc/awr/pur/tkl next with mcv. i want noone to get behind them. my cb1 and cb2 are usually my best mcv but in cover 3 they always drop into zone with one of the safeties. i want to be able to drop one mlber into the middle deep, safeties play deep sides etc etc.

i could do that in the play creator of HC09 or by play design/formation sub in hc06. with any defence you should be able to pick default coverage plays. anything weird or with personnel changes should be able to be made. normal 3-4 formations dont have a double a gap blitz for mlbers for example

Here's the thing. There's kind of no such thing as defensive "formations" Defenses are more about alignments and it's based greatly off of what the offense is presenting. So although I'm sure there will be new defensive "formations" it wont provide the appropriate level of complexity that many of us are looking for. Rex pointed out himself that they way they designed defensive AI is kind of hamstrung right now due to limitations that make the offense overpowred.

That’s not true, at least in my experience playing high school football. The formations are just adaptable to the offense.

If, for example, the call is an under front, they aren’t always just going to switch to an over front if the strong side is on the other side. Instead, often times the 3-tech will just line up in the other side, the Leo will go the weak side, etc. It is the same under front, just “flipped.”

Also, say a bear front is called. That isn’t going to change just because of the strong side is left instead of right, and it probably won’t even be called if the offense comes out in 11 personnel.


Furthermore when I played football we definitely had formations (or fronts; bear, under, etc were all a part of the play call, and each play had specific assignments and contingencies for my position as safety, and the others as well, that depended on both offensive formation and what happens after the snap).

This is closer to what I was trying to say. The main point was that in terms of "formations" for defense the game is kind of maxed out. You pick the front and then the coverage. That's it. The only thing missing is stunts and gap concepts other than filling a gap.
